Dear Customers and Potential Customers,

The cull bull market is hot, hot, hot – $1.30-$1.60 per pound! In the

last month, we personally know two producers that sold cull bulls for more

than $3,000! Sell your old model and invest in our genetics. Our farm has been in busi-

ness since 1954 and this is our 16th year selling bulls and offering the Ridge-

field Bull Deal. We make our entire living from the cattle and beef business

– everything from conception to consumption. We are a seedstock producer,

raise cattle and sell beef, all grown on our farm.

We breed for structural soundness, calving ease, heavy weaning weights and heifers that are

fertile, have great udders and produce enough milk for a calf to express its genetic potential. We

don’t own a hoof trimming table and won’t sell a bull with bad feet. We have a very good set of bulls

in this offering, representing Angus, Braunvieh, BraunAngus and SimAngus. Even though these

bulls suffered through an extremely cold and wet winter and their yearling weights suffered some,

they are stout, hardened up and ready to put with cows. The bulls are moderate-framed, and will be

easy calving and produce excellent females. One thing that we are doing different this year is offering bulls split two ways. The bulls listed

with the Brasstown Beef logo by their side, “Brasstown Elite”, are the ones from which we will offer

our Bull Deal, buying the calves from them, paying a premium.

All of the bulls offered have been thoroughly tested, including a breeding soundness exam,

standard performance measurements, ultrasound and measured for feed intake. We believe in and

love EPDs, and we also like providing the real data to match up with the EPDs!

For the first time this year, we are also offering a beautiful set of commercial Angus heifers,

“The Brasstown Babes.” These girls are docile, have been pelvic measured and ultrasounded, and are

100% AI bred to curve-bending, calving ease Angus bulls. You can build a whole program around

them and the calves they will produce. As we have been doing for the past two years, in addition to our own stock, we are pleased to

offer a number of bulls produced by friends of ours with whom we have had long relationships:

Robert Williams of WW Cattle Company, and Tim and Blake Bagley, owners of Bagley Farms.

Brasstown Beef, our branded line of beef, is available in Whole Foods Market stores through-

out the south from Jackson, Miss., to Charleston, S.C., and in Ingles Markets in Georgia, western

N.C., and upstate South Carolina. Brasstown Beef is also distributed by Buckhead Beef and Sysco

to fine restaurants and meat markets from Hilton Head Island, S.C., to New Orleans, La., and from

Knoxville, Tenn., to Nashville, Tenn. Every piece of beef that we sell comes from an animal that

either originated from our herd or the herds of producers who buy our bulls and sell us their calves

via the Ridgefield Farm Bull Deal. The premiums that we pay for calves are $50-$75 per head more

than if sold through conventional channels. And, I have a very special introduction to make; Adam Speegle, our new Farm Manager!

Adam comes to us with an Animal Science degree from Auburn; and lots of cattle and row crop

A sleep-easy calving ease prospect, this Regis son posted a 66-pound birthweight and ranks in the top 2% of the Angus breed for calving ease and the top 25% for weaning weight. A full brother was the top-selling bull in the Fall 2012 Mystic Hill Farms sale, selling for $9,250. It’s hard to find calving ease genetics packaged like this. Calving ease genetics at their best.

Another embryo calf from Focus on Profit. Wow! He has it all; explosive, very efficient gain. He has the highest ADG in the sale with a ratio of 143%, and is among the most feed efficient, with a ratio of 122%. The sticking point; he is not registered because he is an embryo calf from a donor cow (even though she is registered) that we failed to get “blood typed,” which is a hard rule of the AAA. That is why there are no EPD’s. Rest assured, however, that you won’t find a better bull in this sale, or anywhere else, to use on your commercial cows.

He ranks in the top 3% of the Angus breed for weaning weight, top 10% for yearling weight, top 10% for carcass weight, and top 20% for $B. He had the highest IMF of all bulls in the sale. He was only 11 ½ months old when the photo was taken, and wow, what a bull he has grown into!

He also has wonderful IMF, ranking him 5th among all bulls in the sale, and a big ribeye per cwt, ranking him tied for first place with five other bulls in the sale. He will make you some dandy heifers and great steers!

General Sale InformationEPDs and Supplemental Information

All cattle data, EPDs and supplemental information were correct when the sale catalog was published. Additional information will be provided as a supplement on www.ridgefieldfarm.net by April 11, and in print on sale day.

Braunvieh EPDs are calculated using the Multibreed Evaluation Model with Angus as the standard base.

Breed Average EPDsBreed averages listed below for a comparison of individual

sale animal EPDs to breed at-large EPDs.

Residual Feed Intake (RFI)Ridgefield Farm utilizes a GrowSafe System to obtain actual

feed intake data across a 70-day test period. RFI is the difference between actual intake and expected intake (calculated based upon the age, size, gain and sex of a given animal utilizing academically accepted metabolic formulas).

Cattle consuming less than expected feed are given negative values and those consuming more than expected are given positive values. The RFI data is then used in connection with the current cost of feed to calculate the actual increase or decrease in the cost of feed for each animal during the testing period.

In studies conducted by the University of West Virginia and the University of Missouri, heifers were retained from low RFI bulls for two successive generations. Both studies found that these low RFI sired females provided a significant opportunity to increase stocking rates from 12% in lactating cows to 20% for dry ones. Imagine being able to increase your calf crop by a minimum of 12% from the same land. Perhaps the best news is that long-term studies have found no antagonisms to other traits.

Under our Bull Deal, we typically offer a premium of at least 6¢ per pound more than markets for similar cattle.
