Editor’s Letter

TownCr er Your Local Magazine

♥Welcome to the August Magazine!

A warm and thankfully, ‘sunny,’ welcome to the August issue of ‘Your Local Town Crier’.

Now the long school summer holidays are upon us, but work commitments continue, you may be wondering how to keep the children entertained during their break. There's a few ideas in the What's On pages, and there's even an item on hiring a Children’s Entertainer! Or how about camping or metal detecting - see page 44.

Our cover photo reminds me to mention the Calne Food & Drink Festival on Saturday 5th September. See page 24 for full details and also some recipes to try.

Thanks to everyone who sent in contributions to this issue - we are always interested in receving items of local interest from our readers.

Until next time ...

Movie by MoonlightMamma Mia!30 August 2015 at 20:30Royal Victoria Park, BathCome along and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment under the stars at The Forever Friends Appeal’s outdoor film screening of Mamma Mia (PG).

Entry to the event is free, with all funds raised on the night going towards The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign – to help build a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

The film starts at approximately 8.30pm (or when it gets dark!), but do arrive early to secure a good spot and we recommend that you bring warm clothes and a torch for later in the evening. You’ll be able to grab a bite to eat from one of our fabulous food outlets (hot food and ice cream) in between singing along to the popular hits of Abba. 70’s inspired fancy dress is very much welcome and encouraged on the night!

Following the huge crowds that now regularly attend the Movie by Moonlight, the screening is moving to a larger section of the park to allow for greater numbers and make the event even more enjoyable. Our gratitude goes to Filmair Mobile Cinema Services for enabling us to hold this popular annual event. Last year saw our biggest crowd yet turn out for Grease, raising over an incredible £7,000 for a new Cancer Centre at the RUH. Don’t miss out on another night to remember!

This year’s event is proudly sponsored by Freestyle Designs, Bath. For more information visit www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk or 01225 825823

John Williams Heating Services

Leading Wiltshire Heating and Plumbing Company launches service plans

Wiltshire’s leading heating and plumbing company, John Williams Heating Services, has launched its first service plans for customers.

The plans have been designed by co-founders John and Debbie Williams who felt many people would prefer to spread the cost of caring for their heating systems.

John said: “We know how important it is to budget both within our own business and at home. For several months we’ve been working on this new strategy to offer customers peace of mind and confidence there won’t be unexpected large bills around the normal maintenance of their heating systems.”

The new service plans cover domestic gas and LPG boilers and benefits include new for old parts, discounted labour rates and a guaranteed next day attendance. There are a range of plans on offer from a basic annual boiler service right up to a total care plan. Prices start at £6.60 a month direct debit.

John Williams Heating Services is based on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate in Chippenham and is now in its 11th year of business. This year, it was named Apprentice Employer of the Year in the Wiltshire Business Awards. Last year, the company won the award for Best Small Business and Business of the Year in the Enterprising Wiltshire awards. It’s also a Which? Trusted Trader and is registered with CheckATrade.com.

To find out more about the service plans email [email protected] or call 01249 709024.

Home-Start Needs You!If you can spare a couple of hours a week, Home-Start Kennet needs you to visit and support families with young children, who are struggling.

We are the local charity which supports young families by introducing trained and professionally supported volunteers to visit them in their own homes. And we have a preparatory course beginning in October 2015.

After 28 years’ success in former Kennet we are now hoping to expand our service to West Wiltshire. We are already well known in Kennet and we are also looking forward to meeting potential volunteers in the Chippenham, Calne, Melksham and Corsham areas.

Volunteering for Home-Start is an immensely rewarding activity. Our volunteers are parents themselves, male and female, of all ages and backgrounds. If you can spare 2–3 hours per week, are a caring, non-judgemental listener and have experience of raising children, then talk to us.

For more information, please contact Alison on 01672 569457 or [email protected] www.homestartkennet.co.uk

A Flower to Remember The Forever Friends Appeal charity for the Royal United Hospital has launched a brand new initiative, by inviting the general public to support the work of the hospital and remember those we love with their new ‘A Flower to Remember’ appeal.

