Gaffney Game Changer

Gaffney Game On

HerbsterReference Dam

The $175,000 mother of Gaffney Game Changer and Gaffney Game On. She is the #1

birth-to-yearling spread cow in the Angus breed.

When RB Lady Standard 305-890 was purchased in the winter of 2014 for $175,000, we knew the impact her birth-to-yearling spread paired with our “power” bulls would create. She ranks as the No. 1 cow with a .73 accuracy for birth-to-yearling spread. A full sister to RB Active Duty, “890” has produced over $2,500,000 in progeny sales, all because of her predictable genomic profiles and exceptional actual performance data. She has far exceeded our expectations in just one calf crop, producing a phenomenal set of calves no matter what bull she is paired with. She is the mother of our calving ease sires, the $275,000 Gaffney Game Changer and the $250,000 Gaffney Game On.

RB Lady Standard 305-890 is a total package cow, possessing EPDs that rank in the top 1% of current dams for CED, BW, WW, YW, CEM, Milk, $W and $F. She also ranks in the top 10% of the breed for Docility, $YG and $B. Her progeny perform the way her numbers read. She is also an amazing individual phenotypically; she’s smooth, long-sided and complete, standing on a big foot. Massively ribbed, she is as thick as you can make an Angus cow without giving up maternal merit. She is the most fertile cow in the Angus breed; in 15 months she produced 169 No. 1 embryos in five consecutive natural flushes.

The bull prospects out of “890” offered in this sale are destined to make their mark on this industry. They are the first offspring to be offered crossing the calving ease and growth of RB Lady Standard 305-890 and the power of our Schaff Angus Valley sires! The results are magic on this cross. RB Lady Standard 305-890 is the dam of Lots 1A-E and Lots 2A-2F.

Lot 1A

We have searched for calving ease to yearling spread bulls that can rival the bulls offered in Lot 1; to date we have not located any prospects that can compete with the overall number profiles, HD50K data and heritage of this set of bulls! A pinnacle of Angus achievement for Herbster Angus Farms, the mating of the $175,000RB Lady Standard 305-890 to the $35,000 valuation Herbster Sportsman has produced amazing results. The flush is packed with bulls and females with every desirable trait including disposition, style and efficiency. With moderate CED and BW EPDs, they rival their growth and power contemporaries for overall mass, substance and power. Pick and choose through this truly unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the flush that will change the way we look at Angus calving ease bulls forever.

Chairman has been a favorite of the farm crew since birth. His WW, YW, Milk, $W and $F all rank in the top 1% for non-parent sires. His BW, HP, CW, and $B all rank in the top 2%. Smooth and long, this bull has a massive top and hind quarter. Possessing an actual birth weight of 67 lbs, he will be a serious contender for the “top-seller” honor in this sale. Backed by the immortal RB Lady Standard 305-890, Chairman has the number profile, actual performance and HD50K data to mark him as a serious producer in semen revenue sales. He is extremely docile and heifer approved.

Congressman has more rib shape than any other bull in the offering. He has a moderate birth weight EPD ranking in the top 4% of non-parent sires. Congressman has a very desirable EPD spread with WW, YW, $W and $F all in the top 1%. He has the second-highest CED EPD in the offering at +16.

Herbster Guardsman 5411C Birth Date: 2/8/15 Reg: +18086276PF50

Tattoo: 541

Guardsman is the true power bull of this flush. He posted an actual weaning weight of 1002 lbs and ADJ YW of 1560 lbs to ratio 111. This makes him the heaviest and fastest-growing bull of the Sportsman sired 890 flushmates. Rugged and powerful in his design, Guardsman also has an exquisite EPD and genomic profile, ranking in the top 1% of non-parent sires for WW, YW, Milk, CW, $W, $F and $B. He possesses the highest WW, YW and $W EPD in the offering and the third highest $B EPD. Look for him to improve number profiles while adding pounds at weaning and a very gentle disposition to your calf crop. Selling 1/2 revenue sharing interest and shared possession.

Kingsman has always been one to watch in this group. As a baby, he was a standout, and was a calf many visitors picked out as the top bull of the flush. He is long and attractive, with an excellent front and clean lines. When Kingsman matures, he may be the best bull of the flush. Like his flush brothers, he ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires for WW, YW, $W, $F and in the top 3% for CED, CEM, CW and $B.

