Redborne Magazine
issue 1 Although the Redborne community is, and always has
been, at the centre of the school, I’ve always thought there
was something missing. When the school newsletter comes
around every term or so it is obvious that it is very imper-
sonal to us Redborne kids. If you find exam results gripping
reading then you probably don’t have a problem with the
newsletter but I for one think that it is mainly an opportu-
nity for the school to boast of the fantastic results to our
parents. Hence why I decided that starting a school magazine would be the per-
fect solution to improving the community. The magazine will provide you with in-
formation about the school and an insight into what happens within the school.
In the first ever issue of Redborne Magazine there is plenty to sink your teeth
into. An interview with the Eco committee on page 6 gives a clearer picture of
what this school is doing to combat climate change and help make the school run
sustainably and efficiently.
In the Drama department a school trip was confirmed in early last December
to watch a play, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, at the National Theatre in Lon-
don. On page 14 you can read a little bit more about the play and it’s background.
Tickets are available to GCSE students, although there are limited tickets so get in
fast if you wish to come along.
Also in the magazine you can find the regular features, Essential Sport where
you can read about sport news, clubs, fixtures and teams in the PE department
and Music News where you can read about concerts, lessons and rehearsals.
There’s a lot more to see but if you think we can improve the magazine in
anyway and more content let us know.

Green army! Founded by, Redborne Science teacher, Mr Dobson in 2008, the Red-
borne Ecological Committee (or Reco as it’s known) was created not to
single-handedly stop climate change, but to help make Redborne an eco-
logical school. Any school naturally uses a massive amount of resources,
never mind thousand pupil Upper Schools much like Redborne. Reco inves-
tigates ways to avoid using so much resources by re-using, recycling and
reducing waster around the school. We interviewed Toby, a Reco represen-
tative, and asked him what the Reco committee got up to last year and
what plans they have for 2010
RM: Mr Dobson, we all know that protecting the environ-
ment is all very important but I think a lot of people just
ignore it. Do you agree?
Mr D: Unfortunately I totally agree. Climate change and
global warming has been in the public eye for many years
now. We’ve seen stuff on TV news and marketing cam-
paigns, such as the ACT ON CO₂ campaign, but no one’s get-
ting the message. I say no one, there are many activists
taking action which is good. I just wish everyone would re-
alise that by being careless with our environment we’re ru-
ining it for future generations.
RM: Part of the reason you are running this committee is
to claim the Eco School awards. Explain more about what
these involve.
Mr D: It is quite a complex campaign but I'll try to explain it
as well as I can. Basically the Eco Schools campaign is a
campaign that encourages schools to be environmentally
friendly. As you achieve more an more in the way of eco-
logical things you can submit your progress to the Eco
Schools committee and they award you with various Eco

Tuesday lunchtime in Mr
Dobson’s form room.

How Redborne is doing its bit to
save the planet
School medals, Bronze, Silver and, you guessed it, Gold!! We are currently working on
our Silver award which isn't bad since we’ve been running for 2 years. It’s a good cam-
paign and something to be proud of!
RM: Reco has been together for roughly 2 years now,
what have you achieved in the last two years?
Mr D: Our first triumph was probably getting paper recy-
cling bins in most classrooms. This was a great achieve-
ment for us, it’s one of the easiest ways to be eco friendly
so it was the first logical step to getting green. It’s all well
and good, however you may have noticed I said “most
classrooms”. We’ve still got some classrooms to get bins
in and then that mission is truly complete!
Of course that isn’t the only thing we’ve achieved. Last
year, especially, saw the planting of new trees, which of
course will absorb CO₂ and release oxygen. We also saw
the introduction of bees later last year. They not only help
us pollinate the plants around the school but also provide
us with lovely honey which will hopefully get us some ex-
tra cash for various endeavours. They’re great animals to
have and a brilliant addition to the farm – although I'm
not sure the Farm students are too keen on them!!
[laughs].
RM: What’s next?
Well, as you know we are currently redeveloping the quad
area in North School. The designing was left to the pupils and
we’re in the process of selecting our favourite design. We’re
planning to start the proper building bit midway through this

