As the price of precious metal contin-ues to rise, York police are keeping an eye out for thieves seeking to capitalize on the market.

The theft of metal, be it copper, bronze or whole automotive parts, such as cata-lytic converters, which are stripped for several precious elements, has been taking

place in York for several years.Thieves go after whichever metal can

land them a profit, police say.Bandits are not currently hitting resi-

dential neighbourhoods, with businesses bearing the brunt of the thefts, according to investigators.

To combat theft, police will often moni-tor areas that have been repeatedly hit with the aim of spotting unusual activity.

Last year, thieves cut out catalytic con-verters, which reduce emissions, in vehi-cles at a targeted Markham car dealership lot, York Regional Police Det. James Ken-nedy said.

In a March 2008 incident in Whitchurch-Stouffville, catalytic converters were removed from five vehicles, police said.

Condo battles coming to head: MPP

Ernie Dellostritto just wanted his kids to be allowed to swim in the pool he paid for as part of his condominium fees.

Instead, the Richmond Hill resident has spent nearly five years and $5,000 battling his condo board to ensure his family is treated fairly. And he’s not the only condo owner look-ing to the government for help.

“The pool is just a symbol,” he said. “The overall problem was families with children were being treated as second-class citizens.”

The condo board decided younger members could only use the pool during family swim hours they deemed between noon and 6 p.m. weekdays and noon to 3 p.m. weekends.

The board even raised the adult age from 16 to 18, just as Mr. Dellostritto’s son turned 16.

Mr. Dellostritto took the board of his condo to the Ontario human rights tribunal in 2009 after feeling ostracized and being subjected to dirty looks and regular arguments with his neighbours.

The “adult lifestyle” condo was chastised for discriminating against members such as Mr. Dellostritto, who bucked the trend by having younger families.

He and the condo ultimately reached an agreement that resulted in modified hours and the board awarded Mr. Dellostritto $1,000.

Whether it’s a battle between owners and their boards or between boards and property managers or developers, it’s coming to a head, according to NDP MPP Rosario Marchese.

“This is a critical problem because there are problems in all these relationships all the time and there’s nowhere to go,” he said.

Mr. Marchese’s recipe for fixing what’s wrong with condo law — private member’s Bill 79 — is before committee, having passed second reading.

It is your money they are working with, so town representatives are seeking your feed-back on the 2011 budget through two public meetings in the coming weeks.

Think less money should go toward snow removal? Or more should go toward parks or road maintenance? You can let the town hear what matters most to you as a business owner or resident.

Last year’s budget included a $117-mil-lion operating budget, water and wastewater budget of more than $41 million and a capital budget of close to $21.5 million, resulting in a town property tax increase of 1.96 per cent — the lowest in recent years.

To arrive at this year’s tax levels, the town will seek feedback from business owners and professionals this Tuesday at the Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce.

The session begins at 8:15 a.m. with regis-tration, followed by a presentation by Brenda

Hogg, regional councillor and budget chair-person, on the 2011 budget process.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to speak with and ask questions of town staff until 10 a.m.

Toronto driver killed in Markham

A Toronto teenager died in a Markham crash Thursday morning as icy conditions turned roads into skating rinks.

The crash, at about 7:30 a.m. on McCowan Road north of Elgin Mills Road, involved three vehicles, Const. Rebecca Boyd said.

Crash investigators believe the woman, 19, was headed north on McCowan in a Honda Civic when her vehicle collided with another and then a third was struck, Const. Boyd said.

Two drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The woman was pro-nounced dead at the scene, police said.

The crash was one of about 20 reported to police between 5 and 8:30 a.m., many believed the result of slick conditions, Const. Boyd said.

Ontario Provincial Police closed eastbound Hwy. 407 at Woodbine Avenue due to extremely icy conditions that led to several single-vehicle collisions at about 7:50 a.m.

Being labelled as a “role model” doesn’t phase 21-year-old Jessica Pearo.

The straight-A McMaster University kinesiology student takes such plaudits in stride, yet it’s her physical strides which have garnered her most attention as a member of McMaster’s track team.

Ms Pearo is a team captain, national champion and undefeated in her long distance running season.

The accolades have added up for the Richmond Hill resident who is a final nominee for Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year.

She’s now in the final three, from what was a preliminary group of more than 20 worthy nominees.