Very moderate at birth with an actual 68 lb birth weight, Bondsman is a calving ease specialist with an exceptional HD50K profile. He ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires for CED, BW, CEM and $W. Moderate in stature, this bull could be used on heifers for years to come. Bondsman has the highest CED and CEM EPD in the offering at +18 and +17. Bondsman also has the lowest BW EPD at minus 3.5.

We continue to marvel at the excellence of our herd sire, SAV Pursuit. He is a maternal sensation and proven herd sire. He has a powerful phenotype, outstanding structure and feet quality, a superb disposition and large scrotal size. His male progeny have excelled in every facet of the growth process by coming easy, growing fast and commanding top prices at sale time. His daughters are especially feminine with a beautiful maternal look and impeccable udder quality.

His mother, our $375,000 record-selling herd matron SAV Abigale 5650, is an industry benchmark for maternal greatness and records a weaning ratio of 106 on six natural calves. She ranks among the top income-producing cows in our donor battery and has generated over $750,000 in direct progeny sales. Never before have we thought enough of a cow to add so many sons to our herd bull battery! We purchased SAV Fieldmaster, SAV Recruit, SAV Pursuit, and SAV Positive to improve the maternal strength of our herd. She is a maternal sister to SAV Bismarck and to the $150,000 SAV Mandan. Pursuit is the Sire of Lots 2A-2F, 3A & 3B, 8, 10A-10D, and 30.

A “never before” mating of the growth and power of Pursuit and the calving ease merit of “890” has produced unique Angus treasures that we offer as Lot 2. Growthy and attractive, these bulls have been a joy to watch develop. They are certain to add excellent maternal traits to their progeny, as they contain two of the breed’s icons for maternal merit in their pedigree, SAV Abigale 5650 and RB Lady Standard 305-890. Both cows have produced exceptional direct progeny sales, “890” at $2,500,000 and “5650” at $750,000. A bull from this flush has unlimited earning potential, genetics to impact generations in the future and phenotype to make any cattleman proud.

Possessing a +13 CED EPD and a moderate 79 lb actual birth weight, Businessman can be utilized on heifers. His growth numbers suggest that progeny born out of first-calf heifers will be very competitive with their bigger birth weight contemporaries; thus, giving his future owner the ability to not sacrifice pounds out of first-time mothers. Ranking third for actual weaning weight in the 2015 calf crop at 1020 lbs to ratio 112, Businessman is an outstanding bull. He has the highest HP EPD in the offering at +20.5, which predicts that his daughters will be as fertile as their famous grand dam. Businessman ranks in the top 1% for WW, HP, Milk and $W EPD. He also ranks in the top 5% for CED, CEM, $F and YW.

Herbster Sandman 5102B Birth Date: 2/2/15 Reg: +18086268PF50

Tattoo: 510

Sandman is everything that commercial producers want in a performance herd sire! Possessing an excellent birth-to-yearling spread EPD profile, he is great hipped, superior fronted and sound. He is the longest-sided bull in the sale. Having an actual WW of 1000 lbs and ratioing 105, Sandman has the performance to back up his number profile. Like his brother, Businessman, he has the ability to produce calves out of first-calf heifers that weigh just as much as the calves out of mature cows, which means that critical first calf isn’t wasted on lower performing, calving ease genetics. Sandman ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires for CED, WW, CEM and $W. He ranks in the top 2% for YW. Selling ½ revenue sharing interest and shared possession. Like his brothers, Committeeman is another moderate birth weight

option and recommended for heifers. He weighed an actual 72 lbs at birth, grew well and had an actual 930 lb weaning weight to ratio 103. Committeeman ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires for CED, $W and Milk and in the top 2% for WW.

Another phenotypically impressive bull, Councilman is the softest middled bull of this flush. Big-topped and heavy made, he has the smoothness of his dam paired with the stretch and style of Pursuit. Councilman had an impressive 1018 lb actual weaning weight to ratio 111 and was the fourth heaviest bull in the entire 2015 bull calf crop at weaning. He ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires at weaning for WW, HP, Milk and $W and in the top 2% for YW and CEM.

Draftsman has a very moderate actual birth weight of 73 lbs paired with excellent spread EPDs with a yearling weight number in the top 3% of non-parent sires. Carrying the genetics of his famous sire and dam, this bull will pass along the desirable traits of fleshing ability, extreme growth, fertility and functionality to his offspring. He is heifer safe.

