RobustnessDefinition:

Places which cab be used for many different purposes offer their users more choice than places whose design limits them to a single fixed use. Environments which offer this choice have a quality we call robustness

A robust place, whether outdoors or indoors, has many possible uses. A robustbuilding’s function can change over time.

The whole building can take on a new use, or function, an industrial warehouse, for example, can become new office space. Or a small space within a building can change use, such as a garage into a sitting room.

Design for alteration:

Make the place practicable to change as many as possible by designing the physical fabric so that it can easily be altered.

Outdoor spaces:

Outdoor spaces are the main source of various activities . So the maximum robustness should be utilize there.

Page 9: Robustness in urban design

Garden Space:

To increase the robustness of the surrounding building ,Garden space can also play an important role.

Designing the edge of the space:

The edge between buildings & public space must be designed to enable a range of outdoor public activities

Page 12: Robustness in urban design

The three key factors whichsupport long term robustness:Building depth—should be reduced for ventilation

Height-suitable height, upper floor is less suitable for robustnessAccess-need links to the outside

Building Types:

Pedestrian Activity:Seating can take the form of chairs or benches as the pedestrian activity.Where places are wide & less vehicular activity, these types of

spaces can be used.

Vehicular Activity:

A major activity in public spaces is vehicle circulation. We have to design so that vehicle do not A major activity in public spaces is vehicle circulation. We have to design so that vehicle do not inhibit other users of the space.
