Calne Bike Meet 2015This year’s Calne Bike Meet event is held between 24th and 25th July.

Please come and join us at our campsite from 7pm on Friday 24th July 2015 at Beversbrook Farm, Calne. We have a large bar and live bands and an acoustic tent all weekend.

From 10am on Saturday 25th July in the town centre the bikes will take over. There will be owner’s clubs, stalls and traders all around the town pedalling their wares and goods.

At 4pm, the town will rattle and vibrate to the sound of hundreds of motorcycles all warming up to roll out on an official ride out. A 40 minute loop will see us winging our way back into Beversbrook Farmwhere the evening’s music kicks off again ’till 12pm.

So do stay with us and enjoy the live bands and we can all spend a little more time together without the need to push off home early. Please remember events Friday/Saturday night, and in the town on Saturday, are all FREE to non-campers and you can catch the X55 bus to our main gate or if you are driving/riding, we have a car/bike park on the site. Thank you for your support to keep this running here in Calne.

We are looking for marshals for this event so if you’d love to help out for just a few hours on any of the days, please ring us on 07546 517665. In return for your help you will get free camping all weekend and free merchandise.

Walking the Himalayas to overcome cancerHelen Pyne, 45 years of age from Gastard in Wiltshire, was devastated when she received the life changing diagnosis that she had breast cancer in March 2012. To help her come to terms with this cruel disease and get through the darker days following, Helen took up walking – and discovered that she loved it! Her treatment at the Royal United Hospital has since been successful and has taken part in a number of walking events. On the 30th October she will be lacing up her well-used walking boots to hike for five days through the foothills of the Himalayas as part of The Forever Friends Appeal’s trekking team. Helen is raising funds for the RUH’s Cancer Care Campaign, to give something back after the wonderful treatment and care she has received.

Helen describes her inspirational journey so far and how she’s preparing for the walk of a lifetime: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer on the 20th March 2012 at the RUH – and it brought me to my knees. However, even with the scary diagnosis of cancer, I was fortunate to only needed a lumpectomy as my lymph nodes were clear. I had the op on the 2nd May 2012 and then went on to four weeks of radiotherapy, so I got to know the RUH Oncology department fairly well!

One week after my op I gave up smoking for good on the 9th May 2012, two years to the day after I lost my Dad to smoking-related cancer. Due to not having cigarettes and the awful tamoxifen used to treat my cancer, I started putting on weight. I needed to do something to get myself out of the doldrums to help my mental recovery as well as get moving, so started walking and I found that I love it. I was never really a runner but one day while walking my black labrador Hector, I just decided to go that little bit further, then every day we did the same. We now do 4+ miles daily and at times we can be gone for anything up to 8 miles on a nice evening!”

Walking has become Helen’s way to say thank you to all the staff that helped and cared for her throughout treatment and give a little bit back. She explains: “The

staff in the oncology department and the breast unit are wonderful people but are working in very tired surroundings, the buildings are so old and depressing which makes a scary time in people’s lives seem even darker.

In February 2013, I came across an advert for The Forever Friends Appeal’s Walk of Life and along with 9 friends completed the 21 miles in May and then again the following May raising over £4,000 for the new Cancer Centre. This year I wanted something different, more of a challenge and saw last year’s Great Wall of China walk for the Appeal and thought – YES! So here I am, getting ready to go to India for the Himalayas Trek later this year. I have never done anything quite like this before and I do like my creature comforts and hate having dirty hands! But for five days in November I won’t even have a loo to use let alone a sink to wash in – yikes! It’s going to be one hell of a challenge, but what an experience.”

Departing in October 2015, The Forever Friends Appeal’s India Dalai Lama challenge, in association with Global Adventure Challenges, is to trek for 67km over five days through this fascinating region of North India at the heart of the world’s highest mountain range. Trekkers will have the unique opportunity to explore the Kingdom of Gaddi passing through traditional Hindu settlements, Buddhist Monasteries, pine forests and even a glacier with spectacular views of the Himalayan mountains. This incredible challenge will end with time to explore the incomparable Taj Mahal.

Fun 4 All receives donation from Sainsbury'sSainsbury’s Chippenham has donated £180 to Fun 4 All as part of its support for the local community.

The donation will be used to towards future days out. Funded through the Sainsbury’s Community Budget scheme, it was set up to help charitable groups in the local community and is partially funded by sales of the retailer’s ‘Bag for Life’. So for customers at Sainsbury’s Chippenham this means that they are not only making an environmental choice, they are also contributing to their local community.

Store Manager Paul Gunter said: ‘Our store is at the heart of the local community and is important we can play our part to support it. When we met Fun 4 All and heard their story, we just wanted to help to help out as much as we could”.

This year, Sainsbury’s has donated over £600,000 to local charities and community groups as part of the Community Budget scheme.

SALESponsors of Chippenham Half Marathon hand over cash to Wiltshire Air Ambulance

Business owners John and Debbie Williams, of John Williams Heating Services, have handed over a cheque for £3,000 to one of Wiltshire’s most valued charities.

