SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Youth and Teens from our Youth Ministry Team spent last Saturday morning making sandwiches for the poor be-

fore a visit with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in Newark. Brother Thomas (pictured with our youth/teens

and our Youth Minister Ellen Solinas and Spiritual Director Fr. Anthony) gave witness to his personal vocation sto-

ry, gave a tour and a history of the CFR’s friary and shared in discussion about their work with the poor and spread-

ing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our parishioners were blessed to share in the celebration of a Betrothal Ceremony of our parish couples engaged

to be married this year. On the occasion of World Marriage Day they received blessings from Fr. Anthony and our

Pastor Msgr. Hubba at the Saturday 5pm Mass last weekend. Please continue to pray for God’s blessing to come

upon our happy couples as they continue to prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage and joyfully await the day of

their wedding!

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 16, 2020

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION REMINDER Thank you to those who took our “spiritual adoption” prayer cards. Please continue to pray daily for the next nine months that one particular but unknown child’s life will be spared from abortion.

Some parishioners have reacted to the past

weeks' remarks about Christ's Real Presence in the Eucharist.

• Marie Chiarella has composed reflections in verse, which are printed on this page. Marie, thank you for your beautiful thoughts in poetry!

• CCD teacher Bob Valentino loaned me his copy of Joan Carroll Cruz’s book Eucharistic Miracles, which recounts Eucharistic phenomena over the centuries; One miracle she notes occurred in the Umbrian town of

Bolsena in the 13th century. A priest passing through on pilgrimage, who had doubts about the Real Presence, offered a Mass at which the consecrated host bled onto the corporal, the altar cloth on which the bread and wine are placed. The cloth was presented to Pope Urban IV, who was staying at nearby Orvieto, and helped influence him to establish the feast of Corpus Christi, for which he recruited St. Thomas Aquinas to help compose the liturgy.

The modern Polish writer Gustaw Herling, who won his nation's equivalent of the Medal of Honor for his bravery when his unit finally conquered the German-held heights at Monte Cassino in World War II, wrote a beautifully crafted story about the Bolsena miracle called "The Second Coming." To give an idea of how appealing his writing is, when the first reports, of the miracle are brought to the Pope, who is already close to death, Herling writes: "Then his colorless eyes took on an expression of impatience, the expression of all mortally ill men whose last thoughts are already entering other zones, and who are beseeching the obtrusive world to leave off its vain noise."

• I invite parish students in ninth grade or under to submit entries for a contest to provide a good English translation of Mozart's great Eucharistic hymn "Ave Verum Corpus. " Its Latin words are printed below.

Translations don't have to be entrants' original work. The winner will receive a gift certificate for $25. Ties will be settled by a drawing. The deadline for submissions is March 1. (Send them to the rectory.) Other great composers have set these words to music, but Mozart's version is the most cherished all.

(continued above)

Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine; cujus latus, perforatum, unda fluxit et sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum In mortis examine.

These powerful words remind us of many important truths about the Eucharist. When we receive Holy Communion, we are truly fed by the real Christ, who

loved us so much that he gave up his life for us. When

we receive him in this strengthening nourishment, we

are also anticipating the full union with him that will one

day be ours in Heaven, where our joy will be complete.

Msgr. David Hubba

THE REAL PRESENCE

Jesus came to save us, born in a stable bare, While Herod, Satan’s minion, spewed child-blood everywhere. What love is this that caused the Lord to leave His angel bands, to heal the sick, the blind and lame, and hold the lepers’ hands? He cleansed the sinner, fed the poor, taught truth and raised the dead. But greater far beyond all gifts, He made Himself our Bread. By Marie Chiarella

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee
