T HE W HOLE M EGILLAH Purim starts the evening of Wednesday March 4. We all know the story – Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews was thwarted by a series of amazing events and bizarre coincidences involving Esther and Mordechai. There was no overt miracle, but many events occurred that were “hidden” miracles – and in fact Queen Esther’s name is from the Hebrew word that means “hidden.” Our evening Megillah reading starts 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday March 4 in the sanctuary with the PowerPoint animated Megillah reading. The Purim PARTY follows right after the Megillah reading. The party features great entertainment, refreshments and hamentashen, costume contest, door prize, and much more! Please pre-register at the office for the party. Admission – members and immediate family $3, non-members $5, all kids and teens $1. T HE W HOLE M ATZAH The first Seder is Friday night, April 3, 2015. The first two days of Passover are Saturday and Sunday April 4 and 5, and the last two days are Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11, 2015. We look forward to seeing you at services on those days (and any other day for that matter)! Chametz Throughout the eight days of Passover, we abstain from eating any trace of leavened product or chametz. Foods made from wheat, rye, barley, oats, and all grain products are subject to the laws of chametz. All food and drink for Passover require endorsements from a reputable agency such as “COR” or “OU” with further indication that they are kosher for Pesach, with those words or with a “P” symbol. Selling the Chametz: Remember to sell your chametz since we are not permitted to own chametz during Passover. Chametz that is sold must be stored away in closets or cabinets that are locked or taped. The sale can be arranged through the Pride of Israel, using the form in this bulletin, or through various websites. SHUL MATTERS March/April 2015 Adar/Nissan 5775 1

FROM THE RABBI

e did it. We purchased food for Pesach. It is still two months out, and we purchased some stuff for Pesach.

This is part of the Gorman modus operandi. With all of the new food that must be purchased for the holiday, for reasons of both finances and general aggravation, we start a little early. This does not present a kashrut issue at all. What do I want you to learn from this? I want you to learn that the preparation and shopping do not have to happen all at once. I want you to learn that hametz actually obeys the laws of physics. That means that it does not pounce on every piece of Pesach food as soon as it comes into the neighbourhood, let alone into your house. In keeping with the laws of physics, one must also remember that a room that, in general, does not get used for eating does not have to be checked and cleaned for Pesach. You may ignore the room and learn as well that Pesach cleaning and spring-cleaning happen to come in the same season but have no other obvious connection. You have heard me say it, and I will say it again. Don't overwork. Don't overspend. When you sit down for Seder, you should not have to feel that you have just given up a year of retirement to purchase the necessities for the holiday. You should not be physically exhausted from all of the preparation. You should be able to relax and be calm, ready to savour your evening. Rav Jen, Jesse, Gavi, Keren, and I wish all of you a hag kasher v'sameach. Rav Sean Gorman

MESSAGE FROM THE

SYNAGOGUE CHAIR

am writing this message to you over the Family Day weekend, and I find myself drawn towards sharing a message with you of a

personal nature. I feel fortunate to be able to say that I am surrounded by the love of my family and friends and I have wonderful memories to cherish of those loved ones who are no longer with me. It is in this too busy world that we live in that often our work and obligations get in the way of life and we forget to take a moment to appreciate those around us. We also forget to take the time to take care of our own well-being and ourselves. Being fortunate to be able to remove myself away from the workweek demands and spend time in a different environment gives me the chance to change the pace of my workweek and the way that I process all that I am responsible for. I am able to relax and reflect, to take the time to appreciate all those who surround me and to take care of my mental and physical health. My wife actually takes some role in terms of the meals she prepares, as they seem to be directly related to my physical health! When I hear about the all too frequent losses that our congregation is experiencing and I make Shiva calls to dear friends to support them in their time of grief and mourning, I think about all that I have for which I am grateful and appreciative. Each time I have another funeral to make arrangements for, I think about my family and friends and say a silent word of thanks and appreciation for having them in my life. When dear friends are suddenly faced with unexpected health related issues, my heart and prayers go out to them that they should become well and find themselves in good health again. In all of this reflection about my life, my message to each of you is as follows. Look at your own lives. Look to those who rely on you for your support and for your presence in their lives. Look at your well-being and your mental and physical health. Take care of yourselves and those around you. Life is precious and all can change in a heartbeat. This is something of which all of us are

W

all too aware. Here today and changed tomorrow is how our lives can be affected and we must hold tight to all that we love and cherish, including ourselves. When I think of family, it is not just my immediate or extended family I think of. I have another family, my Pride family. The times that I spend here with each of you are also times that have come to bring me warmth and happiness, special moments, and wonderful memories. It is this family that needs to be taken care of as well. We need to support each other through our joys and sorrows, our celebrations, and our losses. Our daily minyan, our Shabbat services, our classes and our special events are all happenings that need you, our family, to participate in and be involved with. The annual reading of the Megillah and the celebrations that are related to this are an opportunity for each of you to reach out to your immediate families and your Pride family, to share together and make memories to hold on to. Be a part of what we have to offer and spend time enjoying the family that the Pride has right here for you. With the festival of Passover coming soon, it is my hope that you will find yourselves surrounded by your families, loved ones, and dear friends, reading from the Hagadah, chanting songs, reliving the stories from the past and eating far too much delicious food. Passover is a wonderful holiday that brings to mind images of Jewish homes throughout the world filled with light and love, laughter, and food. I hope that your home too will be full of moments that will become wonderful memories for all those present. In my home, we have a tradition of searching for the Afikkomen that has taken on a life of its own. Family members import friends from other Seders to partake in our ritual of the now famous search! When I experience this, a feeling of joy and happiness overtakes me as I am filled with gratitude and appreciation that such wonderful and amazing people surround my home and my life. My wish for each of you is that you will take the time to think about your immediate families, yourselves, and your Pride family. Be strong of heart, kind of spirit, and good to yourselves and

others. Be healthy, be well and be a positive influence in the lives of those around you. Michele and I wish each of you a heartfelt Chag Sameach. Steven Bloom

