Most of us wouldn’t think of not voting, even in California, our state of losing battles. I would like to see that attitude extend to our Association’s elections. At the general meeting on May 9th, 2019 we will have final nominations and then be voting on the 2019 -2020 positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and four Board of Directors. Directors must be members in good standing and an NRA member for one year prior to nomination. Officers must have the same with the addition of serving at least one full term as an officer or director. My best advice to potential nominees is this: if you can’t look at a good friend and tell him / her “no,” then you probably shouldn’t run. Your board makes decisions based on the safety, what’s best for the largest part of our membership, and long-term survival of our range. Sometimes hard decisions must be made. For those who follow my monthly ‘Point of View’ you will have seen the statement “We Are One Association.” The meaning of this is simple. We are not Escondido Rifle and other stuff, Escondido Trap and other stuff, Escondido Pistol and other stuff, etc. You get the idea. We ARE One Association. Even if your preferred enjoyment is throwing hatchets at bamboo targets, we all need to be involved to keep this top notch, fantastic, Association alive and well. This starts with large turn-outs at events like the clean-up (last one over a hundred folks, wow) and voting in the elections. When you don’t show up you allow small groups to dictate how your Association runs. Since being elected I have tried to introduce myself to as many members as I could. I have stopped by the different ranges to ask how we are doing and what could be done better. I appreciate the feedback and use this information in my board discussions. I feel most of our members are pleased with the way the Association is run. The best way to know is to see how people vote. But, I will be the first to say if you are not happy, vote the bums out, including me. Here is my request. I would like to see a record turnout at this election. Be that person who cares enough to show up and vote. Will it be crowded? I hope so. Will it take longer than normal? Probably. Will you see someone and say I didn’t know you were a member? Yes. I don’t ask for much (ok, I do), so please come out and vote on May 9th, just don’t forget your membership card. You will need it to vote. I Multiple Work PartiesOur last work party (3/31/2019) was a great success. It was postponed from the original date due to road closures from the rain in February. Because of the date change, we were concerned that we would have

low attendance. We had nothing to worry about. We had 107 people show up and pitch in on the numerous projects that needed to be done. Their names are listed on page 12 of this newsletter.

Our next work party is going to be on 5/18/2019. Besides cleaning the Trap Ranges we will have a lot of tasks that need to be done for two big reasons:

The Annual Barbecue – The day after the work party we will have our annual barbecue. A lot of effort goes into getting ready for this fantastic event. We need to get the grounds and facilities ready for a few hundred members and guests so that we can concentrate on the fun and food rather than more tasks that need to be done the next day.

Fire Prevention – This year we have had an unusually wet winter so the weeds and grass are growing thicker and faster than other years. By clearing brush and cutting down the weeds, we will reduce the fuel for brushfires.

Come join us for a day of service, fellowship, exercise, and great food. I have not missed a work party since I first started going to them in 2012. I still have a great time at every one of them.

I Make Time to Attend a General MeetingBring a friend to the next General Meeting and one or both of you could win a few bucks. At the last General Meeting, Joyce Alessio won the $25 door prize. Had he attended the meeting, Joe Villanueva would have won the $500 Attendance Prize. The next General Meeting is 5/9/2019. If you don’t show up, you can’t win.

I Be a Raffle DonorYour donations help support our monthly General Meeting Raffle. Our entertainment Chairman is Bud Smith. If you have items that you would like to donate to our monthly General meeting raffle, please contact Smoldering Bud at [email protected] Please consider new or used items in working order. Thanks for your support.

I Left the RangeEmmett Stump passed away recently. He became a member in 2001. Please remember him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

I EF&GA Barbecue (5/19/2019)The association Barbecue will take place on May 19, 2019. Regular prices: Adult $25.00, Children 12 years of age and under are $10.00. Advance tickets can be purchased through BOD members or the Association Clerk. There is also a mail order coupon in this newsletter as well. Tickets can also be purchased at the event. Besides the awesome food, there are many events and contests as well as the usual raffles. If you want to do all the events be there at 8 am. This year there will be a special drawing for a Mauser 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action rifle. Tickets will be $10.00 each and limited to 150 tickets. Be there or be square!