Ask
Aunt AudreyAunt AudreyAunt AudreyAunt Audrey Send your queries into me in confidence, whatever they might be and I'll try to answer
them...
Dear Lara I blame school toilets.
They are always minging.
If the smells, skid marks and splashes aren't enough, why do the doors start
at knee height? And why are the locks always bust? Plus it's impossible to
do our business in silence, no matter how much bog roll we lay down first.
Millions of school kids hold on all day, rather than face the break-time
piddle.
But this causes trouble. We can get urine infections and constipation. Going
regularly is what our body needs.
Here are some facts to help:
1) We all make farty, splashy noises on the loo. It's natural. Anyone laugh-
ing at this is the one with the problem.
2) Some people worry about bugs and hygiene in public toilets. We may not
want to eat our dinner off a loo seat, but we're not going to pick up an in-
fection from sitting on it. If in doubt, hover.
3) Like motorways, public loos have rush hours. Think like a Sat Nav and
avoid the jams. Privacy and peace are possible.
Keep battling your fear. Remember, it's not ridiculous. Just think how
proud, free and (above all) relieved you'll feel when you've conquered it.

Fear of public toilets
I have a huge fear of going to the toilet in public places
or other people's houses, it's really starting to hold me
back and make life difficult. I really need help, I know its
a ridiculous fear, I'm just scared people will laugh at me.
PLEASE HELP ME!
I don't know what to do anymore.

Dear Jade
John and Edward. Global warming. And black
heads.
Three things we can live without.
Those clusters of black pits on our nose
, chin or
forehead are known in the trade as comed
ones.
We need to bust the three biggest blackh
ead myths.
1) "Creams and makeup help." Nope. They
make it
worse, blocking pores and making our ski
n oily. Stick
to products marked non-comedogenic.
2) "Blackheads are dirty." No way. The b
lack stuff is
(wait for it, science fans) partially ox
idised sebum.
So washing too vigorously will not help.
Stick to
once a day, with warm water.
3) "I can get rid of mine by squeezing."
Bad move.
Squeezing a blackhead just enlarges the
pores and can
cause zits and scars to form. If you mus
t squeeze,
steam your face over a basin of hot wate
r first and
go gently. Never gouge.
The best thing I know for blackheads is
Benzoyl Per-
oxide. It is available from your chemist
without pre-
scription, so ask your Pharmacist. It cl
ears up
blackheads a treat. Wish the same could
be said for
John and Edward.

face, I use cream but it does not work, I wipe my make
up off every night? what could this be?? HELP! Jade, 16

New year, new plans? After being School Council year representatives for a term
we find out from Year 10 reps, Kieran Jeffs and Gwenda
Goddard-Mason, what has been achieved in the last term
and what is planned for the new term.
RM: Why did you apply for a role in the
School Council, what did you hope to
achieve?
KJ: I’ve always liked the idea of being
having a bigger role in a big structure
such as a school. Being a school council-
lor as enabled me to have more of an
input into how the school could be run.
As for what I wanted to achieve, well, I
guess after being at the school for a year
I have noticed various things that could
be changed and improved and I wanted
to amend these things.
GG-M: Although like Kieran I did want to
get a bigger role in the Redborne com-
munication, the main reason I put my-
self forward for the school council was
to something different. I’ve had a fairly
standard 1st year at Redborne and I want
to do something different with my 2nd. I
hoped to make a big difference in some
way or another. I don’t think I've
achieved that yet but I’ve still got half a
year left at least.
RM: Do you think you’ve achieved
much in the previous term?
KJ: I won’t lie, I don’t think we’ve
achieved a lot this term. But I think that’s
fine. The first term should be used to set-
tle in and start coming up with ideas
which can we develop later on. This term
we hope to turn those ideas to reality.
GG-M: We’ve done a lot of talking, but
that’s not a problem. The development
of the ideas that we have received is just
as important as those ideas existing.
“I wanted to do
something different
with my 2nd year”
“This term we hope
to turn these ideas
into reality”
Redborne Magazine RM: We’ve heard about the redevelop-
ment of the Quad area. How is that going?
KJ: It’s going great. As you might be aware,
Mr Dobson who is running the scheme has
received many entries to the design compe-
tition so we’re getting feedback from the
school and then we will make the final deci-
sion. Its looking really great. I think this is
the radical project that this school has
needed for a while. It will provide a perfect
a place to eat lunch, shelter and socialise.
With any luck it should provide a solution
to the overcrowding problems we are cur-
rently experiencing in the corridors around
the Year 9 year room, science department
and art department.
RM: So what else do you hope to achieve
in the new term.
KJ: There were a number of things that my
supporters have suggested for things that
need to be changed. These include sorting
out the toilet facilities (soap, toilet paper
and making sure that they are unlocked.)
Also many people wanted the vending ma-
chines to include a large variety of stock.
We are addressing these issues throughout
the new term and with any luck the prob-
lems will be resolved.
GG-M: A lot of people have contacted me
complaining of the lack of non-uniform/
mufti days. During this term we will try to
fit more mufti days into the year. Not only
will this give students a chance to have a bit
of fun but it will also provide a chance to
raise some cash for various charities. Its a
win situation!!
RM: Do you enjoy being part of the School
Council?
KJ: Absolutely. I know that a lot of people
would turn down the opportunity to be in
the school council. This is mainly because it
involves a lot of work and commitment.
Honestly, my whole timetable is stuffed with
interviews like this [laughs].
But to me this gamble has totally paid off. I
enjoy having an active contribution to the
Redborne community. Overall although be-
ing a big commitment, it is the best thing I
have ever done... That and lobbing a wet
sponge at Mr Woodward!!
GG-M: Yes and no. But mainly yes! No be-
cause like Kieran has said it is a massive
commitment. A lot of the time I find myself
thinking that I would rather hang around
with my friends at lunch than go to a meet-
ing. But despite this going to the meetings
are very interesting, productive and fun!!
It’s a great way to spend time, making a dif-
ference to the school lives of current and
future Redbornians.
Next issue you can read more about the
planned quad renovation and see some of
the shortlisted plans.

