The examples we used when deciding on our designs

Front CoverTwo versions of her advert

When we analysed these adverts, we decided to base our product on the second example as we thought it gave more information and was overall a better advert to look at and to attract our target audience.

Back Cover

There is a link with the pictures featured on the front and back cover with the lungs so we therefore made sure that something on our front cover had to be on our back cover, in this case it was the ringleader (relating to our circus theme).

For our front cover we used an image that related to the video concept.

In our opening scenes of the video, it shows three of the main characters in a barn. We thought that this composition looked good and therefore used it as our front cover.

We then superimposed the ringleader on top of us to create the impression that he is half there, half not (a feeling that runs throughout the video). We thought that by doing this to our front cover made it look more interesting to look at and the bright colours would attract the target audience.

When creating our Digipak, we used a feature on Photoshop called the ‘burn tool’. This enabled us to put a black border around our pages and add to the effect of an old-fashioned design, similar to what you could associate with the circus. I also thought the burn tool made our final product look more professional.

By having this effect made a link to the borders we had on our advert highlighting that they are part of a combination of products.

From researching Florence + The Machine’s products, we noticed that on her front cover and the image used in her advert were the same. We thought this was effective as you knew the two products were linked and that whatever was on her album would be what was featured on her tour (what her advert was promoting).

Because of this, we took this idea and placed our front cover of our Digipak as the focal point of our advert. The intended audience would then know then know that the advert was advertising the re-release of Florence’s album, ‘Lungs’.

Would the audience know they are part of a package?

Also by highlighting the theme of a circus throughout the main product and the ancillary texts may draw in the intended audience if they like this design and find it interesting.

By including the main (and most successful) singles that Florence has released on the advert highlights information that the audience may know about. This will attract them to the product and may influence them to buy the product.

We included the ‘Heavy in your Arms’ single as it is the newest single she has released from her re-released version of her album.

Although it may not be her most successful single, it was used for the Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack which has a big fan base that is our target age group. It is also the same type of indie genre like Florence so it may therefore attract an audience that may not usually look for Florence but have an interest in Twilight.

Improvements

Our initial thoughts to this was that it would be an underlying feature that wouldn’t necessarily stand out to the audience until they looked at it properly, however, we thought that this would make the product more interesting to look at knowing that there is more to it than what you first think.

On our front cover we spelt the title of our single, ‘Dog Days Are Over’ in the hay that was in the background. We used the red and white striped tape that we had used in our video to link the products together and to relate to the circus theme.

However...

It did not necessarily relate to the advert and the fact that it was promoting the entire album, not just one song.

Because of this point, if I were to do this product again it may have been more effective if we had spelt out ‘Lungs’ and therefore relating to the main product and the other ancillary text.

By spelling out ‘Dog Days Are Over’ specified the Digipak to the one single in the music video.
