Dear Parishioners,
The United States of America celebrates the 242nd
birthday on Wednesday, the 4th of July. Our Parish Mass,
praying for our nation on Independence Day, will be at
9:00 am.
When the pilgrims on the Mayflower signed the
Mayflower Compact in 1621, even before disembarking,
they swore to serve “the Common Good” of the colony.
While our individual rights are and will be a super blessing
in our country, we have lost a sense of the Common Good,
(not me, my, and I but We and Us). This is the social con-
tract that keeps us together as a nation. Think less “me”
and more “us”.
Bless us, good Lord, this week.
President Reagan, speaking in Normandy, France,
on the 40th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 1984, said the
following:
“The men of Normandy had faith that what they
were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humani-
ty, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this
beachhead, or on the next. It was the deep knowledge—and
pray God we have not lost it—that there is a profound mor-
al difference between the use of force for liberation and the
use of force for conquest. You were here to liberate, not to
conquer, and so you and those others did not doubt your
cause. And you were right not to doubt.
You all knew that some things are worth dying for.
One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth
dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of
government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty.
All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the
people of your countries were behind you.
The Americans who fought here that morning knew
word of the invasion was spreading through the darkness
back home. They fought—or felt in their hearts, though
they couldn’t know in fact, that in Georgia they were filling
the churches at 4:00 a.m. In Kansas they were kneeling on
their porches and praying. And in Philadelphia they were
ringing the Liberty Bell.
…Here, in this place where the West held together,
let us make a vow to our dead. Let us show them by our
actions that we understand what they died for. Let our
actions say to them the words for which Matthew Ridgway
listened: “I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.”
Strengthened by their courage and heartened by
their value (valor) and borne by their memory, let us contin-
ue to stand for the ideals for which they lived and died.”
During the month of July, several important
improvements will take place in our Church building.
St. Aloysius church was built in 1923-24, 94 years ago.
Like your own home, it must be kept up and at times,
updated.
Our insurance company is requiring us to put
EXIT lights over all our doors in the church, together with
emergency lighting and battery packs. This has become
standard procedure for any building used for gatherings of
people. Also, we hope to put a restroom in the former
baptistry of the church, (southwest corner, across from rec-
tory) and redo the present small bathroom in the sacristy.
Our center aisle is becoming a safety problem because of
loose plies under the carpeting which cause bumps here and there.
We hope to install an oak floor in the center aisle with appropri-
ate design as part of it. (Carpeting in a church can destroy acous-
tics).
We also hope to update our 1924 vestibule, solve some
of the clutter, and replace the tile floor. It’s long overdue.
I will keep you informed on the above. The cost? All
these projects will be paid for from our parish sharing in “We Are
Living Stones” - part of the rebate we receive for the specific
projects we mentioned at that time.
Use the summer well. Get some R and R, renew old
friendships, find God in nature, catch up on your reading, and so
forth: the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Through Baptism, we become Children of God and
members of the household of faith. Children should be
baptized in the faith community to which their parents
belong, that is, the Parish in which they are registered
and active members. Call the rectory to make
arrangements. Parents are reminded that godparents
must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and
are actively practicing their faith.
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (Penance)

Immaculate Heart Academy, Township of Washing-
ton, NJ, is hosting various summer enrichment cours-
es through its popular Summer@theheart program.