What’s also impressive is she is in the company of last year’s winner and Canadian world junior hockey captain Ryan Ellis, plus Canadian women’s soc-cer captain Melissa Tancredi, to round out the final trio.

“It was really surprising to be nomi-nated for this, particularly with the likes of Ryan and Melissa. I don’t even really care if I win, it will just be fun to go to

the dinner and (McMaster) bought a few tables.

“Coming from a sport that’s not rec-ognized like hockey or soccer in Canada, it’s nice to see my name up there,” she added.

The Langstaff Secondary School graduate ran her first race as a young girl, when living in Montreal.

Her father, Dave Pearo, remembers watching his daughter finish third in her first race as a Grade 4 student, even then seeing her natural ability shine.

Ms Pearo remembers the day for slightly different reasons.

“I just wanted to be in the race, because it got me out of school for the day,” she said with a laugh.

“My dad said I was a natural, but for me it was more fun than anything, so I kept at it.”

Keeping at it meant training at McGill University and while still in high school, training with York University’s track club, once the family relocated to Richmond Hill.

With three years as team captain under her belt, a national champion-ship, a university degree on the way,

plus plaudits as a McMaster “woman of influence” and other citizenship awards honouring her community work, the tag of “role model” should fit well on Ms Pearo.

“I’d like to think she’s a role model for other students,” said her proud father.

“She’s a great example of hard work and how we can all make a positive impact in our community,” he added.

As for the humble runner herself, she just concentrates on her running.

“I’d hope to be a role model maybe for my teammates and maybe by living a life a younger person can look up to. If that inspires a kid to take up running and it’s beneficial, great,” Ms Pearo said.

After earning her kinesiology degree, Ms Pearo is eyeing two years of addi-tional schooling to become a physio-therapist.

Ms Pearo has another important goal in mind, hoping one day to run a half or full marathon with her friends.

“It sounds funny, because it’s very much an individual sport, but I have built many strong relationships through running. I think it’s that social aspect that’s got me hooked on it,” she added.

The battle over the environment and Can-ada’s oil sands has focused in on Richmond Hill and Thornhill.

Environmentalists, led by Richmond Hill author Rick Smith, have taken up a door-to-door campaign this week focused on envi-ronment minister Peter’s Kent’s home riding of Thornhill.

This follows last month’s release of a map-ping tool showing the village of Thornhill swallowed up by tar sands mining sites, in addition to an ad targeting Mr. Kent pub-lished in The Thornhill Liberal last weekend.

The latest salvo launched this week, an “on-the-ground” offensive led by Mr. Smith, head of Environmental Defence, set off a flurry of accusations between pro-oil lobby-ists and anti-oil protesters; a clash set in the unlikeliest of locations — a tony, multicul-tural suburb far from northeast Alberta.

The conflict heated up shortly after the MP took over the post in January and, in his first media interviews as minister, described Canada’s oil-sands petroleum as an “ethical” energy source.

It’s an idea first advanced by Calgary author Ezra Levant, who argued the resource is ethically superior to petroleum produced

by countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia.Repeating Mr. Levant’s notion was like

waving a red flag to those such as Mr. Smith who believe oil sands are bad for the environ-ment and anything but ethical.

“I understand Ezra Levant speaking out, he’s a pundit, that’s his business to be provoc-ative,” he said. “But it’s disappointing coming from the environment minister when these are the first words out of his mouth on the first hour on the first day on the job.

“His job should be to protect the environ-ment, first and foremost. Instead, it’s seem-ingly about defending business as usual with industry.”

PETITIONS TO KENT

Mr. Smith said his group will be asking Thornhill residents what they think, then pre-senting their opinions in the form of petitions to Mr. Kent’s office.

“It’s an interesting and concerning initia-tive,” the Tory MP responded. “I’m all for public discussion when it’s based on facts and science,” but not, he said, when it’s “foreign-funded eco-vandalism”.

Mr. Kent was referring to reports this week by Mr. Levant that the Environmental Defence group is partly funded by American corporations; one of them, the Tides Founda-

tion, contributed $310,000.By targeting the Thornhill MP, the lobby

group sends the message “there are things you can’t say or U.S. billionaires will punish you”, Mr. Levant said, adding it’s no coinci-dence the lobby group launched its campaign just before an election may be called.

