A Message from Rabbi Krauss

Dear Parents:

All students and faculty gathered yesterdayfor a meaningful Yom Hashoahcommemoration. We were honored to be

joined by survivors, who then spoke to manyof our classes, so that they could learn abouta world that was shattered, and to pay tribute

Condolences

To Michelle, Anina and RaphaelJasper Brody on the passing of theirbeloved husband and father, DavidBrody.

To Murray and Yvette Vogel on theuntimely passing of their belovedson, Joseph (Joey) Vogel (SAR‘94).

To Lisa Javitch on the passing ofher beloved father, Lee Javitch.

a world that was shattered, and to pay tributeto those kedoshim who died because theywere Jews. We also focused on the power offree choice, which allows man to perpetratethe most unimaginable crimes, but at thesame time, when used for good, allows us toreach the greatest heights.

We spoke about the two words in this week'sParsha- וידם אהרן–"and Aaron was silent",

which best capture the feelings of the day. When Aaron experiencedthe tragic deaths of his two children, he was silent- this silence isrecognition of the fact that there are some things which we are notable to understand. I encourage you to take some time at the Shabbat table to discusswith your children what they learned yesterday. We look forward to gathering on the steps again next Thursday, tosing Hallel in celebration of Yom Haatzmaut. Please join us at theYom Hazikaron commemorations and the Yom Haatzmautcelebrations. Shabbat Shalom,Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

At 9:15 Thursday morning, grades 2 through 8 and special guests gathered on the steps to commemorateYom Hashoah. Rabbi Krauss spoke to the students about the solemnity of the day and asked for a momentof silence "L'zecher Nishmat 6 Million Kedoshim". Rabbi Krauss explained that less than two weeks ago atthe seder we said “B’chol Dor Va Dor” - in every generation we are obligated to see ourselves as havingleft Mitzrayim. This can be a lesson for the Shoah as well. We are obligated to tell the stories of the Shoah,as we are the last generation to hear the stories from the survivors themselves.

Our honored guests, Mr. Jay Sommer & Dr. Moshe Avital—both survivors, lit six yahrzeit candles in memoryof the six million. Afterwards, Dr. Avital led the “kel molei rachamim", Chloe Rosenfeld recited the poem “INever Saw Another Butterfly” and Yaira Kobrin spoke about her experiences as a participant in the SAR"Names, Not Numbers” program. Dr. Avital led the entire school in singing “Ani Maamin” followed by“Hatikva”. Click here to see the morning's program.

The students then returned to their classes where they each had special programming throughout the day.

The 3rd and 5th graders heard from Mr. Sommer about his experiences during the war, while Dr. Avital

shared his story with the 4th graders. Both Dr. Avital and Mr. Sommer have written fascinating books on theirexperiences during the Shoah. Click here for link to Dr. Avital’s books. Click here for the link to Mr.Sommer’s book.

The 6th grade participated in a special online learning program through Yad Vashem which focused on

children in the ghetto. And the 7th and 8thgraders spent time in various workshops run by their teachers,

followed by a viewing of the “Names, Not Numbers” program. The 8th graders also took turns all day readingtehillim and reciting the names of those who perished.

Every hour on the hour, the bell rang and students and staff stopped whatever they were doing while RabbiKrauss recited the names of SAR family members who died in the Shoah.

Students from all grades felt the program was interesting, interactive and meaningful. “It meant more to methis year.” said Hadas Spivack 6W, “When I was younger I didn’t really understand what was going on butnow I really do.”

It’s Greek to me

Inspired by the spirit of Ancient Greece, the 6th Grade celebrated Greek Day, adorned with jewelry, togas, and tridents. Groups of students researched and embodied important Ancient Greek characters, from theinspirational 9 muses to the great Achilles, and created original skits with modern twists to inform their peersabout their particular character. The vibrant and exciting day was finished off with an abundant feast ofolives, bourekas, grapes and much more. The 6th Grade truly brought the vibrancy of Ancient Greece tolife.

To Tell the "Tooth"

“Who lost a tooth over Pesach?” asked Morah Sarah Richter. About 15 first graders bounded up to the frontof the lunchroom. Morah Sarah proceeded to interview each student. “What number tooth is this that youhave lost?”, “Where did you lose it?”, “What were you doing when you lost it?”

At present count: 3 students lost their teeth on matzah, 2 were at their grandparent’s house, 4 were inFlorida, 2 lost them at the Seder, and 1 while brushing her teeth. The students were so proud and gaveMorah Sarah beautiful toothless smiles!

The studentsare truly enjoying the opportunity to learn new things and the program has been a great success!

Springtime at SAR

The beautiful weather has lured both students and faculty outdoors! Students in the 8th grade held advisory

Parshat Shemini - By: Hannah Siegel 8X

In this week's parsha, parshat Shemini, Aaron’s sons Nadav and Avihu are killed by Hashem. The Torahdoes not directly state the reason for their deaths, simply saying, “ And Nadab and Abihu, the sons ofAaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange firebefore the LORD, which He had not commanded them .2 And there came forth fire from before the LORD,and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. “This whole situation is very unclear, and the Mefarshim have several questions about it. Rashi brings anumber of answers to the question of, “why were they killed?” Rabbi Eliezer says that the sons were killedbecause they created a law in their teacher, Moshe Rabbenu’s presence, without consulting him first. This isconsidered to be a major offense, one which merits death.Rabbi Ishmael, in response to the same question says that their major offense was not the strange fire, butrather the state they did it in. He says that they were intoxicated when they gave the Korban, and this is whatcaused them to be killed. This principle can be seen in the following pasuk. “And God spoke to Aaronsaying”, “'Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons when you enter the Tent of Meetinglest you die.' (Leviticus 10:8-9)”I think that this story can also teach us some very important lessons that relate to this year’s theme of Arvut.Arvut means the connections we create with each other, as well as with Hashem. In our world, we are all very busy. Everyone has somewhere to be, somewhere to go, something to do. Butafter reading these pesukim and the Mefarshim, I realized that we need to make smart choices, and thinkcarefully about the decisions that we make. We should not spend our time rushing around, and cramming inas much as possible to our days without thought. Rather, we should try to connect with one another, listen toour fellow man and use our time wisely, by making smart and thoughtful decisions. As we count the Omer, Hashem urges us to become more time- efficient, to do better things with the time weare given. Counting is just one of the ways that Hashem portrays that. May we merit to learn these lessonsfrom this week’s Parsha and use our time wisely, to take advantage of every moment. Shabbat Shalom.

"A lot of Jews were killed so it's important to remember that Hashem will alwayswatch over us."

The second event is the PTC’s Race to Nowhere film screening and discussion, on Sunday,

April 29th at the Academy. This is really an amazing opportunity for parents, as this film is oneof the most “talked about” films in the country right now, with regard to educational concerns. Ithas been shown in hundreds of schools across the country, and has started a conversationamong parents and educators that is incredibly valuable. The SAR teachers have alreadyseen the film, and Rabbi Krauss wanted to give the parents an opportunity to see it as well. Dr.David Pelcovitz will be introducing the film and leading the discussion afterward; he is an

excellent speaker with a lot of experience discussing the issues raised by this film. The e-mail that was sentby the school regarding this event is below; you can click on the RSVP link to sign up; again, this event isfree of charge.
