Welcome to the 9th edition of The Rocking the Daisies Music & Lifestyle Festival!

Jeez - It’s amazing to think we are 9 already. Time flies when you are having fun! From a little over 1, 000 thousand people at our first festival in 2006 to 20, 000 this year; we have come a very long way!

Being responsible for 20, 000 people brings completely different challenges to that of looking after 1, 000, but we are always looking to improve on every aspect of the festival.

This year we are paying particular attention to increasing the space, and improving the security and waste management. So there will be some changes specifically around these areas. As with any change it will take a little getting used to and we ask every festival goer to get involved and assist us with new procedures to ensure a safer, cleaner and more comfortable festival.

Let’s not forget our motto of playing hard but tread lightly – keeping the festival green is important to us so please do your bit and pick up your shit!

We’ve worked hard on ensuring our line-up is epic and had the privilege of seeing some of our Daisies 2014 international acts grace the stages at Glastonbury and

// brought to you by

Coachella this year. You are really in for a treat so prepare to be blown away!

Every year we choose a social or environmental project to support and this year we are lucky enough to be partnering with Bridges for Music, a non-profit organisation, which gathers key players of the music industry as well as music fans to raise global awareness about local issues through music in developing countries, leaving a positive impact and legacy in disadvantaged communities.

And lastly, we can’t forget our partners and sponsors! From our longstanding and productive relationship with Cloof Wine Estate, to the assistance of the Stellenbosch Academy of Design students who helped put this year’s online magazine together, and to all our sponsors: a big thank you to all of you. Without your help and support this festival would not be possible.

Channel 24 speaks to the lead singer of the Grammy-award-winning band: Andrew Van Wyngarden while the electronic rockers are on tour in Eastern Europe.

He told us about his influences, what touristy things he’s looking forward to doing in mzansi and explained the video for one of their latest singles.

Channel24//We’re so excited for your first shows on South African soil at Vodacom in The City and Rocking the Daisies this October.

Are there any fun activities that you have planned other than rocking the stage, like shark cage diving or something crazy?

Andrew//I’m excited and really happy (to be playing in South Africa).

That’s the first question everyone has been asking us (laughs) not specifically shark cage diving though. I would like to do that! Let’s do it!

MGMT// AN INTERVIEW

Page 7: Rocking the Daisies online magazine

Channel24// You’ve played music festivals from Glaston-bury to Coachella, what do you like about festival shows and why say yes to festival shows in South Africa?

Andrew//Well, we’ve never been to South Africa or even the continent of Africa so it seemed like a great trip to make and that’ll be sort-of-a once in a lifetime experience or maybe it’s not. Maybe we’ll come back, that would be cool too.

I’ve heard so much about it through surfing and I don’t know, just excited to check it out, have a new experience. (Sic)

Channel24//We love your tweets with different music videos, which artists inspired your latest self-titled album, MGMT?

Andrew//Oh man, so many so many different ones...I think in terms of the kind of layers of sound on the latest album it’s kind-of influenced by a lot of early 90s bands like AR Cane and this English band called Disco Inferno.

I think both those bands do this multi lay-ered...non standard way of making chords and we’re using a lot of analogue synthesiz-ers, there’s this one called the Phoenix and other bands who use it like Aphex Twin and some other electronic artists (have been in-fluential).

Channel24//One of your latest singles, off that album, Cool Song 2 has a beautiful video that we love. Could you tell us more about it, what’s the story behind it?

Andrew//It’s different from any other video that we’ve had. The director Isaiah Seret he came up with the story line after we went back and forth a bit but it was really his idea.

I think it’s kind of like a love story that takes the form of this weird disease happening. This guy turning into a tree and this other guy trying to save him. I think it’s really cool, (it’s a shame) that we weren’t actually at the shoot because we got to film at this beautiful place in Los Angeles where this guy doesn’t usually let people film.

Catch MGMT on the Main Stage at Rocking the Daisies on Saturday at 21:50.

Interview by Nic Anthony Berti

TEXX AND THE CITY

// What made you change your style of music from your first album, which was very electronic to the second, which is more Basque Folk?

Nothing in particular made us change our style between albums, but time, experience, situation and emotions can be powerful and changeable things when making music and we’re sure they all had a big influence on us.