Throughout these summer months, everyone across the catchment area of the RUH is given the opportunity to make a donation of their choice to The Forever Friends Appeal and have the name of a relative or friend acknowledged on a pretty crafted flower. These attractive flowers will then be part of a display at the RUH from 7th - 21st September 2015.

Jan Witt, In Memory and Legacy Officer, The Forever Friends Appeal said “Over the years, I have seen first- hand the generosity & courage from family & friends who have lost someone very special, and have chosen to support the hospital at such a very difficult time in their lives. By introducing ‘A Flower to Remember’ appeal this summer, it will provide us not only with the opportunity to recognise this area of giving but to show our appreciation of support in a very different way.

All those who have donated flowers will be invited to a special ‘Time of Reflection’ event on the 26th September 2015, where families and friends can celebrate the lives of whom the flowers have been dedicated and take home as a personal memento, if they so wish.

Jan Witt continues: “We are really excited to be launching this inaugural appeal. It will be a poignant and wonderful occasion with the community coming together to remember and celebrate. The dedicated flowers will revive warm memories, whilst helping the Royal United Hospital to continue providing the very best care and support to its patients and their families. Taking the time to donate a flower to remember a loved one, and knowing that in honouring their life you are potentially helping to improve someone else’s, is a truly powerful thing.”

If you would like to celebrate the life of someone special and dedicate a flower in their loving memory, please complete the printed form and send it to The Forever Friends Appeal with your donation (cheques payable to RUH Charitable Fund). EVERYONE IS TALKING about pensions. ‘Pension Freedom’, loss of tax relief,

and how much the Government will make from people cashing in (£700m or so at the last count). Additionally, there are serious concerns about scammers trying to benefit from all the confusion, sometimes succeeding. Leading to questions and headaches for many people - pensions are complex.

Guidance is available from the Money Advice Service and if your query relates to a Final Salary Pension Scheme, from the Pension Wise website: moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en pensionwise.gov.uk/

There is an importance difference between guidance and advice. Guidance is not specific to your circumstances and there is no comeback if you act on it and it goes wrong. Advice on the other hand, is highly regulated and supported by an extensive complaint handling system, and statutory Government protection, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

The other important thing is to ensure the person you are dealing with is genuine, and properly regulated. A good way to do this is to check the individual and company on the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) register:fca.org.uk/register

An adviser can provide advice specifically tailored to your personal circumstances. Some advisers are Independent and others are Restricted with advice limited to specific products and services. Depending on the complexity of your pension issue you may wish to seek an adviser that has a higher level of qualification such as Chartered status. For more complex situations and Final Salary pension schemes, you may wish to consult a specialist with higher pension qualifications.

I am an Independent Chartered Financial Planner and Pension Specialist based at Alexander House Financial Services Limited, a Chartered Company. The firm recently won ‘Retirement Planner of the Year’ Award from

What’s On

Do you enjoy good local food? Ales and cider? Listening to live music? Relaxing on or near a beautiful waterway? Then Melksham Food and River Festival is the perfect event for you!

Come along to the Littlebrook Centre on Saturday 5th September from 10:30 onwards for a great time at LittleFest. Festival sponsors Waitrose will lead the Regatta themed event with tastings and samplings of locally supplied products. There will also be a number of events supported by Candy Jaxx, CJ’s café and Honey’s that will keep the children entertained. Throughout the day, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust will be offering boat trips on the river, and Try Canoeing sessions will be available from 3:00pm (you will need to sign up in advance for this).

Andy York Photography will be taking photos all day, which can be bought online, with all proceeds going to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

The King George V Playing Field will be the venue for the main event on Sunday 6th September also sponsored by Waitrose Melksham. The event will host over 70 stalls selling a wide array of local food, drink and food related products. Sunday will also see cookery demonstrations, including one by new Melksham Italian venue Casa Restaurant, a fresh fish demonstration by Waitrose, as well as an ‘Anybody Can Cook’ session. Lively Irish tunes will be provided by popular folk band Wessex Contraband.

