Shine, Shine, Shine DFW NIGP Committee Opportunities for 2017 Do you have any hidden talents that you want to unleash? Do you have an accounting background and want to add to your expertise by trying something new? Do you thrive in planning events? Have you always wanted to expand your technology horizons? If so, the DFW NIGP Chapter is the place for you. Just ask me. I started volunteering in DFW NIGP early last year and I have found that the new experiences are so beneficial to me and add to my Purchasing Professional Development. I had never in my professional life participated in a Strategic Planning Meeting, but so far the experience has been interesting. DFW NIGP folks have had to lead and teach me the many facets of planning for the future. And you know what? They are willing to help us learn more. Also, I have met some very intelligent people, each one shining in their own talents and knowledge. It is so good to see so many new faces in the DFW NIGP Chapter lately. We are looking for members who would like to volunteer their time as Committee Chairs and shine, Shine, SHINE! If interested, please contact me at: [email protected] or 972-758-3876. Regards, Karen Bell, DFW NIGP Secretary More information regarding committee positions is available in the Chapter Bylaws. Chapter Standings as of Nov. 7, 2016.

Scott Arledge, CPPO, CPPB, is DFW Chapter’s 1st Vice President and the 2017 President-elect and has been in public procurement for 29 years. He has worked for Denton County for 14 years and is the Assistant Director of Purchasing. Scott says that the most important thing to know about public procurement is that “you have to have ethical standards and never let anyone influence your ethics.” To new purchasers, he tells them to learn the basics and continually build expand their knowledge. Sound advice from one who knows. All of us should take this to heart.

I asked Scott what his favorite book or movie is. Here is what he says. “Remember the Titans. In this movie, there were many challenges and obstacles for [the] coaches and football players and they took the challenges and obstacles head on and succeeded.” I must admit, it is one of my favorites as well. Scott enjoys working on his land and finds music to be the best way to relax. Which makes sense since his bucket list includes a trip to Nashville and Memphis for several weeks and to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Happy Holidays! It has been an amazing year and this season brings us so much to be grateful for.

It has been an exciting year and I want to express my appreciation to all of our Chapter members, especially the Board Members and the Committee Chairs for their dedication and resourcefulness throughout the year.

Our Professional Development Day was held in Garland at the beautiful Fire Admin Building. Great facility to hear a wonderful program presented by veteran procurement professionals Carol Cooper and Narita Holmes. We had a great turn out for this event and I can’t wait so see next year’s program. Thank you, Janice Hughes for organizing another successful event.

In July 2017, we launched our newly designed DFW Metroplex logo. I love the design and we have received a lot of positive feedback on the new look.

In April 2017, we gave our little newsletter a new name and DFW Pulse on Purchasing was launched. Thank you everyone who participated in the “Name our Newsletter” contest and to Debra Carrejo for submitting the new name.

Heather Carmichael has been creating our 2016 newsletters and has done an awesome job!! Thank you, Heather for taking on this task and doing such a great job. I know it was hard to fill the pages for 12 months, so next year we will be cutting back on the publication of DFW Pulse on Purchasing to 4 times a year. The newsletter will be sent out at the end of the month before the next scheduled Business meeting (May, June, Sept. and Dec. of 2017).

We launched the new website early in the 2016 and I think it has already made a huge difference in our communication with our membership and I hope all you have found it easy to use and will take advantage of the newest feature, [email protected]. DFW Metroplex Chapter’s list serve has been added to help our membership share knowledge and look for advice or opinions from our colleagues in the procurement profession. We hope you will find this a valuable tool.

Thank you for being a member and please be sure to renew your membership through our website at Membership. Our membership as of December 2017 is at 120 members, up from last year’s count of 100 members, so I challenge each of you to seek out a purchasing peer and ask them to join us. Let’s keep growing. Hope to see all of you at the January 2017 Quarterly meeting for the swearing in of the new officers.