// What’s the best crowd you have ever played to?

It’s very hard to judge which is the best crowd ever! There have been many, but I must give special mention to the crowd at our most recent show in the cathedral square in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, who were ridiculous. To be honest though, we are live in the moment types, and our most recent show is usually our best.

// You recently put together an actual cave rave, where was it and how’d you put it together?

It was in a huge cave just outside a small village in the Basque Country called Zugarramurdi and it was put together with much love and hard work by us and our amazing team in London and Zaragoza. The night itself was unreal, one of the best nights of our lives.

// Your latest single ‘Love Alight’ is awesome, can we expect more of the same style of music on your next album?

Expect the unexpected my friends.

// Talking about your next album, when can we expect it?

Unexpect it late this year, early next.

// As South Africans we are stoked to have you perform at Rocking the Daisies and In The City, what are you hoping to do on this tour?

We are extremely stoked to be coming to South Africa for the first time! Really it is a dream come true to be invited to play over there for you and we will certainly bring our top show for the people, as well as hopefully seeing some of the amazing culture and wildlife of your country.

// What’s the craziest thing you have heard about South Africa?

I heard you guys are on the same time zone as us?! That’s crazy!

//IDENTIFICATIONEven if your skin has lost that youthful glow or you can grow a beard of hipster proportions, don’t think you won’t get asked for ID at the door. Not only is this to keep out the minors, it’s also to validate you are who your ticket says you are. Bring your green ID book, a valid passport or a South African driver’s license. Forget it and you WILL be turned away at the gate. No affidavits, no temporaries, end of story.

//ZAM-BUKGet those lips soft for a night of smooching on the dance floor, soothe your burnt nose from the day at the dam or disinfect that cut on your knee caused by the rock that ‘came out of nowhere’.

//BABY WIPESIf you’re not up with the sparrows and don’t want to waste your hangover waiting in the shower

queues, a few of these over the important bits will make you feel fresh as a daisy.

//(NON)KILLER SHOESDaisies is bigger than ever this year so bring something that won’t give you blisters.

//WARM JACKETBring something warm, bring a pair of pants and top it off with a cute beanie.

//CAMERADocument your time at Daisies, just think carefully about how responsible you are when you’re losing your inhibitions after a few cold ones.

//SUNGLASSESThis may seem like an obvious one as no day-time outfit is complete without a rad pair of shades.

//TOOTHBRUSH & TOOTHPASTEBrush your teeth in the morning, but not with alcohol - that’s gross!

//SUN HATWhile we’re on this, bring some suncream too!

//DRINK OF CHOICEWe’re happy to let you drink in the campsite, as long as you don’t bring any glass.

//BAG When choosing which bag will

seamlessly work with all your outfits, try to choose one that will close securely. We do our absolute best to keep out the opportunists but if your bag is hanging open, displaying all your valuables, you’re asking for trouble.

//BLANKETNot everyone is fortunate enough to have a cuddle bunny and being cold and alone is the worst.

//CARABINERCar keys are amongst the most lost & found items at our festival. Invest in a cheap carabiner, you can get one at any outdoor shop and keep those keys attached to you.

//TOILET PAPERYou never know when you’ll need this white gold.

//WATER BOTTLE We also don’t sell plastic bottles of water at the bar, so bring yourself a bottle, fill it up at one of our free water points and stay hydrated.

//TORCHBring along a head torch or a handheld one and let the AA batteries do the work. Tripping over a guy-rope is an awkward way to end a night.

//RUBBISH BAGS If you wouldn’t litter at home,

DON’TFORGET...

don’t litter here. Do your bit, pick-up your shit! Thanks.

//COMPACT MIRRORA great way to check that your face is clean and there’s no food in your teeth before emerging from your tent.

//TOWELIf you’re showering, you’ll need one. If you’re jumping in the dam at sunrise, you’ll want one. And if you forgot that extra blanket, it could be used for extra warmth at night.

//GUMBOOTSIf you can’t decide which pair of your shoes you’re willing to risk possibly ruining, bring a pair of gumboots. Plus, if there’s any rain or mud, you’re going to be glad you didn’t bring your new, white high tops.