EXPLAINS STATEMENT

It’s wrong for a non-profit group to engage in the political arena, said Mr. Kent, adding his “ethical oil” statement referred to the fact Alberta oil comes from a country that regu-lates production with environmental con-siderations and profits shared with Canadian society at large, “not to aid foreign despots or terrorists”.

That argument is nonsensical, countered Mr. Smith. “It’s like justifying our treatment of aboriginals, saying it’s all hunky dory when compared to apartheid-era South Africa. It’s like saying we’re fine because we’re better than Nigeria. But we don’t measure any other aspect of our country against Nigeria. We don’t compare our human rights against Ven-ezuela. It’s a classic bait-and-switch tactic.”

Responding to charges his group is financed by American billionaires, Mr. Smith said, “That’s a bizarre spin on his part. We are a national charity ... with reports of donations

posted online. Compared to Canadian contri-butions, U.S. donations are minor.”

The Environmental Defence budget should be compared to the “massive” annual PR budgets of the big tar sands companies.

“Compared to them, our budget is chicken feed.”

Bringing the battle to Thornhill made sense, he said, because it is typical of many places in Canada where residents want “don’t want environment sacrificed on the altar of industry profit”.

Oil developers have also leaped into the fray. The Oil Sands Developers Group con-tacted The Liberal offering to comment on the myths and facts of the industry.

Thornhill residents should take an interest in the oil sands because they don’t just benefit Western Canada, said group president Don Thompson.

About 32,000 Ontario workers in manufac-turing, supply and engineering are employed indirectly by the oil sands, he said, and “the further east you go [in Canada], the more dependent [we are] on oil imported from the Middle East”.

“The environmentalists are lowering themselves to the level of telemarketers. That shows how desperate they are,” he said, offer-ing his sympathies to Thornhillers.

condo market across the GTA was very dif-ferent and practically non-existent in York Region.

Toronto has seen explosive growth in condominiums during the past decade and York Region is increasingly seeing its share of highrises, too. Developments with 30-storey towers are already approved in Vaughan and Markham and there were 137 condo resales last month alone.

Indeed, areas of Thornhill and Richmond Hill saw as many condo sales as detached home sales, a sure sign the suburban land-scape is changing.

The time is right to address long-standing concerns, Mr. Marchese said.

THREE KEY ISSUES

Rather than revisiting the entire Condo-minium Act, it boils down to three key issues for the MPP:

• Establishing a provincial condominium review board to oversee disputes between corporations and condo owners;

• Including converted condos under TAR-ION’s regulations and protections for new homes and;

• Standardizing language so owners are not ensnared by fine print in contracts.

The latter issue has been a hot topic in Markham Centre, where residents chal-lenged the Remington Group in court over thousands of dollars in additional fees they were charged upon moving in.

“Like every piece of legislation, it is one thing to write it and another thing to live it,” said lawyer Brian Horlick, who works exten-

sively in condo law.Most disputes boil down to issues between

residents and most are resolved without going to court, but there are definitely sec-tions of the current legislation that could be strengthened, he said.

If Mr. Marchese’s bill makes it through the committee process, it may come up again for a third and final reading in the legislature, but if it happens now or in a couple of years, Mr. Marchese is convinced the legislation will be revisited.

He was encouraged by the government’s July 2010 announcement of a provincewide condo owners’ survey.

“The problem is unless people pressure governments, they don’t act,” he said, noting he has seen increasing politicization among owners.

Mr. Horlick described Bill 79 as “certainly well-intentioned”, but said it also contains potential pitfalls.

NOT IMPROVED

As for Mr. Dellostritto, his victory was hol-low as the overall situation has not changed.

The father of two teenagers found families with children were not even allowed to sit on the committee that made decisions about the recreational facilities.

He co-founded a family committee, though its membership has dwindled as oth-ers moved out.

“It’s just too hard to keep fighting this,” he said.

Mr. Dellostritto could move his family out, too, but after 20 years in a location he likes, it’s not an option he has seriously considered.

Traffic concerns regional matterRe: Student hit in latest traffic acci-dent, Feb. 10 and Father wants rem-edy to traffic woes, Jan. 20.

I have read both articles by reporter Kim Zarzour. The accidents involving Alvin Lee and Mr. Carney’s daughter were deeply tragic — all the more so because they were prevent-able.

Unfortunately, we have some dis-respectful drivers who seem to have no regard for others or to the conse-quences of their actions.

