according to henry james, “summer afternoon—summer afternoon have always been the two most beautiful words in the english language.” however, for me, (and most likely many other local business owners) in the midst of a busy summer, they are more like “september, september!” just knowing that the most perfect month on the calendar is waiting on the horizon is enough to keep you going when the going gets tough! and this year, our september was exceptionally perfect!. . . 80° clear blue sky days with identical ocean temps of clean and calm seas for dipping in... and a wide open quiet and vacant beach. . .need i say more?

Normally after the sun comes out, i am blessed to hear so many nice compliments coming from happy faces. But after announcing in my last editor letter that i was not planning on making a holiday sun this year, i was instead greeted with a fair share of disappointments from readers with sad faces. i mostly heard, you can’t possibly mean that i have to wait until spring for the next sun! that’s so long!”

the editor in me naturally began to feel a little guilty. My executive decision ‘to not publish’ for the holidays backfired on me:-). so i reverted with the proverbial ‘it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind’, and since i enjoyed such a delightful month off, i packed my beach bag away and set out to work on all things ‘holiday’.

i came to realize, in a new light, the depth of kindness surrounding me. to know that the sun is making our island a brighter place is enough to keep me warm all winter long. i hope you all enjoy a most wonderful season of joy along with your special ‘2 suns-in-1’ holiday issue. Until spring. . .

We Were Called the Beach BoysYears ago i started picking up those free papers that seemed to be everywhere. i browsed through them and discarded them right away. one day a few years ago i saw a bright colorful paper that had a picture of our beach on the front cover and it caught my eye. once i started read-ing this paper that was called the sun by-the-sea i couldn’t stop until i was finished. there were stories of years past in the Wildwoods with pictures and memories of readers who had some of their best times living or spending their vaca-tions here growing up. i started to relate to these stories and would say to myself i remember that person, building, club, storm, etc. My family already heard my stories. so i saw my chance to branch out and relate my past experiences to the readers of this paper.

as i am now in my seventies i figure i better write them down now before i forget! some things just stand out for ever in your memory. in the 50’s i was in my early teens and looking forward to another summer working in Wildwood. i wasn’t sure what i wanted to do until i talked to my good friend Vince Carberry after the school year ended. he lived on my block in Philadelphia and his parents also spent their summers in Wildwood. he was just hired by Mac’s beach concessions owned by ed and jim Mullin. they were licensed to have umbrellas and beach chair rentals on the beach in Wildwood. he took me to where the Mullins had their office and happily i was hired for the last position. i was elated. i was going to work on the beach and get paid too. i always loved the beach and spent every summer there. i still do. Prior to that i worked summers as a newspaper boy, bus boy, and even hauled suitcases in my wagon for tips at the train station at oak and Nj avenue for vacationers who arrived by train.

the beach stands were located about every two blocks on the beach. they were large wooden storage boxes on legs that held the umbrellas and chairs and were locked up at night. My first day i reported to the “ office” at 9:30 am. it was located at Magnolia avenue and the boardwalk, underneath groff’s restaurant. the restaurant is still open to this day.

“our office” consisted of two large dark storage rooms which held all the umbrellas and chairs stored there for the winter. it was like entering a cave with a few light bulbs strung up on the beams. i expected bats to fly out.

i was introduced to the other 12 young guys and we had a lot in common, age wise, in school, and parents who spent the summers at the shore. We all hit it off great and we had a zest for fun in the sun and became a close knit group for the summer months. We were paid $5 dollars a day to start and worked seven days a week. When it rained we repaired the broken umbrellas for a few hours and went home. if you wanted a day off, you just had to ask for it, but no one did. We started our day at the cave, clowned around, and sang the popular songs of the day. Most of us were loaded in the back of a pickup truck and were driven down ocean avenue and dropped off at our assigned streets. even the ride was entertaining to us as we yelled to the girls heading to the beach. at ten o’clock sharp the boardwalk speakers played “god Bless america” or the National anthem. (this tradition still continues today.) the flags were raised on

the beach flag poles at two locations by the lifeguards. in charge was Captain dutch hoffman and Lt. Lou stopper. everyone stopped and stood , holding their hand over their chest during the anthem. that was our signal to set up our stands and we were open and ready for the day. the flags were lowered at 5 o’clock.

