ND IT’S

GOODBYE FROM ME

This amazing exhibition encompasseda large part of the 007 legacy andenables the public to appreciate lots ofartifacts from the films. There were one ortwo comments from Bond fans that therewere no gadget blueprints on display ofthe Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5 in theexhibition. Meg Simmonds, of the EONArchive, explained: ‘I think it’s enough that the DB5 is there

by itself. We made the decision toconcentrate on the gadgetry instead. Wehave the DB5 and some technicaldrawings which we reproduced to makethem more visible rather than using theoriginal base paper and pencilblueprints.’The ‘Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond

Style’ exhibition was officially opened onSaturday 11th October in the presence ofBond girl Daphne Deckers (Elliot Carver’sPR girl in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies)and the Mayor of Rotterdam, AhmedAboutaleb. The Kunsthal is also featuringa pop-up store with all kinds of Bond

memorabilia for sale, including a souvenircatalogue and even gadgets! If you want to attend, there are several

007 hotel packages available whichinclude themed social evenings. Specialeducational events for children will beheld and the city of Rotterdam hasundertaken city dressing with specialshops in ‘Gold’; the original Citroen 2CVcar from 1981’s For Your Eyes Only is ondisplay at the NN DE Café onStationsplein, while department storeDeBijenkorf will be dedicating its windowdisplay to the exhibition.

Holland is in a Bond frenzyover the coming months.

‘Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style’ runs from12th October 2014 to 8th February 2015 at deKunsthal, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.Opening hours: Tuesdays to Saturdays 10am to 5pmSundays and public holidays: 11am to 5pmInformation: +31 (0) 10-4400301 www.kunsthal.nl

Sadly therefore, having had specificresponsibility for Corgi and AviationArchive, I will be saying Goodbye after avery happy 31 years behind the Corgiand subsequent Aviation Archive Clubdesk. Many of you have been with usfrom the launch of the Club in August1984 and have become firm friends andconstructive correspondents. It hasalways been good to put faces to namesas well, where we have met at the manyexhibitions; at our popular annual CorgiGreat Little Car Show weekends; and atthe numerous die-cast model clubs Ihave addressed at home and abroad.Thank you for your interesting articles, letters, model suggestions and above all, your loyalty over the years. A great thankyou too, to our guest professionalcontributors who have helped to makeCorgi Collector such a successful andwell-established magazine with theinclusion of their specialist and technicaltopics. There have been so many memorable

moments over the years. We met and

interviewed numerous ‘greatnames’ for the Club magazinefrom the transport world ofplanes, trains andautomobiles and also theworld of show biz, all bringing our Corgimodels to life. We’ve co-presented aseries of the QVC Shopping Channel die-cast collectables programmes, appearedin an hour-long Corgi ‘special’ BBC2 TopGear programme with presenter SteveBerry - and so much more. It has beentremendous fun. And what now? By 2016, Corgi’s 60th

Birthday, I plan to finalise thephotography on the book I havecompiled and completed on the historyof Corgi from 1984 to 2008, when thename became part of Hornby Hobbies. Ithas been a mammoth task with so manymore product categories than before.Unlike Marcel (van Cleemput) who wrotethe story from 1956-1983 and had asample of every Corgi model in hiscollection, I need to access the modelsfrom several quarters, including the Corgi

Archivewhich will be my firstport of call. However, to fill any gaps, especially with those unusual and non-catalogue items, if anyone has acomplete collection and would be willingto let me photograph it, I welcome yourinput! In the meantime, I hope you all

continue to enjoy the ‘new’ Club and ouramazing Corgi brand for many years tocome.Susan PownallConsultant EditorCorgi and Aviation Archive. Email: [email protected]

You will have read in this issue that there are somegroundbreaking changes to the Corgi Collector Club. From 1st January 2015, the Club will be administered inhouse by the Hornby Hobbies team at Margate.