//PILLOWTrust us, a pillow is much better to rest your weary head on than the hard tent floor.

//CHEWING GUMAfter a chow down at the food court, you’re going to want fresh breath as you carry on jolling.

//CONDOMSIf you’re single, ready to mingle and plan on getting lucky at Daisies, bring some protection. Lecture over.

treasures. From crazy and beautiful shirts and quirky hats, to antique leather boots and edgy jackets – there are plenty of thrift store items waiting to be reinvented.

Explore and have fun with your vintage pieces this season, mix it up and don’t be afraid to amplify your personality a little bit.

When dressing for a music festival there is an opportunity to embrace that little bit of alter ego inside of yourself, so push the boundaries of what you would usually wear and step out of the comfort zone of your every-day style. While jamming to your favourite band or DJ you want to be comfortable and stylish at the same time. Pairing a stylish vintage piece with an oversized denim jacket, a printed shirt, or a full-length pleated skirt is always a win!

Visiting a thrift store can be quite overwhelming, but if you look (and you’ll need to look hard), you can find some incredible

WILDERBEATS

WILDEBEATS

Q&A WITH

With a steady torrent of critical acclaim flowing his way from all corners of the country - be it recogni-tion in the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans, or winning trips to play at the Roundhouse in London - Mohato Lekena, otherwise known as Wildebeats is shaping up to be one of Cape Town’s most prolific talents. But don’t let these accolades fool you, Mohato remains well grounded, with his head firmly screwed on his shoulders.

Sean Magner of PLATFORM went to chat to him.

Sean Magner: By way of introduction, if you had to describe yourself in two tweets (we all know 140 characters isn’t enough), how would you do so?

Wildebeats: I’m first and foremost a computer scien-tist who works on making music software - it’s what I’ve been doing for the last while. I also use music software to produce stuff and to DJ.

S: Was the music that you started making influ-enced by the music you were exposed to through meeting people, or were you into some pretty left–field stuff to begin with?

Page 19: Rocking the Daisies online magazine

W: That’s a good question! I don’t even know what I was listening to at the time I started Wildebeats, but it’s probably something that I wouldn’t consider to be very good now. I remember my first set back in 2011, it was okay, it was electronic stuff: a bunch of Hudson Mohawke, Lunice, and Jacques Green. I don’t even know, it’s crazy how naïve I was at the time.

I was probably influenced most by Wonky and Purple – the stuff com-ing out of Glasgow like the precursor to what I guess we call trap rave today. Guys like Hudson Mohawke, Rustie and some Joker stuff. Ah it’s crazy to think back to then, I had no idea what I was doing. I guess it’s all down to experimental chemistry.

S: So did you start producing because you were listening to more and more dance music?

W: I would usually just make some beats and email them to a few peo-ple and it slowly progressed from there. If anything it was a fun project to make up bad puns to name my tracks. I guess I’ve got to stop that now, the more seriously you take yourself, the more seriously people take you. Who knows, my next track me be named “Aqueous Descent Through Mystic Thyme” [laughs].

“GUESS I’M FIRST AND FOREMOST A COMPUTER SCIENTIST...”

CARD ON SPOKES

CARD ON SPOKES

Q&A WITH

Having grown up in Port Elizabeth, Shane Cooper moved to Cape Town to study jazz. However, blurring the lines has always been a preference for him. Beat making in his spare time has now evolved into Card On Spokes - one of the country’s most treasured electronic producers.

Matt Rightford of PLATFORM caught up with him to find out more about his musical journey and what everyone can expect from his set at Rocking The Daisies.

Page 21: Rocking the Daisies online magazine

Matt Rightford: Where were you in your life, musically, when you made the decision to start producing electronic music over and above your jazz commitments?

I finished studying Jazz and all of a sudden I had all this time on my hands and I realised that it was something I could actually take on seriously and make as big a thing out of it as my bass playing was.

MR: As a student, what experiences did you have with electronic music – in terms of active listening and going out?

COS: My oldest brother had moved to Cape Town and was a drum ‘n bass DJ. He was playing with all the Homegrown guys, so he would come back to P.E. with all these amazing records and I would just tape everything. I would go to as many gigs as possible.