Essential Sport Redborne Sports News As a Sports College the PE Department is always striving to succeed in lessons and in extra-
curricular activities. The football and netball teams have been especially successful last term and to
celebrate their success we have a few short articles about their victories. But if you’re not part of the
sport success in Redborne why not join a club or team and be part of the sporting community. Check
out the list of sports club on the opposite page.
Triumph for Redborne Under 16’s Redborne’s under 16 football squad has claimed victory in the
County School tournament. The team played 16 matches in total
winning 14 of those and drawing the others. This is the best result
for our under 16 boys in Redborne history. Well done lads!!
Representing
Redborne Not wanting to be outdone, the girls have performed bril-
liantly on the netball court recently. On Saturday 9th May,
2009 , the U14 and U16 netball teams travelled to a cold,
wet and very windy Chorley to compete in the National
Sports College Finals which involved the top 9 Sports Col-
leges teams in each age group in the country. Both teams
qualified as Central Region champions and so we went with
a very good reputation. It turned out to be quite a success-
ful day...
Despite several players battling with injury, the U14 squad played some
superb netball and finished as runners up.
For various reasons, the U16 team only had 7 players and so a few of
them were out of position. Hollie Joyce (usually GD) played as GS all day
and Gracie Vickers (usually WA) played as WD. The girls were fantastic,
played with great spirit, only lost one game and finished in 3rd place.

theme was dance through the ages and the show included scenes from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s
and present day. If you missed out here’s a little taster of what you missed

Street dancing. Yo.
Yoga? Probably not.
Bad hair day? Of course not, it's
a tribute to the King of Pop
Every Good Boy Deserves Fa-
vour. Some might recognise
this phrase in music, referring
to the notes in the treble clef.
But others would know it as a
theatrical production which
merges actors with an orches-
tra with spectacular results.
To give GCSE Drama students a
well earned break the depart-
ment has booked tickets for
Every Good Boy Deserves Fa-
vour at the National Theatre in
London. If you’ve never heard of
this production, which is critically
acclaimed to be superb, here’s a
little more about it.
A dissident is locked up in an asy-
lum. If he accepts that he was ill,
has been treated and is now
cured, he will be released. He re-
fuses.
Sharing his cell is a real patient
Ivanov, who believes himself to
be surrounded by an orchestra.
As the dissident’s son begs his
“Is denying the
truth a price
worth paying
for liberty?”
father to free himself with a
lie, Tom Stoppard’s darkly
funny play asks if denying the
truth is a price worth paying
for liberty.
If you want a chance to see
this incredible play collect a
letter from Mrs French or any
member of the Drama depart-
ment. Note that tickets are
very limited so hurry up if you
want a place.

Year 9 Options Fair As you’ll be aware, Year 9 is not
only an important year for set-
tling into Redborne, but also making
big decisions. The Decisions you make
regarding GCSE’s in Year 9 will almost
definitely effect your future and may
well be the difference between getting
a job or being turned down. Now we
wouldn't want that would we.
With over 50 GCSE courses to choose
from it’s not surprising that you might
find the choice a bit boggling. That's
why on the 29th January we run an Op-
tions Fair where you can get a taste of

Obviously the fair cannot accommodate
for all the courses but it’s worth coming
along to try and help make the deci-