TV AND FILM SERIESCC04203 James Bond Aston MartinDB5 - Goldfinger 50th Anniversary.2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the

release of Goldfinger, thethird film in the JamesBond franchise. This wasthe film in which Bond wasfirst partnered with his famous AstonMartin DB5. In 1964, to coincide with therelease of the movie, Corgi produced areplica of 007’s DB5 which went on tobecome the best selling Corgi model ofall time. At the International Toy Fair in1965, the Corgi model was named asthe first ever Toy of the Year. The new replica celebrates both thesemilestone anniversaries. It comes in itsoriginal ‘Fit the Box’ scale in retro-styledpackaging, heavily influenced by theclassic Corgi pack of 1964. And - just toadd to the excitement - for every pack ofsix models delivered to your retailer, there will be five silver DB5s (CC04203)and one gold version (CC04203G).The model also comes with the originalfeatures of a working ejector seat, front-mounted machine guns, bullet-proofscreen and tyre-shredding blades. It isapproximately 100mm long when thefront and rear gadgets are retracted. The production run is unlimited and youshould be able to buy it in the shopsearly in 2015, selling in the UK for£19.99.

CORGI TOY SERIESSuperhaulers 1:64 scaleTY86659 Eddie Stobart Box LorryIn the bright up to date white colourscheme with the equally modern EddieStobart signature green and red graphic,

this latestlorry with detachable trailer will

appeal to young ‘Eddie Spotters’ andalso many of the adult collectors whocollect trucks, whatever the scale.

BEST OF BRITISHGS89201 New Routemaster. New Tooling. ‘Fit the Box’ scale.Whilst the traditional LondonRoutemaster will live in our memories asthe iconic London Bus, the new Bus ForLondon, affectionately known as the‘Boris Bus’ after the current Mayor ofLondon, is fast gaining in popularity andalso has an enthusiastic following inCorgi model form. Our 1:76 scale Corgimodel releases of this superb moderndouble decker have all been a sell-out,so we are delighted to introduce thebrand new tooling of the bus into theCorgi Toy series.Decorated in the traditional Routemasterred colour with the London Transportroundel on the sides, the bus istravelling on Route 38 to PiccadillyCircus. The patriotic Union Flag featureson the advertising panels on both sides. The model joins the existing Best ofBritish themed souvenir range of modelswhich includes the London Taxi in 1:36scale, Tube Train, Classic Mini in 1:36scale, Concorde and the traditionalRoutemaster in 1:64 scale, all decoratedin red, white and blue and incorporatingthe Union Flag design.

In the last issue of Corgi Collector (241), wereported on the launch of the newly tooled, verymodern and highly detailed 1:43 scale Corgi BentleyContinental and in our competition we also asked youto give us the familiar name for the famous Bentley

Mascot - the ‘Flying B’. It is coincidental therefore that a

fine example of the Bentley ‘FlyingB’ winged mascot has recentlycome up at a Toys and Collectables

auction at the Wallis & Wallis Auction Rooms in Lewes inSussex, where the silver plated mascot sold for £140. Just12 cms high, it was silver plated and mounted on a plinthas a desk ornament. It goes to show that many model toyand die-cast collectables buyers also have an interest inclassic cars!At the same auction, a scarce Corgi Toys Gift Set 3

comprising a rare Batmobile and Bat Boat on a Trailer, soldfor an amazing £1600. The Batmobile featured red batswithin bright gold wheels, light blue plastic screens to thewindows and came complete with both figures. The boatalso had two figures seated on its gold painted trailer withcast wheels. Its original window box had minor wear and

creasing to the cellophanewindow although thecontents were mint as new.Whenever this scarce giftset appears at auction thereis always fierce competition, which was certainly thecase here, resulting in thehigh hammer price.

He was successful inshooting down several enemy aircraftincluding Bf109s and Junker Ju 88.However, during an attack on a largeformation of Dornier Do 17 enemyaircraft on 12th August 1940, he wasflying behind his commanding officerin the Hurricane P2970, now thesubject of our Corgi model. Theaircraft was hit and caught fire. The

fuel tank in front of him was exudingburning fuel into the cockpit andcovering him. His bare hands andface were very badly burned yet hemanaged to eject, landing byparachute into the North Sea. He waspicked up in an extremely bad stateand transferred to the Burns Unit atQueen Victoria Hospital in EastGrinstead, where he was treated bySir Archibald MacIndoe, a pioneeringplastic surgeon, who was rebuildingthe bodies of disfigured airmen. BothGeoffrey Page’s hands were burntdown to the bone and his head wasalso severely swollen and burnt.During his time in hospital GeoffreyPage became a founding member ofthe surgeon’s Guinea Pig Club, goingon to become its first Chairman withMacIndoe elected as President. After enduring 15 operations during

his time at the Queen VictoriaHospital, it was still thought unlikelythat Geoffrey Page would be able tofly again. However, due to his hatredof the enemy, his determined spiritand the outstanding success ofMacIndoe’s operations on him, he

