Redlands Area Democratic Club Vol. 3, Issue 23: June 2016 http://www.redlandsdemocrats.org
L ess than a week after the Democrat’s strong
showing in the CA Primary elections, we received
the horrible news of the massacre at the gay
nightclub in Orlando. Fifty people dead, including
the shooter, and 53
wounded. One minute we’re
basking in the glow of our
final election results, the next
we’re watching with disgust
the news of a hate-filled
rampage against the gay
community.
What’s so crushing is that
this is not the first time an
American armed with AR-15,
an AK-styled, highly deadly military-style rifle, has
targeted, terrorized and killed mass numbers of
fellow Americans. It’s the worst, to be sure, but
regrettably, not the first.
For residents in the Redlands area the attack on
December 2 at the Inland Regional Center in San

Bernardino are still fresh. The memories still chill
us as we drive on Waterman Avenue between
Hospitality Lane and Orange Show Road. That’s
why it’s so hard to believe that a mere six months
later another tragedy has befallen our country. And
with more lives lost. The Orlando shootings have
left us in the unenviable
position of extending our still-
broken hearts to the families,
friends and survivors of the
nightclub tragedy.
Creating communities where
families can live, work and play
without fear of gun violence
should not be a difficult charge,
yet in America we cannot seem
to find the blueprint for that.
So what can we do?
• We need a national dialogue on gun
violence, uninterrupted by the NRA. Gun
owners who want safe communities need to
join in that conversation and help search for
common sense solutions. Arming every man,
woman, and child with a gun is not a realistic
answer. Nor is taking away every gun. That
leaves plenty of room for workable solutions.
It’s time to figure out where we have
common ground and take some action.
• We need to provide mental health access to
those who need it. The stigma against
seeking help needs to fall away. We cannot
continue losing innocent lives because
people pick up guns and start shooting

instead of picking up the phone and seeking
help.
• The LGBT community needs our support.
Hate crimes against gays is not acceptable
and each one of us needs to speak out and
say so. Hatred against gays is not a gay issue,
meaning something they have to fight alone.
In America you should not fear death or even
harassment because of who you love.
• This will sound trite given the seriousness of
the moment, but Vote for Democrats and
encourager others to do the same. The
other party will talk about hate and outright
discrimination as solutions to the issues that
led up to the Orlando shootings. By contrast,
Democrats (mostly) will look for ways to
create safe communities, free from the risk of
terrorists and free from hate crimes while
protecting the principles upon which our
country was built.
Kristin Washington, President
Redlands Area Democratic Club
Board member Roger Bell wishes to share this Sierra Club
notice and urges your support: -
This year's presidential election is truly the most important of our
lifetimes for the safety of our planet, our families, and future
generations.
The choice we face in this election could not be more clear:
America can elect a leader who will continue and build upon
President Obama's climate legacy, or we'll watch as the first-ever
climate-denying president strips away decades of hard-fought
progress.
Donald Trump has said that climate change is a "hoax," and
vowed to bring back coal, approve Keystone XL, eliminate the EPA,
and "cancel" the Paris climate agreement. Trump wants to wipe out
the critical environmental protections that are reducing carbon
emissions and keeping our air and water safe. It's a wish-list straight
from the fossil fuel executives and climate deniers that are advising
him and writing his speeches.1 As if that weren't enough, Trump has
built his campaign around racism, xenophobia, misogyny, childish
bullying, and inciting violence. Trump is fundamentally unfit for the
presidency and stands in direct opposition to everything we value.
In stark contrast, Hillary Clinton has a strong, detailed plan to
tackle the climate crisis, protect our public lands, and accelerate the
clean energy revolution underway across the U.S.2 She's listened to
the voices of the millions of Americans who've spoken out for action,
and she's responded by siding with our movement against the toxic
TPP trade deal, saying no to Keystone XL, opposing dangerous oil
drilling in the Arctic and Atlantic, ending the extraction of fossil fuels
from public lands, and supporting a just transition to a clean energy
economy that works for everyone in America.
It's clear that Hillary Clinton will work to tackle the climate
crisis, which is why the Sierra Club is proud to endorse her for
President of the United States.
The principled debate we've seen in this year's Democratic
primary has put the urgent need for climate action in the national
spotlight. Senator Bernie Sanders has elevated this issue on the
agenda and has made this a robust debate with his tireless advocacy
to protect our climate and our communities. The Sierra Club
wholeheartedly applauds Senator Sanders' historic campaign, and
we are eager to continue fighting alongside him to protect our
planet.
This movement is stronger and better than ever before because
of the passion and engagement of grassroots members like you
throughout the primaries. But now, with a demagogue like Trump as
the Republican nominee, we must set our sights on the general
election and unite to elect climate champions up and down the
ballot. There is far too much at stake for us to not come together
now.
With more than 2.4 million members and supporters, and
chapters in all 50 states, the Sierra Club is ready to organize and
mobilize Americans in every corner of the country. We will speak out
against climate deniers like Donald Trump, and we will support Hillary
Clinton and other climate champions to win on Election Day.
We can't afford to sit on the sidelines. I hope you'll stand with us
and be a #ClimateVoter this year. Add your name now to show you're
ready! (Visit sierraclub.org for more information.)
The CA Legislature can put the Overturn
Citizens United Act on the ballot by passing
SB 254.
SB 254 just passed the Assembly with the
highly bipartisan vote of 51-26.
It is scheduled for a Senate Elections
Committee vote on Wednesday and a full Senate
vote will be as soon as the following day!
Action needed:
• Contact your State Senator to vote "Yes"
on SB 254 now and
• Contact your Assemblymember to say
thank you for voting “Yes” or express your
disappointment for that “No” vote!
Assemblymember Marc Steinorth (AD 40)
voted “No” on SB 254.
Tell State Senator Mike Morrell (SD23) to vote
“Yes”.