MR: What can people look forward to at your Rocking The Daisies performance?

COS: A live interpretation of some old tracks as well as the premiere of a few new tracks. I’m going to have an extended ensemble which includes Lee Thomson on trumpet, Bokani Dyer on synthesizer and vocalist Bonj Mpanza. So there will be five vocal tracks and then the rest instrumental with me playing my usual keys and synthesizers.

“I would just tape everything. I would go to as many gigs as possible.”

Page 34: Rocking the Daisies online magazine

What was the most awkward joke you’ve ever told, and did you get the reaction you were hoping for?

Most recently, I was trying to loosen up a swanky dinner event so I told Patricia de Lille to her face that she over-cooked her photo on the “I have a drug problem” billboards. She looks so sad it’s like her drug problem is her dealer won’t return her calls. Collective gasp followed by belly laughs: mission accomplished.

Who are the rising comedic talents that stand out for you?

Yaseen Barnes, Bradford Keen, Westley Cockrill, Stuart Cairns, Oliver Booth.

You’ve performed at Rocking the Daisies for a few years now and hosted the #MainStage in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Which year in particular was your favourite?

Tough call! 2008 was a hoot but you’ll never get me to say why in writing. In 2011 I partied myself so broken on Saturday I spent the whole day Sunday floating on my air mattress in the dam - best day ever. That said, maybe because it’s so fresh in my mind, the Hives

last year was possibly the best live act I’ve ever seen. Like I said, tough call. 2008, 2011 and 2013. In particular.

Other than performing obviously, what do you look forward to most about going to Daisies?

Cloof wine estate. The venue itself is gorgeous but I love walking past a random spot and being viscerally reminded of who and what happened right there at Daisies past.

You’re photographed a lot with a slinky. What’s the deal there?

I love old school toys, especially if they just rely on physics. There is no better feeling than making it to the bottom of the stairs! Well, ok maybe there is: I found a classic 70’s heavy steel slinky at a yard sale two weeks ago and almost had a fatal joygasm. My time with them may be coming to a close though... I went to taste Maynard James Keenan’s wine in Jerome Arizona and happened upon the world’s biggest kaleidoscope shop. I took one with me to Burning Man and haven’t picked up a slinky since.

You know there are always single guys roaming around Daisies looking for a squeeze. Tell us, any one-liners or pick up lines that might help them get lucky?

“What’s the difference between an erection and a Ferrari?” then lean in real close and softly whisper “I don’t have a Ferrari...”

GREENPOP // // How many trees are you looking to contribute to the #RTD2014 environment this year?

We’re looking at raising 500+ trees through the trees for tickets campaign we are running in partnership with Rocking the Daisies this year.

// What encouraged you to get involved with RTD?

The founders of Greenpop have always appreciated that RTD is on a mission to make festival going more of a positive thing, encouraging all aspects of the event to be more sustainable and have less of an impact on our environment while also using some great messaging to get people amped on making a positive decision. We resonate with this and thus it’s been a great fit from the start.

// What has been the most exciting element of being involved with the RTD festival?

We love running the Hemp Stage and Green Village! It’s been getting bigger each year, while at the same time it’s a really epic space that I consider to be the calm out of the storm. I think people need a place that’s not as big and manic as the rest of the fest.

// So far you have planted 40002 trees. That’s a massive amount! What has the journey been like and do you have any great stories to share from along the way?

It’s been one massive adventure. We have grown faster then I could have ever imagined. It’s largely due to people in the Cape Town. We love to activate people by hosting Reforestation Festivals and various other events.

// What do you think about RTD’s greening initiatives as a whole?

I’m excited to see that event companies are taking the necessary steps to ensure sustainability is met. RTD is taking active steps to try and take action on all the various levels of making the event green. It’s a big task and will always need refining and developing. It’s an inspiration to see that they are doing their part.

// Do you have anything to say to the RTD festivalgoers?

Stay off the grass (jokes)! When packing, think about your packaging. Think about what you really need to survive. We all consume so much over such a short period of time and so much waste is generated. Rather recycle it at home and bring only what you need for the weekend.

We had a chat to Greenpop Director, Misha Teasdale, about going green.