L’CHAIM – TO L I FE

f someone were to define my role as Security Chairman, they might simply think that I am responsible for the safety and the securing of

the building. They would not realize that I too strive to ensure we have the tools available so that our congregant’s health and well being, while in our building, are met. Whether it is for Shabbat services, a simcha, daily minyan prayers or one of classes, emergency situations may arise where congregants may require medical attention. It is in terms of this health and well being that I am launching a L’Chaim campaign to raise funds to purchase a portable defibrillator machine for our Shul. We currently have 2 oxygen tanks, donated to us by our members, as well as a simple first aid kit with an outdated blood pressure monitor. We need to do better. We need to have access to the proper equipment to safeguard the health of our congregants while they are in our house. I am asking for donations to cover the cost of a portable defibrillator machine. I am currently investigating purchasing this machine through Mikey network, an organization that has made it their mission to make these available to a variety of locations across the city. In addition, I would also like to update our blood pressure monitor and our first aid kit. The cost of all of the equipment is approximately $2,500.00 and training is provided for the proper use of these. To make a donation towards the L’Chaim campaign, please contact Susan in the office or myself. Tax receipts will be issued for all contributions.

t was a wonderful day on February 7 at shul. The building was buzzing with a bar mitzvah. We had our first Family Shabbat Program.

And, we celebrated Tu B’Shvat with special foods at Kiddush following services. This is what we’re all about; we can be something for everyone. I’m thrilled to say we had six new, unaffiliated families attend the Family Shabbat Program which is open to all ages. We had three bar mitzvah families - parents, grandparents, sisters, and little ones as young as just over a year old. The bar mitzvah families had their first taste of the activity at the bima and the toddlers and their parents played and relaxed in the Brotherhood Room. It was wonderful to hear one of the parents say “I wish I had something like the Family Shabbat Program when I was growing up.” This is how we show value to members and prospective members. To all you long time members out there, I say bring your children and grandchildren to the Family Shabbat Program. Let them see that there are programs here for them where they can meet other young Jewish families and carry on their traditions at the same time. It gave me a lot of hope for the future of this congregation. When young families bring their friends, their sisters, and parents, they want to hold on to that feeling, nurture it and see it grow. If they bring two friends and they bring two friends, it will be standing room only at High Holy Days!! I want to give special thanks to the following: Bob Bloom for leading this important

program Aaron Bloom for taking on gabai duties and

more Rav Sean for finding the time to come down

Rav Jen for sharing Jessie Gorman for chanting Torah Alan Marks for arranging catering, and Al Perlmutar and Central Printing for printing

A SHABBAT TO

REMEMBER

e were all greatly moved by the recent observance of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Much of

the western media meaningfully covered the return of hundreds of survivors, their children, and the diplomats of many western democracies to this place of utmost horror and human degradation, where over 1.5 million Jews, Gypsies, gays, and dissidents perished, and others suffered so greatly yet somehow survived. When we realize that Auschwitz was only one cog in the Nazi death machine that would result in the murder of 6 million Jews, we as a people seek to find some meaning in that madness and a way to properly remember and memorialize the death and suffering of so many of our people. Although the Second World War ended in 1945, it is only recently through natural growth that Jews have regained their world population numbers that existed prior to that war. And it is encouraging that many western democracies have constructed Holocaust museums and have instituted Holocaust studies in their school systems to not only educate but also to hope that such atrocities will never be repeated. In the West, Holocaust deniers are shunned and exposed for their anti-Semitic views. A body of evidence based on the sworn testimony of eye-witness survivors, liberators, and perpetrators, along with pictures and supportive documentation, made necessary in a variety of court cases pertaining to the deportation and trial of Nazis and their collaborators, and of racists and their criminal rantings and writings, have formed legal precedents in our case law that should establish the Holocaust as a legal fact for the future. Yet there are places now in Europe where Jews do not feel safe and secure. The recent events of Paris are still etched in our minds. A non-Jewish journalist recently decided to wear a kippa and a Star of David necklace and walk the streets of his large Swedish city to gage the reaction; he was cursed and threatened.

An English paper decided, in anticipation of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, to actually ask as its question of the day whether it was even necessary to still recall the holocaust. And then there is the rest of the world. In the Middle East, hundreds of millions of people believe the Holocaust did not exist or has been exaggerated for political gain. Vile and disturbing cartoons and caricatures of Jews are routinely depicted in Middle Eastern papers eerily similar to those displayed in the beginnings of Nazi Germany. So what are we Jews to do? We are to stand tall in memory and in defiance, and by our actions give true meaning to the words “Never Again.” In Israel, on the 27th day of Nissan, air raid sirens will go off throughout the country and Israelis will stop what they are doing and stand in silence in holocaust remembrance. If they are walking on the sidewalk of their cities they will stop and stand. If they are driving their cars on highways they will stop their cars, exit their vehicles, and stand in silence. After consultation with our rabbi, we propose to establish a Shabbat morning to remember. Our members and congregants who are survivors or the children of survivors are invited to come to service and be given an aliya on the Shabbat morning of May 2, 2015. We will have both speaking and non-speaking honours. If you are a survivor or child of one, please contact the synagogue office and provide your name and telephone number and either ask for an aliya to be called to the Torah or for a non-speaking aliya and please have your family members come out to support you. For a torah honour for a male, we also ask that you provide information as to whether you are Cohen, Levi, or Yisroel. Even if you do not qualify, please make it a special point to attend. Let us stand tall together. Carl Zeliger
