What is the Value of Talent Management in Internal Audit? An organization’s internal audit function plays a key role in the risk management process.  The more common of these roles includes championing the establishment of an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process, assisting in the development and maintenance of the ERM framework, facilitating the identification and assessment of risk, evaluating the risk management process, and providing assurance as to the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls.  This session will outline the value of having a robust talent management process in the internal audit function and how such a robust process improves the risk management process of the organization via better risk identification, mitigation, and outcomes.

This presentation wil l focus on building SMaRT infrastructure (Systematic Monitoring and Reconciliation Tools) for risk management purposes.  As a case study, we will review how the continuous capability for monitoring credit risk data improved the quality of risk decisions and our ability to evaluate the institution’s risk profile.   The purpose of SMaRT is to identify data integrity exceptions in systems of record, send notifications for remediation of the exceptions and then track the exceptions unti l corrected.   Systematic Monitoring and Reconciliation is a foundat ional component of a bank ’s r isk data infrastructure and SMaRT continues to serve that purpose at BBVA Compass.

Building a Risk CultureBuilding a strong risk culture entails educating up and down and interchangeable roles to achieve organizational goals and objectives. A robust risk culture equates to a sustained competitive advantage as a company must address protecting the safety and security of employees and guests/products, drive operational and financial efficiencies, preserve brand reputation, and proactive risk planning and response. Additionally, changing risk culture and behaviors involves reinforcement and monitoring. Therefore, today’s risk practitioner is a key strategic business partner possessing intimate knowledge of the business and industry, embodying a broad-based operational perspective.
