Summer Mission Appeal
Our Summer Mission Appeal this year will be held this weekend for the Mission Diocese of Parassala in Kerala, India. Their greatest need is to pay for the education of seminarians and vocations to the religious life. The diocese has 103 parishes and missions but only 27 diocesan priests. Fr. Abraham Lukose will be here to tell us about his work and to take up a second collection for their needs. Please read the letter from Parassala Bishop Thomas Mar Eusebius on page six.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the first reading, the Spirit of the Lord sends the prophet Ezekiel to prophesy to the Israelites. The Lord reveals to Ezekiel the difficulty he will encounter in carrying out this task. Ezekiel is being sent to a rebellious people who are hard of heart and do not listen to the word of God. But ultimately, whether they listen or not, the Lord says that they shall know that a prophet has been among them. St. Paul, in his second Letter to the Corinthians, speaks of a “thorn in his flesh” from Satan. God has allowed this in order that Paul may be humbled and that he might not take too much pride in his call to be an apostle. When Paul begs God to release him from this thorn, the Lord instructs Paul to rely on God’s grace alone; for even in Paul’s weakness God will reveal his power. In Mark’s gospel, Jesus returns to his home town, only to be frustrated by the people’s lack of faith. Although they know that he has performed mighty deeds, they took offense at him and would not accept his message. Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith.
Ezekiel 2: 2-5 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 Mark 6: 1-6a

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3
From the Pastor’s Desk
Our scriptures this weekend remind us that our preconceived notions and commonsense world view often blind us to the presence of God. Jesus has been traveling around the countryside, working mighty deeds of God. In the preced-ing passages from Mark’s gospel, we read the stories of the curing of the woman with the hemorrhages and Jesus raising a little girl from the dead. The word of his miracles and the wisdom of his teaching have spread throughout Galilee and Judea. In today’s gospel, Jesus returns to his hometown and teaches in the synagogue. The people are astonished at his wisdom. However, they refuse to see the truth of the power and presence of God because they cannot believe that the Jesus, who grew up in their midst, could possibly be anyone special. Even worse, they took offense at him.
In many ways we are often no different. We are all so conditioned by our own worldview and attitudes that we close our minds. When we hear the Word that challenges our attitudes or behavior, our default response is denial (original sin). We shoot the messenger. We immediately point to the person’s imperfections as a way to deny the message. This is particularly true in the Church today. Many people point out the imperfections of the messengers as a way of deciding that they can make moral decisions and value choices independently of the Word of God. To do so places us in grave spiritual peril. In the 23rd chapter of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus reminds the people to do everything that the Scribes and the Pharisees teach because they sit on the chair of Moses. In the fifth chapter, he tells us that not the smallest part of the law will pass away. In today’s gospel, he is amazed at his people’s lack of faith, and so is unable to manifest the power of God to them.
In our first reading, God tells Ezekiel that the people are obstinate of heart, a rebellious house. At least they will know that a prophet has been among them. They recognize the Word of God. The Lord gives them the choice to heed that word or resist it. We, too, have that choice. But first we have to listen and acknowledge God’s truth. Let us pray that God will not have reason to be amazed at our own lack of faith.
Summer Construction Season is underway. Capital repairs to the school include grinding and tuck pointing on the brickwork of the junior building ($30,000), flashpoint replacement around the roofs ($2,000), and replacement of the twenty year old carpets in the classrooms ($30,000). We are also planning to replace the organ and the piano in the church ($105,000 total) and to refurbish the sound system, tables and chairs in Kernaghan Hall ($25,000). The junior building brick work expenses will be paid out of our capital fund savings. The remainder of the expenses are included in the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign. Since we only have $90,000 in the TTWCI savings account, the remainder will be “borrowed” from our capital repair fund and repaid from future pledge payments to the campaign.
The Learning Garden, dedicated to the Sisters of Notre Dame, should be completed by the end of the summer. To-tal cost of the Garden is estimated at $34,000. The fencing work ($6,000) has already been paid. We have received $19,000 in donations to date. We expect the remaining funds to be raised through our Adopt-a-Project (see the dis-play in the church vestibule of the church).
The Sisters of Notre Dame are planning to move back to the Mother House in Cincinnati at the end of August. While they plan to be back to visit regularly, especially for important parish events, the move will be a permanent one. This will be a sad day for our parish and the end of an era that goes back practically to the founding of our par-ish. They will be deeply missed. We are planning a farewell Mass at noon on Sunday, August 19th, followed by a chance to say farewell and share stories with them at a reception in the Hall. At 2:00 p.m. (time yet to be finalized) we will move over to the new Learning Garden for a special dedication ceremony in their honor.
Though the Church has returned to Ordinary Time, school is out for the summer, and the organizations are on hiatus until the fall, you can see that there is a lot going on to improve our parish facilities. Our collections generally drop dramatically during the summer. We need your continued cooperation and support to remain vibrant and vital. If you are not already giving regularly to the parish, I ask you to please begin to do so.
Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The total of the diocese is million of which 40,000 are Catholics. The majority of the people

whole of South India - economically, socially and educationally. The main source of income for most
people is the daily labor which is not regularly and easily available. Though the children and youth in
this region are intellectually gifted, they lack for primary and higher education.
The diocese of Parassala is purely a mission diocese, in the sense that all the faithful of the em-

work of evangelization by many committed priests, sisters and lay The region is very fertile for
