MESSAGE FROM SEASIDE REGARDING COVID-19
It is likely not an exaggeration to
say that we are living in extraordinary times, with no end
in sight, as of the publication of
this issue.
Like the rest of America and the
world, Seaside Jewish Community
has had to alter its practices and
basic operations in the wake of the
World Health Organization’s
declaration of COVID-19, the
novel coronavirus, as a global
pandemic. Ever since then, with
many of us now sheltering in place
and engaging in a new practice
called physical distancing, many
Seaside events — including
Religious School classes, Board
meetings, Adult Education classes,
and sadly, our annual Passover
Seder — have either been
cancelled or conducted virtually.
And still many more
cancellations/alterations are likely
yet to come.
Our Newsletter is your monthly
source of news and information
for all things Seaside. It is our
mission to provide our
congregants with the most current,
relevant, and important
information available. But we are
publishing this particular issue of
the Newsletter (and perhaps future
issues) with the understanding that
much of the information you are
seeing in it regarding dates, times,
and locations of events is subject
to change and thus may be
outdated after publication.
However, we want to assure you
that we are doing the best we can,

Dealing With the Coronavirus Crisis
So many of us are facing the
challenges of new routines. Some are facing the profound challenges
of living alone and being isolated,
while others are challenged with
living with children who are now
home all day.
To make the best of our
situation, the Internet offers us
endless possibilities.
• Have a Facetime playdate for
the kids.
• Invite your family members or
friends to join you for dinner and
share it via Facetime. You could
even plan the same menu, so that
it feels like you are sitting at the
same table. Have a conversation
topic.
Thanks to Phyllis Bloom, Anita
Smulyan, Fran Sneider, and
Wendy Walker, we have
established a phone tree. Seaside
volunteers will be calling each
member to check in, give a virtual
hug, and ask if you need anything.
If you see a phone number from
out of state, it may be a volunteer.
An open Board meeting was
held (on Sunday, Mar. 22) via
Zoom. Reb Lisa has provided us
with two beautiful and meaningful
virtual services thus far, and we
look forward to her continued
leadership in services. Her
Saturday service is still available
on YouTube for viewing.
Committees are still meeting,
albeit virtually. The Worship
Committee is working with Reb
Lisa on the virtual Seder for the

President’s Message – Marsha Davis
We are all coping with this
pandemic differently. Some of us
have developed our own special
way. For me, I cope by singing
and chanting, “Wherever you go,
whatever you do, I will be right
there waiting for you,” (sung
together), or Hakuna Matata,
(which means no worries for the
rest of your days), or Hashivenu
Adoni elecha…(which speaks
about how we will turn renewed).
All of these remind me of
belonging to a community, of not being alone. Under stressful times,
we need to know that someone
else is available to listen, to talk
to, and to care. Thanks to the work
of the Chesed Committee, Anita
Smulyan, and Fran Sneider, we
have created a phone tree. Each
Seaside member will be receiving
a phone call, checking in, and
sharing concern for one another.
The calls may come from an out
of town number from members
who have moved here and kept
their old phone numbers and area
code.
We are continuing to function
virtually as a Board and as
committees. What can you do with
your sequestered time? Call
someone in the Seaside directory
you do not know and introduce
yourself. Check on a neighbor for
any needs they might have now.
Lower your level of listening to
the news. Join Carole Ash as she
virtually leads Chant and
Meditation every Wednesday
morning at 9 a.m. (see page 5).
You are an integral part of what
it takes to make our village a place
to find comfort.
B’Shalom.
Message from Reb Lisa We are entering the season of
Passover, and many of us are busy
cleaning, shopping, and preparing
our holiday tables. I have many
strong and fond memories of my
childhood Passover rituals, and
they formed the foundation of how
I create a festive table for my
family.
One of the strongest memories I
have is of my grandmother
polishing the silver, something we
did twice a year: once before Rosh
Hashanah and once before
Passover. Grandma Anna taught me how to make matzo balls and
matzo muffins, savory brisket, and
potato kugel. I watched her grind
chopped liver and fashion gefilte
fish from scratch. Most of all, I
remember her handmade cross-
stitch tablecloths, which formed
the bottom layer of our holiday
table. I still use that tablecloth
today.
A poem I wrote (see page 7)
gives a peek into the world she
came from and the gifts she passed
on to me and my children.
Wishing you all a sweet and
blessed Passover season!

Multi-Faith Committee Planned events have been
postponed during this latest pre-
Pesach plague, yet our work
continues. We are figuring out
how best to reschedule affected
events.
We are planning future events
into 2021. We are also supporting
those at Seaside who are building
personal relationships for
themselves and their teens with
members of three United
Methodist Churches: Epworth,
Faith, and Israel; the Islamic
Society of Central Delaware; and
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Eliminating Handshakes As concern rises over the spread
of infectious disease, the germ-
spreading handshake is becoming
obsolete. The fist bump, Vulcan
salute, jazz hands, and pageant
wave are all being touted as
healthier ways to greet one
another.
And yet anyone who has taken a
yoga class has likely practiced a
sanitary and heartfelt greeting that
is a common practice in India and
parts of Asia. Called Namaste, it’s
done by bringing the palms
together in front of your chest with a slight bow of your head or body.
Unlike the Western handshake,
this salutation is a noncontact
form of greeting that can be
appropriate between people of
different genders, ages, and social
standing.
To practice, bring your palms
together — slightly cupped, with
fingers pointed up — in front of
your heart, chakra, at the center of
your chest. Then bow gently
toward the other person. As an
especially deep form of honoring
an esteemed person, such as a
teacher or spiritual leader, make
the Anjali Mudra gesture first in
front of the “third eye” space on
your forehead between your
eyebrows, then move it down to
your heart.
Yahrzeit Plaques Honor your departed loved one by
having a plaque mounted on the wall
in the sanctuary. It takes three months
to receive them.

