uptown art fair 2017

The vision of the Uptown Art Fair is to bring art to people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds; and to draw traffic and add vibrancy to Uptown Minneapolis. We foster an appreciation of the arts and provide a showcase and sales outlet for professional and amateur artists from around the country. Produced by the Uptown Association since 1973, the art fair is the Association’s primary fundraising event as well as economic engine for the community, generating revenue that pay for numerous local projects. In 2017, more than 379,000 people attended this nationally acclaimed, award-winning event that featured non-stop musical entertainment, one of the only youth art fairs in the state showcasing 80 talented young people, art activities for the entire family, fine food and refreshments from over 25 vendors, a culinary arts stage and a charitable partner program that highlights caring and giving organizations in our community The Uptown Art Fair is a labor of love made possible by hundreds of volunteers, the generosity of sponsors, the kindness of local businesses and those who support the arts. In our humble (and admittedly biased) opinion, it’s the best fair around. We hope you enjoyed your experience with us and look forward to partnering with us again in 2018 on August 3 – 5!

history

55 years ago, a group of local businessmen and women in the Uptown Commercial Club tried to develop ways to increase traffic and draw more people to the core of Uptown. In the late 1950’s, the Uptown area had fallen on hard times so there was interest by area businesses and residents to regain the popularity of the past. One idea was an art fair and the Uptown Art Fair was born! The first Uptown Art Fair was held in 1964 and featured 146 artists selling their wares on folding tables on the sidewalk. It brought art into everyday life onto the streets of an urban neighborhood and brought increased attention to the business district in the Hennepin – Lake area. Throughout the 1960’s, Uptown continued to gain a reputation as an “artsy” neighborhood and the Art Fair added to that perception. In later years, the newly formed merchants association, the Uptown Association, took over the production of the event and new ideas emerged to make the event bigger and better. One key idea was to increase the quality of the show and attract new artists through the development of a jury system that required higher artist standards than before. Since then, the Uptown Art Fair has evolved into an internationally recognized 3 day fine arts festival and one of the top 10 fine arts festivals in the country. With over 440 vendors participating including; artists, food, and sponsors, and an attendance of 379,000 art enthusiasts enjoying the show in 2017, the event is the largest art fair in the state of Minnesota and second only to the Minnesota State Fair in number of attendees.

overview The Uptown Art Fair, now having celebrated its 54th year, takes over the commercial district in Uptown Minneapolis.

What began as a neighborhood art sale just down the block from what is now Calhoun Square has developed into a

nationally recognized event. The Uptown Art Fair caters to tourists, art enthusiasts, artists, and festival-goers from

around the country.

Over the years, proceeds from the Uptown Art Fair have funded bicycles for police officers, a 3-phase business marketing study, an environmental planting project, 46 bike racks, community graffiti clean-up events, an awards program honoring local businesses, art installations of utility boxes, networking opportunities for residents and businesses, and visitor maps just to name a few.

SELECTION PROCESS

The Uptown Art Fair follows an arduous three-day jury process using a state-of-the-art online application and jury process called ZAPP™. Five highly knowledgeable artists, instructors, and experts in the industry comprise the jury panel that handpicks exhibitors after previewing projections of artist’s images on large screens.

Only previous year’s award winners receive invitations to exhibit in the next year. In 2017 a total of 765 artists applied to exhibit in the Art Fair, with only approximately 340 spots available. As such, it is an honor to be invited to exhibit at the Uptown Art Fair.

2017 EXHIBITING ARTISTS

This year’s exhibiting artists traveled from 32 states and 2 countries. A total of 111 exhibitors responded to our artist survey, reporting sales over $600k of art in 2017, averaging approximately $5,500 per artist. Artists share that the Uptown Art fair was their most successful event of the season and, in some cases, of their career.

