If you should ever be strolling alongthe stretch of Jalan Istana inSandakan, the much-talked aboutAgnes Keith House is hard to miss. With its sprawling green lawns andcolonial-style wooden walls, the

residence has since been restored bythe Sabah Museum, in collboration withthe Federal Department of Museumsand Antiquities.

This British colonial governmentquarters, called Newlands, was onceoccupied by famous American writer,Agnes Newton Keith, who penned LandBelow The Wind in 1939. Two booksfollowed her first success, namelyThree Came Home (1946) and WhiteMan Returns (1951). With the exception of the second book, LandBelow the Wind and White ManReturns were written in the house onthe hill where she had the best views ofSandakan Bay at the front and the SuluSea at the back.

Newlands was rebuilt some time in1946/47 and was the first governmentpermanent timber dwelling to be builtafter the Second World War. It was builtupon the ruined foundations of the original house that was destroyed during the war.

The house became home to Agnesand her family, Henry (also referred toas Harry) George Keith, who was theConservator of Forests and their son,George. When the Keiths left Sabah in1952, the house was occupied by subsequent Conservators of Forests, forestry officers, volunteers and otherstaff. Though the Keiths never retunedto Sabah, the house was alwaysreferred to as Agnes Keith’s House byvisitors who never stopped coming tosee it.

Today the house has been restoredand turned into a heritage house, providing interesting insights to life during British North Borneo. It is furnished with a reproduction of colonialfurniture and antiques. A gallery on thefirst floor tells the story of this remarkable woman, her books and herfamily. A Keith time-line starts in 1873and ends in 2004 tracing the past to thepresent Keiths.

“The new house is beautiful. Roundtrippers on world boats would come upto see it, carrying their cameras andcalling, Why look!”

(Agnes Keith, White Man Returns,1951, p.87)

The Agnes Keith House is open dailyexcept Fridays from 9am to 5pm. Forfurther information, please contactthe Sabah Museum at 088-225033/253199 or 089-222679.
