TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 2, 2018

REFLECTION ON THE BIRTH OF MARY —SEPTEMBER 8

We can see every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in his creative work. The loving parents have shown hope in a world filled with travail. The new child has the potential to be a channel of God’s love and peace to the world. This is all true in a magnificent way in Mary. If Jesus is the perfect expression of God’s love, Mary is the foreshadowing of that love. If Jesus has brought the fullness of salvation, Mary is its dawning. Birthday celebrations bring happiness to the celebrant as well as to family and friends. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary’s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each time we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large. (from franciscanmedia.org)

CELEBRATING MARY’S BIRTHDAY

—SEPTEMBER 8 You are cordially invited to attend Monthly Prayer with Mary

on Saturdary, September 8 after the 8:30 am Mass in Mary’s Chapel. We will recite the Rosary, have a brief reflection on our Blessed Mother, and then have fellowship (with a birthday cake!) in the Jackson Room. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend.

MOMENT WITH HOLY MARY Moment with Holy Mary meets every Friday (except First Friday) at 9:00 am in the Jackson Room (lower church). Offer glory and praise to God through prayers and psalms. Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet for our sins, conversion and for those in need. Reflect on Sunday readings or religious writings. Learn from the lives of the Saints and participate in a short discussion. Contact Laura at [email protected] for more info.

HAVE YOU LOST A LOVED ONE? BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

SEPTEMBER 7—OCTOBER 19 When grieving the loss of a loved one,

individuals may feel overwhelmed and lonely. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Saint Joseph Parish offers a Bereavement Support Group led by parishioner John Fuhrman for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Anyone interested, including parishioners from other churches, are welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 7 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from September 7—October 19 in the Parish Life Center (268 Grove St, Oradell, NJ—behind the lower school building), If you would like to participate, or if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at 201-261-0148.

HELP THE CHURCH IN EASTERN EUROPE

Your donation today helps restore the Church and build the future in over 25 countries still struggling to recover in the aftermath of Communist rule. Funds from this collection help support reconstruction, education, formation, and poverty outreach. Please use your church envelope or make out your check to “Saint Joseph Church” and memo it “Eastern Europe Collection.” You can drop your donation (appropriately labeled) in the collection basket this week or next. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/ccee Thank you for your generosity.

RESTORE THE CHURCH BUILD THE FUTURE

NEW BOILER COMING TO SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH

In the next few weeks you will see work begin on replacing our 65-year-old church boiler. The work will be

done thanks to your generous donations to the “We Are Living Stones” capital campaign. While the work is taking place, all Masses will be celebrated in the Upper Church. Once work begins, the Harrison Street entrance will be closed and we ask that parishioners enter the church either from the main doors on Elm Street or through the Grand Street side entrance.

BECOME AN ALTAR SERVER If your child (in grade 4-8) is interested in learning more about becoming an altar server, or if you have any questions about the ministry yourself, please contact Fr. Anthony at [email protected] or call 201-261-0148 X13.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Be doers of the word

and not hearers only…” (James 1:22)

It’s easy to understand the definition of stewardship. The hard part is living

it! What do you do to live God’s word? Do you share your time in prayer with God? Do you use your talent to help those in need? Are you generous with your financial resources? If not, what are you waiting for?
