This weekend is the annual collection for the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools. By now you should have received a letter from the Bishop about the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools campaign and an envelope outlining the various giving options. You may use that envelope to send in a contribution at any time, even after this weekend, or give online at archdioceseofanchorage.org/donate. TO PROTECT HUMAN LIFE—IN 28 POWERFUL WORDS Jim Minnery/Alaska Family Counsel/1/22/2020 (HTTPS://www.akfamily.org) …Senator Shelley Hughes…, [of] Palmer introduced Senate Joint Resolution 13 – a measure that would allow Alaska voters to consider adding just 28 words to our constitution:“To protect human life, nothing in this constitution may be construed to secure or protect a right to an abortion or require the State to fund an abortion.”SJR 13 would reverse the Alaska Supreme Court’s radical policy, first declared in the 1997 Valley Hospital decision, that proclaimed a right to abortion exists in the state constitution. There is no such right of course – the word “abortion” is found nowhere in Alaska’s constitution. In fact, when our state constitution was drafted in the 1950s, abortion was illegal throughout the United States, including the Alaska Territory. Abortion continued to be illegal in Alaska after the constitution was adopted, and it remained so until the Legislature legalized abortion in 1970.Tragically, the court-invented “right to abortion” has been used by the state Supreme Court as a battering ram to knock down common-sense regulations on abortion that are widespread throughout the rest of the nation [such as parental involvement in a minor’s abortion and Medicaid funds for elective abortions].Senator Hughes’ resolution by itself doesn’t propose a new abortion policy for Alaska. Instead, SJR 13 makes it abundantly clear who gets to set that policy: democratically elected representatives, or the voters acting directly through the initiative process. Unelected judges [would] no longer get to wield absolute power for deciding what public policy will be on protecting life.

Voter Registration after all masses: The next Municipal election is Tuesday, April 7th. If you are not registered (in order to vote you must be registered by March 6th) or need to update your information, we will have a table in the Miki Center hallway to assist you.

Days for Girls Workshop was a real success with old friends and new attending. Along with a slide show from mission trips to deliver the kits, we saw a short video from the Days for Girls website (www.daysforgirls.org/) that stated beautifully the impact these kits made. We’ve loaded Sturday’s photos onto our Peace and Justice Facebook page.

February is National Children's Dental Health MonthThis year's NCDHM campaign slogan is "Fluoride in water prevents cavities! Get it from the tap!". Treating cavities is important, but preventing cavities is best. That’s where fluoride comes in. Millions of children in the United States and around the world have been spared thanks to fluoride in tap water, toothpaste and routine dental checkups starting no later than a child’s first birthday. Why is fluoride important?Did you know dental cavities are the most common disease in children and adults worldwide? Fluoride is one of the best and safest ways we can prevent cavities for children and adults alike.

Here’s how fluoride works. Your mouth contains bacteria that feed on the sugars in the foods we eat and the beverages we drink. This produces acid that can wear away the hard, outer shell of your tooth (enamel). This can lead to cavities. Fluoride protects teeth by making the your teeth stronger and more resistant to acid. It not only reduces the risk of cavities, it can even help reverse early signs of decay. Due to its success in preventing cavities, fluoride in water was named a top public health achievement in the 20th century. For more information: https://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/babies-and-kids/moms-guide-to-fluoride
