Resourcing the New Area of Study - DiscoveryCampbelltown/Liverpool School Library Network ConferenceThursday 5th June 2014Mount Pritchard Public School

Welcome My name is Katie Cripps and I am hoping to outline today how I am going to help my teachers and students at my school get ready for the new Stage 6 Prescriptions for the HSC and in particular the Area of Study Discovery.1

I am the teacher librarian at Elizabeth Macarthur High School which is at Narellan Vale between Campbelltown and Camden. Our school has approximately 950 students and is partially selective. 2015 will be the first of our selective cohort to sit the HSC.2

In my previous life before I saw the light and became a teacher librarian I was a History and English teacher.HSC Marking experience I have been lucky enough to have marked the HSC from the previous Syllabus with the old related English paper through to the new syllabus in both the modules and the Area of Study. 3

First Area of Study was CHANGE which was split intoCHANGING WORLDSCHAINGING PERSPECTIVECHANGING SELFSecond Area of Study was JOURNEYS which was split up intoINNER JOURNEYSIMAGINATIVE JOURNEYSPHYSICAL JOURNEYS

The Board of Studies has recommended that the following phases for teaching of the Area of Study The Concept - for 2015-2020 is going to be Discovery needs to be examined through the rubric.21RUBRIC FOR THE AOSDISCOVERYBoard of Studies website contains pdf and word versions of the syllabus and the English Prescriptions for 2015-2010http://ww.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/pdf/doc/english-prescriptions-2015-2020.pdf

RUBRIC FOR THE AOS - DISCOVERYStudents consider the ways composers may invite them to experience discovery through their texts and explore how the process of discovering is represented using a variety of language modes, forms and features.RURBIC FOR THE AOS DISCOVERY Students need to show their understanding through the discussion of their PRESCRIBED texts and a judicious selection of a text of their own choosing (RELATED MATERIAL)By choosing good related material students can then clearly demonstrate a sound or even complex understanding of how the concept of DISCOVERY is represented IN AND THROUGH TEXTS.What kinds of discovery?Initial discovery

No Harry Potter in general or Lord of the Rings. WHAT WORKS???PICTURE BOOKSSHORT STORIESSONG LYRICSFILMS (WITH A CAVEAT) NOVELSYOU TUBE CLIPSNEWSPAPER ARTICLESPAINTINGS