John and Debbie were invited to the charity’s base in Devizes because John Williams Heating Services is a sponsor of the annual Chippenham Half Marathon. Wiltshire Air Ambulance was the event’s official charity in 2014 and organisers handed over the money along with the main sponsors of last year’s event.

Debbie Williams, who is herself a keen runner, said: “We were all very proud be asked to give this donation to Wiltshire Air Ambulance which provides such a vital service across our county. We’re equally proud to sponsor our local half marathon which is a wonderful community event, growing in stature each year.”

The Chippenham Half Marathon takes place each September and John Williams Heating Services is a main sponsor for 2015. This year’s official charity is Dorothy House Hospice Care but runners interested in the event can raise money for their favourite charity if they prefer. Pam Marchant ArtPam Marchant has lived in Wiltshire for many years, apart from a few spent just over the border in Oxfordshire! She has been painting and drawing since childhood, until finally turning professional last year.

Days Out

IF you’re looking for an outing this summer, then you might like to visit Sevington Victorian

School. It’s a delightful little village school, not far from Leigh Delamere, which has survived untouched since it closed, a hundred years ago. You can still see the original teacher’s high desk and chair, the long pupils’ benches, the oil lamp and the books and objects used by the pupils in Victorian times.

The school teacher, Miss Elizabeth Squire, presided over the schoolroom for more than sixty years and when she retired, in 1913, she turned the key in the lock and retreated to the school house to live out the rest of her days. And there things stayed, just as she’d left them, for the next seventy years.

Today Sevington is open to primary schools, who bring their pupils to take part in historical re-enactments of a Victorian school day. The children dress up in costume and arrive, clutching their Victorian lunch bags, to be met by the stern Miss Squire and her sister, Miss Hannah. In the quiet schoolroom, where the only sound is the ticking clock, Miss Squire introduces the children to Victorian penmanship, and sums with pounds shillings and pence, while Miss Hannah, oversees boot cleaning in the kitchen and candle making in the parlour. The children learn to chant their tables, address the schoolmistress as ma’am and remember their deportment. And, strange though it may seem, most of them love the experience and still remember it years later.

Sevington is a very well kept secret and until recently members of the public had few opportunities to see inside it. This year, thanks to a Lottery Grant it is open to visitors every Sunday afternoon until September. Admission is free and volunteers are on hand to show people round the schoolroom with

its slates and inkwells and portraits of Queen Victoria. On some Sundays, there may be a chance to meet Miss Squire and learn more about her teaching methods. Home made teas are served in the schoolhouse parlour, and visitors can inspect the kitchen, with its cast iron range, and walk in the little Victorian garden.

There’s something for all the family at Sevington. Access is easy with parking available just outside the school. There are some steps but visitors with limited mobility generally find them manageable, given time and a helping arm. For children, there are traditional toys

to play with, and a chance to dress up as a Victorian school child.

On July 12th Miss Squire will be holding her Sports Day. Children are invited to come along and take part in traditional events including a Victorian style dressing up race. On 16th August children and adults can take part in the Great Sevington Sewing Bee and the school will be open during Heritage Weekend, Saturday and Sunday 12th and 13th September.

Cherhill School Sing-Up Choir at Summer Fete

Cherhill School Sing-Up Choir will be the star attraction at this year’s Cherhill Village Fete being held in the Manor Gardens on Saturday 18 July.

The lawns of the Manor House will be packed with games, stalls and attractions for a fun-filled family afternoon starting at 2.00pm when the fete will be officially opened by Mr James Gray, the local Member of Parliament for North Wiltshire

There’ll be competitions, games, a raffle with great prizes, tombola, plus a host of stalls including crafts, books, honey and jewellery. The Cherhill Gardening Club will be selling plants for you to stock up your garden. Plans are also in hand for a bouncy castle and pony rides. There will be a licensed bar and BBQ open all afternoon, as well as tea and a myriad of cakes, sweets and ice creams to feast on.

The festivities will start at 2pm and go on until 4pm. Admission is free with all the money from events and games going to the St James Church maintenance and refurbishment fund.

The Taming of the ShrewFor their 27th season, Shakespeare Live have chosen the ever-popular yet controversial comedy ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, for seven performances at Lackham House, Lacock, from July 6th-11th.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance

Wiltshire has a second ‘mini’ air ambulanceTWO people who were airlifted by Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) have helped aviation enthusiast Sean Devine make a model helicopter which will help to raise money for the charity. The model is identical to Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Bell 429 helicopter, complete in the yellow and Wiltshire green livery and even has pilot and paramedic figures inside. It is almost 6ft long and weighs 8kg.

Sean, 50, of Upavon, has built remote controlled model aircraft for the last 16 years and when he heard of WAA’s brand new helicopter he decided to build a replica model. He enlisted the help of former WAA patients Dave Grace, 50, of Market Lavington, who paint sprayed the colours and Gareth Steele, who runs Steele Signs in Durrington, and who undertook the writing on the model helicopter. Dave was one of the first patients airlifted by WAA after a road traffic collision near Marden in April 1990. Gareth, 39, was airlifted by WAA following a motocross accident at Everleigh on Salisbury Plain about 12 years ago.