On Sunday, as well as the boat trips and canoeing sessions (again, you will need to sign up beforehand), there will be demonstrations by Bradford on Avon Diving Club, and the Fire Service Water Rescue Team. It is also hoped to have a flotilla of steam and motor powered boats for visitors to enjoy.

There will be plenty for the children too, with face painting, a bouncy castle and fairground attractions, along with a celebrity appearance of Frankie the Canal Horse.

Perhaps the most intriguing event of the day will be the Chilli Eating Competition! This contest is not

for the faint-hearted, but it does make a great spectator sport, as 12 competitors confront and try to consume the hottest chillies. To enter, call 01225 704187 or email: [email protected]

For a delicious, family weekend of culinary and watery celebrations, visit Melksham Food and River Festival 5th–6th September 2015 from 10:30am

Penne with Kale and Sun-dried TomatoesKale is from the same family as cabbage. It’s packed with calcium, vitamins and other nutrients as well as being full of fibre. It’s already classed as a super food, but this simple supper dish proves that it’s super-tasty too.

Grilling or barbecuing fruit is a lovely way to bring out its natural sweetness. You can use your own favourite fruits: mango, apricots and bananas also work well.

Serves: 6IngredientsFor the fruit kebabs1 Pineapple4 Peaches or nectarinesSmall punnet of strawberriesVegetable oil

For the sauceA large knob of butterZest from half an orange and juice from one whole orange.3 Tbsp runny honey2 Cloves1 Cinnamon stick

MethodStand the pineapple on its flat base, and use a knife to trim down the sides, cutting off all the skin. Cut out any remaining woody bits

Cut into quarters lengthways then carefully cut off and discard the core from each quarter. This leaves the lovely sweet flesh.

Chop the pineapple into nice chunks.

Halve the peaches or nectarines and discard the stones, then cut into large chunks

Pick the leaves off the strawberries and leave whole.

To make the sauce

Melt the knob of butter in a pan over a medium heat Finely chop half the orange zest, add it to the pan, then add the juice.

Add the honey, cloves and cinnamon stick.

Warm through for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, then remove the cloves and cinnamon stick

To cook the fruit

Rub the bars of a clean grill, barbecue or griddle pan with a little vegetable oil. Make sure it’s really hot.

Lightly drop the fruit chunks on to the bars and let them cook for a few minutes.

Different fruits cook at different speeds so keep lifting the pieces with tongs and checking underneath

When the fruit is soft, remove it from the heat. A little charring is fine and characteristic of barbecued food.

To ServeTransfer all the cooked fruit to a bowl and pour the warm syrup over.

Toss everything together until nicely coated.

Divide the fruit between six plates. Serve immediately with vanilla ice cream or natural yoghurt.

IT’S SUMMER TIME and Mrs Butcher’s body is, I am sad to say, far from being bikini ready

so – deep breath - I am on a diet! Everyone who knows me knows that I get grumpy when I am on a diet. Normally I am quite an optimistic person but when I am on a dreaded diet I feel deprived and see temptation everywhere. My love of the odd brownie, cream tea or muffin is well known to regular readers and so a dramatic reduction of daily cake intake has a dangerous effect on my mood.

However, this time round its different, because I am not alone in curbing those cake cravings as my Beversbrook colleagues are also eating healthily too. Here at Beversbrook Medical Centre, we are taking part in Wiltshire’s Big Pledge to ‘Eat a Rainbow’ with a goal of losing 5% of our total body weight. Wiltshire Council’s Big Pledge is a County-wide scheme and hundreds of individuals, businesses and groups are taking part. Some of you may remember that Wiltshire’s Big Pledge was launched in 2014 as part of Wiltshire Council’s Legacy. It now returns again for a second year with the theme ‘make a difference’ urging people to choose from twelve pledges which are designed to make a difference to your health and well-being or to help improve your community. Eat a Rainbow, by eating your five a day for at least thirty days, is one of the twelve inspiring pledges and you can choose one which best suits you.

