    HOW CHURCHES GROW IN BRAZIL

Uriel Silva served in the Brazilian Air Force during many years onthe Northeastern bulge ofBrazil near Natal, thecapital city of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Taking his retirement,he moved to Brasilia, the Federal Capital, to seek opportunity for his family. He and hisfamily had been affiliated with an evangelical Christian Church but found his way to thecentral Christian Church in Brasilia. He received a welcome and was soon affiliated havingalready been immersed. Hebegan to study special courses in the Christian College Extensioncourses with David Sanders; to participate in visitation evangelism and to take part on theevangelism committeedistributingtracts, making visits, writing letters and evangelizing. Now retired, he wanted togivehislifeto preaching the gospel.

Then came the necessity to return to his home area in Northeast Brazil. Tliere, he sought aChurch of Christ as he knew it in Brasilia but was unsucessful. Therefore he began to havemeetings in his home and other homes until the attendance was such that he felt inclined toseek a building he could useforthe growing number of attenders. Thishe did. Then, as therebegan tobe converts, he felt he needed help to baptize and telephoned David and asked forhelp. David advised the elders of the local church and it was decided that one of them wouldgoto Natal, some 1500 miles away, to help baptize and set the church in order.

Aboutthis time the first of November Ruth Sanders wanted to visit the Sanders daughterStarla Joy, in Recife, Pernambucoon Ruth s birthday (the 15th of November, which is theBrazilian holiday of the Proclamation of the Republic}. Trying to make passagearrangements for her and at the same time for the elder-evangelist to go to Natal, it wasfound thatthe elderly could get 45 discount on the airline (TRANSBRASIL)and Daviddecided to accompany herto Recife and they would also visit the new work in Natal sincethey had to go through Natal on the way to Recife. So they offered their services to thechurch and accompanied Manoel Marinho, fellow elder and evangelist-preacher of thecentral church in Brasilia

    L. David & Ruth were in Recifefor eight days. They had gonetoNatal (northwest of Recife, on the coast) with another minister fromBraziUa to inauguratea new church and baptize 11 new converts. Sinceit was buta 40 minute trip down to Recife on the way to Brasilia, theystopped over and had a good visit, walking along the beach every

morning early L Davidand Luiz Carlos went into the ocean andfoughtthe high waves). They visited the Associationfor Street Children whereStarla and herfamily ministerand the young Recife church. L. Davidgave the evening message. This wonderful trip took away some of thetrauma of the Sanders earlier trip in July to Quito, Equadorwhere theywere too sickfrom the high altitude to attend the Missionary Conferencethey wentfor.