Rugged-made and sound-footed, Crewman ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires for WW, Milk and $W. A more moderate YW EPD bull, he will work well in harsh Sand Hills environments where a smaller cow size is needed. Progeny of the “890” cow family are as fertile and efficient as they come.

How much can you afford to pay for a bull? At Herbster Angus Farms commercial and registered breeders deserve the best possible genetics and functional phenotype for today and into the future. Along with outstanding genetics, our goal is to help educate our customers on performance indicators. When selecting premium, genetic tested and EPD verified Angus bulls, we take in account their EPDs and $ values. Are these bulls worth the extra money? The research shouts an enthusiastic YES!

We will use the old timer rule of thumb, which is 4 to 5 times the price of a feeder calf, as our base bull price.

4 X a 500 lb feeder calf ($2.05 per lb) = $4110

The following examples are based on a scenario in which a bull breeds 25 cows per year for 4 years resulting in 100 progeny over his lifespan.

A high weaning weight EPD is a factor when selecting a bull. Our Lot 1C bull, Herbster Guardsman 541, has a WW EPD in the top 1% of non-parent sires. The average WW EPD for non-parent sires is +50. With a BW EPD of +81, his calves are projected to weigh 31lbs more at weaning than the average Angus bull. Over four years, the difference is 3100 total lbs.

(31 lbs X 100 head) X $2.05 = $6355

Bull buyers should also look to the $ indexes for insights on added value. The $ indexes are used to estimate what calves will be worth out of a certain parent at weaning ($W), post weaning ($F), when sold on the grid ($G, $QG, and $YG) and total index ($B). Herbster Angus bulls with high ranking $B indexes can increase earning potential. Herbster Sportsman 551, the Lot 23 bull, has a $B EPD of +182.38 which ranks in the top 1% ofnon-parent sires for $B EPD. The average $B EPD for non-parent sires is +106.39. Producers can expect to gain $75.99 per head when selling their calves at post weaning. Upon siring 100 calves,Herbster Sportsman 551 has the potential to earn a premium of $7599.

In summary, the data speaks for itself:

Calculations for Lot 1C using only the base price,WW EPD and $B EPD: $4110 (base “old timer” price) + $3100 (+31 WW X 100)+ $7400 (+74 $B x 100) = = $14,610

The track record of Sandpoint Blackbird 8809 is unparalleled when talking about herd bull production, performance traits and carcass merit. She has produced three natural calves that have a BW ratio of 94, WW ratio of 116 and a YW ratio of 105. Progeny sales by “8809” have exceeded $4,000,000 in the last five years on over 40 head. She is the mother of VAR Generation 2100, VAR Index 3282, Vintage Commander 4152, VAR Ranger 3008, VAR Foreman 3339, VAR Complete 1209 and VAR Reserve 1111. The bulls that will sell as Lot 3A & 3B provide a mountain of revenue generating potential both at-stud and in-herd. Herbster Platinum 509 has the most potential of all bulls in this year’s sale to be an outlier for ribeye area. His sire, SAV Pursuit, and his dam, Sandpoint Blackbird 8809, are known to produce progeny with a large ribeye. His ribeye EPD is the largest in the offering at +1.18 and his genomic data places him in the elite top 11% of the breed for REA. Moderate, big-ribbed and docile, we can say for certain that “509” has the most muscle and mass of any 8809 bull that we have had the pleasure to see. He is unique to his dam and will be a sale feature. He ranks in the top 1% of non-parent sires for Milk and REA EPD; the top 5% of the breed for WW, CW, $W and $B; and the top 10% for YW, CEM, MW, Marb and $QG.

Strong-topped and neat-patterned, “519” is one of those bulls that sorts himself to the top of the bull crop quite easily. As sound as you can make a bull that still has a ton of mass, “519” is excellent fronted and functional in his design. He is very reminiscent of his maternal brother, VAR Generation 2100, only we believe he is more massive in his makeup and softer in his design. Also having a large REA EPD of +1.10, this bull will pass on carcass traits readily to his progeny. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for REA EPD; the top 2% for Milk, MW; and the top 5% for WW, YW, CW and $B. The revenue potential on this young bull could be monumental.

The oldest yearling bull in the offering, Herbster Pilgrim 502 combines two Angus families: the Emblynettes and the Abigales. It was only natural to take the power and softness of SAV International, and mate him to our maternal masterpiece, SAV Abigale 5650. Attractive in his design and powerful in his performance, “502” is much like his famous sire. He ranks in the top 5% of the breed for WW, YW, CW and $F while ranking in the top 4% of non-parent sires for $B. “502” is a smart buy for breeders looking to add maternal excellence without sacrificing pounds at weaning.