Congratulations to two 2016 paid RACD Members
Last month’s speaker was Hans Johnson, a community
organizer and spokesperson for several community-based and
nationally supported campaigns working closely with
foundations, clergy, and interfaith, labor, LGBT, immigrant, civil
-rights, reproductive-justice, and environmental organizations,
as well as socially responsible businesses.
Most recently he has been involving in a multi-year
campaign to pass the nation’s first
statewide ban on polluting single-use
plastic bags. This has been multi-year due
to repeated legal challenges to electorate
passage of initiatives and growing scientific
evidence of increasing pollution from the
bags, which are difficult to recycle
completely.
The plastic bag industry has contributed $50 million to this
repeal or modification, but it has been estimated that it would
cost $500 million to remove all plastic from storm drains, catch
basins, and landfills.
In addition, the polyethylene is responsible for deaths of
many wild animals, especially turtles, and it is now evident that
polyethylene microbeads are ubiquitously present throughout
Last month’s meeting recap
nature now. Two questions on the November ballot will be
to agree or not with the 2014 initiative for the ban (a “Yes”
vote) and if that doesn’t pass, to redistribute the money
raised by a 10 cent per bag usage fee (a “No) vote).
Also presenting were Mark Westwood, a candidate for
the 23rd District of the State Senate, going against
incumbent Mike Morrell. He is a long time resident of San
Bernardino County, a radio station manage
(KQLM), has been on the SBC central
committee for 12 years, president of a
Democratic Club for 8 years, and member of
SB City Parks Commission for 6 years. He is
committed to help continue the restoration
of the California economy, improving
education and opportunities for everyone, especially
students, seniors, and veterans, and lower crime.
As one in communications he listens well and can
communicate needs to those in Sacramento. He
encouraged everyone to remember to vote for SB County
Democratic central committee members at the end of the
ballot in June.
Abigail Medina was also present and familiar to us; she
is a candidate for the 40th State Assembly seat. She
described her campaign, extending from
experience as a member of the San
Bernardino School Board, she advocates for
improving local schools (as well as after-
school programs and access and
affordability of California’s colleges and
universities), creating more jobs and job training/retraining,
reducing poverty, and prioritizing public safety.

Editor’s Note: Abigail won the most votes in the race for
the 40th State Assembly seat. She will oppose incumbent
Marc Steinorth in the general election.
State Senator Connie Leyva (SD20) was previously announced
as our speaker for June's meeting, but unfortunately she had to
reschedule for September. We still have plenty to discuss. On
the agenda:
• The Nestle Water project and vote to adopt a resolution
• The CA June primary results
• An update from the local Clinton office
• Volunteer Day of Action at the Aguilar campaign
