REFLECTIONS/ REFLECCIONES

La Sagrada Familia Todos nosotros nacimos en una familia en particular. No elegimos nuestro grupo de padres y hermanos, que es muy diferente de nuestra conciencia deliberada de elegir a nuestros amigos. Fue el Padre Celestial de Jesús quien eligió a María y José para ser la familia terrenal de su Hijo. Brindaban la seguridad psicológica de un hogar para el bebé Jesús. Lo criaron bien para no ser egocéntrico y egoísta, sino como un hombre para otros hasta el punto de sacrificarse y entregar su vida en la cruz, un amor heroico y valiente. En la Carta de San Pablo a los Colosenses, dijo: "Pongan compasión sincera, bondad, humildad, mansedumbre, paciencia, soportándose unos a otros y perdonándose unos a otros; como el Señor te ha perdonado, así también debes hacerlo, pero sobre todo, vístete con el amor que es el vínculo de la perfección. "Ahí lo tenemos, el vínculo que hace santa a la familia es AMOR - COMPASIÓN, que no es descabellado para creo que vino en abundancia en la Sagrada Familia. Fue dentro de ese círculo familiar que Jesús, como un ser humano real como nosotros, debe haber sido despertado por primera vez en ese poderoso y asombroso misterio de amor. El pegamento que mantiene unida a la familia es la compasión, que literalmente significa "sentir con el otro", para entrar, por así decirlo, en los sentimientos del otro. ¿Cómo se vería el mundo desde el punto de vista del otro, es decir "caminar en sus zapatos" para identificarse con el otro? Es por eso que tenemos reuniones familiares, celebraciones de aniversario y reuniones festivas porque queremos revivir y reavivar una y otra vez ese ambiente familiar que llamamos hogar. La familia de Jesús, María y José fue llamada "santa", no solo porque había una atmósfera hogareña palpable, sino más aún porque el amor mutuo estaba subordinado a un amor mayor, es decir, el amor de Dios. Su amor estaba situado en un contexto más elevado, el amor inclusivo y universal de Dios para la humanidad. María, con tanto amor por su hijo, comprendió y aceptó el acto abnegado de Cristo en la Cruz porque sometió su amor a su hijo al mayor amor de Dios por todos. The Holy Family All of us were born into a particular family. We did not choose our set of parents and siblings, which is very much different from our deliberate awareness of choosing our friends. It was Jesus’ Heavenly Father who chose Mary and Joseph to be His Son’s earthly family. They provided the psychological security of a home for the baby Jesus. They raised him well not to be egocentric and selfish but a man for others even to the point of sacrificing and giving up his life on the cross - a heroic and courageous love indeed. In the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians, he said: “Put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do, but above all, put on love which is the bond of perfection.” There we have it; the bond that makes the family holy is LOVE – COMPASSION, which is not farfetched to think that it came in abundance in the Holy Family. It was within that family circle that Jesus, as a real human being like us, must have been first awakened into that powerful and amazing mystery of love. The glue that keeps a family together is compassion, which literally means “to feel with the other,” to enter, as it were, into the feelings of the other. What might the world look like from the point of view of the other, that is “to walk in his shoes,” to identify with the other. As a student, one teacher told me that I should not outright judge and dismiss the writings of a thinker without first entering into his “world” and figure out what feel-ings and passions gave rise to his perspective. A mere collection of people waiting for a bus ride is not a fam-ily, neither is an aggregate of people eating in a cafeteria. What makes us a family is not only the feeling of intimacy or sense of belonging but much more, the constant reassurance that no mat-ter what, we are loved, accepted unconditionally, appreciated and respected? That is why we have family reunions, anniver-sary celebrations and festive gatherings because we want to relive and rekindle again and again that family atmosphere we call home. The family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph was called “holy,” not only because there was a palpable homey atmosphere, but more so because their love for each other was subordinated to a greater love, that is, God’s love. Their love was situated in a higher context, God’s inclusive and universal love for human-ity. Mary, with so much love for her son, understood and ac-cepted the self-sacrificing act of Christ on the Cross because she submitted her love for her son to God’s greater love for all. Joseph, put up all pains and inconveniences and obeyed the Angel’s commands because his love for the Baby Jesus and Mary was within the greater horizon of God’s love. He has to protect the Baby at all cost so that he would be able to fulfill his mission as foretold by the prophets. Jesus surely loved Mary and Joseph, yet his love is situated in a much greater context, that is to do the Father’s will – so He had to leave the comforts of home, because his food was to do the will of the ONE who sent him. A single needy soul is worth saving, because the truth is, all of us belong to God’s family, no wonder, when Jesus looked at the poor, the sinners, the in-firmed, the lowly – he always looked at them with compassion – because we are all his family. A Family becomes holy and the bond gets stronger as it subordinates love of family to the greater love of God.