succeeded in eventually achieving fulloperational flying status in 1942. Hissubsequent mission was to shootdown at least one enemy aircraft foreach of his 15 operations and he

started off by joining No.132Squadron RAF as a supernumeraryFlight Lieutenant. He was then postedto Air Fighting Development Unit atWittering, flying the North AmericanMustang Mk.I, teaming up withanother disabled airman SquadronLeader James MacLachlan, who hadreturned to flying despite having lostan arm over Malta in 1941. Thisintrepid duo had a number of highlysuccessful sorties, including theshooting down of six enemy aircraft injust 10 minutes south of Paris on 29thJune 1943. Page was awarded theDFC for this action but sadly, less thana month later his comrade in armswas shot down and killed.Later in 1943, Geoffrey Page joined

No.122 Squadron RAF as FlightCommander and then went on torejoin 132 Squadron in January 1944as Commanding Officer. However, inSeptember 1944, now Wing Leader ofNo.125 Wing RAF, Page crashed andbroke a bone in his back, sending himback into the charge of Sir ArchibaldMacIndoe for more operations, whichsignalled the end of his flying careerfor good. Nevertheless, by this time,Geoffrey Page had succeeded inachieving his goal of 15 kills, receiving

both the DSO and the DFC & Bar.Upon Receiving the DistinguishedService Order in 1945, his citationincluded the words ‘Apart from hisindividual exploits, Wing Commander

Page has infused the entire wing withhis fighting spirit. Under his command60 enemy aircraft have beendestroyed’. During his career, he hadserved not only during the Battle ofBritain but also participated in theInvasion of Normandy and the Battleof Arnhem. Geoffrey Page underwent further

surgery early in 1945 before joiningVickers Armstrong for a short spell asa test pilot. After the War, he went onto command No.64 Squadron RAFwhich included flying the de HavillandHornet. He finally left the RAF in 1948and re-joined Vickers Armstrongbefore becoming an internationalaviation consultant based inSwitzerland.

The stone figure of a lonepilot is seated in his flying gear lookingout to sea. The sandstone base onwhich he is sitting is carved with theBadges of the squadrons whichparticipated in the Battle of Britain.During the dark days between 10thJuly and 31st October 1940, nearly3000 RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Alliedaircrew flew operationally under RAFFighter Command control. Theirnames are listed on the ChristopherFoxley-Norris Memorial Wall on thesite. The Memorial was unveiled on 9th

...AND IT’S GOODBYE FROM US TOO

The Lledo Collectors Club actually evolvedfrom the Days Gone Collectors Club, whichhad been established by Lledo DiecastModels of London in 1989. The nostalgic‘Days Gone’ model vehicles, usuallyfeaturing brands and advertising frombygone eras, were tremendously popular atthe time and were also widely used bynationwide brands as promotional models, which continues to this day with Hornby. And

for many years, theClub ‘Year Model’was perhaps themost popularcasting of them all -the classic ModelT Ford. Each yearmembers wouldreceive a modelin a differentlivery andfeaturing thedate of issue. However, all

things changeand evolveand theintroductionby Lledo of arange called‘Days Gone

Vanguards’ in 1993 saw the beginnings ofwhat was to be a major change in direction. These fifties and sixties classic models, developed in a recognised scale, rather than‘fit the box’ as Days Gone had been, sparkeda deluge of requests from collectors for morecastings, particularly 1:43 scale cars. Earlymodels include the Morris Traveller, theAustin Seven Mini and the VW Beetle. Marketresearch of the time had shown that thecollector was now looking for moreauthenticity, more detail and more accuratescale models and so Lledo began to developa brand new range of scale models from the1950’s and 1960’s, laying the foundation forthe extensive range you all know and lovetoday. The early models, which includedHillmans, Jowetts, Wolseleys, Rovers,Triumphs, Vauxhalls, Austins, Morrises andJaguars, all notable British marques, were

notable for their keen attentionto detail, which again has been continuedby Hornby Hobbies to this day.Although shipping high volumes of

