LOVE

Our Mother tends her children everywhere, attentive to our every need and prayer.

She comes in nights of loneliness and fear with her loving message, “I am near!”

In times of pain, despair or rankling doubt her healing kiss puts Satan’s hordes to rout.

She comes to tell her love through little ones, like shepherd children playing in the sun,

a peasant finding roses in the snow, a maiden at a cave where Faith will grow.

Oh Mother, grant that I may ever be more worthy of the love you have

for me!

Marie Chiarella —Our Parishioner

THE ASSUMPTION: A SIGN OF HOPE Is the resurrection a concept or reality? For many of us, the resurrection of the dead may be a stray idea recited in the Nicene Creed. Heaven we discuss. But resurrection? The feast of the Assumption is a reminder to us that heaven gets even better! We pray that the souls of the faithful departed would soon be united to God in heaven. The truth is, the separation between our souls and our bodies was not God’s original plan for things. It’s one of the results of the Fall, of original sin. At the end of time and Jesus’ second coming, our bodies and souls will be reunited. Lest we forget, Mary’s Assumption is the reminder. On August 15, we celebrate that Mary is enjoying what

we, too, hope to participate in — complete joy in heaven with our God, experienced body and soul. Today and every day, let’s pray for those who have died and that we may meet them again in the heavenly kingdom. ©LPi

Brother John Blazo, a missionary from the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, will speak at all Masses the weekend of Aug. 24-25. Maryknoll is the popular name for the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, which was founded 100 years ago to follow Christ’s command to preach the Gospel to all the nations. They serve principally among the poor in places where the Church is unknown or in great need. For more information, please visit www.maryknollsociety.org

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 11, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK When our seminary class studied Moral Theology, the issue of inevitable consequences to ethical choices came under consideration. It was described as the theory of the “camel’s nose” or the “slippery slope” (since once the camel

got its nose into the tent, pretty soon the whole camel would get in; or once you began to slide down a snowy hill, sooner or later you would reach its bottom). This August, the people of New Jersey have seen the validity of these colorful descriptions with the passage of a law allowing what is euphemistically called euthanasia or doctor-assisted suicide or mercy killing, which Bill Donohue, the redoubtable head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, has said “is not a slippery slope—it’s a sheet of ice.” The Catholic Church has long warned that this would be the predictable outcome of our now totally permissive abortion laws, which, you may remember, began with their supporters telling us that their provisions would apply only to a narrow range of circumstances and now have “progressed” to the point where babies on the very verge of independent life can be eliminated. Now we are assured, with smiles of false compassion, that the decision to end lives is surrounded by numerous protective and cautionary features, but I think we know in our hearts that the day is coming when the deadly result will evolve from a “personal choice” to a “civic duty” that will ensure that expensive medical resources are not selfishly consumed by those who will soon die. This has already happened in the Netherlands, which led the way to permissive euthanasia laws. A 1990 survey in that country found that, in that year, 400 Dutch citizens opted for suicide, but that an additional 11,800 were euthanized, 5,941 of them without their consent. And 13,506 others were denied treatment that could have saved their lives, something that has been called “euthanasia by omission.” You may recall the late Jack Kevorkian, often called “Dr. Death,” who was listed among the distinguished alumni of the University of Michigan (along with President Gerald Ford, football star Tom Brady and actor James Earl Jones) on the Smithsonian Channel’s “Aerial America” series. Although he had his medical license taken away, he devoted the rest of his life to helping people illegally kill themselves by tying together bottles of poison and administering them to unfortunate people in his van. He did away with at least 130 people, some of whom weren’t even medically ill but were dealing with psychological troubles. Eager to provoke a court decision, Kervorkian dumped at least one corpse outside a Michigan sheriff’s office. He also claimed that

(continued above)

if he was ever convicted of a crime, he would go on a hunger strike in jail. Eventually he was convicted of second-degree murder, but he never followed through with his starvation pledge. The late Mike Wallace, who had formed a bizarre relationship to Kevorkian and televised one of his euthanasia procedures on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” signed him up for another appearance on the show when his sentence was about to end. Wallace was on hand to meet Kevorkian outside the prison gates when he was released. More than 2,400 years ago, the Hippocratic Oath that was long taken by doctors stated, as its first principal, “do no harm.” It also said, “I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it nor will I make a suggestion to this effect.” The whole tradition behind its value system was that it was the work of physicians to heal and never kill. The solution to dealing with the suffering that occurs near death is to lessen pain, not to kill people. The neurologist Dr. Kathleen Foley has said that “It’s a well-documented fact that those asking for assisted suicide almost always change their mind once we have their pain under control.” And Jesuit Father Robert J. Spitzer has noted that almost 100% of patients requesting euthanasia for pain change their minds when their pain and depression are treated. He also says that 96% of all pain can be 100% controlled with today’s medications. The clearest authoritative Catholic teaching on euthanasia was issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which insisted that

It is necessary to state firmly once more that nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent human being, whether a fetus or an embryo, an infant or adult, an older person, or one suffering from an incurable disease, or a person who is dying. Furthermore, no one is permitted to ask for this act of killing, either for himself or herself or for another person entrusted to his or her care, nor can he or she consent to it, either explicitly or implicitly. Nor can any authority legitimately recommend or permit such an action. For it is a question of the violation of the divine law, an offense against the dignity of the human person, a crime against life, and an attack on humanity.

Msgr. David Hubba

A PRAYER FOR LIFE (from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers)

Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen

Next week, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. While the Church in Africa is growing, many

still lack access to basic resources as well as pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The fund supports pastoral projects that strengthen communities in their faith and foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/africa To make your donation: simply use your parish envelope or make out your check to “Saint Joseph Church” and memo it “Solidarity Fund/Church in Africa.”
