Roundtable: Accounts Payable: Loss Leader or Strategic Partner

Is your accounts payable team focused on just paying the bills or helping you to manage cash better? How you answer that question will have an impact on business performance and earnings per share.

In this roundtable discussion, we’ll examine new business potential from networked payables by exploring:

• How your AP team spends most of its time, and what that means to your business

• How your income statement may hide tens to hundreds of millions of dollars in excess costs, and how you can stop it

• Techniques to earn double-digit, risk free returns on cash

• Opportunities to free up working capital by improving DPO

His team’s mission is to understand the challenges facing modern financial, operational, and sales performance management practices and the application of technology to drive breakthrough analytic results in performance, governance, risk, and compliance processes. With over twenty five years in accounting, corporate finance, and enterprise software he is responsible for sharing the depth and breadth of IBM Analytic solutions to solve problems and deliver results. Doug is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a Certified Public Account.   He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin. He's held senior positions in accounting, finance and enterprise software at Cognos, Closedloop (now Lawson), Hyperion, Arbor Software, and Alcar (all now part of Oracle). He was a CPA with Price Waterhouse in Chicago.

Finally, Doug is also a husband, a father to two terrific daughters, and an Ironman-distance triathlete.

What Can CFOs Learn From the Toughest Endurance Bike Race on Earth?

In June, Doug and IBM jumped into a race follow vehicle to make an unheralded, two week long ultra cycling race called the Race Across America a proving ground for taking “fitness to first” for 3x top American finisher Dave Haase. Dave completed the 3,000 mile course that crosses 4 mountain ranges and 170,000 feet of vertical feet from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean in just 8 days and 20 hours. The fastest time in more than 15 years by an American. Dave and IBM demonstrated that NOW is the right time for real-time analytics, that you can create your own luck with foresight born from great modeling, predictive analytics, and decision optimization all on the “Cloud”, and affirmed that “it’s as easy as riding a bike” will never mean the same thing again. Attend this presentation to put these lessons to work to transform your contribution to your enterprise. It’s easier than you think to begin today with a dynamic, analytically advanced performance management system to steer business execution more effectively. Turn your organization’s fitness into first.

Securing Unrealized Potential for your Company

This presentation will focus on methods and structures that effectively convert millions of dollars in   Landlord/Investor profits created from your company’s facility lease NOI obligations and strong credit standing, into cash and/or credits allocated directly back to your organization. These specific strategies and structures are   materially increasing EBITDA and profitabil ity to mid-size organizations throughout the country. Actual case studies will be shared along with additional strategies and contract negotiat ion approaches that produce “unrealized” cash allocations, credits, economic incentives, direct lease cost reductions and profit participation, often measuring in the tens of millions of dollars.

Developing Finance Competencies for 2020

CEB found that less than 1% of finance staff have the competencies required for high-quality business support. This fact, coupled with lower staff engagement, a geographically dispersed workforce, and changing employee preferences, has led many finance leaders to reevaluate their finance talent strategy. This breakout workshop will discuss the core pillars of a leading finance talent strategy for 2020. First, we will review and discuss the Finance 2020 Competencies that CEB has shown will drive finance team effectiveness over the next five years (e.g., business challenger capabilities, technology skills, social intelligence, and advanced analytics). We will then look at which technical and non-technical behaviors matter most and which competencies are better bought than built. Second, we will look at how leading Finance teams have sourced analytic staff from alternative talent pools, improved Finance staff engagement through dynamic career-pathing, and introduced new training methodologies for Millennial staff.

Dennis GannonPrincipal Executive AdvisorCEB

Teaching finance and math to at-risk youth in an alternative school setting proved to be an effective staging ground for Dennis Gannon’s career helping to educate corporate finance leaders on how they can best stay ahead of the market. Dennis, an executive advisor at CEB, notes that despite the different audiences the approach is basically the same: keep participants focused on their long-term vision in the face of ongoing, short-term distractions. Dennis’ finance expertise places him squarely in the middle of the biggest challenge facing public companies today: making effective capital allocation decisions in a slow-growth environment.

Finance 2020 - Closing the Guidance Gap

Most finance teams continue to contend with a "Guidance Gap" - an inability to meet the demands the business has for insightful financial analysis. This longstanding problem is being exacerbated by a key planning and resource allocation failure in Finance itself: the effective outsourcing of critical management processes to external vendors and internal partners like HR.Finance 2020   is CEB’s research into how corporate finance leaders and their teams are developing and executing long term plans for the function.