Sean, a self-employed painter and decorator, is taking his model to display at events, such as talks and shows, and collect donations for WAA. He said: “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a fantastic service that needs to be supported. I think most people in Wiltshire knows someone who has been airlifted by the helicopter. I have taken the model helicopter to a

couple of events and everyone who has seen it says it is amazing. I’ve built many model helicopters over the years but there’s something about this one that gives me goosebumps. I think the hardest part was the paint job. Dave has done an amazing job in spraying it. Thanks to everyone who supported me including Budd Boulton, of Pewsey, who supplied the model helicopter at cost price.”

Sean bought the model kit and Dave and Gareth did their work on it for free. When Sean received the kit the original colours were black and gold so he sanded it down and primed it. Dave, a professional paint sprayer and panel beater, said: “It was a lengthy job and the scale of the model helicopter probably made it one of the trickiest jobs I have undertaken. I was more than happy to do it when Sean asked me.” Gareth said: “It was really good to be involved. It’s nice to do a bit more than just put money in a collection pot and to be able to use my skill to good effort. I was surprised at how big the model is. It looks fantastic.”

For the majority of the time the model helicopter will be static at events but Sean hopes to fly it on occasions. He also plans to have a Facebook page where he will post the events it will be attending.

Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Fundraising Manager at WAA, said: “The model Bell 429 helicopter is astonishing in its attention to detail and is a stunning replica of our helicopter. The work done by Sean, Dave and Gareth at their own cost is very generous. “We are truly grateful to Sean, Dave and Gareth. The people of Wiltshire often come up with innovative ways of raising money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance and this is one great example.”

ODETTE is the first lady funeral director in Calne. Odette started

her career in the funeral industry 15 years ago. She gained her Diploma in Funeral Directing in 2007 a recognised professional qualification through the National Association of Funeral Directors.

Since then she has been the recognised face on funerals since that time. When asked why she wanted to become a Funeral Director, Odette said, “I have wanted to be a Funeral Director since the age of 14 years old. I felt that I could give the families and deceased the care and respect that they deserve. I feel that this is a very important position and requires the utmost respect”.

Odette will be carrying out all the work involved from collection of the deceased into her care, right through to the funeral arrangements and even fits the coffins out and dresses the deceased.

Odette continues, “I believe the people of Calne and surrounding areas have a right to an excellent service provided by a Funeral Director that lives within the community to which they serve.”

Odette is by no means exempt from bereavement herself. When she first qualified her first duty was to conduct the funeral for her grandmother. She says, “It was an enormous privilege to carry out the arrangements and conduct on the day. It really does bring home to you the amount of trust and faith that a family places with you.” Odette then had to arrange and conduct her mum’s funeral in September of last year. Again Odette says, “every funeral is different and every funeral brings with it different feelings, I carried out everything right down to registration and on a positive note this really did give me experience of what families have to go through”.

Her premises in Calne have been fitted out to a very high standard and they are very warm and welcoming. Her feature wall is causing something of a stir in the town, she adds “I have tried to come away from a stereotypical Funeral Director’s premises. I wanted an office that people would feel comfortable to come in to. So much so that people are popping in for a chat and a look round and to read the poem on the wall”.

Her vision for the future is to have her daughters work with her. A truly independent family business.

MAUD HEATH VINEYARD scooped a bronze Sommelier Wine Award

recently for their Bramble Hill Rosé. It was one of only two still English rosé wines to win a medal at the SWA international wine competition.

England gained a record 47 medals in the SWA awards this year, the majority of these were sparkling wines but it is promising to see still wines such as Maud Heath Bramble Hill Rosé emerging with medals on the international platform.

Team leader Annette Scarfe MW found good minerals and complexity in this example, while Mya Brown of Vinoteca Marylebone highlighted its 'punchy, fruity body’.

Vineyard Manager, Dominic Bateman said, “It is wonderful to receive an accolade like this, after all the hard work that has gone into this project. Most

The Bramble Hill Rosé was named after the area of Bremhill where the vineyard is based, once renowned for the abundance of bramble bushes, historically it originates from the term ‘Bramble Hill’.

The rosé also achieved a silver medal at the UKVA (United Kingdom Vineyard Association) awards last year, there are now in excess of 600 vineyards within the UK, but only four rosé wines were featured in the programme and on the tables including Maud Heath Bramble Hill Rosé at the awards ceremony.

Do you know your factor 8’s from your factor 30’s and your UVA protection from

your UVB? Browsing a display of sunscreens can certainly be confusing, so here’s a little help.

First to the basics: how do sunscreens work? Sunscreens, also commonly referred to as sun block, sun tan lotion and sun cream, are products which contain a combination of ingredients which help to prevent the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin.

There are two types of radiation, UVA has longer wavelengths and can cause lasting skin damage, skin aging and skin cancer, because they are not absorbed by the ozone layer and so can penetrate skin deeply, potentially causing the most harm. UVB has shorter waves, is partially absorbed by the ozone layer but can still cause sunburn and also skin damage and skin cancer.

Most products focus on protecting against UVB rays, but those that describe themselves as broad spectrum provide protection against UVA and UVB. Sunscreens both absorb and reflect the sun’s harmful rays.