My street was youngs avenue and it was the busiest on the beach. i had about 65 umbrellas in that box and about a dozen chairs. Weekends i was sold out by two o’clock. the other stands held about 50 umbrellas. We got a laugh at the methods used by families in putting up their umbrellas. there was the overhead thrust with the staff into the sand, just missing the toes, the spinning of the umbrella like a top, taking a hammer and pounding the staff into the sand, or just tying the umbrella to a chair, stroller or cooler. We learned a method which took less than a minute. We opened the umbrella with the staff attached and held one hand high and the other low on the heavy wooden staff and worked it in a circle while applying pressure downward to make a deep hole. it stayed in all day long.

to us guys working on the beach it was something special. Besides the life guards we had the tannest bodies in town. our bare feet were like leather and we could walk on the hot sand with no pain. spending seven hours a day for months will do that for you. Most stands had the same families com-ing back each summer and we were all happy to see them again. they would give us sandwiches and soda and treated us like family. But we all agreed it was the girls we met on our beaches who were special to us. some were there for a few weeks of vacation and others worked on the boardwalk for the summer. We tried not to get too serious with them at our age but some just broke your heart when they left after the summer. i often wonder to this day where are they living now, are they married, kids, what do they look like? do they ever come back to Wildwood with their families?

in the evening we would sometimes get a group and head down to diamond Beach in the Crest and build a bon fire. it was full of sand dunes and inhabited by jackrabbits then. Under the stars with the sounds of the ocean waves nearby we roasted hotdogs, marshmallows, and whatever snacks

we could bring from home. We sang songs, someone had a guitar, drank sodas, told stories, and made out with our girls if we were lucky. sounds corny now but it was wholesome and innocent. some of us had surfboards and after work we would hang around and surf until the lights started to shine bright on the boardwalk and it got dark. i got my first surfboard at scoop taylor’s sporting goods store where Kona is now at rio grande avenue. it was a longboard, about 12 feet long, no strap attached, it weighed about 50 pounds, and it cost me about $60 of my savings. it still sits in my garage, even though my dad told me to throw it out twenty years ago because it took up so much room.

Weekends we met at the starlight Ballroom on the board-walk. We let the lifeguards use our umbrellas during the day and they let us in the dance for free at night. they worked as ticket takers and bouncers there. the dance with its rock and roll music, was always packed. dick Clark was a dj early in his career there. to meet a girl at the dance and walk her back to her place was special. they came from towns and schools we never heard of. the starlight is a story in itself.

Labor day was the end of the summer and time to pack it in. the umbrellas were stored in that cave for the winter. there were goodbyes and hugs around the few remaining days as we started to head home. i worked four summers. see you next summer did not apply for everyone. some of the Beach Boys went off to college or enlisted in the service. some just grew up, moved, got married and worked the everyday mundane jobs. We never got together again as a group or really kept in contact. time waits for no man. over the years the beach got wider, the crowds got smaller, the beach stands were removed, and the Beach Boys just went their separate ways and are no longer called boys.

one day last summer i was sitting on my porch when a car pulled up across the street. a stranger walked up to my steps and looked at me for a few seconds and said “Butch Love you haven’t changed a bit.“ i was floored when he said he was Bob Kain and worked with me on the beach for three summers. i mean it was 55 years ago when i last saw Bob. he explained his parents had sold their summer house soon after his third year of working and he hadn’t returned since. he now lives outside Philadelphia, retired, and is married to the same girl joan who he met working on the beach many years ago. i asked him if he had any contact with the old gang. recently he went to a 50 year high school reunion and met my old friend Vince Carberry’s wife. she informed him that Vince died about five years ago. i didn’t know that and felt sad. i asked him how he found me after all these years. he stated his sister had rented a house in North Wildwood and he was visiting and read a paper the sUN and saw my name in a previous story. By chance he drove to my house to see if i still lived there. so through the magic of this paper old friends can be reunited.

i go to the beach now with my family and settle into our space with our chairs, blanket, coolers, buckets, etc. My grandchil-dren ian, sophia, and delia tell their dad “ let Poppy put up the beach umbrella, he is good at it.” old skills are never forgotten. For the children who spend their summers at the shore now, cherish these wonderful moments because they will be your memories 60 years or so from now.

