    Hotdipgalvanising

    The thickness of the zinc layer created during hotdip galvanising depends on the silicon content of the steel. Ruukkiguarantees a silicon content of 0.150.25% for double grade structural hollow sections.Whenusingappropriate hotdipgalvanisingmethodsthisallowstheformationofazinclayerofover100m,whichissufficientformostapplications.

    Machining

    Ruukkiusesmicroalloyingandlowcarboncontent initsfinegrainsteels.Forthisreason,longitudinallyweldedjointdoesnotharden,whichdecreasesthewearofcuttingblades.ComparedtogradeS355J2H,thetensilestrengthofRuukkidoublegradeisonly30MPahigher,whichmeansthatmachiningpropertiesofthetwosteelgradesaresimilar.

    Forming

    The formabilityofRuukkidoublegrade isparticularlygood. Itsminimumelongation is thesameaswithS355J2H,whichensuresexcellentdeformationcapacity. Inaddition, thesteelgradehasauniformmicrostructureandavery lowsulphurcontent.Thisensures,forexample,excellentexpandability.

    Welding

    Ruukkiguaranteesamaximumcarbonequivalentof0.39fordoublegradestructuralhollowsections.Therefore,theproductcan be welded with all conventional welding methods and no special measures, such as preheating, are needed.Recommended welding consumables are shown in table 4. The structural engineer must take the steel gradespecificminimumandmaximumweldspecificationsintoaccountwhendesigningwelds.

    Whenwelding structures that requirewelding qualifications in compliancewith standardEN 2871, the qualification testmustbepassedat theminimum inmaterialclass2.1of thestandard ISO5608.Suchstructures include,amongothers,steelstructuresmadeincompliancewithEN10902.