You will see the expression ‘sun protection factor (SPF)’ on products. This is a measure of the products ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. For example if your skin would usually start to redden in the sun after 10 minutes, using a sunscreen with a factor of 30 suggests that you will not redden until you have been in the sun for 30 times as long as that which is 300 minutes. You should remember that this is only a guide. You will also find additional guidance about which factor to choose depending on how fair your skin is as the fairer you are the faster you will generally burn. The time of day you are out will also have an impact. For example protection won’t be as good if

you are exposed to full strength mid day sun compared to early morning rays. You should also remember that you will need to reapply sunscreens regularly throughout the day.

There are a huge range of products to choose from. Sunscreens now come in lotions, creams, gels and oils. Many have additional ingredients to make them smell nicer, be water resistant, show up as a colour or be easy to rub in. There are also special varieties developed for the face and lips.

One final thing to remember is that certain health conditions and medications can make a person more sensitive to sun exposure, so you might need to use a higher SPF if on antibiotics or antihistamines for example. If you are on medication it is best to seek professional advice.

WE HAVE A NEW Receptionist who has joined the Practice, her

name is Summer. Since she’s been working here she has had so many comments from patients about her lovely name, which is so pretty. It’s quite apt that as soon as she joined the team we have been having such lovely sunny weather. I am sure it is just a co-incidence but it’s a nice one. So, in fact, Summer has come to Beversbrook in more ways than one and both are very welcome indeed.

If you are travelling abroad for your holidays you may need travel vaccinations to protect you from serious diseases found in other parts of the world, such as yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A. Many countries, such as Africa, won’t accept travellers who have not been adequately vaccinated. Some vaccinations require more than one dose over a period of time, so it is well worth doing your homework and planning in advance. You can find out if the country you are visiting requires you to have travel vaccinations by visiting the NHS Fit for Travel website www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk. This handy website also provides information about personal safety and food and water precautions you may need to take whilst on your holiday.

Travel vaccinations can be obtained through your GP Practice by booking an appointment with your Practice Nurse, but there are also some private clinics locally that may also be able to help you. Some travel vaccinations are not free on the NHS and so a fee may be charged, you should be informed of the price of the vaccination before your appointment.

Whether you are travelling at home or abroad, if you are on any regular medication you may wish to check that you have enough supply to last you throughout your holiday and for at least one week after your return home. It is advised to keep a small supply of your routine medication at home, as you would be surprised how many people leave their tablets behind in a hotel room etc. If you are travelling for a long time or your medication is not on repeat your GP will need to consider factors prior to agreeing the prescription, such as the type of medication you are taking, if it is needed and the risks of supplying larger quantities than usual. If you need regular monitoring such as blood tests, you should obtain advice regarding monitoring arrangements from your GP accordingly.

If you are travelling abroad you may also need to check what medication you can take into the country you are visiting.

Some medicines which are available in the UK may be controlled in other countries, such as strong painkillers like diamorphine. For these medicines you will need to make special arrangements to take them abroad, which may include a letter from your GP. The NHS Choices website will be able to provide more information about whether or not you can take your medicine on holiday and what to do if there are restrictions. Don’t forget all medicines should travel in their original packaging and preferably in your suitcase.

If you are given any medication whilst you are away you should ask the dispensing pharmacist or doctor if it is legal to bring it back into the UK. If you‘re in any doubt it is best to declare it at customs when you return.

I am sure you are more organised than I am and have already booked and organised your Summer holiday. It’s nearly August and my plans have got no further than simply booking the time off work. Having not arranged any flights to a hot destination abroad, I may end up having a ‘staycation’ if I am not careful. Mind you, I won’t be too upset with the notion of staying at home for the holidays if this sunny weather continues. The added bonus of holidaying in Wiltshire is that I know all the good picnic spots with the best views and all the restaurants with the yummiest menu’s, I speak the lingo and don’t need any jabs before I leave ….sounds like the perfect holiday, now to persuade the family!

Tattoo TipsTattoos are on the increase. The number of studios has doubled in the last ten years and 29% of Brits aged 16-44 now boast an inking. So with over 1,500 studios to choose from, how do you decide?

First thing to do is choose an artist whose artistic style and ability match your expectations. Be sure to look through their portfolio and check on the quality and consistency of their work. Do you like their designs? Are the lines steady, the shading smooth and the colours solid? According to a 2003 study, 75% of people who get tattoos go on to regret it, so it’s important to do some serious homework before making that all important decision. After all, tattoos are very difficult, painful and expensive to remove!

Safety comes next. Make sure the studio and the tattoo artist are both registered with the local council. This is a legal requirement and they should have certificates proving their status. Certification assures certain basic standards of cleanliness and hygiene of premises, equipment and the individual performing the work. Check there is a current Health and Safety Certificate on display and that the artist wears gloves and uses new needles for each customer.

Follow these simple guidelines and you should maximise your chances of a safe and successful inking experience!

Why Floss?You might clean your teeth religiously twice a day and feel that you are doing all you can to keep your gnashers looking and feeling clean and fresh, but if you fail to include flossing as part of your daily dental routine, you are only doing just over half the job.