product and with a growing Collectors Club,Lledo could not compete against low cost, high quality producers in the Far East andsadly, the company went bankrupt in 1999.The naming rights and model range werebought by Corgi in 2002 and, after a shortwhile, it was possible to reinstate the LledoCollectors Club. Not too long after this itmade sense to change the name of the Clubto the Vanguards Collectors Club, whichmore accurately reflected the collectinginterests of the members. Many of you willremember Ray Dowding from this time; formany years Ray managed the Club, firstly onbehalf of Lledo and then Corgi. It was Ray’sidea to launch the exclusive Chrome modelrange, which has just concluded with LCC40Ford Capri Mk1. All good things must cometo an end! Ray still retains a keen interestand sends his regards. Our team here in Rotherham had worked

alongside Ray to in producing the Clubmagazine and when Ray decided to stepdown to focus on his photography (sorry forthe pun!) we were able to take over. One ofthe early changes we made was to introducean exclusive 1:43 scale model as the Club‘Year’ model, a development which was verywell received. Our design team here werealso responsible for the rebranding of theVanguards range for its relaunch by Corgi, producing new packaging designs, point ofsale and catalogues etc.At the beginning of 2007, the Vanguards

brand took a bit of a detour when it wasrenamed as ‘Drivetime’. Some of you mayhave a few magazines in yourcollection from this time. However, theDrivetime route didn’t prove to be apopular one with collectors and Corgidid a smart reverse. We werepleased when Vanguards wasreinstated as a brand for both therange and the Club bySeptember 2007.In May 2008, Hornby

boughtCorgi Classics and sincethat time that there has been ongoing

integration of the ranges andbrands under the HornbyHobbies umbrella. Buses,

trucks, trainsaeroplanes and carsform a impressive and

extensive offering. The years have passed quickly

by with many excellent new modelsjoining the Vanguards ranks, including

European marques, and many collectorstaking an interest in a wider range of theCorgi/Hornby products. For this reason, itonce again made sense to make a changeto the Clubs and The Vanguards CollectorsClub joined with the Corgi Collector at theend of 2011, with a common Club journaland shared access to a wealth ofinformation and offers. Now, as we approach 2015 the Hornby

brand is taking precedence and your Clubwill be known as the Hornby Hobbies Club, covering a wide range of collecting interestsand continuing to offer unique benefits andinsights.Thank you all for your membership; we’ve

enjoyed taking the calls from members inAustralia who have stayed up late to call andorder the latest model, we’ve got to knowsome of you pretty well and on one occasioneven called for medical assistance for amember who had fallen whilst talking to usand couldn’t get up. (Delighted to say hewas fine). So carry on collecting and enjoying this

great hobby; the Hornby Hobbies Club Teamwill be in touch directly with you all with detailsof the new Club structure and benefits so lookout for that and make sure you renew! With kindest regards,Special thanks to Mr Paul Lumsdon,

formerly of Lledo and Corgi, who helpedto develop the original Vanguards rangeand has provided some of thebackground information here.

If you have already read Susan’s ‘goodbye’ feature and the article outlining the changes planned for the Club you will realise that it is ‘goodbye’ from us too as the management of theClub moves inhouse to Hornby Hobbies. So, like Susan, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for your membership, correspondence and, indeed, friendship over the years, whichstretches back to as far as 1999 when we first becameinvolved with what was then known as the LledoCollectors Club. Some of you are still members fromthose early days so thank you for your amazing loyalty.

...and it’sgoodbyefrom us too

Ford Escort Mk2 RS1800, 'EddieStobart' Jimmy McRae andAndy Richardson, Winners,Roger Albert Clark Rally 2006 -VA12608Mention the name ‘Eddie Stobart’ and

most of us will automatically think of thetrucks and trailers which traverse ourcountry’s road network and beyond intocontinental Europe. The distinctive liveryis certainly a familiar sight and hashelped to give the Stobart brand a highlevel of awareness. Did you know that aStobart vehicle makes a deliverysomewhere in Europe every twentyseconds, has 38,000 tyres in use at anyone time, and that the distance coveredby the fleet each day is equivalent to 24laps of the earth?!Here we see that famous livery on a

much smaller scale, applied verysuccessfully to this Ford Escort Mk2which was built by Richard Lepley atPrepfab Motorsport Engineering forJimmy McRae and Stobart OperationsDirector Andy Richardson to contest the2006 Roger Albert Clark Rally. TheRS1800, modelled was finished only twoweeks before the rally and tested inStang Forest by Jimmy andhis son, the late ColinMcRae. Richardremembers Jimmyimpressing on his WorldRally Champion son thatthe car was to returnundamaged; and it did!McRae and Richardson won the event

and the Stobart Group were overjoyedby the publicity, so agreed to sponsoran assault on the 2007 British HistoricRally Championship. The pairing wonCategory 3 of the Championship andcame second in the R.A.C. after beingdelayed by punctures. This is a beautifully detailed model

and a great one to add to yourMotorsport collection, particularly if youalready have some of the Colin McRaeTribute Collection as it represents yetanother link to the career of the late, great. and to date only, British WorldRally Champion.