I Combat Match (1st Saturday)One of my favorite events at EF&GA is the Combat Match. Every month I have a great time, hang out with great people, and learn how to sharpen my pistol skills some more. Brian Lamb does a fantastic job of running a safe and smooth match that is always challenging and fun. If you participate in it you know what I mean. The competition is very friendly, the event goes quickly, and you learn good habits for shooting effectively and safely. If you want to learn more about it or if you want to try it yourself, here is some advice that could help you along: - Read the details about the event on the web site. https://www.escondidofishandgame.com/events/combat-match/ - Arrive early, especially if you have a group that wants to shoot on the same squad. If a group signs up 5 minutes before the Safety Briefing they will probably be scattered across multiple squads so that all of the squads have an equal number of shooters. - If you miss the Safety Briefing, you cannot participate in the event. No exceptions. - If you help set up and tear down the equipment, you will have inside information about the event. It also makes you less of a customer and more of a participant.Last month, we had over 100 shooters at the Combat Match. We all had a great time and we were cleaned up before noon. If you want to get better at pistol and have a great time, I highly recommend the Combat Match.

Advertiser SpotlightWe have many businesses that advertise in this newsletter and I want to call attention to one in particular. North County Shooting Center (formerly North County Firearms) has been an avid supporter of EF&GA for years and I think that I need to point it out publicly. For years they have advertised on the back page of the newsletter. This has made it possible to go from 12 to 16 pages in length. The revenue from their advertisement covers the additional cost of the printing. They also sponsor our Junior Marksmanship Program with a financial contribution every year granting them a place on the Meeting Hall banner. I chose the May newsletter to call them out because of another place where they step up and help EF&GA – The Barbecue. Every year they give up their time and use their FFL to be custodians of the firearms at the Silent Auction ta-ble. This is not a minor undertaking. Every year we conduct the Silent Auction legally and safely because of their in-volvement. This is an all-day event where they have to keep legally authorized staff present all day and every year it goes off without a hitch.I intentionally patronize businesses that support EF&GA and North County Shooting Center is no exception. I was looking in my safe this morning and I have identified two pistols, four AR-15 lowers, two shotguns, and two rifles that I have purchased from them over the past few years. When I’m considering another firearm purchase, they are my first place to look. Now that they have an indoor range, you can try before you buy in many cases. Patrick Russ is always there providing service with a smile and makes us all feel welcome when we walk in the front door. They always pro-vide excellent service and I appreciate it. I know that many EG&GA members shop there as well. The next time that you are shopping there, be sure to thank Darin and Stan for their continued support of EF&GA.

It’s that time of year again. It’s getting hotter, the weeds are drying out and the snakes, bugs and spiders are coming out to play. Please watch where you step and don’t put your hands anywhere that you can’t see. I would also recommend using bug spray as this year promises to be bug and spider filled.

This year’s heavy rains have made the hillsides very green and lush. We now have several layers of growth. While it may look great now, it will soon dry up and die, turning into great tinder for a potentially devastating fire. Because of that, the need for fire and weed mitigation is higher than ever. Pete Olson, Garth Warner, Roger Fannin, and some other members have been doing an outstanding job of keeping the grass trimmed and the range looking good, but they need help. This is a huge task that is of the highest priority. At the next working party on May 18th, we will be looking for some help knocking down and taking out the dried weeds and brush.

If you want to have some fun and help some kids become better shooters, please come out to a Junior marksmanship event and volunteer to coach or help in some other way. It will be well worth your time and energy. If you’re not sure how to coach, we will teach you. Our priorities are always safety first followed by fundamentals and enjoyment.

RULES TO LIVE BY1. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded

2. Never point your firearm at anything you don’t intend to shoot

3. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire

4. Know your target and the surroundings

I Member Shout-Out By Jim McKimA big “shout out” to club member and local business owner Matt Pascoe, of Pascoe Manufacturing Inc. (PMI) in Escondido, for donating his time and materials to help me make a target tote for the National Match Course match. Matt’s sheet metal work put the finishing touches I needed on my project. Thank you, Matt!