One of the top donor cows to be bred at Herbster Angus Farms, HF Blackcap May 0102 has been a “no-miss” donor. “0102” is a masterful producer of performance and genomic excellence without sacrificing phenotype. She is the mother of the $35,000 valuation Herbster Sportsman who was the second-highest-selling lot in our 2013 sale, going to Carl Dethlefs and Sons, NE. She was also responsible for the top seller in last year’s sale, the $15,000 Herbster Sythe 4153, who sold to David Igo, MO. “0102” produced the Class 22 Bred and Owned heifer winner at the 2015 National Junior Angus Show, Herbster Blackcap May 4135, who possesses an incredible +174.05 $B number. She is proof you can produce a competitive animal with great numbers! Perfect uddered and exceptional on conformation, “0102” is an ideal Angus cow with superb actual performance data, ranking in the top 1% of current dams for Milk and $B. She also ranks in the top 3% of current dams for YW, MH and $F. Not just a trophy cow, she can raise a calf with merit, posting 2WR@119, 2YR@114, 10IMF@103 and 12REA@106. Direct progeny out of this cornerstone female sell as Lot 7, 8, 9A & 9B.

SAV Ringmaster, our herd sire, was the $300,000 highest-selling and No.1 yearling weight bull of the 2012 Schaff Angus Valley Sale. We selected him for his impressive 205-day weight of 986 to ratio 113 that put him in the top four indexing bulls in the 2011 SAV calf crop. His Emblynette dam is a heavy-milking, top-producing cow with ratios of 5WW@111 and 4YW@110. The SAV Ringmaster calves have been standouts for growth and pounds at weaning in our herd. Look for his progeny to grow bigger, faster and stronger than any other sire group. Packed with performance, he will add more frame score to his progeny. Sire of Lot 11.

A sale feature, this bull is out of a cow that is a full sibling in blood to the mother of SAV International, SAV Emblynette 5483. “6572,” like her famous sister, is a stellar producer with exceptional fertility and superior udder and feet quality. She balances a BR of 7@93 with a WR of 7@101. Multiple daughters have been kept in the Herbster Angus Farms herd with many featured embryo progeny retained. Her prolific Pathfinder dam continues in production at 19 years of age in the Schaff Angus Valley program. “Equity” weighed a moderate 81 lbs at birth and raced to an actual 980 lbs at weaning to ratio 103.

SAV Property was our $65,000 selection of the 2014 SAV Sale. He is an extremely docile bull with a superb structure and attractive look. He combines those qualities with the softness, volume and fleshing ability for a real cow maker. His first calves came light and grew fast! He ratioed well in the Herbster Angus Farms herd, posting an average weaning ratio of 105. The bull calves are great structured and clean sheathed. We anxiously await our second calf crop of SAV Property progeny this spring. Backed by the productive Polly cow family, he will increase dollars gained on bull calves at weaning and femininity in his heifer progeny for a lifetime. Sire of Lots 13 and 20.

SAV Harvestor, our $275,000 Angus sensation, is a true breed changer and performance powerhouse. He has no equal among all proven sires in the Angus breed for performance and real beef value. This has been documented in many large commercial and purebred herds. Harvestor progeny are stamped with breed character and built right from the ground up. They are perfect in their structure, with massive thickness, volume and expressive muscle shape. His sons are loaded with performance and substance, while his daughters are feminine with beautiful udders and added dimension to make real brood cows. The Lot 18 bull, Herbster Interstate 504, is a huge-ribbed, gentle giant. We call him “Dog” because he follows you like one. Mandy would be lying if she didn’t say he was one of her favorites. Reminding us of his sire and grandsire, Interstate is large hipped, perfect footed and smooth. His Pathfinder mother is a beautiful Sitz Upward daughter, and has been a great herd bull producer for us. She raised a sale feature in the 2013 sale, selling for $6400 and going to Wilde Angus, MN. She also produced a $5000 bull in the 2014 sale that went to Ray Kopecky, NE. She has amazing ratios of 4BW@97, 4WW@109, 4YW@108, 4IMF@100 and 4REA@103. Herbster Interstate 504 ranks in the top 1% for non-parent sires for YW and CW; the top 2% for WW; and the top 4% for Milk, $F and $B. Selling 1/2 revenue sharing interest and shared possession.

