Dear families,
We trust our students had an enjoyable extended weekend. Our recent
Pupil Free Day was spent with neighbouring schools; Plympton, Plympton
International College and Cowandilla with a focus on formative assessment.
Put simply, formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that
teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension,
learning needs and academic progress.
This professional development is one part of LDAM, the Learning Design
Assessment and Moderation process, which every school in South Australia
is committed to. "If we create a culture where every teacher believes they need
to improve, not because they are good enough, but because they can be even bet-
ter, there is no limit to what we can achieve," Dylan Williams, University of Lon-
don
Learning intentions and success criteria are an important part of the teach-
ing and learning process. To help explain this we asked two of our students
for their own definitions;
“A learning intention can be checking to see if we are using a strategy like multi-
plying by 2 or 5” Jimi, Year 3
“Success criteria helps to show you how to be better at something” Hollie, Year 4
Our Intensive English Program teachers met with Cowandilla IELP staff and
discussed a range of educational matters including managing effective group
work, oral language, auditory processing, informal and formal language, nar-
rative genre , STEM learning and scientific language
days.
Today’s STEM Opening did not disappoint. After more than 2 years of plan-
ning, preparing and producing our school community and invited dignitaries
and guests were able to see the benefits of receiving STEM Works funding.
Across SA, there are 139 schools involved with 75,000 students benefitting
(45% of student population). Overall, it has been a state-wide $250m in-
vestment and we feel very fortunate to be one of the recipients.
We heard various speeches, watched the SU2 movie, were able to join
STEM activities with our stu-
dents and enjoyed a morning tea
together as a community. Hon
John Gardner MP, Minister for
Education was impressed with
our facilities and felt privileged
to be a part of the celebrations.
He also mentioned the high cali-
bre of teaching and learning at
Richmond PS; particularly our
recent 3D Printing Expo.

Saturday’s Successful Sausage Sizzle
Thank you to Sarah and Richard Piro for putting together such a smooth
running event. The “Piros”, who were aptly named the BBQ Bosses, oversaw
the preparation and entire day and we are incredibly grateful for the time
and energy.
This successful community effort and fundraiser will contribute over $2000 to
our school’s funds.

Recent staffing news. Clare MacDonald has recently been offered and accepted a finance
role at a northern school, closer to home, and sadly will not be returning to Richmond
PS. Emma Voigt will be in the role of student wellbeing coordinator for three days each
week and we welcome Mr Jamie Battista who will teach Year 1 and 2 for these three
days.
Looking ahead, next week will be Book Week with much planned in each classroom in-
cluding our Book Fair and a visit from Phil Cummings for some classes. A special Book
Week/Dress up Assembly will be held on Friday 18th August. More details are in this
newsletter.
Kind regards, Ella and Tracey
Our school’s Oliphant Science Award Game Entries
Games are fun to play and fun to make, but they can have a serious point too. Create some fun
and tell the world about science by making and award-winning game.
Congratulations Naisha, Sarah,Lemar, Jaagriti and Priyal. These powerful learners have
been practising as scientists during our last school holidays and have produced some
quality Oliphant Science Games. We hope they do well!
SAPSASA Basketball Newsletter
The SAPSASA Year 6/7 Basketball Cham-
pionships were held recently at Wayville
Stadium and a group of boys proudly
represented Richmond Primary School.
Over the past term, Henry, Jackson,
Isaac, Awhi, Jason, Harper, Owen and
Brayden were highly motivated and dedi-
cated to practicing their skills during
lunchtime trainings. The boys have shown
tremendous growth in their develop-
ment, which resulted in competing at a
high level and achieving 2 wins against
some tough competition. Thank you for
such terrific parent support, including
Luke Hutchinson’s scoring responsibili-
ties.
Well-done boys on a great carnival!
Daniel Nguyen
“Not every school has awesome PE teacher like Mr Nguyen. He is a positive person and has helped us im-
prove our skills and work as a team. Thanks Mr Nguyen. We loved every minute of it” From the boys in your
team.
Book Week Assembly Friday 17th August 2pm
A wonderful event to finish off our Book Week activities
with the author Phil Cumming’s visit on Wednesday and our
Scholastic Book Fair being some of the highlights. Students
are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book or
wear something that reflects the Book Week theme of “Find Your
Treasure” or wear their traditional clothes. Some classes will be
performing events linked to Book Week activities. Parents
are very welcome.
Last Friday Miss Angela’s Year 2/3 class went on an excit-
ing excursion to the Adelaide Zoo. In science we had been
learning about living things and how they grow, change and
have offspring similar to ourselves. To extend our under-
standing we attended a life cycle session at the zoo pre-
sented by a conservation educator. After we had lots of fun
learning all about different animal life cycles we explored all
the different animal exhibits in the zoo.