They also contain fiber which makes you feel fuller than you actually are, and we all need our fiber! Now here’s the kicker ladies and gentlemen…you do this for 5 days out of the week with a healthy workout regimen and I will guarantee you that you will feel better, look better and be able to have your cake and it eat too! It’s not hard; you will actually become acclimated to it and feel much better! Bad carbs such as fries, fried chicken, hoagies, burgers... well they fill you, but they make you come to a crashing halt! If you eat properly, you won’t crash and burn because you’re not adding bad fats and carbs to your body.

Friends gathered on the Wildwood Crest beach with a full moon rising and an ocean of memories of 3 friends who passed away within days of one another, erik, Mike & Mark. 9/29/12

For me, the memories go all the way back to the late sixties and early seventies, to Philip P. Baker school, to Mrs. russell, Mr. Porter, and Mr. donaldson, of cut ups and hijinks executed by pre-teen adoles-cents accompanied by the soundtrack of hearty laughter, most of which sprang from the smiling face of Michael Poster-nock. take a look at our eighth grade class picture from 1971: some of us look too serious, as if the gravity of the event and the changes which are about to take place have cast a shroud upon their mood, while others appear to be stifling a laugh, probably the result of some kind of rib-bing. and there, in the second row from the top, just to the right of my own somber mug, is Mike, unable to hold it in. the first time i saw that picture, i knew: the fun was going to move right along into Wildwood high school.

When we arrived there that september, one of the upper classmen told Mike that we were just “two-by four Freshmen,” whatever that meant, and it just cracked him up and we adopted it as our rallying cry for the rest of the year. one of those who joined the circle was another fun-loving cut-up from our new batch of friends who lived on the other side of the island: Mark Matteucci or, “tooch” as he was known. “tooch” is one of those nicknames that flow naturally from the lips of those born and raised in the shadow of Philadel-phia, (as in “yo, tooch!”) and he wore it proudly. one of the most easygoing and friendliest people that i have ever met, i felt as though i had known Mark all of my life and he fit in well with the group of misfits from Philip Baker that i was proud to call my friends. We shared classes to-gether and were team mates on the track team and once we got into trouble on the bus on our way home from a meet when we mooned our coach, Mr. gable, when he passed us in his car on the parkway. i can’t remember exactly, but i am sure that Mr. gable exacted justice immediately after-ward through a series of wind sprints, and we paid the price together and laughed about it for a long time.

and then, along came erik. a year behind us in class, erik hailed from Wildwood Crest and i knew his family as acquain-tances of mine. his circle linked up with ours and the pranks and the fun continued and one night he bailed me out when we were on our way home from a concert at the spectrum in Philadelphia. it was

late and i was driving my parents’ station wagon and everyone was asleep except erik, who was riding shotgun. i was hav-ing trouble staying awake and i said to him, “you’re going to have to drive.” so there was erik, all of sixteen years old, no license, no permit, his first time ever behind a wheel and scared out of his mind, steer-ing us safely back to Wildwood.

When high school ended and we all said our goodbyes, i went off to johnson state College in Vermont with Mike Bernstein. erik, with a guitar slung over his shoulder, soon followed, accompanied by the rossi brothers. From of a jam session in his dorm room one night was born ‘the e dubbs scrubb Band,’ a percussion ensemble with a sound comparable to skiffle, which gave the Beatles their start (except we didn’t go as far). i played the spoons and Mike was on a washboard and we brought the house down the first night we played at our favorite watering hole, the salty dog. our playlist featured blues standards such as ‘sloppy drunk,’ ‘sweet home Chicago,’ and erik’s signature piece, ‘the Big Bamboo’ (“ay, yi, yi ,yi,…Working for the yankee dollar…”). erik christened us each with a hip nickname and mine was “Blind joe,” a moniker that a blues musi-cian might adopt, and i still use it to this day, whenever i am guilty of missing the obvious.

When college ended we went our separate ways once again. Mike and i wound up in Nevada, Pos lived in Maryland, dubbs spent some time in hawaii, while tooch stayed in the area. eventually, we all gravitated back home and got together for more fun and laughter. Most of the time it was at russo’s bar, where Pos would make appearances as a celebrity bartender, and tooch would stop in for a cold one, and erik would sit in my dad’s barber chair and play his guitar. But before we knew it, we all became busy with our own lives and the circle spread apart.

and then, this past Fall, within six mind-numbing days of one another, we lost them, these three cherished members of our circle of friends. i am certain that i speak for all of us who mourn their loss and the loss of the opportunity to create new memories with them and to laugh about the old ones as well. as a measure of healing, we should all take comfort in the fact that someday we will see them again when our circle becomes whole.