One of the first bulls to be offered out of our $65,000 herd sire, SAV Property, Estate is smooth and powerful in his design. He traces to the ever popular and valuable Blackcap family. Out of a first-calf heifer, he had an actual BW of 71 lbs to ratio 92. He exploded to an actual weaning weight of 924 lbs to ratio 106. Our cows are sorted into groups according to calf age and sex, so his mother went head-to-head with the mature cows and came out of the fire triumphant. Estate ranks in the top 10% of non-parent sires for WW, YW, $W and $F.

Herbster Serviceman 544 has worked his way to the top of the calf crop for many reasons. He is attractive in his conformation, powerful and has a great disposition. He obtained an actual WW of 980 lbs to ratio 109. When Ed and Charles picked out the mother of this lot, Cherry of Conanga 2475, as their selection for the 2013 $110,000 Foundation Heifer Donation from Connealy Angus, they had a great feeling about her future. They did well! She has been a top-notch individual for revenue and performance. Her first son by Connealy United sold to Acres Away Farm, GA, for $10,000, and she has amassed 2WW@105 and 2YW@102. Bred early for her 2016 calf, we expect her to Pathfinder this year. “544” has EPDs that rank in the top 10% of non-parent sires for WW, YH, SC, Milk, CW, RE and $B.

Herbster Angus Farms FemalesFemales at Herbster Angus Farms are genetically and phenotypically selected for udder structure, calving ease, fleshing ability, longevity, milking ability and growth. The donor females in our program contribute many of the genes that will be encompassed in the cattle that will sell as Angus-based replacements. They are the right kind of females to add profitability to your operation.

We will be selling approximately 40 head of Angus females either with calves at side or bred to calve to Registered Angus bulls. Most calves will be AI sired. A complete listing of the cows and cows with calves that sell on April 4th will be available at the sale. All females sell as “unregistered.” Registration papers will be available upon request for a $100 per head fee.

The Herbster Angus Farms program is built on honesty and value, from how we market and sell our cattle and semen, to the data turned into the American Angus Association. We package every straw of semen sold for $40 with 40 million cells per straw. The customer’s conception rate and herd betterment are always first in our mind.

“Our conception rate was excellent in our 2015 calf crop when using Herbster Angus Farms semen. The added concentration really pays off for customers like us. In 2016, we will have our 75th Anniversary sale in which we will be proud to offer progeny out of Herbster Angus Farms bulls. With the addition of those genetics, we think this is the best calf crop we’ve had in many years.”

~ 2014 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year,Gene Knop, Ida Grove, IA

“In our ET program, we experienced a 50% higher number of transferable embryos when switching to a Herbster Angus Farms herd sire. I am a believer in Herbster Angus Farms’ high-quality semen!”

~ Maben Larsen, Holden UT The International semen has yielded us superior conception rates in both our AI program and in embryo transfer, as well as with in vitro fertilization. We always end up with 10-15% higher conception rates compared to most sires collected at other studs. The International calves are absolutely outstanding here and everywhere he has been used.”

~ Kelly Schaff, St. Anthony, ND

“I would like to thank Herbster Angus Farms for exceptional service and quality genetics. My SAV International calves are truly outstanding. I have never seen a bull dominate the phenotype of his offspring like International. His combina-tion of quality, consistency and exceptional conception rate make him a very special bull that will make a lasting mark in my herd for years to come.”

by Clinton Laflin for Best of the West

Some may think the long hours of homework are over after graduation, but that is not the case at Herbster Angus Farms; homework is associated with every aspect of the operation. No sire or female is purchased or cow is bred without doing the proper homework to help make the best possible decisions. “Our philosophy has always been to acquire the best genetics available and then breed our Angus cattle to improve any weakness they possess,” says owner Charles W. Herbster.