Every tooth has five surfaces, and brushing only gets to three of them (the top/bottom, back and front). If you don’t floss, it leaves the two side surfaces unclean and potentially subject to disease.

Food and sticky bacteria, commonly known as plaque, lodge in the space between teeth. If left, plaque generates acid which can cause cavities, irritate gums and eventually lead to gum disease. Gum disease isn’t pretty. It eats away at gums and teeth and in advanced forms even attacks the bones that support the teeth and the lower third of the face.

Floss is the only thing that can get into the space between teeth to remove these harmful bacteria. If done before brushing, flossing can expose a larger area for the fluoride in the toothpaste to act upon.The best way to care for your teeth is to combine plaque removal through flossing and brushing with chemical cleaning via toothpaste and mouth wash.

explore it and capture its beauty. Favourite locations of mine include the hills at Pewsey, Roundway and Cherhill, the woodlands at Savernake and West Woods, and Shearwater Lake, to name a few.

These places are also home to a huge amount of wildlife which is just as fun to photograph as the landscapes themselves. With the summer now here you can expect to see an influx of butterflies and insects, many species of birds with their fledglings, and lesser seen species such as hedgehogs and bats too.

WE’VE ALL DONE IT (although I haven’t done it for many years now). Back in my younger days I was obsessed with it. I

made many mistakes. It cost me a fortune. And I never admitted the full cost of these mistakes even to MYSELF, let alone my husband! What am I talking about?CHOOSING COLOURS USING TESTER POTS!It starts with a vision for the room to be decorated.An idea of the wall colours required to create this vision are imagined - and it’s a quick trip to the nearest DIY shed or paint store to grab some paint charts. Looking at them in store is no good – no one lights their home with fluorescent strip lights! So, the charts are taken home and pondered over for hours. Bending them, folding them, even carefully peeling the little chips off the backing card so that they can be viewed in isolation, in an attempt to gain insight into what the colour will look like when it’s covering a whole wall. Finally 3 or 4 colours are filtered out as possibilities. So it’s a trolley dash back to the shop or a quick hop on the internet. Whilst purchasing the tester pots, another colour catches the eye as a possible solution and, with a deft manoeuvre that’s hardly visible to the naked eye, that’s in the basket too – just in case! £20.00 later, (maybe more) not to mention the cost of fuel (or delivery) and time, the moment of truth arrives. The tester pots are in the house and ready for colour testing. At this point don’t be tempted to paint patches on the wall - it’s a guaranteed way to cheese off your decorator…for a number of reasons:1. However neatly those patches are painted on the wall – and there can be a tendency to STAB the paint on leaving THICK brushmarks – they create a layer of uneven paint, the ‘ghost’ of which is going to ‘haunt’ the wall forever more without some serious extra

preparation to bring the surface back to its flat state2. Once those blobs are up on the wall, your space is spoilt – it’s no longer a room that you’re GOING to decorate – it is now a work in progress – a constant reminder that there’s work to be done – not relaxing

3. To truly see a colour, you need to see how the light reacts with it on every wall, in the corners, against the furniture, against the floor – this can’t be done if the blob of paint is dabbed in one place.4. Once painted on the wall, the colours are in a fixed order. To see the ‘truth’ in a colour it helps to change the viewing order. A colour may seem blue when neighboured by cream, but put it alongside another blue and any undertones present in

the colour will be instantly visible - a hint of green, a touch of purple or a grey hue.SO WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?Painting the tester pots onto a piece of card overcomes some of the problems above.When doing this, it can be helpful to:1. Use a thick, white water-board so that it doesn’t ‘warp’ once dry (not the inside of a cornflake packet!)2. Use a roller rather than a brush as that’s what will be used for painting the walls, it will give a truer representation of the final finish3. Out with the Old – (then back in!)I AM A HOARDER.

I cling stubbornly onto all manner of things, just in case they"come in useful!" (and funnily enough, they usually do.)

I am a menace to myself at any fete or school fair, being totally out of control at the first sight of a "white elephant" table piled high with someone's old junk or discarded bric a brac. Books, cracked ornaments, plastic flowers, even ancient old toys, all fill me with delight, and I proudly carry my "trophies" home, well aware of Fred's first words when I walk through the door. His greeting varies little on each occasion, going from, "NOT more rubbish!" to a kind of sighing, "What the hell have you bought now?"

I'll be honest though, and admit that the majority of second (or third, fourth, and maybe even fifth) hand bits and bobs I have gleefully paid just pence for, washed, polished, and wrapped in pretty paper, do make lovely presents on the tree at Christmas, and birthday gifts the rest of the year. (Whoops! Given myself away there haven't I?)

"Tarting" up plain tablecloths, headscarves or T-shirts by painting on them with fabric paints is an enjoyable hobby when I feel a bit jaded by painting in watercolours or oils, and at least I'm certain of an original design. A group of wild flowers painted on a dark green velvet cushion cover looks quite beautiful when edged with gold outliner, and canal-barge scenes and flowers look very authentic on an old kettle or tea pot.

But this year I have been experiencing something never felt before.

