Immediate Past President Mike Saltzman

Co-President’s Message - Buddy Feldman Seaside begins the new year of 2019 with great expectations for a larger space to accommodate our growing membership for worship services as well as educational and social opportunities. We are submitting plans to several general contractors to obtain their bids for the work needed to expand the Seaside building. We will let you know when a builder has been selected and the schedule to begin construction has been determined. Many of our regularly scheduled programs and activities may be disrupted during the construction process. The Board of Directors is working hard to find alternate locations for Seaside’s busy schedule of events, if needed. The end result will be well worth any short-term inconveniences. Now that Eric Doroshow is leaving the Board, Alyssa and I want to thank him for his many years of service to Seaside, especially these last few years as Treasurer. We want to welcome Howie Hochman as our new Treasurer. The Board wishes to thank the many dedicated SJC committee chairs and members for their time and commitment to SJC in 2018. We hope to have even more participation this year. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2019!

Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an SJC event but thought you couldn't afford it? SJC policy is to work with you if you have a financial hardship. Please contact the treasurer to confidentially discuss your situation.

Message from Reb Lisa The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Darkness cannot put out darkness. Only light can do that.” Winter is a dark time of year, and with it comes our responsibility to recall and remember the words of the Rev. Dr. King and his passion to change the racist and antisemitic culture of our country. Today, we struggle with many of the same issues that Dr. King worked for and strive for the values and changes he advocated. We celebrate those values with our MLK Commemoration Shabbat coming up on Saturday, Jan. 17. It is also Shabbat Shira, Song of the Sea, recounting our own Exodus from Egypt! I’m looking forward to the Board Installation and my formal welcome to Seaside Jewish Community on Friday, Jan. 4, at 7:30 p.m. My mentor and friend Rabbi Marc Disick will be here to bless us all. Please join us for these important events. May we all be filled with the light of justice and action as we work side by side with our Interfaith partners to bring Dr. King’s vision to fruition.

Make It Happen: Give Now to the Capital Campaign With $458,000 raised through the Capital Campaign and a $250,000 allocation from SJC’s reserves, our current total is just over $700,000. We need approximately $850,000 to expand our building. Since every Seaside member will enjoy the new space at SJC, our goal is to have 100% participation in the campaign. Check with your financial advisor about the tax benefits of these two win-win giving options: 1. If you are 70 ½ or older, and taking Required Minimum Distributions from an IRA, you can make your gift directly from your RMD. The amount of your gift will not count as income and may lessen your taxable income. If you did this in 2018, you can do it again in 2019. 2. If you own appreciated stock, you can gift investments directly to SJC’s brokerage account and save capital gains taxes. Whether you choose one of these options, charge your gift through PayPal, or write a check, every gift counts. For more information, contact Marilyn Feldman at [email protected]. Pledge forms are on the News page of Seaside’s website. A special offer: Inspired by Seaside’s trip to Israel, Eric Doroshow created a 16” x 20” print of his original watercolors, The Twelve Tribes of Israel. Eric is selling this artwork, on display at Seaside, for $60, and he will donate all proceeds to the Capital Campaign through April. Order forms are at Seaside and at www.ImagesInspired.net.

Page 4 Seaside Jewish Community January 2019 Please Pay 2019 Membership Dues SJC’s membership year is the calendar year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31), which means that 2019 membership dues of $180 per adult are now due. An invoice for the dues is included on page 9, and we will also be mailing members invoices in late January. A Taste of Mussar Jan. 10 Our Mussar course continues at SJC on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Mussar is a spiritual discipline within Judaism, a resource our course participants use for elevating our inner lives as we continuously explore and nurture our personal soul traits and virtues. We meet on the second Thursday of each month. Our discussion guide is Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar, by Alan Morinis. In January, we'll discuss the trait of Honor and will tie it to the six traits we’ve already studied: Humility, Patience, Gratitude, Compassion, Order, and Equanimity. If you are interested in learning more about our Taste of Mussar study series, please call our moderator, George Beckerman, at 202-903-5060. Book Group Jan. 17 Please join the SJC Book Group at SJC on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. to discuss The Fish That Ate the Whale: The Life and Times of America’s Banana King, by Rich Cohen. Don’t let the title deceive you! This book is about the banana business in America and Samuel Zemurray, a Russian-born Jew who emigrated to the United States in 1892, who not only became the “king” of the banana business, but he orchestrated the overthrow of Central American governments. This is a story most of us don’t know and is told in a most engaging manner. Contact Enid Zafran at [email protected] if you plan to attend, so we know how many to expect.

Haftorah Session Jan. 28 The Haftorah class will meet at SJC on Monday, Jan. 28, at 3 p.m. The session will focus on Chayei Sarah (1 Kings 1:1-31). Join Bathsheba (yes, the same Bathsheba coveted by King David when he saw her bathing on a roof) and Nathan the Prophet as they connive to have the senile King David anoint Solomon as his successor. We shall look at the David and Bathsheba backstory and see how two former antagonists have come together for a common purpose. What does this story of palace intrigue have to do with a Parshah involving the passing of the revered Mother of Israel? Jewish History Program On Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 4 p.m., at SJC, the first two lectures in our exciting new Adult Education program - Jewish Intellectual History: 16th to 20th Century - will be facilitated by Mat Ash. This multipart lecture series by University of Pennsylvania Prof. Daniel Ruderman explores how Jews have looked at and defined our identity since 1600, when Jews faced dramatic changes in a modern social and intellectual world that was radically different from earlier times. How were the beliefs and guideposts of earlier religious life to be understood and observed in the modern era? We will hear the views of historians addressing: “What does it mean to be a Jew?” We will then explore the major social, economic and political forces present during this period and their impact on Jews. Join us as we investigate our past, discuss our present, and envision our future.

Page 6 Seaside Jewish Community January 2019 Religious School News The SJC religious school was in full swing as we closed out 2018. The classes studied Hebrew, Israel, history, holidays, and culture. A few highlights: The Dalet class is learning about Judaism’s relationship to other religions and had a deep discussion about how Jews, Christians, and Muslims differ in their view of Jesus. The Gimmel class learned about David’s friendship with Jonathan. The Bet class took a “journey” to Tel Aviv and learned about the city. The Alef class learned about the menorah and how the Chanukah and Shabbat menorahs are different. The children really enjoyed learning about Chanukah throughout the month of December. Teen News The teens at SJC have been busy during the past month. December 7-9 was BBYO’s Liberty region's new member convention. Seaside was represented by five teens at that convention. The kids met fellow regional teens and learned about BBYO. The following weekend, the teens had a “lock-in” at SJC hosted by Sara and Jeffrey Rosen. The kids had pizza and other snacks, watched movies, and played games. A great time was had by all!

December Shabbat Dinner On Friday, Dec. 7, Seasiders were treated to a wonderful Chanukah Shabbat dinner that was enjoyed by all who attended. January 2019 Seaside Jewish Community Page 7 SJC Annual Donations for Community Service Each year, SJC, via the Community Service Committee, chooses mainly local non-profit organizations to support through monetary donations. We believe in helping those that take care of the people in our community. SJC budgets for these donations, but the amount is increased when you select Community Service Programs when donating to SJC. Thanks to all who donated! This year, SJC donated to the following organizations as recommended by the committee: A Way Home helps men who are released from prison acclimate back into the community. Services include helping to obtain housing, job search assistance, and transportation. Camp Rehoboth seeks to build a strong sense of community and create a positive environment among all people, gay and straight, in the Rehoboth area.