The greater wildwoods lions Club, chartered on October 23, 1952, is one of the oldest service clubs in the area and is celebrating its 60th an-niversary this year. It’s part of Lions International which has more than 1.6 million members in 188 countries. Lions International has an almost 100 year commitment of service to the blind and visually impaired dating back to its founding in 1917 when Helen Keller chal-lenged the then fledgling Lions clubs to make a difference in the world for those afflicted with blindness and diseases of the eye. And what a difference the Lions have made! The Lions have established the majority of the world’s eye banks, built thousands of clinics and eye re-search facilities and guide dog schools; conducted hundreds of thousands of glaucoma screenings annually; educated the public about the dangers of diabetic retinopathy and cataract and collected millions of eyeglasses for redistribution to the needy.On a local level, the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley has provided eye tis-sue to allow more than 14,000 people to have eyesight restoring operations since 1957. Over 100 people from Cape May County have received corneal transplants under this program. The Wildwood Lions count among their accomplishments the establishment of the Burdette Tomlin Hospital Eye Clinic

which has moved to the Volunteers in Medicine facility in Cape May Court House at which free eye screenings are conducted and eyeglasses provided for those that qualify.The Lions reward good scholarship also, having provided well over $100,000 to graduating high school seniors at Wildwood High, Wildwood Catholic, Lower Cape May Regional & Cape May Tech and also have sponsored a Little League team for many years.The Wildwood Lions also conceived, constructed and manage the 112 unit senior citizen complex known as the Lions Center in downtown Wildwood which was built with the idea of keeping our valuable senior citizens on the island in close proximity of their family, life-long friends, churches and synagogues.Most of the Wildwood Lions fundrais-ing is centered around three events: the Annual Raffle in April, the Beef n’ Beer in June and our famous Pancake Breakfast in October.for membership information, please contact the lions center at 729-1111. the wildwood lions have two regular dinner meetings monthly at various lo-cal restaurants on the second & fourth thursday. if you are a civic-minded individual and want to serve your com-munity, please consider membership.

Closed Sundays and National Holidaysactivity at the museum is winding down and we are now open thursday, Friday and saturday, from 9:00 aM to 2:00 PM. if you have a special need for our services, you can always call the museum and leave a message and someone will get back to you.it was as wonderful summer with more visitors during the summer months, than we had all of last year. it appears more peo-ple are finding our little museum and are certainly expressing their appreciation for what we do. We continue the sale of our pavers, and hopefully in a few short weeks, the first installation will be made.how many of you remember “aloha tropi-cal drinks” on the Boardwalk? this summer a gentleman by the name of tony Karpov-ich donated two coconut heads that deco-rated the interior of the establishment.. john “iggy” gigliotti, “Mr. tram Car” gave us a souvenir snow globe with the tram car inside the globe. a 1939 Wildwood bro-chure came from gerald stimmler that can be found in our “Beach” reference book. an item that gave me cause for reflection was a menu sent in by george Carlson jr. from Fitzharris restaurant. Fitzharris was a sea Food restaurant at Farragut road and New jersey avenue in Wildwood Crest (now duffy’s on the Lake). By the looks of the prices, it must have existed in the 1950s. the most expensive item on the menu was for $1.25. it included a clam cocktail, clam chowder, half broiled lobster, French fried potatoes, Cole slaw and dessert. all plat-ters included bread, butter and coffee. a sirloin steak dinner was $1.00. a pork chop platter was .60¢. remember, the minimum wage in the mid 50s was .65¢ an hour ris-ing to $1.00 an hour by 1957. they say these things are relative, but i would be hard-pressed to find a lobster dinner for minimum wage today.