I looked around me one morning, and decided to de-clutter! (Yes, I know. It was a hell of a shock to ME too!)

It was also an eye opener to me as I sat among the debris I'd just tipped out of a drawer onto the floor.

What amazed me most was HOW I had managed to cram so much into drawers you would swear were too small to hold such a stack.

The other amazing experience was the "secret" thought I kept to myself as I rooted amongst the "rubbish". I was wondering what had prompted me to buy such junk in the first place. (I could well imagine how Fred would crow if I confessed I too was finally fed up of clutter!)

As it turned out though, Fred thought he was witnessing a major miracle, and was too afraid of breaking the spell if he allowed even a tiny "crow". He wandered about the house like a man sleepwalking, but couldn't resist peering into whatever room I was busily filling bin bags from, as though checking to see if the "dream" was continuing, or had I reverted to type and was filling drawers instead of emptying them.

I couldn't believe what I was doing either, because prior to this sudden wave of de-cluttering that had hit me with the force of a tsunami, I was "into" clutter in a big way. I could've cluttered for England and brought home the "gold". I knew where I was with clutter, and I knew where everything was – well,

almost everything! It was familiar, like an old friend, and having all my stuff around me made me feel secure and comfortable. The fact we hadn't seen the dining table for over 6 months due to the stacks of half finished paintings, tubes of watercolours, and sketch pads by the score, didn't cause me any grief, but every so often, steam would come from Fred's ears, and he would loudly complain that he would just occasionally LIKE to see if the table was still under "all that mess!"

Now, a few weeks after my initial urge to clear the clutter, we have space where you can walk across the lounge without tripping up or bruising your ankles on piles of books etc.left on the floor. Fred has been very busy decorating our dingy kitchen too. The multi-coloured tiles have been replaced by a sea of pale smoky blue, and the cheerful lemon walls have taken the place of the dark yellow of before. A new kitchen dresser and a new fridge have replaced the old built-in cupboard and drawers, and the creaking fridge-freezer. A victorian plate rack is where a cupboard kept most of the daylight out of the kitchen, and the room is now light and comfortable. A pleasure to be in.

Of course, it has all been a traumatic experience for me to suddenly find myself chucking out piles of junk, but I discovered a super remedy. The new dresser has huge cupboard space, and several of the drawers throughout the house were emptied by my ruthless purging of the "rubbish".

I haven't bought any more "bargains" in many months, but I feel much happier now that I know all those "lonely" drawers and cupboards aren't quite so empty as they were a week ago!

WHO REMEMBERS their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings?

We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks.

But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon.

But gardens need water to survive so what can we do?

Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant.

A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size.

You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres!

With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free.

However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system.Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives.

Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently.

Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further.

A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth!

Meet Sunshine, Liv and Gutt - the Park’s new Wolverine cubs. After spending approximately nine weeks hidden away in their den, the rare cubs are beginning to venture out and explore their new woodland enclosure under the watchful eye of parents Sarka and Sharapova.

Cotswold Wildlife Park made history in 2012 as the first collection in the UK to successfully breed Wolverines (Gulo gulo) in captivity. These new arrivals are Sarka and Sharapova’s second litter and are testament to the Park’s excellent European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). Only around eighty Wolverines are believed to exist in captivity worldwide and breeding is notoriously difficult with this species, so the new cubs are encouraging news for future generations.

Keepers were unsure exactly how many cubs had been born until mother Sharapova started bringing the youngsters out of the den. Jamie Craig, Curator of Cotswold Wildlife Park and member of the EEP committee for Wolverines, commented: “Once the female enters her den, we are pretty confident that the kits have arrived. She is an excellent mother, only leaving the kits for very brief periods to eat and drink. Once the kits are old enough, she will allow them out to investigate their surroundings but always under her vigilant eye. We were delighted to be the first UK collection to breed this species and in many ways, it is even more rewarding to repeat our success.”

The tiny kits are born blind and covered in white fur with a pungent waxy substance on their pelage. This acts as a great defence against predation while the kits are vulnerable*.

A Wolverine’s start in life is a unique one. Adult females have a fascinating reproductive strategy known as embryonic diapause or delayed implantation. The embryo does not immediately implant in the uterus, but is maintained in a state of dormancy which allows pregnant females to fine-tune births and wait for the best

possible conditions. Reproduction is hugely energetically expensive for any animal. If the environmental conditions aren’t able to support a female through the intense periods of pregnancy and nursing, it makes no sense to put energy into giving birth to young that may not survive. Diapause can last up to ten months in Wolverines.

Wolverines possess one of the most powerful bites per square inch of any mammal.

During the 19th century, Wolverines completely disappeared from southern Europe, mainly due to persecution. They were protected by law in 1969. Fortunately, they managed to survive in the most remote upland areas of Finland, Norway and Sweden.

The Wolverine is the world’s largest terrestrial mustelid.

Their scientific name, Gulo gulo, comes from the Latin word gulo, which means “glutton”.

Wolverines are creatures steeped in folklore and myth. Indian mythology believes they are a link to the spirit world. In North America, they are also known as the “Indian Devil”.

