THIS IS MY BELOVED SON This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). TODAY’S READINGS First Reading Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7). Psalm The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29). Second Reading Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:34-38). Gospel A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Matthew 3:13-17).

ESTE ES MI HIJO MUY AMADO Con la celebración del Bautismo del Señor este domingo concluye el tiempo de Navidad. En las lecturas vemos más de una epifanía o manifestación del Espíritu de Dios en Jesús, sólo que esta vez ya no como niño, sino como adulto. El Bautismo de Jesús es también la inauguración de su misión profética y de la era mesiánica. En la lectura de hoy Isaías describe al Mesías elegido por Dios sobre el cual ha puesto su Espíritu. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles Pedro dice que “Dios ungió con el poder del Espíritu Santo a Jesús de Nazaret” (Hechos 10:38). Finalmente, en las proclamación del Evangelio de Mateo el Bautismo de Jesús en el agua casi pasa desapercibido. The Altar Servers assist the priest and the deacon in helping to bring the assembly to a fuller understanding of the liturgy and a greater love for God.

We are recruiting NEW volunteers who want to become Altar Servers. Children and teens who have received First Communion and attend Mass on a regular basis are welcome to service in this beautiful ministry. Training will be provided.

The Seven Sisters Apostolate is a call to strengthen the Church by ensuring that a Holy Hour is prayed each day of the week for the sole inten on of a specific priest. We are blessed to have a group at St. Michael’s praying for our pastor, Fr. Eugene. We are now seeking another seven women who feel called to offer the prayerful sacrifice of one Holy Hour a week on the same day each week for the sole inten on of our Parochial Vicar, Fr. Javier. Preparation and celebration of Christmas was wonderful and we want to share with you a few highlights. On December 21st, children had the opportunity to meet Santa, brought a can of food for Saint Vincent de Paul, and enjoyed cookies. A few days later, on Christmas Eve, some children of our parish performed a representation of the Nativity Story, some children won gifts and were taught that they could share them with other children just like Jesus came to share. Saint Michael the Archangel also had the honor of being visited by the Magi, surprising our little ones with candy. La preparación y celebración de Navidad fue maravillosa y queremos compartir con ustedes un poco de lo sucedido. El 21 de diciembre, los niños asistentes tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer a Santa, trajeron comida para San Vicente de Paul, y disfrutaron de galletas. Unos días después, en Noche Buena, un grupo de niños de nuestra parroquia presentaron la Historia de la Navidad en donde algunos niños ganaron premios y aprendieron que podían compartir con los otros niños, tal como Jesús vino a compartir. San Miguel el Arcángel también recibió el honor de la visita de los Tres Reyes Magos, quiénes sorprendieron a nuestros pequeños con dulces.