Mr. Carlson also sent us a brochure from the very first Convention hall, stock certificates from holly Beach realty and Wildwood & suburban realty Co., and a vacation guide put out by the City of Wildwood in the 1940s.From the estate of jim seibert, we received a collection of Wildwood high school memorabilia including, photographs, Wild-wood Warrior newspapers and a collection of football programs among other items. Christina taglialatela dug deep and came up with a number of photos from the ital-ian/american Club from the early 1950s.at this time of the year, i work very closely with the 50 Plus reunion Committee who sponsors an annual dinner dance for all Wildwood high school students that at-tended school 1962 and earlier. they work very, very hard on this project and on sun-day, october 7, the affair was held at Con-vention hall. over 200 former students and their guests were in attendance. this gala is in its 29th year, the first being held in the tiki room at the Lodge in North Wildwood. the first chairman was Max C. Mayer, Class of 1931. While times have changed, and people and places we knew are there no more, some things never change. typed at the end of the 1983 program booklet are the words: “My heart is warm with the friends i make.”in closing we ask that you give special thanks for your blessings this thanksgiving, and may you always have love to share, health to spare and friends that care.Until next time . . . . . . .be happy and be well!

remember when you bought your Christmas tree from Canning’s Christmas tree lot? We were on the corner of Wisteria and New jersey avenue in Wildwood Crest. From approximately 1958 to 1977, my dad, Frank Canning and i sold and flocked Christmas trees, and also sold decorations from after thanksgiving up to Christmas eve.

Before the building known as the Colony arms apartments, which is located on that same lot now, was built in 1978, there were 3 little garages that were on the lot. For many years the garages were used typically for storage, but then in 1958 my dad Frank and Mom dorothy decided to sell Christmas trees and a few outside decorations for the holi-days. right after thanksgiving the stakes for the trees would be put in place. My dad and i would travel to Philadelphia and pick up the trees at the Philadelphia train yards. We would bring back beautiful balsams, firs, and pine trees, and also a variety of Christmas decorations which included over 100 wreaths to sell in the end garage which we converted into a little store. We put a space heater in the little store which kept us warm on some of the freezing days and nights of the ap-proaching holidays. having a full time job during the day, i was only able to help my dad at night, but worked the trees all day saturday and sunday. sometime in the late 60’s or 70’s we bought a flocking machine. Needless to say the trees were gorgeous with the flocking. along with the decorations that were sold in the little store, we also sold hand made grave blankets for loved ones.

out kitchen in the summer. so what was a Christmas store and tree business in the winter, became a take-out kitchen in the summer. seems like my parents and aunt Kay, may have been early entrepreneurs of their time. But no one was thinking that back then. While the front garage was used for taking orders and selling salads and desserts etc., the middle garage had to be converted into a cooking kitchen. there would be 1 day a week where they would have a “special”, such as baked chicken with stuffing and mashed potatoes. Back in the 60’s and 70’s there was still “no meat on Friday’s” in some churches. this made their fish platters so popular that on Friday’s there would be a line from the pavement to inside the store. the platters at the time were only $1.40, and that included French Fries and Cole slaw, roll, butter and utensils. Wow!!! Most of our help throughout the years were the local high school students.

in 1978 a new era was started. on the lot where the 3 little garages once stood, my wife rita and i built a new Canning’s take-out Kitchen, our home and the Colony arms apartments.

also in those early years, my dad the late Captain Frank Canning, ran an 8 hr. party boat called “the angler” out of sinns dock between sweetbriar and Wisteria road on Park Blvd. his Father Patrick (my grandfa-ther) owned a boat called “the reliance” which fished out of Cape May. after my grandfather Patrick passed away, my fa-ther, Frank, sold his boat, “the angler”, and bought “the reliance” from his mother, which sailed out of Kurtz’s dock between sweetbriar and Cardinal road on Park Blvd. For years because i loved fishing and being a deck hand, i tried to be a deck hand on my dad’s boat, but because i suffered from motion sickness, it was never meant to be.

My dad, Captain Frank Canning, also fished commercially in the winter for cod fish. his boat, “the reliance”, was docked at 2 Mile dock for the winter. When rita and i were in high school we would double date on the weekends with one of my best friends and his date. after we took our girlfriends home (around 11 pm), we would head down to 2 Mile dock, my friend and i would bait-up hooks for my dad to use for his cod fishing. this way we could earn some spending money to take our girlfriends on future dates.

there are so many great memories i have of growing up in Wildwood Crest, but i hope these are just a few that bring back “happy Memories” in the 100 year celebration of Wildwood Crest.