To help with our pledge myself and some of my Beversbrook colleagues have taken advantage

of the Slimming On Referral scheme, which is also supported by Wiltshire Council, Public Health. If you meet certain criteria such as your BMI is over 30 (or less if you have long term health conditions) and you have not been a member of a slimming club in the previous six months, Wiltshire Council will provide you with 12 weeks free membership to Slimming World or Weight Watchers classes. If you lose more than ten percent of your total body weight whilst on the classes they will provide you with a further 12 weeks free membership! If you feel you may be eligible for this brilliant scheme, you will need a letter from your GP or Practice Nurse confirming that you meet the criteria.

At Beversbrook Medical Centre, our Practice Nurses are trained to assess your eligibility and arrange the referral. During your appointment it is also worthwhile asking about the Active Health Referral Scheme, which is similarly a 12 week program to help eligible patients increase physical fitness with membership to your local participating Leisure Centre. There is also the SHINE course, which is designed to help your whole family live healthily and also Counterweight, which is a weight management course available at some GP Practices.

It’s not too late to join in with the Big Pledge, which ends on the 30th September 2015, there are lots of good Pledge’s to choose from. You don’t have to do it alone and in fact doing it together, from our experience here at Beversbrook, makes it that much more fun! Why not make a family pledge, or

a workplace pledge? You can even involve your community or social group if you wanted to. If you are doing your pledge alone and need further support, you can contact

one of Wiltshire Council’s Health Trainers on 0300 003 4566, who can provide you with face to face motivation. For more information on the Pledges available see

Wiltshire Council’s website Wiltshire.gov.uk or visit the

Facebook page ‘Wiltshire’s Big Pledge’.

Excuse the pun, but obesity is a growing

problem here in Wiltshire, affecting one in four adults. Lucky for us there’s lots of support

available to help promote happier, healthier communities. If, like mine, your body

is not quite bikini ready and you think you might like to lose weight it is always worthwhile visiting your GP Surgery for help and support. It doesn’t have to be part of a public pledge, just a little private goal you set yourself, but the health benefits of losing even five per cent of your body weight make it all worthwhile.

Here at Beversbrook you can’t miss the positive affect eating healthily has had on the team. We are all filled with so much energy and every pound lost by our colleagues, inspires us to keep going ourselves. I am finding myself positively chipper, which is a real change from the grumpy old dieter I used to be and have lost five and half pounds already. I get support from my colleagues, support from my new friends at Slimming World and our class leader, Sophie. The most important thing though is that I can eat cake! Yes – can you believe it? In fact I can eat lots of things I didn’t think I would be able to and I am having fun trying out new recipes. I’m committing myself 100% to our Beversbrook Big Pledge - except for the obvious, what have I got to lose?!

Lumps and Bumps

Why Self-Examination is important

ONE in eight women will get breast cancer, yet over a third of women don’t check themselves regularly for early tell tale signs that could

save lives.

Regular self-examination should take place around the same time every month to help you become familiar with the natural shape and feel of your breasts. Any changes should be easily detected, in particular puckering and dimpling of the skin, new pain that doesn’t go away, lumps or bumps not present in the other breast, and unusual discharge, bleeding or rash from the nipple.

Whilst breast cancer is more common in women over fifty, testicular cancer is a young man’s disease, with males aged 15-35 being most at risk. Early diagnosis can be life-saving, yet only 1 in 5 men check themselves monthly.

During or after a warm bath or shower is the best time to self examine, when the muscles are relaxed and hang lower. Danger signs include pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum; a dragging feeling in the scrotum; a dull ache in the groin or lower stomach; excess fluid in the scrotum; blood in the sperm and discharge from the penis.