2017 commemorative artist | nicole houff

Each year, the Uptown Art Fair selects a commemorative artist to represent the quality and dedication our artists bring to the Art Fair. The 2017 selection was Nicole Houff, an 18-year Uptown Minneapolis resident, who has a self-proclaimed “mild obsession” with Barbie. She’s photographed the doll and cultural icon in more than 100 scenes, producing studio-quality prints that evoke whimsical, often satirical situations. An Uptown Art Fair award winner, Houff created an original photograph specifically for the 2017 Commemorative Poster. She put thought into the combination of what Uptown meant to her personally, and the iconic marquee of the Uptown Theatre. “I love that Barbie is a conversation starter. People come up and talk to me at my booth about what she means in today’s culture,” said Houff. I was greatly honored to be this year’s Uptown Art Fair commemorative artist and enjoyed having many conversations with fair goers.”

During the Art Fair, twelve expert judges representing each of the media fields select the 2017 Uptown Art Fair “Best of Show” and “Artists of Merit” winners. Winners of the “Best of Show” are honored at the Artist Brunch hosted by Cowboy Slim’s. A “Best of Best of Show” winner is also selected for special recognition and an additional cash prize. “Best of Show” winners in each media receives a $500 check recognizing their excellence, while the “Best of the Best” receives a $750 check. In addition, all “Best of Show” winners are invited to forego the 2018 application process and exhibit at the event free of fees in the location of their choice.

Our evening bands on Friday and Saturday nights extended the musical experience to our guests while they enjoyed the nearby beer garden. Saving Vinyl City, a five piece funk pop band based out of Minneapolis featuring instruments that range from rock guitar all the way to brass kicked off the festivities on Friday. Following Saving Vinyl City, was the alternative rock band from Canada, Bleeker. Based outside of Toronto, Bleeker has toured with multiple headlining bands and brought their true rock ‘n roll spirit to the art fair stage. Kicking off the evening on Saturday was Brandon Glova better known by his stage name of DJ Bonics. DJ is the hip hop DJ for Wiz Khalifa and also a part time DJ in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

The guests at the Uptown Art Fair were able to kick back and soak in the live art at the GO MN Performance Stage while enjoying a cold, refreshing brew from Indeed Brewing Company. The beer garden as well as the other beer locations throughout the art fair property featured a variety of beer choices to help everyone relax and cool down. Our partner, Indeed Brewing Company was founded by Rachel Anderson, Nathan Berndt and Tom Whisenand in Minneapolis and sold its first beer in 2012. Today its employees number over 50 and they distribute in three states and counting. The garden also offered a prime viewing area for the nearby performance stage were musicians and dancers were rocking and clomping throughout the day and evening providing a perfect outdoor summer experience.

Some of the Twin Cities’ hottest chefs and most creative artists battled for culinary supremacy at the 6th annual culinary arts competition. Teams were given three themed ingredients, one secret ingredient, and 30 minutes to create a mouthwatering dish and eye pleasing piece of art. Local food, art and media personalities judged each round scoring the teams on culinary merit, artistic merit, overall creativity and most unique use of the ingredients with the winning team being crowned on Sunday afternoon. As a special addition, we invited our guests to try their hand at a plating design contest between rounds of the Culinary Arts Competition. Guests submitted their names for a chance to participate where they were given several ingredients and 20 minutes to create the most visual presentation. Special prizes were awarded to the winners.

Subaru was the proud sponsor of the 2017 Family Imagination Station presented by Northern Clay Center. All ages and

abilities were welcomed to participate in these free activities which included making a plethora of clay objects including

bowls and summer themed projects.

Ongoing pottery wheel demonstrations were also an integral part of the weekend. Guests were able to spend a few hours

or a few days at the Subaru Family Imagination Station and uncover their love for clay and the arts. Over 675 pounds of

stoneware clay was used in the demonstration area while teaching artists talked about the process of making pottery and

answered questions from attendees.

Celebrating its 13th year, the New Horizon Academy Youth Art Fair gave young artists an opportunity to shine at the Uptown Art Fair. Bringing together more than 80 up-and-coming artists between the ages of 8 and 18, the youth art fair showcases their talent while allowing them to display, discuss and sell their artwork while keeping all of the proceeds. The New Horizon Academy Youth Art Fair was held inside Calhoun Square on Saturday and Sunday. Works included everything from photography and painting to wood working and jewelry. This art fair component is an excellent opportunity for youth artists to showcase their work and experience an art fair alongside experience artists. The average sale for the weekend was $250 and the most earned was $825.

