Cheeky long-tailed macaques, rare silver leaf monkeys and hand-some water buffaloes roam in the mangrove forests and theplains along the Garama River. Birdwatchers delight in catching

sight of birds like the gold-whiskered barbets, blue-eared kingfishersand olive-winged bulbuls perched in the trees. Even the calm waters arealive with crocodiles that occasionally peep above the murky water. Theshow doesn’t stop there. After the sun sets, the trees magically twinklewith thousands of fireflies.

But the stars of the Garama River are the curious-looking proboscismonkeys that balance on the trees along the river early in the morningand later in the day. The Garama attracts thousands of visitors eachyear who eagerly climb into boats for a relaxing ride and a chance tocatch sight of these fascinating primates on the Garama River Cruise.

The distinctive nose that hangs off the face of the male monkeysgave the monkey the perfect name. In the Malay language these pri-mates are called “Monyet Belanda” or “Dutch Monkeys” because thelocals thought they looked like the Dutch colonizers who had big noses!Reaching up to 7 inches in length, the nose plays the main part in cre-ating that resonant call they make to warn enemies. As skillful climbersand competent swimmers the proboscis monkeys live around man-grove swamps and riverine areas, hence river cruises as the vehicle fora visit to their homes.

The Garama River is in the district of Beaufort, a small town 2 hoursaway from Kota Kinabalu. From Beaufort town it is another 25 kilome-tres before you reach the starting point of your cruise. Arrange your tripand cruise with a licensed tour operator.

About 39,643 of the 49,358 total population in Ranau arepeople from the Dusun tribe. Before corporate times, the

Dusun Ranau were traditionally rice farmers, rubberplanters, hunters and vegetable and fruit sellers. Both themen and women work together in planting and harvesting paddy as the main way of earning money for living. Since Mount Kinabalu is located in Ranau, many of them also work as mountainguides and porters. The Ranau Dusuns also celebrate theKaamatan (Harvest) Festival in every month of May everyyear, just like the other Dusuns from other districts. The mostpopular traditional foods of Ranau Dusun are known as‘tuhau’ and ‘bosou’. The term ‘tuhau’ came from the plantthat is used to make the food itself - tuhau, which is choppedand then mixed with vinegar and salt. ‘Bosou’ is made ofrice, fish, and pangi (as the Ranau Dusun called it) and alsosalt. The Ranau Dusun dwelling is mostly made of wood andbamboo. The native language spoken is Dusun. Today theyounger generation is conversant in Malay as well. Medtemuis a dance performed when the Ranau Dusun meet to settlea dispute among themselves. Medtemu stands for “a meet-ing to settle disputes” and this dance reflects that withstomps & barks from the dancers. Today the dance is per-formed during social occasions & can be seen during theKaamatan Festival. The dance is performed to a gong beatcalled the siri-siri petinduk. In this dance, the men wear avest made of tree bark while the women dress in an intri-cately embroidered garment called sinambayaka.