John James Audubon, an American ornithologist and naturalist, described them as being “one of the greatest gormandizers among the brutes” (The Viviparous Quadrapeds of North America, 1846).

FOR YEARS NOW, cars have had onboard diagnostics that monitor the operation

of engine components, ABS brakes, air bags, through to air conditioning and even in-car entertainment, logging fault codes for items that perform outside known parameters. Usually if a fault develops a warning lamp or message will appear on the dashboard telling the driver to get the problem checked with at garage with plug in diagnostics.

Formula 1 teams, trucking companies and the aircraft industry have for many years used a technology called telemetry to remotely monitor vital engine, speed and global positioning data. Position speed and time data is already being used by insurance companies to monitor young drivers and recently business fleet owners now have the opportunity to be in remote contact with all their vehicles to try and avoid mechanical problems before they appear, speeding drivers (white van man) and position to enable efficient deliveries or collections.

The ordinary motorist has until now had to make their own decisions about vehicle maintenance, but in the not too distant future car manufacturers will be able to remotely monitor the mechanical condition of all their vehicles, find problems almost before they develop, book the car in to a local dealership and even order the parts before the car

arrives at the workshop. (It may even drive itself there).

Some friends of mine recently had a serious accident in a new BMW while they were travelling through France. The car finished up off the road wedged between two trees, but as they were collecting their wits the emergency systems in the car contacted BMW, a voice from the radio asked if they were OK and they were swiftly rescued, temporary accommodation found and a hire car arranged for them to finish their journey.

This bit of technology is only the start. It may be possible in the future to monitor and control certain functions in your car through a smart phone.

In the winter you could for instance warm the car up from the comfort of your bed so that it is defrosted and toasty before you get in it. You could immobilize it if it was to be stolen and it was even suggested keep an eye on the occupants via camera systems. No more nights of passion with your lover on the back seat!

Already the number of systems in a car that are monitored by its on board diagnostics is huge but to access this information means a trip to the garage and a plug into a code reader. We have one at work manufactured by SP Diagnostics of Box near Bath. As they are local I am on good terms with the technical team and often request that they should include certain

features on their equipment when it has one of its regular updates.

Even with the vast coverage that my equipment has, occasionally we have the ‘computer says no’ situation where the code reader will not interface with the car’s electronics. In future, with telematics, all that could be avoided as the problems could be rectified wirelessly.

Software upgrades to a car’s computer could be downloaded in much the same way as the operating systems on your PC or smartphone without you even knowing about it. Many cars already need software upgrades but at the moment it requires a trip to the garage and unless you receive the manufacturer’s recall notice you may be unaware that there was even a problem.

The rafts of technology available for cars today is huge and telemetry could be added to self parking, parking sensors, distance and collision avoidance systems, traction and stability control and the many comfort and communication systems on a car and that’s without taking driverless cars into consideration.

While telematics may vastly improve the safety and reliability of cars the downside is that along with your smartphone, TV set and PC, it will become another device that tracks and reports your every move to some faceless entity. I won’t care but will you?

A HOLIDAY IS A wonderful opportunity to relax and take things easy, but it’s also

when we place extra demands on our car. Whether planning a break on UK soil, or a trip by ferry to the continent, chances are that our motor is going to travel more miles than usual, and this could bring about unwanted trouble if we don’t take precautions.

Holiday car-breakdowns are misery-inducing. I have vivid memories of steam billowing out of our car’s engine one summer as a teenager, and of my dad fixing up some temporary repair that involved a pop bottle. Amazement that he had the know-how to do such a thing (I had up to this point branded him as a mechanophobe, if there is such a thing) didn’t make up for the frustration of being cooped up in a hot and stuffy car when I should have been out in the sunshine enjoying myself!

Most car faults are simple things which could easily be avoided by

a pre-holiday inspection. So, at least a week before you are due to go away, carry out these simple checks to reduce the risk of your dream break turning into a holiday nightmare!

First, check that your car won’t be due for an MOT or service while you’re away.

Next, check all the fluid levels – engine oil and coolant; brake, clutch and power steering reservoirs; screen wash; automatic transmission fluid if appropriate – and top up if required.

Inspect the fan belt for cracks and separation of the belt plies and get a new one fitted if necessary. Consider carrying a spare.

Check the condition of the tyres, including the spare. Inspect for cuts, abrasions, bulges or embedded nails or stones. This could also be a good opportunity to use the jack and ensure it works properly!

Check the tread and tyre pressure. If you are likely to be driving at sustained high speeds or with the car fully loaded, you may need to raise the pressure to higher than normal.

Check the condition of the wiper blades and clean them with a tissue dipped in screen wash concentrate. If they look damaged or if they smear a clean screen, renew them.Make sure all external lights are functioning, including rear fog lights. Try the horn, clean the windows and wipe the lamp lenses and door mirrors.

Finally, make sure you have a warning triangle, spare bulbs and a First Aid Kit, especially if you are travelling abroad as they are required in certain countries. Prevention is always better than cure, but don’t forget to take your breakdown cards and membership details – just in case!