Jewish Film Festival Recap The Rehoboth Beach Jewish
Film Festival took place at the
Cinema Arts Theater in Lewes on
Mar. 11–15. The film selection
committee presented a variety of
quality Jewish films. An
unwelcome, additional feature to
the weekend was the threat of the
coronavirus pandemic.
Unfortunately, many people
opted to miss this event, but those
who attended were rewarded by a
smaller audience and more
opportunity for physical
distancing.
We are grateful to Sue Early,
executive director of the Rehoboth
Beach Film Society, and the
faithful volunteers who ran the
show that must go on. Many
thanks as well to Marshall Shord
for his guidance in film selection,
our advertisers, our film hosts, and
the Jewish Film Festival film
selection committee, and of
course, our loyal audiences. Look
for us next year to return with
another exciting selection of films.
Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an
SJC event but thought you couldn't
afford it? SJC policy is to work with
you if you have a financial hardship.
Please contact the treasurer to
confidentially discuss your situation

M’kor HaChaim Our lives are in turmoil and our
hearts heavy as we cope with the
challenges of COVID-19 and its
implications for our families, our
communities, and our world. We
pray for courage to stay strong for
those who need us. We pray for
insight to act in ways which keep
us and our communities safe. We
pray for those who are at greatest
risk as well as those fighting on
the front lines to find a vaccine
and care for the ill. Throughout
history, our people have faced
plagues, forced expulsion, famine, slavery, and extermination. We
have survived all of these terrible
acts and events which were out of
our control. Our fortitude, our
faith and our traditions have given
us the tools to weather and
overcome these challenges.
Today we give thanks for the
blessings we do have: homes,
family, friends, community,
technology, and the ability to
communicate through iPhones and
computers! May we stay mindful
of our gifts, even as we stay
vigilant in helping those in need.
Our mandate to repair the world is
needed more than ever as we
navigate the challenges ahead. Let
us continue to pray and sing and
celebrate in whatever way we can
during these troubling times,
knowing that the light of healing
and hope is just beyond the
horizon. We may not be able to
join hands physically, but we will
march together toward freedom
and health. Together, in creative
ways, we will continue to forge
the bonds of love and hope which
keep us strong and connected.
May it be so. Amen.

Religious Leader Interviews By the time of publication, the
Search Committee will have
completed the interviews for
SJC’s Interim Religious Leader
and presented our
recommendation to the Board of
Directors for their approval. Look
for a special announcement by the
end of this month naming the
candidate.
The selected Interim Leader will
assist us as we move forward in a
successful search for our Settled
Religious Leader. Opportunities to
voice your thoughts regarding the Settled Religious Leader are as
follows:
1. Survey referenced in
February's letter will go “live” this
month.
2. Group conversations over the
next few months (e.g., focus
groups, parlor meetings), which
may need to be conducted
virtually.
3. Candidates will present
themselves for Shabbat services
and other meet & greets open to
the congregation.
4. Congregation meeting after
the meet & greets to come
together to discuss the candidates.
Our intention is to have a Settled
Religious Leader in place for
Summer 2021. Please note that
this may change as steps 1 through
4 unfold.
The Search Committee thanks
you for the opportunity to do this
important work. SJC’s needs are
the reason we are here for you.

Passover Table A poem by Reb Lisa Levine
Sorting through the silver,
I picture my grandmother’s
hands
as mine.
I see her preparing for the
holiday
with tempered measure,
spoon by spoon,
fork by fork,
each in its rightful place
ready to be engaged
in the promise of food
plentiful and rich.
Not like her shtetl home
always scratching for a bite,
this new country paved with gold
gave off its bounty
to her and our family,
so that she could leisurely
sort
through the silver,
cleaning, placing, watching,
protecting all
she had built,
and preserving it all
for me
so that I could be
sorting the silver
today.

Seaside Publicity Policy We would like to remind our
members that all official Seaside
Communications — both within
and outside the congregation —
must be pre-approved by the SJC
President or one of the Vice
Presidents prior to distribution, per
Seaside’s by-laws.
This policy applies to articles
and items for the Seaside
Newsletter and weekly and
emergency e-blasts but also to any
photos and articles, columns, or
letters mentioning Seaside for
publication by outside organizations; this includes but is
not limited to publications such as
J-Voice, the Cape Gazette, and
Letters from Camp Rehoboth.
Here are some suggestions for
submitting pieces for publication:
• The most effective method is
to send your desired
communication in a form that you
think is ready for public
consumption to
m. This will go to the
Communications Committee/SJC
Newsletter team. A team member
will be happy to assist you with
any editing or proofreading.
• We will edit your
communication as needed and
send you the proposed revised
version and obtain Presidential or
Vice-Presidential approval on
your behalf.
• We can also help with
distribution as needed. Please be
advised that any communication
you send will be edited as the
publisher sees fit. Questions?
Please contact David Udoff or
Jennifer Rubenstein (contact info
on page 3).

Purim Seaside’s Religious School children and adults alike gathered together at the Lewes Public Library to
celebrate Purim on Mar. 8. Al Hoffman read the Megillah, with Buddy Feldman leading the service.
Parents and children dressed up in costume, Hamantaschen was served, and everyone made noise with
their groggers at the mention of Haman’s name.