I recognize that we have some serious issues surrounding the inter-section of Bathurst Street and Sum-meridge Drive.

As this is a matter for the Region of York and not for the City of Vaughan, I have already taken steps to for-ward my request to the appropriate regional staff and elected officials.

I have asked them to look into the matter and develop solutions, taking into consideration the current con-figuration of the roadway and the

proximity of the Hwy. 7 off-ramp to this intersection.

More cell-talking drivers should be ticketedRe: Police blitz handheld drivers, Feb. 3

Your story states since Bill 118 came into effect, York Regional Police have issued 2,931 tickets.

That works out to just more than eight tickets a day for the entire York force, which works 24/7 and 365 days a year.

Even if you add in the 740 warn-ings issued, you still get just 10 tickets per day.

Yet I see more than 10 drivers talk-ing on cellphones in my short morn-ing commute from Yonge Street to Hwy. 404.

Something is obviously wrong with the numbers ... one way or another.

About 800 of the GTA’s thought leaders in business, labour, education, community activism and politics gath-ered to explore civic-boosting issues related to the economy, environment, transit, housing, arts and diversity.

The timing couldn’t be more rele-vant to discuss diversity and its impact on urban communities, with some global leaders saying multiculturalism is a failure, while our own immigration rates are flourishing.

Britain’s David Cameron, Germany’s Angela Merkel and France’s Nicolas Sarkozy are saying multiculturalism has led to racial ghettos and religious extremism in their countries.

And while the Harper government has embraced immigration as a driver of the economy — 280,636 immigrants came last year, the most in 57 years — it has also closed settlement agencies and

“Immigrants are suffering enor-mously when they come into the economy,” he said.

Mayor Nenshi says immigrants also must take ownership in creating Can-ada’s multiculturalism success story.

“Yes, we must hold on to what makes our community special... but we must share those gifts (and) make sure that we are contributing to the greater success of every community and of all of our neighbours in the country.”

Ultimately, we all must share a value that “the success of immigrants is the success of our community, the success of our community is the suc-cess of our nation”, he said.

“That takes vigilance, that takes some policy prescriptions; above all, it takes goodwill amongst all of us.”

Since we live in a region that is among the most diverse in North America, I think that’s advice worth taking to heart.

Global investors are putting money in precious metals because they tend to hold their value even when difficult economic times rav-age stocks and bonds, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.

Drug addiction and poverty are fuelling some of the metal theft in the region, Det. Kennedy noted.

Companies that compile bins of scrap to sell to recyclers have, them-selves, been targeted by thieves, Det. Kennedy said.

Police say businesses should consider installing video equipment if concerned about being targeted for precious or scrap metal.

Hydro transformers in York have also been broken into, sometimes repeatedly, for spools of copper wire, and York police have heard of bar-becue cylinders, steel kegs and con-struction torches being stolen from job sites, Det. Kennedy said.

Even York Region cemeteries have been targeted. Police made arrests in September 2009 after workers spot-ted two men with a pickup truck using a pry-bar to remove bronze nameplates from several headstones at a Vaughan cemetery.

“It is a theft,” Det. Kennedy said, noting scrap metal is no longer “the garbage of old”.

For the second straight weekend, you may go to sleep Sunday wondering if your bus will be running Monday morning.

York Region Transit workers rejected a tentative deal Wednesday and have threatened to strike Monday if no resolution can be reached.

The more than 200 drivers and mechanics that main-tain 131 buses in the region’s southwest voted against a deal that was hammered out by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 and Veolia Transportation minutes before a previous strike deadline, last Sunday night.

More than 28,000 riders use the affected routes daily, primarily in Vaughan, though many also stretch into parts of Richmond Hill, King, Newmarket, Aurora and Markham.

If there is a strike, Viva service would not be affected and service would continue as usual on YRT routes in the north and southeast.

Transit staff are in a state of readiness if there is a strike, YRT general manager Rick Leary said.

York Region doesn’t sit at the bargaining table but the business model, through which routes are contracted out to multiple operators, is a good one, Mr. Leary said.

Disagreeing is union president Bob Kinnear, who said the region’s contracting out of services is causing systemic problems.

Workers have noticed York Region has the highest fares and biggest subsidies in the GTA, but they are not paid commensurately, he said.

