FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 29, 2017JANUARY 29, 2017JANUARY 29, 2017

Today’s Gospel Reflection

First Reading: Zep 2:3; 3:12-13 * Psalm: Ps 146:6-10 * Second Reading: 1 Cor 1:26-31 * Mt 5:1-12a

THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testa-ment prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3

Dear Parishioners and friends, National Catholic Schools Week. Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic Education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is January 29 to February 4. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Catholic schools participate in the evangelizing mission of the Church, integrating religious education as the core subject within our curriculum. Religious Education integrated with Academic Excellence as core vision is vital element of the curriculum where individuals are to develop themselves: “intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally, and of course, spiritually.” The education also involves: “the distinct but complementary aspect of the school’s religious dimension of liturgical and prayer life of the school community.” In Catholic schools, teachers teach a Religious Education Program provided by the Bishop. Both teacher and Bishop through the parish, therefore, contribute to the planning and teaching Religious Education Lessons. Catholic schools are very distinctive from the public school counterparts in that they aim to focus on the development of the child as practitioner of the Catholic faith. The leaders, teachers and students are required to focus on four fundamental rules initiated by the Church and school. This includes the (1) Catholic identity of the school, (2) education in regards to life and faith, (3) celebration of life and faith, and (4) action and social justice. These are the characteristics of Catholic Schools. Please visit the National Catholic Educational Association for more information at http://www.ncea.org/.

Our own philosophy at St. Michael Academy is based on the belief that each child is a cherished gift from God. Our school provides positive learning experience through a success-oriented, student centered supportive approach. St. Michael Academy has a high graduation rate (99%), strong preparation for further education, and a well disciplined environment. On top of these, we also have exceptional faculty who help students reach their potential. Catholic Education is a very good investment for you and for your child. The world today, where we live, needs to be supplemented with an education that would provide to make your child morally strong to face the challenges of time...and you find it here in our own backyard—our very own St. Michael Academy. Give your child a gift of a life time—Catholic Education!

Religious Education

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Until very recent decades “Holy Thursday” and “Good Friday” were centered on personal pious devotions, not public liturgy. In urban America, at least in cities with a significant Catholic population, Holy Thursday was about veneration of the Blessed Sacrament. People were encouraged to walk to seven churches for a “visit” to each parish’s repository, a kind of tempo-rary tabernacle on a side altar, closer in proximity to the faithful than the usual tabernacle on the distant high altar. On Good Friday, the most popular form of devotion was the Stations of the Cross, or a three-hour program of word and preaching beginning at noon. The Holy Thursday seven-church hike was a way of partici-pating in a custom of the city of Rome. Traditionally, each day in Lent was assigned to a particular parish church or basilica in the city. Each week of Lent thus had seven churches, and pious people tried to get to each one of them. The pilgrimage was a symbol of unity and also the journey of faith. Originally, the pope would go to each place for a liturgy, but political strife removed the pope from Rome in 1305. With the papacy relocated in France, the custom ceased until Pope Leo XIII expressed interest in restoring it in 1900, and Saint John XXIII fully restored the custom in 1959. By the time Pope Leo began to revive the custom, many American cities had enough parishes and monas-teries that the faithful could vicariously participate in the revived tradition of stational liturgies by a very long walk! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Which one is the most challenging for you? - International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews

A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER for JANUARY

Good and gracious God, a new year of grace is upon us, giving us impressions of crisp beginnings

new goals, a fresh sense of hope. Though we cling to our own expectations for the year ahead,

we know You alone are the sovereign of our future, Lord of our lives, and the source of whatever good we may do.

We thank You, O Lord, for the gift of the days and weeks You have entrusted to us.

Teach us to be good stewards of our time ahead, that we go about our days keeping You at the center of our lives.

In the midst of our daily pursuits and activities, focus our eyes on the needs of others;

help us respond with compassion to the poor; and open our hearts to a suffering world.

We ask for a year of peace, a year that brings an end to hatred and strife, and a year where we find a deeper joy

that can only be found in You. We ask this through Christ Your Son who lives and reigns with

you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S WIDOWS — A Support Group for Widows. We meet every 2nd Saturday of the Month, at 9:00 a.m. in the Collier Center. Call 619-470-1977 for more information.

FEAST OF STO. NINO. In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippine Island and presented an image of the child Jesus to Queen Juana of Cebu . She danced with joy holding the image and the other natives followed her imitating her dancing. The native's name for the dance is sinulog. That was the beginning of the yearly celebration of the Feast of Santo Nino every third Sunday of January. Shown are members of the Magellan Assembly Color Guard who led the procession for a reception at the Parish Hall after the mass concelebrated by several priests.

BE REMEMBERED FOREVER and included in our Mass inten-tions. Have the names of your beloved departed inscribed on a brick in our Memorial Garden Walls. The names on the memorial walls will forever

become part of the Garden. Call the parish office at 619-470-1977. Also ask about the PERPETUAL MEMORIAL WALLS (for the living and deceased) inside the church in the vestibule. Names on these walls are included in our Mass intentions every First Friday of the month.

—Gilbert K. Chesterton

MARRIAGE NEWS. If you are planning a wedding please e-mail Barbara Patton at [email protected]. The church asks for a 9-month preparation time. Do not contract with a venue before setting a date for the church. The first step is making an

appointment with Barbara. We are eager to help you plan this very important time in your life. If you or someone you know has been married civilly and would like to have their marriage blessed, we can help you. If you have a previous marriage, we can help you. Many times, for many reasons, couples will marry in a civil court, chapel or church other than a Catholic Church by a Catholic priest. Since marriage is a sacrament, the church does not recognize such civil weddings and therefore the couple may not receive any other sacraments. The church however wants to help couples to be able to fully participate in the sacraments and to be able to receive the graces which accompany the sacra-ments. We are happy to help you with any questions regarding marriage in the Catholic Church. Please e-mail Barbara Patton. [email protected] for an appointment or call the office and leave your name and number and a time that is most convenient to call you back.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our

protection against the wickedness and the snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God - cast

into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we ask for Your divine guidance as we prayerfully move toward

the realization of our new parish center. Show us the way to meet the needs of our growing parish community. Lead us to committing ourselves with a spirit of true sac-rifice. For it is always by sacrifice that we show our love of You and our neighbor.

Lead us to wisely use our time, talents and treasures as we move forward with Your holy vision. Inspire us all out of Your generous love, to be equally generous for strengthening Your Church and our parish.

Spirit of God, we praise You and adore You. We pray that Your Spirit will empower us to work strongly for the realization of our dream so that future generations will harvest the fruits of our commitments and sacrifice.

This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mary Mother of God, pray for us. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us.

St. Joseph the Builder, pray for us.

generosos y construir Tu iglesia y nuestra parroquia.

Amen.

Maria Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros. San Miguel, Arcangel, ruega por nosotros. San Jose Constructor, ruega por nosotros.
