Concrete + Asphalt = Degradation

Today we will discuss the different types of concrete vs. asphalt damage and offer

suggestions for solving those problems.

The three most common locations for adjacent asphalt and concrete breakdown are bridges,

driveways and parking lots.

To begin repairing damage or filling joints between concrete and asphalt you must decide what color you

want your final repair to be.

Black• FloMix • PolyFlexDS Black

Gray• FlexSet• Concrete Welder Gray• PolyFlexDS Gray

To Begin Your Repair

Make sure your repair is not on a slope of more than 20°

Page 9: Roklin U Presents Bridging the Gap in Pavement Repair Webinar

Preparing Your Repair

• Cracks under 3/8 inch should be widened to create a reservoir for the material to penetrate. • Clean joints with a diamond blade and a shop vac• Use 4-inch tuck point grinder to clean uneven edges

Preparing Your Repair

Once clean, you can pre-fill with sand, keeping within ½ inch from the surface and sweep away

excess sand.

Tip

Widening the top of the crack will allow for better flow

Preparing Your Pavement

Cracks and joints must be clean and dry. Sweep or blow out the cracks.

Preparing Your Pavement

• If there is water present, use a heat lance or a propane torch to dry the pavement. • Do not overheat the pavement as this can cause structural damage. • If you have missed some of the moisture, the material will bubble. If this happens, we recommend scraping the surface and adding another layer of polyurethane.

Bridges

Asphalt and Concrete contact coupled with bridge expansion and contraction causes the asphalt to curl, creating a bump at the approach and departure of the bridge.• Grind the asphalt lip• Clean the surface and crack• Apply a layer of FloMix, a flexible material that will allow for expansion and contraction

Page 15: Roklin U Presents Bridging the Gap in Pavement Repair Webinar

Driveways

• Cracks should be filled from the bottom up if there is a slope• Pre-place sand• The grade should be 20 ° or less so that material will not flow too quickly or too far.

Parking Lots

If the damage is more on the asphalt, fill all small cracks off of the joint with PolyFlexDS Black mixed with sand first. If the repair is on the concrete side, use PolyFlexDS Gray to fill the cracks first. Next, if the joint is larger than ¾ of an inch, use FloMix to repair the damage.
