FROM DESK OF DEACON DAVE

Once a week I like to treat myself to a big breakfast which consists of three eggs, bacon/ Italian sausage, hash browns and toast. I have always had to use two cast iron frying pans to accommodate this large amount of food. I finally went shopping and found one huge pan that barely fits on the stove. To make sure the food would cook properly, the gigantic pan had to be perfectly centered on the burner. Sometimes bigger is better. I’m telling you this tale so I can give you some food for thought. It is important for us to remember the bigger picture. The church wants our faith to be big, strong, and robust. It wants us to remember that God is powerful and magnificent, and that He does wonderful things in, through, and for those people who really trust Him. There is an anecdote that illustrates the importance of remembering the big picture that our faith paints for us. Two men went fishing and one man was an experienced fisherman; the other wasn’t. Every time the experienced fisherman caught a big fish, he put it in his ice chest to keep it fresh. Whenever the inexperienced fisherman caught a big fish, he threw it back. The experi-enced fisherman watched this go on all day and finally got tired of seeing this man waste good fish. “Why do you keep throwing back all the big fish you catch?” he asked. The inexperienced fisherman replied, “I only have a small frying pan.” Sometimes, like that fisherman, we throw back the big plans, big dreams, big ideas, and big opportunities that God sends us, because our faith is too small. We laugh at that fisherman who didn’t figure out that all he needed was a bigger frying pan; yet how ready are we to increase the size of our faith? Even though my huge frying pan cooked my breakfast adequately, I recently bought a larger fancier stove which contains a big griddle in

the center. Bigger really can be better at least in my case!

Blessings, Deacon Dave

On June 26th it was a year since I came to St. Martin De Porres. It has been a fantastic year for me personally and as a priest. So I don’t feel like it is that long because truly this has been a year of great blessing in my life. To count all the blessings, I need a lot of time, so I raise my heart in thanksgiving to God for all the good experiences I had here. The best experience I had was meeting the great people of St. Martins who are so dedicated and faith filled. The daily mass attendance, as well as on weekends, is so encouraging (though weekends could be still better). People come truly to pray and that is so uplifting. All were so nice to me in welcoming and making feel at home. The enthusiasm of the people in spiritual matters and the keen interest in the progress and growth of the parish in general is amazing. How each one of you is ready to contribute your time and resources for the church is truly edifying and keeps me wanting to be here more. I thank God for the great staff we have in the office together with our two wonderful deacons who have been a great help to me during my transition and keep me in line always. Talking about the staff, there was a change in the office earlier in the year. We got a new parish secretary and she is wonderful in her work. There is yet another change in the personnel in the office. We all know Mrs. Marilyn Saunders has been our PSR principal and sacramental coordinator for many, many years. She has been phenomenal conducting the class, organizing it in a very orderly way and having programs that truly instill faith in our children and encourage them to live their faith. She has done a lot for the parish and we need to rightly acknowledge that always. Now it is time for her to enjoy her well-deserved retirement time. So she is stepping down from being the PSR coordinator but still will continue as the parish sacramental coordinator. I am glad she will be around because she is huge help in planning and making arrangements for funerals and weddings and other sacraments in the parish. At this time, I want to express my sincere thanks to her for all that she has done for the parish and will continue to do for us. And I would like welcome Mrs. Theresa Wright as our new PSR coordinator. She is not new to the parish. She has been involved in the youth group activities, leading it for some time, later stepping in as the parish secretary, and has been teaching the second grade PSR class, preparing our young ones for their Holy Communion and Sacrament of reconciliation. Hence, she is a familiar face at St. Martin’s. I am quite confidant that she will be the right person to lead our PSR program. I wish her all the best and offer prayers for her. She will later introduce herself during weekend mass. Thanks for welcoming the Deacon Ted who did the mission appeal talk a week ago. He was so pleased with the parish and his experi-ence here. We donated $1680.50 to the Mission appeal. Thanks to all who contributed generously to this great cause.

VISION 25-----YEAR 2 (JULY 01, 2018—JUNE 30, 2019)

Last week we reviewed the accomplishments of our !irst year of Vision

25. It was a vibrant year! The challenge is to keep that vibrancy alive

each year. We can do this!!!!!!!

Today we are starting YEAR TWO—VIBRANT LITURGIES (i.e. SPIRITU-

AL EXPERIENCES in general). Suggestions so far include: sponsoring a

parish mission, inviting speakers to talk on different spiritual topics,

holding an outdoor weekend Mass, walking the Stations of the Cross at

Our Lady of the Snows, !inding ways to continue to bring young people

into church; encouraging personnel from Liturgy as Sacrament, Choir,

Liturgy as Ministry, PSR/RCIA and Children’s Liturgy (as well as other

ministries) to review sections in the Vision 25 Document pertaining to

their ministries and then implement any appropriate suggestions

found there as well as any new inspirations. Other suggestions are wel-

come from parishioners. Please use the Suggestion Box.

The only !inancial suggestion in the V-25 Administrative Document for

the coming year was to do church organ and piano maintenance. How-

ever, repairing the !loor in the body of the church, which was deferred

this year, will likely need to be done in 2018-2019.

No personnel changes were recommended in V-25 for 2018-2019.

Let’s have a vibrant spiritual year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU HOWDERSHELL CLEANERS

In 1984, Mary and Richard Koch started Howdershell Cleaners located at 6857 Howdershell. They initially purchased this business for their two daughters. Mr. and Mrs Koch were one of the first fami-lies of St. Martin de Porres Parish. The dad requested that the daughters do all the cleaning for the clerical vestments of St. Martin's at no cost for as long as they owned the business. Richard is de-ceased but the daughters have been living up to that request for about 35 years. We, the members of the clergy, want to express our appreciation for all the years of support and service to our par-ish. The parishioners should consider taking their dry cleaning needs to this generous, competent and professional business.
