receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C:  Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

(8:00 am) ANTHEM  “Summer Evenings” – Addie Scheid, piano

SCRIPTURE READINGS L:  The Old Testament reading for today is from the fifteenth chapter of Genesis.     1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." 2 But Abram said, "Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."   4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the sky and count the stars —if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."   6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.   Genesis 15:1‐6  NIV  L:  This is the Word of the Lord. C:  Thanks be to God.   L:  The Epistle reading is from first chapter of 2 Corinthians.    18 But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No." 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy —was not "Yes" and "No," but in him it has always been "Yes." 20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God. 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.  2 Corinthians 1:18‐22  L:  This is the Word of the Lord. C:  Thanks be to God.  (Please stand to sing.)

WELCOME TO THE

HUTTON’S! On Saturday and Sunday, August 17/18, Ethan and Amanda Hu on are joining us to share about the work God is doing in the Central American Mission field. They will share briefly at the start of service, but if you would like to hear more they will share for about 15 minutes between services on Sunday. Come and hear from a young missionary couple that is passionate about telling people about the hope and love we have in Jesus!

ETHAN AND AMANDA HUTTON, along with their two children Aubree and

August, serve as missionaries in Costa Rica. They live in Esterillos Oeste, where they are present in their local community. As rela onships develop over me, opportuni es arise to inten onally share the hope that we have in Christ Jesus. Ethan and Amanda are working with Mission of Christ Network (MCN) in developing rela onships throughout Costa Rica in order to find poten al new local ministry partners. These partners will enable Ethan and Amanda to con nue to serve in Costa Rica, and it may open to the possibility of increased MCN involvement in Central America as more mission partners may be sent to serve. In addi on to this, they are working with MCN to develop online English as a Second Language training for MCN mission partners around the globe. They will also be serving as mentors of a few new MCN mission partners as they engage in cross‐cultural educa onal contexts. The Hu ons have spent 2 years living and serving in Costa Rica in associa on with MCN. In August 2017, they moved to Esterillos Oeste, and they began serving as teachers in Seeds of Hope clubhouses. In January 2018, Ethan and Amanda became the directors of the Parrita clubhouse, working to share the hope and love of Christ and to prevent human trafficking in that community. They served in this context un l May 2019.

August is National Immunization Month Raising a child comes with many decisions. Some are a ma er of taste, like what color to paint the nursery. Others are essen al especially when it comes to safety, like baby proofing your home for poten al hazard. But, what about the hazards that you can’t see and that can cause serious illness, disability, or even death in young children? Reducing and elimina ng the disease that vaccines prevent is one of the top achievements in the history of public health but, because of this success, most young parents have never seen or experienced the devasta ng effect that diseases like polio, measles, or whooping cough can have on a family or a community. The truth is they s ll exist. This summer Minneapolis had a measles outbreak and Minnesota hockey players missed games because of the mumps. Some of this occurred because of an ‐immuniza on groups. According to the CDC a person was infected when in a foreign country. As a result this person infected several individuals when returning to Minnesota. Although there may be some discomfort or tenderness at the injec on site, this is minor compared to the serious complica ons that can result from the diseases these vaccines prevent. Serious effects from vaccines are very rare.

Redeemer In-House Mission/Ministry Many of us may not have the opportunity or call to become missionaries in places near or far, but we can serve with gladness right here at Redeemer. Proceeds from the annual rummage sale will be, as in the past, donated to Redeemer projects or to local organiza ons which provide assistance to those in need. The Annual Redeemer Rummage Sale dates are October 4 and 5. Clean, useable dona ons are welcome from Sunday, September 29, thru noon Thursday, October 3, in the fellowship halls. We welcome every one who is able to volunteer when me is available. The volunteer sign‐up forms are at the Welcome Center and the display table in the Narthex.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Love One Another As I Have Loved You… In John 15:12 (NRSV)

Jesus says, “this is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Loving and caring for one another is not just the pastor’s job—it is something Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen Ministry is a ministry in which people with special gi s for caring can put those gi s to use in an organized way, brining Jesus’ love and care to those who most need it. If you would like more informa on, contact Pastor Loos at [email protected] or call the church office at 289‐5147.