A Look BAck Herbster Angus Farms, located near Falls City, Neb., was homesteaded in 1847 by Charles’ great-great-grandfather, William McKendry Maddox. In addition to 300 head of Angus cattle, the Herbsters raise corn, soybeans, wheat and dairy-quality alfalfa hay. Charles got his start in the Angus business at the age of 11 when his grandmother, Leta Meyers Carico, bought him 65 registered Angus cows. Having worked hard all of her life in the dairy industry, she realized the importance of responsibility, decision-making and business lessons that owning cattle would provide her grandson. She had no idea her initial investment would serve as the foundation of a world-recognized Angus herd. Charles and Judy Herbster established Herbster Angus Farms 20 years ago with the goal of owning and breeding elite registered Angus cattle. Ed and Mandy Raithel were hired as general managers to help the Herbsters accomplish this goal. They have worked on the farm, along with their daughter, Miranda, for the past 17 years. The Raithels share the same passion and love for cattle as the Herbsters, and together they have forged Herbster Angus

Farms into a powerful operation. A truly diverse operation, the Herbsters market genetics to Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen from around the world. The ranch currently has 15 bulls at North American Breeders, Inc., a bull stud located in Berryville, Va. Four of the 15 bulls carry the Herbster prefix, including Sportsman, Huntsman, Republic and Tabasco. An annual bull and female sale is held each spring, where superior Angus cattle and good people come together. The Herbsters’ 2016 production sale will be held Mon., April 4, at Marysville Livestock Auction, Marysville, Kan. The offering will include 55 Angus Bulls and 40 commercial females. The sale will feature cattle sired by SAV Harvestor, SAV International, SAV Pursuit, SAV Revere, SAV Property, SAV Fieldmaster, SAV Ringmaster, Herbster Sportsman, as well as their own ranch-raised herdsires.

the roAd to success “If you don’t have a road map, producing great cattle and making them excel is a challenge,” says Ed Raithel. “Once you know the type of cattle you want to base your program on, then you have a place to start.” The operation has developed a strict herd-management program that centers around practicality, longevity and profitability. Cows, calves, bulls and replacement heifers alike, must excel in defined Function Categories to be retained, sold or purchased by the Herbster program. These Function Categories include, but are not limited to: Feet and leg structure; fertility; udder quality; rib shape and overall body capacity; muscularity; longevity of the cow and her lineage; temperament; overall production record

he<Bste< A>gus fA<ms is of the individual; and the individual dam’s production record. While following this protocol may seem like going above and beyond the call of duty to some, it isn’t to Ed. “At Herbster Angus Farms, we don’t do average,” says Ed with a smirk and a chuckle. “Just ‘OK’ is not good enough.” Charles adds, “If you are going to do anything; give it your best.” The Herbsters strive to produce cattle that help their customers experience success. “When it comes to the cattle offered for sale, we always go forward with the goal in mind to improve our customers’ herds and ultimately the Angus breed,” explains Charles. While the registered breeder is one focus for the Herbsters, feedback from the commercial, cow-calf producer is another vital element that is key to the operation’s success. “Ultimately, we are helping our fellow seedstock producers and commercial cattlemen build better animals,” says Ed. “Each of our customer’s operations is unique. We strive to build lasting relationships with each in order to better understand how we can help them achieve their goals.” “Our goal is to provide excellent customer service; to give the customer more than they expect,” says Charles. “We want to make ourselves available to potential buyers and return customers. Then we can advise them about the genetics that will get them where they want to go even if it means advising them to find another sire elsewhere,” adds Ed. “When you do the right thing for the right reason, everyone wins!”

Looking to the future The Herbsters’ marketing goal is to represent the cattle correctly and honestly,

and lay a foundation for building long-term relationships with customers. “When customers call to purchase semen or ask about females, the cycle of ‘homework’ begins again,” says Charles. Charles and Ed are not afraid of change or trying something different. You can see this in many facets of the operation. One of the major decisions Charles made was to manage Herbster sires and market the semen in an unconventional manner. If he was going to invest in some of the best sires in the Angus breed, Charles was going to maintain ownership; choose where the bull was housed; the strength of the semen sold; and how the semen was marketed. Herbster Angus Farms’ Executive Vice President, Brittany E. Barker, in addition to Charles and the Raithels, talks to breeders almost daily. The team asks and answers questions to make sure each breeder requesting semen, for example, chooses the best sire to benefit his or her operation. They feel this strategy moves the customer closer to reaching their goals. “Our program is based on real cattle with performance integrity,” says Charles. “The program is built on honesty and value – from how we market and sell our cattle, to the data turned into the American Angus Association.” “Even with doing our homework, not every mating meets our expectations, not every sire purchased performs as we had expected,” says Charles. Instead of selling these animals to make back his investment, Charles chooses to take the loss for the good of the Angus breed. Charles adds, “We are committed not to pass unwanted genetics to unsuspecting breeders.” Visit www.herbsterangus.com for more about the operation at Herbster Angus Farms, as well as semen for sale on a number of herdsires.