I Camp Pendleton Diaper Dash 2019 Be Part of the Escondido Fish & Game Association “Diaper Dash.” We (Linda Linaker) are collecting disposable diapers (new and unused, please) to be donated to Camp Pendleton Marine Families. Please bring your donations to any meeting or drop them off at the Meeting Hall. We will be bringing the collected diapers to Camp Pendleton after the annual Barbecue. Let’s all help build a mountain of diapers for the military families in our community.

I Work Party Volunteers (3/31/2019)As I mentioned on Page 2, we had 107 wonderful people that contributed their time, talents, and sweat to our property and our Association. I consider it a humbling experience to see how much can be done in a few short hours when you have enough people and enough motivation to get it all done. I want to recognize them all publicly and if you know any of them, be sure to thank them for their efforts. TRAP CORNER

RSOs NeededBy Chris Cote

The Wednesday night trap is looking for a few good RSO’s. Seems that Wednesday night trap is becoming very popular with 16 yard trap, Doubles, and 5 stand running from 5 pm till 9pm when we need to shut down. The new Wednesday night popularity has brought out some new shooters and some shooters out of retirement (not calling them old.) Some shooters may need to be taught etiquette and some may just need a refresher. Since safety is a top priority on our range, an extra set of safety eyes is always welcome. If you are interested in learning about trap or helping to keep our trap range just that much safer, please contact Chris Cote at 847-224-6898. He is at Wednesday night trap most weeks and can guide you through the nuances of keeping the trap range safe.

I would like to take a moment and acknowledge all the Shoot Chairs at our club for running fun and safe shoots. They have all been trained as Range Safety Officers and

are responsible for the match safety of the competitors and guests. Thank them and their assistants for the dedication they put into planning and executing a safe match.

I do stop by the matches every so often to make sure everyone is having a good time and proper safe handling of firearms are being adhered to. I pay particular attention to the Shoot Chair to make sure they are setting a good example by having eyes, ears, safe gun handling and not parking in the fire lane…

Occasionally I am asked for my opinion on a shooting subject and this time I got an interesting question:

• What is our policy on Pregnant Women shooting at our range (casual or in competition)?

My immediate answer was; Are you crazy, don’t get in the way of a Pregnant Women with a Firearm!

I say that with no malice towards women, I had the pleasure of being part (a small part) of that phase of my wife’s journey towards child birth…

So in the search to enlighten this neanderthal brain I went to the oracle of all knowledge – Google. I did find what I was looking for and thought I would share an excellent article from Julie Golob.

“Julie Goloski Golob is an American professional sport shooter with one gold (2017 Lady Classic) and two silver medals (2005 Lady Standard and 2011 Lady Production), one bronze medal (2014 Lady Production) and seven Ladies Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championship gold medals. She also has 2 US IPSC Nationals Lady titles and 13 USPSA Handgun Nationals Lady titles, and is the only seven Division USPSA National Champion in history.”

As you can see she kinda knows how to shoot and has a shooters perspective. The article she wrote is called “Shooting While Pregnant” and can be found at this address: https://www.juliegolob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Ebook_Shooting_While_Pregnant_Resource_for_Expecting_Moms_Julie_Golob.pdf

So my revised answer is: The decision to shoot pregnant is between the shooter and her doctor as long as the shooter can safely handle her firearm(s). Also I am not getting in the way of a Pregnant Women with a Firearm…!!!

The annual BBQ is here and we will be having several shooting activities. Please remember to bring eye and ear protection for everyone (yes, that does mean your kids) in your group.

It is mandatory to wear both (eye & ear protection) ear while participating in any shooting activity. It is highly recommended to wear eye protection when you are in the shooting area regardless if you are shooting or not.

One last safety suggestion – Don’t overload your BBQ plate and have an AD (accidental drop), get a second plate!

How to place a classified ad

in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

Members Only are allowed to submit Classified advertisements. Your Membership Number must be included with any advertisement request so that we can properly vet the submission before it is published. The Membership Number will NOT appear in the advertise-ment. Your Membership Number is on your member-ship badge on the same side as your photo.