For more information about how to self-examine, visit Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies website www.channel4embarrassingillnesses.com, where there are excellent video tutorials available.

Facing my FearsI may be a fearless mountain goat after all!!

“Rather you than me”, were the words given to me by a friend when I told them that I was going to do the three peaks challenge. Walking up the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours, in all weathers wasn’t for them, I wasn’t sure it was for me. Now walking up three mountains is a bit of a challenge for anyone, but for me I had the added challenge of being scared of heights. The last time I walked up a mountain, I was clinging to the grown, sweat pouring off me and I was shaking, and I was only half way up, so to do the 3 peaks was going to be a challenge on top of a challenge. Well challenge day came and Ben Nevis was our first Mountain.

The path was wide and the incline gradual, well for a time, then it got steeper and steeper. I put my head down and told myself I was just walking up the hill to the white horse and Barbury Castle, it became my mantra. I was frightened but kept going. Up and Up I went with my team and eventually we reached the peak. I dared myself to look out at the vista, and gasped at the beauty and of the height, it was a long way up!! Down the mountain we went “pick up the pace, we are running behind time” was the call from our leader, so we began to run down the mountain. I didn’t want to hold the team up so I followed on changing the mantra to” I’m just walking down from Barbury castle” arr!!! Next thing I know I’m looking over the edge of the mountain, thinking’ that’s a long way down’; I had tripped.

After what felt like a lifetime the leader picked me up and dusted me off and said “let’s go”.I was shaken but determined to walk up and down this mountain. We finally reached the base of the mountain had some food and set off for Scafell Pike. As I sat in the car on the way to our next destination it fully struck me what I had achieved, not only had I walked up Scotland highest mountain, I had done it without becoming a fearful quivering wreck, which I had done on the last mountain adventure. Up until this point I had only envisaged being able to walk up the one

mountain, but after this I set myself another challenge which was to walk up Scafell, if I can do one I can do another and so I did, I did all three mountains in 23 hours 54 mins, not bad considering I was only going to do one. It was like having a new lease of life to have faced my fear and moved on from it.

By facing my fear and working out a strategy to overcome it, all be it thinking of walking up the hill to Barbury Castle, I still did it, I faced that fear and now when I‘m walking up a mountain and there’s something which I haven’t faced before, I step back look at the situation work out my strategy to overcome it and do it. I do the same thing when facing new challenges in everyday life. Fear can be a good thing as it stops us from doing thing which could harm us, it can also be a killer of aspirations and adventures, it can trap and smother you and stop you from living the life you want to live. So if you have a fear of what people might think of you, or what you do, or maybe it a phobia which is having a negative impact on your life, find someone who can help you find your strategy, your resources to help you face the fear and create a future your want for you and your family or for your business. Cultivate your fearlessness.

If you would like explore how you can create strategies for a better life, or to find your inner mountain goat please contact Ruth McGrady on 07779 709793 for an informal chat to see if she can help you.

International Left Handers’ Day

August 13th

SINCE 1976, sinistromanual people the world over have been celebrating their ‘right’ to be left handed - see what I did there?! Even though

around 13% of the world’s population are left-handed they are, as one disgruntled leftie put it, “the most discriminated against minority” around!

No one knows for sure why a person is left-handed, but research suggests it is genetic and left-handedness does tend to run in families.

As any left-hander knows, the world isn’t really designed to cater for them, so having a whole day dedicated to raising awareness of the everyday issues and challenges faced by the left-handed population is one way of changing that.

In days gone by left-handers may have been forced to use their right hand (at school for example) but nowadays the world is becoming a friendlier place. Tools such as scissors, tin openers, vegetable peelers, knives and tape measures are all available for the non-right-handed.

Left-handedness is controlled by the right side of the brain, which means that lefties are likely to be creative - excelling in music, the arts and media. They are also inclined to be good at ball sports and at anything requiring hand-to-eye co-ordination.

