Mary and the Month of May

In the month of May we honor the Blessed Mother and in a special way make extra me and prayer for our devo onal life. These devo ons remind us of Mary’s "yes" to God that made possible the birth of Christ in our human nature. The motherhood of Mary confirms the full humanity of Christ in the Incarna on, sanc fying our human family. Pope Paul VI puts forth a beau ful understanding of our teachings about Mary and her role in the lives of the faithful. He reminds us that we venerate and honor Mary for her role in salva on and for the love that she had for God. It was God’s will that she become the Mother of his only Son and that she nurture and support him throughout his earthly life. Mary con nues to intercede for all her children as our guardian.

Third Sunday of Easter

In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter and the other apostles are brought before the Sanhedrin because they have con nued to teach in the name of Jesus, even though the leaders of the Temple had forbidden them to do so. They reply that they must obey God rather than men, proclaiming Jesus to be the Messiah. They are punished and dismissed. The Apostles rejoiced that they had been found worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. In his vision of the end- me, St. John sees the mul tude gathered around the throne of God, proclaiming: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing.” The gospel story recounts one of Jesus’ post-Resurrec on appearances. The disciples have been fishing all night but haven’t caught anything. Jesus tells them to put their nets into the water and they pull in such a large catch of fish that they couldn’t haul them all. They only recognize him when they see the size of this miraculous catch. A er they have breakfast, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. He asks him three mes, and each me Peter responds that he does. And three mes Jesus tells him to feed his sheep.

Acts 5: 27-32, 40-41 Revela on 5: 11-14 John 21: 1-19

Third Sunday of Easter Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we con nue the story of the post-Resurrec on appearances of Jesus. These appearances were vital to the early Church in establishing the reality of the Resurrec on. Peter and the other disciples have gone fishing, proba-bly because they are uncertain of how to proceed with their mission. The importance of the post-resurrec on ap-pearances of Jesus becomes apparent when we hear Peter in the Acts of the Apostles boldly proclaiming the Risen Christ compared to his uncertainty in the gospel narra ve.

Peter’s proclama on before the Sanhedrin tells the Jewish leaders that Jesus was indeed the Messiah, raised up by God. The leaders do not want to be guilty of shedding Jesus’ blood because it would undermine their authority. But Peter tells them that Jesus was God’s chosen one as leader and savior, to grant repentance to Israel and for-giveness of sins. He so ens the accusa on so that they will be open to hear the message and come to see Jesus as the fulfillment of the Messianic expecta on. This is the mission given to the apostles, the Great Commission to go out and proclaim the good news. They, and we, are called to preach and teach in the name of Jesus, and to bap ze in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins.

In the gospel narra ve, the apostles have been fishing all night and not caught anything. When Jesus commands them to lower their nets in the morning, they are astounded at the large catch of fish. In this miraculous catch, the disciples recognize the Risen Lord. Jesus feeds them as he con nues to feed us. The gospel concludes with Peter’s profession of faith. A er the Last Supper, Peter denied Christ three mes. When he heard the cock crow, he wept bi erly, recognizing his sin. Jesus now redeems him through his ques oning. Peter’s triple profession of love for Christ atones for his triple denial. His conversion is complete. Jesus gives Peter the command to feed his sheep, telling him that he, too, will have to lay down his life for his people.

The conversion stories are important for us because they tell us the reality of this personal encounter with Christ that rearranges our whole way of looking at life; in fact, our whole way of being. The great liturgies we celebrated at the Triduum are designed to bring us that same sense of awe that St. John experienced in his Revela on. He sees the great mul tude in worship around God’s throne, with the Lamb at the center who shepherds them to the streams of life-giving water. The Lamb is symbolic of the blood that the Israelites put on their doorposts the night of their flight from Egypt. It is a reminder that discipleship has a cost. The vision shows us that Christ has tri-umphed over sin and death, and, having beheld the glory of God, we, too, have the power to live out our bap smal promises.

Divine Mercy is God’s gi to us that we celebrated in the most solemn way at the Easter Triduum two weeks ago, On Holy Thursday, Jesus gives us the Eucharist, the sign of God’s promise to be with us forever in this life and to restore us to union with him. On Good Friday, Jesus dies on the Cross as the sign of God’s mercy that forgives our sins. On Easter Sunday, Jesus rises from the dead, as a sign of God’s love that overcomes human sin and death with the promise of eternal life. Having spent the forty days of Lent journeying with Jesus to the Cross, confessing our sinfulness and need for God’s mercy, the joy of Easter should overwhelm us with gra tude for God’s love and mercy. The true test of our faith is how we live that gra tude in our daily lives in rela onship to one another. Pope Francis invites us to live our gra tude in concrete ways: to the poor, the lonely, the marginalized, the stranger, to those who have hurt us, to family and friends to whom we have become estranged or indifferent, to the people we encounter in the everyday ac vi es of life.

Upcoming events include Movie Night, featuring “Real Presence Creates Communion”, concluding Bishop Barron’s film series on the Mass on Tuesday, The Sports Associa on Awards Banquet on Thursday, May Crowning on Friday, and Mother’s Day next Sunday. There will be a second collec on next weekend for Catholic Chari es and our Mother’s Day Flower Sale to benefit the work of the Women’s Center.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
