SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION

In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed Himself the sheep gate, and all His sheep had to go through Him. Today He teaches: “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The early generations of believers had not yet hit upon the terminology: Christianity. Rather they simply called their lived faith the Way. Both of these Gospels are taken from the last discourse of Jesus. They lead to him saying, as we hear today: “whoever believes in me will do the works that I do. And will do greater ones…” One of the great themes of the Old Testament prophets in preparing the way for the Messiah, and one taken up by Jesus was that of a loving God’s predilection for the poor and the powerless in society. It was expressed in the vocabulary of concern for the welfare of widows and orphans, i.e. those most vulnerable. Jesus began His new law with: “Blessed are the poor…” In the immediate post Resurrection era, as the community of believers began to expand beyond the Aramaic speakers of Judea and Galilee, the community (cf 1st reading from Acts, it wasn’t just the Apostles) recognized that the Hellenist widows, i.e. those who had been assimilated into the prevailing Greek culture, were being neglected in their material needs. So, they commissioned seven men – all of whom had Greek names, to minister to those needs. We know that at least two of them Stephen and Phillip went beyond material needs and were instrumental in spreading the faith to the larger community. Historically, as the lives of the Saints attest, the Church has repeatedly adapted to meet the needs of the vulnerable. This responsibility to recognize and act remains true today, “to do the works that (Jesus does)”. That is the Way.

On behalf of Father Vaughan, Father Yanas and staff, we wish to express our best wishes to all mothers as they celebrate the day on which they are honored. Please be assured that your intentions will be remembered at the altar of God. May our Lord bless and keep you. With respect and

affection. Fr. Yanas

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 10, 2020

SCHOOL NEWS Missing You: The administration, faculty and staff of your Catholic school continue to work from home in providing the best possible distance learning for the students. Mr. Casile and Father Yanas keep us informed, united and faith filled. We look forward to the day that we can be together again in one space; filling the church and halls with joy and laughter. You are all in our daily prayers so keep safe and healthy! Sharing the Sweets: There were eight boxes of Hershey’s candy bars remaining from our recent fundraiser just sitting in the school office. It was decided that others would benefit from a sweet treat and we know that most people love chocolate so three boxes have been donated to Vanderheyden and five were given to the Troy Fire Fighters. Registration Continues: Registration for the 2020-2021 school year continues. Our current families have a re-registration packet that they can complete and mail into the school and all new and interested families may contact the school for information and a registration packet. The school office answering machine is routinely checked but it would be best to contact Administrative Assistant Janet MacLasco at [email protected]. We are all currently working from home but do drop into the office as needed.

Thank You: Your support of the Price Chopper Tools for Schools Program allowed us to acquire several pieces of equipment for our gym program, a new clock for the faculty room and a large package of markers for the office. We had just over 75,000 points to “spend” in their catalog and our physical education teacher, Bobby Burns, was able to order something off of his “wish list”.

I was told it’s springtime but you wouldn't know it by the weather. So let’s make Sacred Heart beautiful again this Spring. Will

you adopt a section of our gardens and planters? We’ll have a gardening day in May to dress up our church grounds. Call the office 518-274-1363!
