typically refers to systems where a central computer master

or PLC masters communicates to multiple remote RTUs

(Remote Terminal Units) or PLC's using RTU or PLC data

communication protocols including protocols such as Modbus,

AB-DF1, and DNP3.0. The SCADA host will perform

centralized alarm management, data trending, and operator

display and control. With a SCADA system architecture, the

host communicates to the remote sites via protocol data

communications. A SCADA architecture can easily be

expanded to handle additional remote sites and i/o points.

SCADA communications can use a range of wired

(lease line, dialup line, fiber, ADSL, cable) and wireless

media (licensed radio, spread spectrum, cellular, CDPD,

satellite) depending which is available and the most cost

effective. Frequently for remote applications, wireless

SCADA is the only feasible alternative due to availability

and cost.

Wireless SCADA systems can range from simple

Point-Multipoint systems like the 900-MB Spread Spectrum

system below using Modbus protocol:

From the cold of Siberia to the heat, salt and moisture of offshore oil platforms, Zetrons SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data) systems are proven performers in a wide variety of industries and applications. Day and night, Zetron wireless SCADA systems reliably perform such vital tasks as:

Closed loop process control Equipment monitoring Malfunction detection and correction Maintenance record logging

Modern technology has allowed the evolution of SCADA to include greater data accuracy, complex analysis, automatic intelligent control, sophisticated data manipulation, and tighter security. As communities grow, as coverage areas expand, and as operations become more complex, the need to enhance existing SCADA systems or to install new systems is inevitable.

SCADA SYSTEM

SCADA Components

A SCADA system automates and centralizes the monitoring, control, and alarming of remote equipment. Zetron Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), located at multiple sites, collect data from electronic devices, and forward the data to a central control center. The Zetron Controller, as a front-end processor, manages the flow of data between the remote RTUs and the Control Program in the central host management system. The Control Program displays and analyzes data from reporting sites, issues alarms, reports on abnormal events, and initiates corrective actions as directed by an operator or automated instructions.

SCADA Benefits

The ability of a SCADA system to not only monitor the status of equipment, but to control the remote equipment from a central location, allows more efficient and cost-effective management of remote sites. Routine adjustments to levels, power, pressure, temperature, etc. improve system performance while reducing maintenance costs. Response time to emergencies is significantly reduced.

Benefits of Zetron SCADA Systems and Components

Wireless Communications

To reduce operating expenses, minimize installation costs, and maximize efficiencies, applications with widely-dispersed sites benefit significantly from wireless connections between the control center and remote sites. Zetron SCADA is compatible with conventional and most popular trunked radio systems. RTUs can also use licenseless spread spectrum or data radios for direct connection to host systems.

Cellular, Dial-up, or Lease-line Telephone Communications

Because telephone dial-up and leased-line data transfer between the Control Program and RTUs are supported, the best type of communications option can be selected for each site.

Polling, Report-on-Alarm, or Both

RTUs can report when alarm conditions are detected, when polled by the central controller, or both.

Alarm Reporting

Operators are notified of alarm conditions. Alerts and reports ensure that malfunctions and abnormalities are corrected. Logs are archived for trend analysis and regulatory compliance.

Compatible and Flexible

Wireless SCADA components can work together as a complete Zetron system or can be integrated into systems comprised of multiple vendor components.

Wide Selection

Zetron offers a range of SCADA components based on the size and complexity of the application. Each remote site can be equipped with an RTU correctly sized and configured. The control center can have the right Controller to manage communications between the Control Program and multiple RTUs.

SCADA SystemsWireless SCADA integrates a central control computer with remote units to provide economical monitoring and control of remote sites using reliable cellular or radio connections. The remote system can open and close valves, take measurements, and turn switches on or off using standard devices. The user sets parameters for the control program to automatically direct the remote system to take appropriate action.Zetron's Remote Terminal Units and System Controller can communicate with and be controlled by other vendor's Control Programs, process control applications, and with programmable logic controllers (PLC) via the MODBUS communications protocol.Upgrade an existing SCADA system with Zetron's wireless RTUs and Controller. To meet the demand for SCADA systems that range from a small system that monitors several remote sites to a large systems that handles 200 remote sites, Zetron combined the flexibility of the Zetron RTUs with the power of National Instruments "Lookout" Control Program.Zetron Wireless SCADA SystemScalable to any Size OperationZetron can provide a SCADA system, comprised of Zetron RTUs, Controller and Lookout Control Program, that is ideal for any size system. The Lookout SCADA system can monitor over 150 sites with 10,000 input/output points.

Lookout is a powerful, Windows based Control Program manufactured by National Instruments, a leading supplier of computer-based measurement and automation products.

Lookout features user-designed control panels, graphic system diagrams, trend charts, activity reports, alarms screens, and programmable control logic in an easy-to-use format. Example Screens from Lookout

SCADA System Components for Multi-Vendor SystemZetron Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) can be integrated into SCADA systems comprised of multiple-vendor RTUs and a third-party Control Program. By integrating Zetrons wireless SCADA controller and remote units into an existing SCADA system, the coverage area of the SCADA system can be economically expanded. Remote sites, previously impossible or impractical to monitor and control from a central location can now be incorporated into a SCADA system with minimal investment.

Platform CompatibilityZetron Controllers and RTUs can communicate with and be controlled by National Instruments Lookout Control Program or by a wide-range of third-party Control Program software packages that support MODBUS. Control Programs, such as In-Touch by Wonderware, Fix by Intellusions, and Genesis by Iconics, are compatible with Zetron RTUs and Controllers.Zetron offers three levels of RTUs to allow each equipment site to be equipped with an RTU with the appropriate input/output capacity. All Zetron RTUs offer a full range of inputs and outputs, including digital inputs/outputs, analog inputs/outputs, pulse counters, and accumulators.

RTUs can store and forward data sent between the Controller and other RTUs, allowing communication with RTUs beyond the range of the central station.

All of Zetron RTUs support the MODBUS protocol which allows direct interface with data or spread spectrum radios.

Communication InterfacesInterfaces are available with Zetron SCADA products to provide the flexibility to communicate with different media. A radio interface is available for most popular conventional and trunked radio systems. All transmissions are error checked and acknowledged.

A Telephone Interface (Model 1732 only) uses the industry standard AT command set and works with standard dialup and cellular telephones.

The spread spectrum radio interface is an option that features a 1-Watt, 902-928 MHz transceiver. No license is required in most areas when a spread spectrum radio is used. Repeater configuration provides a wider coverage area.

The controller manages the transfer of data between remote RTUs and the control program via conventional or trunked radio systems in licensed and unlicensed spectrums.

A Zetron controller can transfer data to the Lookout control program or third-party control programs that support MODBUS protocol.

The number of RTUs a controller can handle is determined by the control program, capacity of the radio channel, and polling response time.
