ST. JOSEPH REOPENING

When we were given permission to begin reopening our churches several weeks ago, we assembled a small committee to study the procedures and physical adjustments necessary to do so and to put together a plan specifically for St. Joseph. The committee is composed of persons whose work as part of our staff or lay ministry would be impacted by the new regulations. They have provided us with a comprehensive plan that will allow us to begin to safely reopen with a limited number of attendees at mass. We are very grateful for their efforts on behalf of our parish. Therefore, I am pleased to announce that we are celebrating, with limited attendees, a daily mass on Monday to Friday mornings at 8:30 AM at St. Joseph Church. We will be offering two Sunday masses with limited attendees at 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. “Reservations” will be required for the Sunday masses. A reservation may only be obtained by calling the parish office (302-378-5800) the Monday through Thursday prior to the next Sunday mass between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM only. You may request a reservation for a single person or for a “family unit” of multiple persons living together in a common residence. Reservations are not required for week day masses. We have posted on line a short you tube video which explains the new procedures and restrictions for attending reopening masses at St. Joseph Church. We ask that you go to our website and hit the “click on” button for our live streamed masses which will bring you to our YouTube site; click on “videos”. There you will find the video titled: “Msgr. David Kelley: Reopening Procedures for Mass.” Please watch the video from beginning to end. Bishop Malooly’s suspension of the obligation to attend Sunday mass is still in effect for all persons no matter their age. We will be continuing to live stream both our daily masses and Saturday evening mass as we have been since Holy Week. The Bishop particularly would ask those over 6o years old to carefully consider whether they should be coming back to church, especially those with underlying conditions. Several regulations that anyone planning to come to St. Joseph’s for mass at this time needs to consider are:

All persons over two years must wear a mask from when they enter the church until they exit the church. All persons regardless of age must remain in their assigned seat during the mass; if a person leaves their seat during mass they will be directed to leave the building. The restrooms will be unavailable before, during, and after every mass due to difficulties meeting the sanitizing and social distancing requirements. The gathering space will be unavailable to all persons during the mass. You should arrive for mass 30 to 45 minutes before the scheduled starting time of mass.

All are expected to abide by the above regulations for the health and safety of others in attendance. As we become more accustomed to our new procedures, we hope to be able to increase the number of persons we will be able to accommodate in the church for each of the Sunday masses. We here at St. Joseph’s are looking forward to having you with us in person as you are wanting to “come home” to your church!

Take care and stay healthy, Msgr. David Kelley

June 7th $19,427.34 $11,537.00 $30,964.34

We often think of Stewardship in the form of our weekly monetary offering, which is vital to the financial viability of our parish. But it also comes in many other forms such as sharing your knowledge and wisdom on one of our many committees here at St. Joseph parish. Or it could be you are one of the individuals who share their talents as a cantor, choir member, musician, lecturer or minister, who all play a role in making the liturgy celebration a beautiful and faith-filled experience. And in some cases, Stewardship can be the simple act of sharing a smile or warm greeting with a stranger. The point is, we will never run out of something worthwhile to give. Thank you to all the members of St. Joseph parish who answer the call of being good stewards.

The Word in Our Lives Readings for June 21, 2020

12th Sunday of Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jeremiah 20:10-13 Jeremiah said: “I hear the whisperings of many: ‘Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!’ All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. ‘Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.’ But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. In their failure they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion. O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause. Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, for he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!” Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 69:8-10, 14, 17, 33-35 Second Reading: Romans 5:12-15 Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned— for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come. But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many. Gospel: Matthew 10:26-33 Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENT PREPARATION NEWS!

Registration forms for Religious Education and the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation will be available on the parish website, www.stjosephmiddletown.com on Monday, March 2nd. Religious Education registrations are accepted from registered parishioners on a first-come, first-served basis until August 31, 2020. No registrations will be accepted after August 31, 2020, except from families that are relocating to our parish, moving from their existing religious education program to our program. In order to ensure both the accuracy of our records and the safety of our students, we will be unable to process any registration that does not include all required information, payment, and/or documentation. Incomplete registrations will be returned. If your child has completed grade one, either in our Religious Education program or in Catholic school, and is enrolling in grade two, you must complete a separate form to register for the sacramental preparation program for Reconciliation and Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee. The Confirmation preparation program also has a separate registration form, schedule and fee. In conjunction with the Diocese, we also offer a Special Needs Religious Education program. Contact the Religious Education Office at 302.378.5800, ext. 107 for further information. St. Joseph Parish has one of the largest Religious Education programs in our diocese. We are always in need of volunteers and gratefully welcome those that are willing to share their time, talent and faith. We look forward to working with you and your family.

DID YOU KNOW... St. Joan of Arc is quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)? Joan was a simple uneducated shepherdess so how could this be? She was born in 1412 at a time when France and England had been at war for decades. At 13 she received a mystical experience and heard the “voice” of St. Michael the Archangel. She was inspired to lead French troops to a significant victory at Orleans. When a truce with England failed, she was captured, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake. At a later trial she was vindicated. At her first trial she was recorded to have said, “About Jesus Christ and the Church, I simply know they are one thing and we shouldn’t complicate the matter.” (CCC #795) Knowing her faith, she expressed what St. Augustine summed up in Latin, “christus totus,” the whole Christ. That was restated by St. Thomas Aquinas, the “Head and members form as it were one and the same mystical person.” So, with St. Joan, let us not complicate the matter. We are joined with Christ as one in his mystical body.
