P: Blessed be God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

(Please be seated.) ANTHEM “In Thee Is Gladness” SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament reading for Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost is from the book of

Esther. (2) 5 Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, 6 who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah. 7

Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This girl, who was also known as Esther, was lovely in form and features, and Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died. 8 When the king’s order and edict had been proclaimed, many girls were brought to the citadel of Susa and put under the care of Hegai. Esther also was taken to the king’s palace and entrusted to Hegai, who had charge of the harem. 9 The girl pleased him and won his favor. Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food. He assigned to her seven maids selected from the king’s palace and moved her and her maids into the best place in the harem. (3) 5 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged. 6 Yet having learned who Mordecai’s people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.

8 Then Haman said to King Xerxes, “There is a certain people dispersed and scattered among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom whose customs are different from those of all other people and who do not obey the king’s laws; it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them. 9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will put ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury for the men who carry out this business.” 10 So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews. 11 “Keep the money,” the king said to Haman, “and do with the people as you please.” (4) 9 Hathach went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. 10 Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, Women: 11 “All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that he be put to death. The only exception to this is for the king to extend the gold scepter to him and spare his life. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.” 12 When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: Men: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?” 15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: Women: 16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” (8) 3 Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews. 4 Then the king extended the gold scepter to Esther and she arose and stood before him. 11 The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate any armed force of any nationality or province that might attack them and their women and children; and to plunder the property of their enemies. Esther 2:5-9,3:5-6,8-11,4:9-16,8:3-4,11 L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand.) (*) RESPONSE 1. Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens. Refrain 2. Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it. Refrain 3. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Refrain

(*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and 2 saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were “unclean,” that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.) 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with ‘unclean’ hands?” 6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ Mark 7:1-7 L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) Tips for Safe Driving Over Labor Day Weekend While Labor Day isn't until next weekend, many will be hitting the roads early to enjoy the unofficial end of summer. The National Safety Council estimates that 400 traffic fatalities will occur over the holiday weekend, and another 38,800 medically consulted injuries will be sustained from motor vehicle collisions. With millions of drivers taking to the road, read the following tips to make it as safe for you as possible: Make sure you're well rested before traveling. Tired drivers are not only a hazard to

themselves and those in their vehicle, but by falling asleep or being less alert, mistakes can be made in judgment when driving.

Make sure everyone is properly buckled up, including back seat and rear seats in mini vans. Don't tailgate and make sure to turn around and check visually to make sure no cars are in

your blind spot. Obey all traffic signals and speed limits. This is especially true on holiday weekends.

Wherever you're going you want to make sure you get there safe. Also, be aware that law enforcement will be out to ensure that everyone is obeying all speed limits and laws.

Don't text and drive. When driving, pull over if you have to make a call or send a text. Pay heed to emergency signals and traffic. When you see an emergency vehicle's lights

flashing, MOVE OVER. Drive defensively and exercise caution, especially during inclement weather.

Channel One and 15 participating churches sponsor over 1200 kids weekly with food for weekends when they don’t get free or reduced meals at their schools. Channel One donates all the food for the program. Church volunteers are needed to pick up the food up at Channel One, fill the backpacks and deliver the filled backpacks to Kellogg Middle School on Fridays. The next week the empty backpacks are picked up from school on Tuesday and the cycle begins again. The churches responsibility is the purchase of backpacks, picking the food up at Channel One, packing the bags at church and delivering them to and from the schools. This occurs throughout the school year. If you are interested or would like more information call Ellen Blanco at 281-1624 or email at [email protected]. We are working on a deadline to let Channel One know our intent. We will need many volunteers to make this project possible.

“The Story” Reading Guide: August 26—September 2, 2012

Consider joining your fellow members in reading through the narrative sections of the Bible, during these 31 weeks. You may either use “The Story” or read the appropriate chapters in your Bible. (Copies of “The Story” are available in the Narthex. Current cost is $9.97 each.) For August 30/September 1 & 2: “Rebuilding The Walls” 1.) from the “The Story,” read chapter 21. (pages 291-304) OR 2.) from the Bible read: Ezra 7; Nehemiah 1-2,4,6-8; Malachi 1-4.

(You are certainly welcome to read the chapters in between!) To Think About: 1.) What was Ezra’s role when he arrived in Jerusalem? 2.) In what ways do you see God’s faithfulness in this chapter? 3.) Why was Nehemiah able to rebuild the city walls amidst such severe opposition? 4.) What can you do to gain a greater dependence on God in difficult circumstances? 5.) According ot the prophet Malachi, what did the Israelites do (or not do) that

displeased the Lord? Why were these things so evil? 6.) Are there areas of your life displeasing to the Lord? What can you do to make your

relationship right again?