If you’ve ever visited the West Coast, I hope you carved in some time to visit the notorious piers in San Francisco or any other location wild seals call home. Now Wildwood is getting some seals of our own… kind of!With the beautiful rockwork of River Adventure at Raging Waters fresh in our minds, Jack Morey thought the Zoom Phloom on Surfside Pier could use some sprucing up. The rock work, waterfalls and loading station are all in the midst of a major redesign that will freshen up one of the longest, tallest, and steepest log flumes on the East Coast and provide some beautiful scenery and photo ops. Inspired by the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the Zoom Phloom makeover endeavors to create a Mo-rey’s Piers “Sea of Life” out of the existing rockwork and run outs on the ride. Our “Sea of Life” will feature hand carved seals, sharks, an octopus and more! Joe Pez of Concrete Links, the same artist who hand-carved the rocks, logs and waterfalls of River Ad-venture last spring with a steak knife, will perform the sea life carvings for this project. Construction began in early October and our East Coast seals are already starting to take shape in the form of wire frames around the giant globe at the foot of the ride. Our largest seal will appear to balance the globe on his nose. The wire frames for our stony sea life will be sprayed with gunite, carved to perfection by the aforementioned skilled hands and then stained to a picture perfect finish.

Our piers have begun to flourish with exciting new artsy installations. Aside from the gorgeous renovation of Rag-ing Waters’ Lazy River into River Ad-venture, we commissioned a local surf artist to create larger than life prints, portraits and paintings on shipping containers on Adventure Pier. The shipping container project cre-ates a distinctive and vivid edge to Adventure Pier and opened up new signage and art opportunities. Art-ist David Macomber of Shark Sugar NJ gave Adventure Pier’s shipping containers a new, extreme look. His work has been featured in Surfer, Eastern Surf and Surfing magazines. Macomber’s passion for surfing and the Jersey Shore permeates his artistic style and made him an ideal candidate for Morey’s Piers Ad-venture Pier Container Art Project. The whole concept of re-using prefab-ricated shipping containers has been championed for several years now by the eco and contemporary arts design communities. The original invention of shipping containers had birth in New Jersey out of a necessity to im-prove efficiency and cut down on theft. With today’s over abundance of im-ports, containers have become a low cost method for the eco and arts com-munities to create shelter. At Morey’s Piers, the containers serve a variety of practical and aesthetic purposes ranging from storage, office space, signage and now extreme branding for Morey’s Piers largest collection of extreme rides!Just as we like to bring new exciting

The upcoming presidential election had me thinking a lot lately, sometimes backwards, to our founding fathers. anyone that knows of the intellect and wisdom of those great men and uses them as role models for our leaders today has very high expectations, to say the least. I know I am always disillusioned beyond words at the usual choices of the presidential candidates.

The core of those great men of the first continental congress were brilliant scholars, multi faceted and extremely articulate men - the cream of the crop of the early colonies. how often have we seen the likes of them? Sadly, not very often. It wasn’t long after those men faded into the history books that we saw the beginning of our downfall - the professional politician.

Some of our presidents over the last 200 years were gifted with a few of the talents of the first leaders, but I know of one who had them all and then some. This was Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th, and my favorite president. I am not alone in my estimation of him. histo-rians usually rank him among the top 4 or 5 presidents and his image is, after all, one of 4 chosen to be on Mount Rushmore.

If I had to use one word to describe this complex man who accomplished so much in his relatively short life it would be enthusiasm. he had a boundless, almost manic passion for everything that he approached in life.

This focused intensity began at an early age. Theodore was born in New York city on october 27, 1858. he was an asthmatic and a very sickly child. Through sheer will, self disci-pline and arduous physical exercise however, he was able to build himself up into a rugged physical specimen. he would be, despite this past ill health, actually a runner up in harvard’s boxing championship. he continued boxing as an exercise even when a middle age president in the White house, as well as being one of the first western students of Ju Jitsu. By the way, he also graduated from harvard, Magna cum Laude.

Theodore’s personal life story is much too complex to delve into too deeply here, but I will try to outline his career and accomplishments briefly to get a glimpse into the life of this phenomenal man.

Theodore went to columbia Law School after harvard but left when the call to public service came. he ran for the New York State as-sembly in 1881, a seat he won and would serve a total of 3 terms. It was at this time he began to champion the cause of the working man and all the related social ills of the industrial revolution. he introduced more bills than any other assemblyman in the State’s history and quickly became the leader of the Republican party’s reform wing. President harrison said of Roosevelt, “he wanted to put an end to all the evil in the world between sunrise and sunset.”

