Secret Spitfires

The Friends of Chippenham Museum have arranged a showing of this fascinating documentary film, which will include a Q&A session with Norman Parker, history advisor for the film and WWII Spitfire engineer.

Secret Spitfires is the remarkable story of how WWII Spitfire fighter aircraft were built in secret right in the heart of Southern England.

It has taken 75 years for this story to come to light. It tells of how hundreds of girls, boys, women, elderly men and a handful of engineers built the iconic fighter plane the Spitfire, in secret, hidden in sheds, depots, garages, barns and even a hotel. So hidden, Hitler’s spies couldn’t find them and have them bombed.

Proceeds will be going to military charities and the Friends of Chippenham Museum.

Hazel O’Connor

Lost Voice Guy: I’m Only In It For The Parking

The first major female star of the 80s, Hazel O’Connor’s ageless songs include Eighth Day, Will You, and If Only. Returning to the Neeld after a sell-out performance in 2017, Hazel will be accompanied by Clare Hirst (The Belle Stars, Communards, David Bowie) on sax and vocals and Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics) on keyboards and vocals.

Due to popular demand following a sell-out tour in spring 2019, Lee Ridley (aka Lost Voice Guy) – the first comedian ever to win Britain’s Got Talent – is back on the road this autumn. His cutting edge material combines the political and personal with razor-sharp observations about disability and daily life.

Talk

One of the Second World War’s most fascinating stories is that of the Enigma machine, a portable encryption device widely used by the Germans, whose ciphers they believed to be totally secure. Nevertheless, by mathematical analysis and modern technology (and a certain amount of good luck), the Allies devised techniques for ‘breaking’ Enigma ciphers, and thus read several million German messages, providing a wealth of reliable Intelligence.

Having delivered over 300 presentations, Dr Baldwin is currently one of Britain’s most experienced speakers on the Enigma machine and the work of the WW2 codebreakers.

After the presentation, the audience are invited to take part in a hands-on practical demonstration of one of the few surviving Enigma machines. Only about 300 are known to survive worldwide; of these, only about a dozen are in public collections in Britain.