No Illegal Transactions may be advertised in this newsletter. It is now illegal to sell ammunition in California without either going through an FFL or a licensed ammunition reseller. EF&GA cannot facilitate any illegal commerce of a state regulated commodity. This is also why firearm sales should include a phrase similar to Buyer pays DROS when advertising the sale of a firearm.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

I NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading (5/25/2019)Here in California, restrictions seem to be the rule, not the exception. Ammunition is now in that category. The opportunity to learn reloading techniques that will allow you to produce your own consistent, accurate ammunition and receive NRA certified reloading instruction is available on May 25th, 2019.

The First Part is strictly academic in structure and conducted at the EF&GA meeting hall. This session

By the time you read this we should have completed our 40th Anniversary Shoot. My thanks to all of you that participated and helped make it happen. General Update: I have received a number of contacts lately from new shooters and prospective new members about our black powder program at the Escondido Fish & Game Association Range. Below is a synopsis of the firearms we compete with, and the courses that we shoot:

Black Powder SilhouetteThis monthly program entails shooting at metallic silhouette targets, at three different distances, in three relays each. Pistol/Revolver always shoot at 25yd to 75yd. Rifle: Open Class, (load from the bench and any sights), Rifle-Primitive class: (Fixed Iron Sights only and load from a pouch worn on the shooter), or Black Powder Cartridge Rifle class: (BPCR), replica or original falling block or repeating rifles using lead bullets, and brass cartridges. (Any sights allowed.)All Rifle categories shoot at metallic silhouette targets at ranges from 25yd to 150yds. This varies by month. This competition is restricted to traditional Black Powder rifles and pistols, shooting patched round lead ball. BPCR can shoot soft conical lead projectiles only. Traditional Black Powder or Black Powder substitutes only can be used for powder. Sorry, but we do not compete with modern In-line muzzle loading pistols or rifles or with jacketed bullets (or sabots). As contests go, this is pretty slow and low key. New shooters are always welcome. We WILL take the time to help new pilgrims on the range. You are STRONGLY encouraged to come out and watch a contest to see what it is all about before spending any $$$ on gear or equipment.

Muzzle Loading BullseyeThis monthly program is for traditional muzzle loading competitors. We shoot rifles, pistols, and tradeguns (smoothbores) on various courses of fire at paper targets. Shooting for precision allows the competitor to measure his/her progress on an ongoing basis. We keep our own database which allows for competition within the various classes of shooters, masters, experts, sharpshooters, and marksmen. The highlight of the year is our annual Muzzle Loader Congress held in October; this is a trophy shoot that requires pre-entry and features a wide array of awards. Please see the Shoot Chair contact information on the EF&GA website for more information about each discipline. Contest schedules are listed in the newsletters.Next Contest: Our May 26th contest will be a Super Short Range contest with targets at 25, 50, and 75 yards. This is also a Tradegun contest for those of you so inclined. Pistol will start at 8:30, rifle and tradegun will start at approximately 10:00. This is the next to last chance to enter a rifle contest and get a green ticket to win a rifle in ourBlack Diamond 6 month challenge. One ticket is earned with each month’s entry. If you are new to BP shooting, then this is the contest that you should start with. I had originally planned to hold the Top Gun Shoot on this date, but I failed to get the notifications out in last months newsletter. The Top Gun will be moved to June.June Contest: The 2018 TOP GUN contest will be held on Sunday June 23rd starting at 8:00 sharp. The Top Gun contest is open to anyone who won a Primitive or Open class rifle contest in 2018. See the list below. The regular June rifle contest will start immediately following the TOP GUN contest. I am guessing about 09:30 or a little later. Due to time constraints, we will NOT have a pistol contest in June. The regular rifle contest will be a Standard Short Range contest with targets at 50, 75, and 100 yards.Special Note: Our Black Diamond Rifle Challenge will end with the June contest. If you received a green ticket in the last 6 months, you are eligible to win a rifle. Show up and find out if it was you.

Shooters eligible for the Top Gun contest are as follows:Craig Rogers, Elwanda Hannah, Rex Nielson, Ren Everett, Elvio Marchi, Dan Hannah, Chris J. (Sorry Chris, but your handwriting is atrocious), Tom Arendell, Joe Jelinek, and Garth Warner.Master Class: The only way to advance to Master Class in Black Powder Silhouette is to shoot a perfect score during a regular contest OR win a Top Gun contest. If you want to advance, here is your chance.

Thank you

Garth Warner