In 1889 he was appointed to the civil Service commission, a department which he would eventually run. he was successful in expanding and improving the service, trying always to create fair and honest playing field for job testing and selections. he left the civil

Service in 1895 to take the appointment as President of the Board of Police commission-ers of New York. once again, he was resolute in successfully reforming an institution that was cor-rupt and mismanaged. his standards for honesty and accountability were of the highest order and he earned a reputation for these virtues.

In 1897, newly elect-ed President William McKinley named Theo-dore assistant Secretary of the Navy. Through his knowledge and long time study of history, he knew the strategic importance of a large and powerful navy and did all he could to make that a reality.

The Spanish ameri-can War broke out in 1898 and a very zealous Theodore, an extremely nationalistic patriot, re-signed his position to organize a volunteer cav-alry regiment he christened “The Rough Riders”. This colorful group was a diverse and unlikely collection of characters - tough cowboys, ivy leaguers, native americans and others. The regiment was sent to cuba where Roosevelt gained national fame for leading victorious charges up Kettle and San Juan Hills in July 1898. He rose to full Colo-nel during this time and was also nominated to receive the medal of honor for his heroism. he did not receive this during his life but was awarded it posthumously in 2001.

after leaving the military Roosevelt ran for and was elected governor of New York where he served from 1899 to 1901. once again he showed his natural activism and pursuit of reform wherever needed. he was particularly successful in helping to improve the conditions of women and the horrible misuse of children in the work place. another major success was instituting a franchise tax on corporations. he was adamant in his belief that wealthy indus-trialists were under regulated and were shown too much favoritism.

In 1900, William McKinley was running for his second term as president. he asked Theo-dore to be his running mate, which of course he accepted.

McKinley was reelected but just 6 months later he was shot and killed by an assassin. Vice President Roosevelt was sworn in as Presi-dent on Sept. 14, 1901 at 43 years of age. he became this nation’s youngest leader. he was also the country’s richest president but he had a just barely hidden contempt for the rich. as he did when he was governor of New York, he sought to better the conditions of the working class but now on a national scale. one of the slogans that became part of his platform was

“the Square Deal” which he used mostly in relation to his efforts for the “wage earner.”

Roosevelt, unlike most of our earliest founding fathers, was definitely not an isolationist and saw the u.S. as the worlds police-men. he took an aggres-sive approach to world affairs as was exhibited by the deployment of uS Troops in the Philippines during a time of unrest and a war ship to Panama during an uprising. his foreign policy motto be-came “speak softly and carry a big stick.”

The 1904 Presiden-tial elections saw the un-elected incumbent win by a landslide margin. he began to focus more and more on something he thought was a sacred duty - Protecting the country’s natural resources. he was a pioneer in environmen-tal activism.

he said -“the con-servation of our natural

resources and their proper use constitute the fundamental problem which underlies almost every other problem of our national life” Some highlights of his efforts were:• Creating a national bird preserve which was the start of the wildlife refuge system.• Working hand in hand and consulted with the top conservationist of the time, gifford Pinchot.• Establishing the U.S. Forest Service.• Passing legislation that protected 300 million acres of wilderness which would later become the National Parks System. (Including the grand canyon)• Creating 51 wildlife refuges. • Organizing the North American Conserva-tion congress.

one of the greatest accomplishments of his presidency was the negotiating, planning and building of the Panama canal. This was a priceless aid to the country for national security as well as commerce. It was begun in 1904 and completed in 1914.

Despite his nationalism, he displayed great talents several times as an international diplo-mat. Most noteworthy of these was helping to end the Russo/Japanese war which probably prevented a world war. he won the Nobel Peace Prize for this in 1905.

his long standing position of creating a powerful naval fleet was punctuated by build-ing and mobilizing his “great White fleet”. arranged to show the world our far reaching, great strength, four u.S. battleships squadrons, all painted white with red white and blue decorations, traveled around the entire globe.

Theodore ended his second and last term, in 1909 and then departed, with great enthu-siasm, for an african Safari. It was as much a

scientific expedition as it was a hunting trip. Thousands of specimens of flora and fauna were sent to various u.S. museums.

upon return he took a long vacation through europe until he finally had his fill of retirement. Theodore heard the call to public service once again and entered into the race as the Republican presidential candidate. Not able to win the nomination he helped organize a new third party, the “Progressive Party”. This new party’s platform embraced more of the reform and activism he fought so strongly for in the past.

he said the Republican Party at that time had become “the party of privilege and special interest.” he also said “this country belongs to the people. Its resources, its businesses, its laws, its institutions should be utilized, maintained or altered in whatever manner will best promote the general interest”.