The agreement reached by the union and company last week includes a 10.5-per-cent wage increase over four years, but the starting wage of $16.50 per hour would make them the lowest-paid transit workers in the region, Mr. Kinnear said.

Veolia Transportation was “surprised and disappoint-ed” by the rejection, according to spokesperson Val Michaels.

More talks were planned for Friday, Mr. Kinnear said.

The Richmond Hill Stars Select Minor Bantam boys team was the only Richmond Hill team to reach the finals in Feb 5 and 6 12th annual Richmond Hill Stars Select Tournament.

The Stars faced off Sunday afternoon for the gold medal at Elvis Stojko Arena against the Metcalfe Russell River Rats, who play in the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association.

The tourney attracted 80 teams from across Ontario and New York State.

Metcalfe’s minor bantam team, the top ranked team in their home division (18-4-2) this year, had already beaten the Stars (5-3-0) in the tournament’s Saturday round robin game by 5-2. History would repeat itself Sunday, with the Rats taking an early lead in the first period.

Despite two goals by Stars defenceman Samuel Daoust at 7:16 in the first and 5:07 in the second, Metcalfe Russell won the championship game by the same score, 5-2.

Metcalfe has been on the platform several times in past years here. The River Rats minor midgets won their divi-sion at the Stars tournament in February, 2009 while the Metcalfe minor bantams won the finals last year.

Metcalfe’s coach Dan MacNeil praised the Bantam Stars, calling them “very strong defensively”.

Richmond Hill hockey association’s Sean Aronson told the boys he is expecting big things when they play an upcoming Thornhill tournament.

Fighting in your own back yard before 55,000 of your neighbours at the Rogers Centre during the first UFC event held in your home prov-ince, could rattle the proverbial cage of any mixed martial artist.

This is the scenario facing Vaughan lightweight fighter Mark Bocek when he climbs in the ring at UFC 129, to partake in one of Ontario’s first events in the sport, which at this time last year was illegal.

Bocek, 29, will battle before a UFC record live crowd, screaming Canadian fans and millions watch-ing on pay per view around the world. Yet only one thing matters to Bocek.

“Once I climb into the cage it’s just me and Ben,” said Bocek from Hollywood, California where he has started his training for the April 30 fight.

“Ben” is Benson Henderson, Bocek’s opponent on the evening and one he hopes is yet another step up the ladder towards a title shot.

An emphatic win over the for-mer World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) champion Henderson will

no doubt put Bocek in the position to take a shot at the title, but as the odds-on underdog going into this fight, Bocek isn’t looking past his opponent.

Nor should he. Fighting at 155 pounds, Henderson has a profes-sional record of 12 wins and only 2 losses, compared to Bocek’s record of 9 wins and 3 losses. And Hender-son has held a major championship in the sport.

DOMINATING PERFORMANCE

Still, the former champ is coming off the fight where he lost his title, which served as the final match before the WEC merged with the UFC. Bocek, on the other hand, gave a dominating performance three months ago over Dustin Hazelett in Montreal.

Bocek, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, wrapped up the lanky Hazelett and made him submit using what’s known as a triangle choke midway through the first round.

The win also garnered Bocek submission of the night honours, which saw him earn a bonus cheque of $50,000; money he said is being put towards training, paying bills and savings. Two fights earlier he won a similar submission bonus for

$25,000, some of which he spent on a new motorcycle.

TORONTO FANS

While Bocek admits Henderson is no slouch in the cage, the Holy Cross High School graduate is con-fident he can give the Toronto fans something to cheer about.

“Ben is a decent striker, he has good cardio and he’s a good wres-tler, but I don’t think he’s ever faced anyone like me before. I’m more polished than he is in each area of the game and I think that will play out.

“He is a big name in the division, so this is an opportunity I don’t want to waste,” added Bocek.

Following his win in Montreal, the typically quiet Bocek made a public challenge to go toe-to-toe with fellow BJJ black belt, George Sotiropoulos in Toronto to see who the lightweight division’s best BJJ fighter is.

Sotiropoulos was already sched-uled to fight later this month in his native Australia and with the close proximity of the two events, Bocek was only granted half his wish.

While he is treating the Toronto date like any other fight, there have already been some noticeable dif-ferences in the lead-up.

“Oh man, it’s like everyone I have ever met is asking me to get them tickets. They give the fighter a few, but that’s it. I’m letting my manager handle that issue,” he chuckled.