At the Uptown Art Fair, we believe in our community and all that it has to offer. To that end, we selected four local non-profits to be featured during the weekend. Each of these organizations created a unique and entertaining space including an interactive activity or demonstration which allowed guests to learn more about them and how they make our community special. Sponsored by US Bank, this tent was a natural fit to their corporative and giving platform of “Community Possible” which focuses on the areas of work, home and play. US Bank believes that the building blocks for our great country are a stable job, a home to call your own and a community connected through culture, arts recreation and play.

metro transit art pass

The Uptown Art Fair once again partnered with Metro Transit to provide convenient, reliable and environmentally friendly transportation. On Saturday and Sunday during the Art Fair, thousands of attendees downloaded an “Art Pass” prior to the event on www.uptownartfair.com and www.metrotransit.org, or picked one up on site at the Uptown Information Booth or Metro Transit Information Booth. Valid for complimentary bus and metro line rides to the Uptown Art Fair, and the Powderhorn Art Fair. The Art Pass made it easy to enjoy Minneapolis’ premiere arts weekend; over 10,524 rides were taken over those two days.

AAA minneapolis bike valet

For the eighth year, complimentary bike valet services was available for visitors to the fair. My Bike Project offered free bike valet parking to an average of over 1,500 bikes per day, greatly reducing the auto traffic and providing a stress-free parking experience at the Uptown Art Fair. Sponsored by AAA Minneapolis, the bike corral conveniently located near the Midtown Greenway allowed our guests to park their bikes for free under the supervision of the My Bike Project volunteers. My Bike Project is a non-profit organization that provies programming and resources to encouraging bicycling and walking in currently underrepresented communities throughout the Twin Cities. The My Bike Project is a program of the Cultural Wellness Center.

As a thank you to our sponsors, the VIP Hospitality area served as a retreat from the August sun and a break from the hustle and bustle of the fair. Metro Transit graciously opened the doors of its major bus hub for the weekend in support of our sponsors, who were invited to sit down and enjoy a wonderful complimentary lunch and dinner thanks to Corner Coffee and Marina Grill. Our sponsors are essential to the success of the art fair and the VIP Hospitality Area is our way of thanking those who support this event.

Large events like the Uptown Art Fair produce on average 2.44 pounds per person, per day. It is a challenge for an event of our size to implement waste reduction programs but with the help of the Sons of Norway, a local business located right in the heart of Uptown, we are able to coordinate recycling as well as composing of food waste.

The Uptown Information Booth sponsored by Stutsman Realty is one of the most visited locations during art fair weekend. Manned by one of the Uptown Association’s long standing committees, the Information Booth acts as a concierge for the art fair and all things Uptown. Armed with maps, lists and directories, the knowledgeable team of volunteers was able to help guests locate sponsors, find a particular kind of food or discover a particular artist whose work they loved. In addition, volunteers also distributed complimentary Metro Transit passes for the weekend. As a bonus, representatives from the Apple Store in Uptown were on hand to help fair-goers take a quick visitor survey one of their iPads. Everyone who took a survey was given a reusable bag from Stutsman Realty filled with valuable products and coupons from local businesses including information on the activities in the Twin Cities surrounding the Super Bowl in February of 2018. A few lucky guests also won stadium blankets donated by Stutsman Realty.

Volunteers play a valuable role at the Uptown Art Fair. Their support helps keep the event free to the public and truly makes the whole weekend a huge success. The hundreds of volunteers help with a variety of different jobs such as artist registration, beverage sales, artist booth sitters, and much more. The Uptown Association has been dedicated to the community and is proud of the lasting relationships it has formed with volunteers over the years. Families have made volunteering at the Uptown Art Fair a tradition while newcomers are excited to be more involved! Once at the art fair, the volunteers all received a high quality complimentary t-shirt sponsored by The Ackerberg Group. These unique shirts made it easy for patrons and sponsors to ask for assistance when needed during the art fair. Volunteers were also given beverage coupons and Bridgeman’s ice cream.