“I believe the Progressive movement is for making life a little easier for all of our people, a movement to take the burdens off the men and especially the women and children of our country”. The middle class as we know it now, had not evolved at this point. The majority of people were struggling working class laborers, the destitute poor and the very rich.

he remarked that he felt as “strong as a bull moose” in this new campaign. The “Bull Moose Party” soon became the nickname of the progressives.

on october 14, 1912, a would be assassin fired a shot into Theodore’s chest. after the attacker was subdued, Theodore refused to go to the hospital until he finished his speech. he said “I do not care a rap about being shot”. “It takes more than that to kill a bull moose”.

he was hospitalized only after completing his speech. Doctors felt it too risky to remove the bullet and it was left in his chest the rest of his life. The recovery took a while and caused him to lose a lot of momentum in the presidential race. he came in second, losing to a Democrat Woodrow Wilson.

In 1913 Theodore was in the mood for another adventure and embarked on a year long trip to South america. This mostly scientific expedition took the group through some very harsh conditions and Theodore was stricken with Malaria and a serious leg infection. he returned a very sick man.

Theodore recovered and devoted much of his time to reading and writing. a speed reader, he could read 2 - 3 books a day. he could also speak three foreign languages and read seven! he also wrote over the course of his life, thirty seven books.

When the u.S. entered World War I in 1917, Theodore requested that President Wil-son allow him to organize a volunteer company, like he did the Rough Riders. The President of course, refused the 59 year old former colonel.

Theodore died on January 6, 1919 in his sleep of a coronary embolism. Vice President Thomas Marshall said “Death had to take Roosevelt sleeping, for if he had been awake, there would have been a fight”.

the cold wet salt spray on your face during the next fall striper trip lets you know you are alive. it is part of this experience which makes you feel real life. Life which is both a celebration and a gift, life that cannot be bought or sold because it is not ours. it is given to us by a great spirit to enjoy. these are the thoughts of the first true conservation-ist of this country. they come from the culture of the Native american indians who fished these very same waters.

speaking of giving. . . i’ll brush out my holiday Wish List. . . so here it goes:i wish my waist line will be the same at the end of the holiday season as it was in the beginning.i wish you all experience the delight of a striped Bass fillet stuffed with Crab meat.i wish this winter season blesses us with a short and mild season.i wish that you will plan some fishing gifts for the youngsters in your family.i wish that you will take time to develop tomorrow’s future anglers.i wish Marine Fisheries would finally treat sport anglers as an equal to com-mercial fishermen.i wish that this wonderful great country of ours would come together for the betterment of all.i wish you find peace, health, and joy this season. god Bless,

as mother nature paints the landscape with her brilliant colors, its tells us all that the fall season has arrived. thru her seasons nature reminds us that all life is a circle. so far, this fall has been fairly spectacular in regards to the weather. (until sandy came along) the fishing season still has been slow to shift gears, as the summer species seem to like it by hanging around. as the days of November and december slip by the hope is that the stripers should arrive and bite the bottom of the boat out from under you. the recent history of the striper bite has been that it is occurring much later the last couple of years. Last year, december was the best bite for the stripers. Prior to the last closure of seabass a trip produced some keeper Bass, trigger fish, Porgy, and Blues. Man are those seabass great table fare. hopefully, seabass will be around when the season is reopened in November. Co-incidentally the opening is just in time for the strong windy frontal weather systems, which will produce big seas and kill the opportunity for some fresh seabass. imagine that! i doubt it’s just circumstantial planning on Marine Fisheries Part.the delaware Bay seems to hold Croak-ers, Weakfish, and Blues until late december, so all is not lost. Pick your weather days and enjoy a beautiful fall day on the Bay. remember the water temperature has dropped and is more dangerous to fisherman whether you are in the surf, or a boat. take time to make a float plan and double check your safety equipment. Navigation of dangerous waters like the rips requires a proper respect for its unpredictable na-ture. the United states Coast guard are a tremendous organization, but in murky
