Dear folks,I write this letter on December 17th, the day following the great snow storm. It was quite the storm. The poor folks clear-ing the parking lot were here until 2:00 this morning. This letter is bring composed for the Sunday following Christmas... December 27th. It hardly seems appropriate to thank people for the Christmas events before they take place. I will do that later. Many thanks to all the parishioners who have been readying the parish for Christ-mas. The Choirs and their practices. The sacristans in setting the altar for the coming events. The great Knights of Columbus in setting up the creche in front of the Church. I dare say they outdid their counterparts in the Vatican. But that is another story.

Fr. Heisler has returned from his time in in quarantine no worse for the wear. We are hitting on all cylinders in our final steps toward Christmas. Deacon Larry was amazed that, in this pandemic, when most parishes in the country are cutting back on their Mass schedules we are adding Masses.

We will be shy one deacon for the holidays. Deacon Jack Va-sallo is still hospitalized at Loudoun Hospital. He suffers from the Covid Virus and is, unawake, on a respirator. Let us all remember him and our others parishioners suffering from the virus… two of whom are children. Let us pray for one another. For the meantime I leave you from a lessen I learned many many years ago. One our priests was a graduate student at the University of Virginia. The school focused on English Litera-ture. The lesson learned, and offered, at the post Christmas party for priests focused on the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” I leave this review to your enjoyment. https://www.catholic-newsagency.com/resources/advent/customs-and-traditions/the-history-of-the-twelve-days-of-christmas

“The song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in Eng-land were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. To fit the number scheme, when you reach number 9, representing the Fruits of the Holy Ghost, the originator combined 6 to make 3, taking the 6 fruits that were similar: the fruit in each parenthesis is the that was not named separately. There are actually Twelve Fruits of the Holy Ghost.

The "True Love" one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend but Jesus Christ, because truly Love was born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also representsHim because that bird is willing to sacrifice its life if necessary to protect its young by feigning injury to draw away predators.

According to Ann Ball in her book, HANDBOOK OF CATHOLIC SACRAMENTALS:The two turtle doves were the Old and New TestamentsThe three French hens stood for faith, hope, and love. The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The five golden rings rerepresented the first five books of the Old Testament, which describe man’s fall into sin and the great love of God in sending a Savior. The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit-----Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contri-bution, Leadership, and Mercy. The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit-----Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience [Forbearance], Goodness [Kindness], Mildness, Fidelity, Modesty, Continency [Chastity].The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments. The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful Apostles. The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in The Apostles’ Creed.”

Collegiate Answer. Offered by Fr. David Meng, who often helps us in time of need. The country, Venezuela, was named by the Italian Missionaries who came in the 16th century. It seems the natives along the coast would build their homes, on stilts, over the water. Much like their home in “Venice, Italy.” Hence the origin of the name for the country in South America came from the city in Italy.Collegiate Question. What were the common colors of the three wisemen? And Why? Good hunting. In the Gould house with many many hands to test the figurines of the cresche there were two or three cresches represented due to broken figures. So Mary, may have been much bigger than Joseph and two wise-man of the same color. And sheep without shepherds. It didn’t matter much… it was all about the baby Jesus in the manger.

Merry Christmas.
