Quest 825 captain Deo Patalinghog cringes when asked about his participation in an upcoming multisport event. “Nope, I’m not racing that. This is crazy. My expenses are through the roof. It has come to the point that I may just have to loan money in order to race. No way man, my family will always come first.”

That in a nutshell encapsulates the prevailing philosophy of Quest 825, albeit with a semi-serious streak of vitriol. It’s a delicate task to somehow reconcile the nuances of intense athletic training with an 8-5 job, no pun intended. Wait, maybe this time it actually was. The “825” in the team moniker connotes the daily executive grind, a lingering reminder of the real-world challenges every age-group (meaning amateur) triathlete faces. “Quest” represents the never-ending quest for athletic excellence, camaraderie, and the thrill of competition.

Comprised of an eclectic mix of veteran endurance athletes and running habitués , the team was driven by a singular philosophy that served as an essential point of commonality amongst its competitive core While some compete for leisure or merely to finish, the team approaches it as a challenge for personal growth. Triathlon and cycling are mostly individual sports operating under the subtext of a team concept, so it’s pretty easy to measure performance from a progressive standpoint.

It is this competitive mindset that has allowed the team to be a pocket force to be reckoned with even in its relatively nascent stage of existence. Having competed in the biggest multi-sport and cycling races both here and abroad, the team has acquitted itself decently in the face of stiff, veteran competition. The team’s philosophy is predicated not so much for finish-ing on the podium or putting in a strong time, but in redefining personal limits each and every time they compete.

Triathlon, Cycling, Family and Faith. Big idealistic concepts that sound good on paper yet ac-tually lie on a solid foundation bought to fruition by both idealism and circumstance. Just take team captain Deo’s word on it. “We won’t say the best is yet to come. We’re just going to work very hard, as a team, to make it happen.”

Undisputably the top tri-athlete and cyclist of Quest 825, Erick bucked a major injury in 2011 to emerge as one of the best age group triath-letes in the country to-day. Several sensational finishes have garnered the attention of not a few in the community, and his multiple podium fin-ishes are a testament to a work ethic which most acknowledge is next to none. In addition, he is also the lone member to compete in the elite Cat-egory 3/Executive A divi-sions of the local execu-tive cycling leagues. His insatiable drive for self-improvement serves as an inspiration for the team to take it to the next lev-el, and his leadership is a veritable benchmark for future heads of the team to emulate.

Quest 825’s unassuming team manager is one of the driving forces behind its success. A certified coach by the Internation-al Triathlon Union (ITU), he backs up his theory with practice as reflect-ed by his stint at the in-augural Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Las Vegas, part of the first Filipino delegation to compete at the said event. His lighthearted demeanor is a huge hit with his teammates, and his propensity to dis-pense out whatever is needed to keep the team moving forward makes him the epitome of under-stated leadership and a tough act to follow for future successors.

As the prevailing marketing manager of the team, Luis was able to coalesce the needed resources to fund the team’s campaign from both private and corpo-rate sponsors. On the athletic front, even as his once-promising sea-son was marred by inju-ries and work-related is-sues he was able to hold it all together for one last race as he “made his-tory” by unofficially be-coming the first Filipino to finish a 100- mile road race and a full Iron-dis-tance triathlon in the same season.

All that was forgotten as the Philippine distance re-cord holder for Vibram Five Fingers put togeth-er a race for the ages in a smashing finish at the Timex 226 full iron-dis-tance race in Bohol.