Catechism CornerCatechism CornerCatechism CornerCatechism Corner Jesus Christ has come and our year is done! The year of

2017 is marked by moments of joy and sadness, trial and

triumph. Joy comes in the form of many babies being

born to our parish families. But the most important birth

is of the child in the manger, starting our New Year fresh

and with a clean slate. A newborn baby is so non-

threatening, so approachable so full of promise. We can

not help but smile as we contemplate the wonder of life.

Sadness came in the form of multiple deaths of Cecelia

Leger, Prima Fernandez, Imelda Villamar and Carol Carter

to name a few. But all these people led exemplary lives

of fortitude, clinging to our faith despite the outcome.

Trials came with a priest leaving, incurring controversy,

but emerged with the triumph of the whole parish pulling

together at the festival, making our diverse cultures,

foods and languages a source of unity. Further forms of

unity were seen in the Walk for Life, the parish missions,

the Confirmation retreats and the monthly visits to the

nursing homes. The ongoing bible studies, the homeless

shelter and 24/7 Eucharistic adoration make our parish a

beacon of hope to a world in need. When we come to-

gether to practice the corporal and spiritual works of

mercy, we truly are doing God's will. So let us vow to turn

to God in times of of joy and sadness, trial and triumph.

When we are grateful for the good and the bad, we ac-

cept all that God allows for us.

¡Jesucristo ha venido y nuestro año ha terminado! El año de

2017 está marcado por momentos de alegría y tristeza,

pruebas y triunfos. La alegría viene en la forma de muchos

bebés que nacen de nuestras familias parroquiales. Pero el

nacimiento más importante es el del niño en el pesebre,

comenzando nuestro Año Nuevo fresco y con un borrón y

cuenta nueva. Un bebé recién nacido no es tan amenazante,

tan accesible y lleno de promesas. No podemos evitar son-

reír al contemplar la maravilla de la vida. La tristeza vino en

forma de muertes múltiples de Cecilia Léger, Prima

Fernández, Imelda Villamar y Carol Carter por nombrar al-

gunas. Pero todas estas personas llevaron una vida ejemplar

de fortaleza, aferrándose a nuestra fe a pesar del resultado.

Las pruebas llegaron con la partida de un sacerdote, lo que

provocó controversia, pero surgió con el triunfo de toda la

parroquia reuniéndose en el festival, haciendo de nuestras

diversas culturas, alimentos e idiomas una fuente de uni-

dad. Se observaron otras formas de unidad en la Caminata

por la Vida, las misiones parroquiales, los retiros de Confir-

mación y las visitas mensuales a los hogares de ancianos.

Los estudios bíblicos en curso, el refugio para indigentes y la

adoración eucarística las 24 horas, los 7 días de la semana,

hacen de nuestra parroquia un faro de esperanza para un

mundo necesitado. Cuando nos reunimos para practicar las

obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales, realmente

estamos haciendo la voluntad de Dios. Así que hagamos

votos de volvernos a Dios en tiempos de alegría y tristeza,

prueba y triunfo. Cuando estamos agradecidos por lo bueno

y lo malo, aceptamos todo lo que Dios nos permite.