Eating for EnglandNigel Slater................................................Subtitled ‘The Delights and Eccentricities of the British at Table’, this is an extended love letter to British food over the last forty years. If you have fond memories of sharing a box of Black Magic at Christmas or spooning jam over school rice pudding, then this is for you.

Anyone who owns one of Nigel Slater’s cookbooks will know that there is as much pleasure to be had from reading the recipes as there is from following them. He writes about food with passion, knowledge and honesty, admitting his fondness for Heinz Tomato Ketchup , Smarties and other non-gastronomic treats.

Here, he devotes short chapters (often no more than a paragraph or two) to a whole range of peculiarly British delights. Some are drawn from childhood memories, such as his father’s unsuccessful experiment with a coffee percolator (it ends up packed away next to the Christmas tree lights) or his mother’s blancmanges. Others are more contemporary and tells of the delight to be had from a visit to the fishmonger or the ritual of a Saturday farmers’ market. All are well written, funny and evocative.

Whether you read this from cover to cover, or simply scan the chapter headings for whatever takes your fancy, this is a perfect book for thinking about food – and despite Slater’s reservations the last chapter will probably send you out to the shops for a packet of Pink Wafers!

Death, Dynamite and DisasterRosa Matheson................................................The coming of the Railway Age was also the coming of the Railway Accident. They brought excitement and travelling freedom, but they also brought mayhem, trauma, danger and death. Nowadays we do not travel anticipating accidents, but in the infancy and toddler-times of railways such was their frequency, that they gave rise to an entrepreneurial opportunity for the introduction of travel insurance for death and injury. In August 1863 The Saturday Review wrote: “As soon as ever the excursion trains begin to run plentifully, the accidents follow in like proportion...’the railway accident season’ has begun..”

This book brings a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ account of some famous accidents such as that of William Huskisson MP, at the opening the Manchester & Liverpool Railway and the disastrous Tay Bridge Disaster as well as lesser known ones like the crash at Hexthorpe when the the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway daily express train travelling from Liverpool to Hull smashed into Midland Railway’s Race Day Special for Doncaster’s Gold Cup, using victim statements, newspaper articles, and official reports.

The coming of the railways brought technology and industrial development, but it also brought destruction and devastation as it razed towns, villages and churchyards to make way for its stations, hotels and Works. This chapter makes gruesome and almost unbelievable reading.

Most people associate dynamite and railways with their construction, blasting cuttings and tunnels, but in this book the dynamite is in relation to the first terrorist’s attacks on the railways and the underground in the late 19th Century. It charts the development of dynamite, the ‘Decade of Dynamite’ in the 1880s and the way it became the Fenians’ ‘weapon of choice’ for their British bombing campaign. Few know that the first death from bombings on the underground was that of Harry Pitts back in 1897. This believed to be, but unproven, the work of anarchists.

The book is written by local author Dr Rosa Matheson, Swindon’s best known railway historian and differs from her usual work on the Great Western Railway.

I’ve been thinking about heaven a lotrecently. Everyone I speak to has a differentidea of what it is going to be like. Whatdoes the Bible say?

In Revelation 21, there is a beautifulpicture:

It’s a picture of the end of time,when a new Jerusalem will come downto a new earth and God will perma-nently dwell with us, living in perfectrelationship with each other. It says,“God will wipe away everytear from their eyes, anddeath shall be no more, neithershall there be mourning, norcrying, nor pain anymore, forthe former things have passedaway.” (v4)

Now that’s something to look forward to. Itmeans no more death or suffering. Isaiah Ch 11describes this using animals: “The wolf will livewith the lamb, the leopard will lie down with goat,the calf and the lion and the yearling together; anda little child will lead them.”And it goes on even fur-ther… “The cow will feed with the bear, their youngwill lie down together, and the lion will eat strawlike an ox.” In my eyes, that means the mice are safe.Even the animals are in good relationship with eachother!

What else do we know about the end of things? Therewon’t be a Temple according to Revelation 21 (v22),

because God and the Lamb (Jesus) are there all thetime. There is no sun or moon, because light willradiate from God’s glory and there will be no dark-ness ever (v23). On top of that, the gates of the cityare left permanently open because there are no ene-mies and all those who are pure will come in (v26).

Mmmm... the city of God, the heavenlyJerusalem is reserved for the pure… That might be aproblem? If I look in the mirror and am truly honestwith myself, I can’t pretend to be perfect and with-out fault. Purity isn’t exactly my middle name, butthankfully, it doesn’t have to be.

God has made us pure, by sending His Son intothe world to take away the impurities of the rubbish(sin and death) in our heart. Bins are collected

every two weeks in my village. Jesus needed todeal with the rubbish only once. The rubbish inmy heart died, when Jesus died. It was placedupon Him. I am now clean, because of Him.The truck has driven away and I’ve been recycled(to stretch the analogy even further).

Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Theone who dealt with our sin and roseabove it all. He gives us the gift of theHoly Spirit to help us through life.Yes, as Christians, we still have to livewith the legacy of the old life withinus, but now we have the Holy Spirit tomake us better people and overcomethe rubbish. We are guaranteed heaven

through faith and through theHoly Spirit, we can grow inholiness each day until thatday when everything shall bepure and holy.