BMW (E30) 325i MotorsportConvertible, Macau Blue -VA13701AWho would belive that the stunning

325i MotorsportConvertiblemodelled heredates back to theearly 1980’s? Eventoday, the E30,which was the secondgeneration of BMW’s popular 3 Seriesrange is still turn a headturner! The E30 was announced at the end of

1982 but the convertible represented byour model was built in-house by BMW,unlike the previous model, and was notannounced until 1985.Cast your mind back to 1985 for a

moment; the average house price inBritain was £40,169, a gallon of petrolcost £1.88 and at the year end the Bankof England Interest Rate was running ata staggering 11.38%! The year has alsoseen considerable turmoil; although theBritish Coal Miners strike had just endedthe closure of the pits continued so themood in the country was not light. It was actually to the heart of mining

country that this rare Motorsport edition

325i wasbrought, to Sheffield in South

Yorkshire. Number 21 of 250, only 149 ofwhich were shipped to the UK and thecar was first registered on the 5th March1991 to Kevin V. Nightingale in Sheffield. It still carries the number plate hespecified at the original dealer,Hallamshire Motor Co. Ltd - H15 KVN. These Motorsport Technology cars

featured sports seats, MSportSuspension, a subtle M-Tech 2 bodykitand a limited-slip differential. Currentowner, Surrey-based enthusiast RichardLake, purchased this remarkably originalexample in October 2009 from AngliaCar Auctions and, after havingpreventative maintenance carried out byBMW specialist Classic Heroes, uses the car on specialoccasions. It has still only covered

32,000 miles from new so isa superb example.

Although not as overtlysporting as the Cosworth butsubtle and discreet, the Mk3Turbo was superbly wellequipped and could hold itsown against the Bosworth’space and traction. It had the

added benefit of undercutting Ford’smarket leader by several thousandpounds. However, it never sold as wellas expected; the Cosworth had alreadystolen a march and the Mk3 was a lateraddition to the market with no motorsport pedigree. new Bentley Continental models - itreminds me of the times years ago whencollectors could buy a model of the carthat Dad had! A beautiful car to make amodel of and what a great job Corgiappear to have made of it.

Club Member Bob DuffieldThank you for detailing the Club’s

imminent administration changes andthe effect on the current Club team. Youhave always shown great enthusiasm forthe club through your articles which Ihave enjoyed reading. Good luck in yourretirement and do not work too hard onyour allotment! Best wishes, Bob.

Thanks Bob. I plan to have

the best allotment in the City ofNewcastle in 2015!

Stephen Lanzilla of theBoston Area Toy CollectorsClub, MA.Susan, you and I have mingled

with some "interesting" people overthe years. You will always be

our beacon! Your name came up veryfrequently at our recent 14th AnnualConvention to honour the best firms andthe people behind them. Club membersand Corgi enthusiasts Bob Porcja, JimSlattery, August 'Gus' Niewenhous III,Greg Sullivan and Nicholas Caci all askabout you and when I thought you’dreturn to one of our national events as aspeaker. As Nick's mom is British (hislate dad was stationed in the US Navy inthe UK), Nick has a long fondness for allthings British. Please keep in touch.

You never know,Stephen. I might

come over as part of my ‘Book Tour’ as theycall it! The BATCC are all such a great crowd!

Dear Editor. Wehear with some sadness, that youwill no longer be the interface betweenHornby and Corgi Collector Clubmembers, when the Club is taken in-house in January. It was you that wasthere when the Club started and thirty

years on, you have still been there torespond to all our queries and fulfil ourneed for information, on all things Corgi, past and present. You and I have hadour moments but I have enjoyed our‘fights’ and you have appreciated mytotal passion for Corgi in your diplomaticand informed responses You can ‘retire’ now with head held

high. You have represented and foughtfor our views and needs since the Clubstarted and over all the years since. I amsure lots of people, like myself, appreciate all that you have done forCorgi Club members, past and present. You will be a very hard act to follow,Susan. Regards John J Ford, Member 3280, Brisbane.