Though being left-handed might once have been considered a disability, today’s lefties refuse to let it hold them back. “I may be left-handed,” says one, “But I’m always right.” I’m not going to argue!

St Peter’s C of E Academy

CANCER RESEARCH, in association with Race for Life, launched a new initiative this year, enabling schools to hold their own Race for Life events,

accessible to all with participation taking place during the normal school day.

St Peter’s C of E Academy, a primary school in Lords Mead, Chippenham embraced this opportunity with the full co operation of the Head Teacher, Local Board Members, teaching staff and pupils.

The event was held on Tuesday 16th of June, with a track being marked around the extensive playing field within the grounds of St Peter’s C of E Academy, set up by the staff and pupils. Each person had to complete five laps at a run, jog or walk; this equated to a distance of just short of one mile!

The children in reception, aged just four years old were first to take part in the morning. Every child completed the course with enthusiasm and ongoing encouragement from the older pupils and teaching staff.

Each person had to obtain five marks, written on their sheet to record that they had completed the full course; the assisting children were excellent at offering encouragement and making sure each person had completed the right amount of laps. Upon completion

each child and adult, proudly received their Race for Life medal; distributed in the winners area adorned with ribbons and more pupil volunteers handed out the individual medals which were provided by the charity itself.

Classes took part in the event throughout the course of the day, the pupils range from age 4 - 11 with some of the older children completing the course several times over to ensure the younger pupils had the support they required. Holding the school event made it accessible to all ages and abilities.

The whole school were brought together by the event, and donations were given throughout the day, raising an undoubtedly worthwhile amount of £446.40 towards Cancer Research.

St Peter’s C of E Academy will certainly be holding similar events in the future, with the praise of the parents making it straight forward for their children to take part in the popular Race for Life event and the enthusiasm of the pupils it may well become an annual event.

THE ANNUAL 2014 Pocket Money Survey by the Halifax revealed that 8 to 15 year

olds received an average amount of £6.35 per week. Whilst parents or guardians were the main givers, a third of those surveyed also received pocket money from grandparents. Thirteen year olds were the most likely age group to receive weekly amounts and boys received more on average than girls. Only a third of children said they would save up for something expensive, most preferring to ask for it as a present. Other surveys such as those by Roosterbank suggest children as young as 3 are getting pocket money.

Whatever the amount, pocket money given in the right way can help children to learn the necessary skills and gain the confidence to handle money responsibly.

If you are having trouble deciding how much pocket money to give

your children, think about what you expect them to pay for from that money. You can involve your children in the decision process. Do you expect them to buy their own sweets and magazines with the money for example, and would this mean that they ended up eating fewer sweets than you currently buy for them which may lead to healthier choices? Or would you prefer to buy this type of thing and money will be for ‘special extras’ only?

Commonly a basic payment plus bonus system is recommended. This includes a fixed amount which is given as long as children do certain expected things, perhaps keep their rooms tidy and do their homework for example. It is then ‘topped’ up by extra amounts if children do additional chores or achieve something significant .Of course you will need to make the possibilities appropriate to their age, and different chores can attract

different bonuses depending on the time and effort required. Many parents find that the use of a reward chart is helpful, particularly for younger children as it shows clearly the financial benefits of completing extra tasks.

Having regular conversations about what children are doing with their money, what they want to buy and why they want it is also important. This can help them understand the value of things much more clearly than when you pay for things for them because they have to decide whether to buy x or y. If you can bear it, it really is best to let them learn from their financial mistakes. Whilst many children will have a splurge when they first start receiving pocket money, as they get used to it they tend to become more careful about their choices. You can also help stimulate their thinking by talking about how you budget.

“Oh …You lot get 6 weeks off at summer!” a resentful childminder mutters at the class teacher as she extracts her head from the coat rack, triumphantly waving the lunch box that little Johnny lost last December. The teacher makes a mental note – it is not a great idea to send waste food home in lunch boxes. A biological experiment is currently underway, and she suspects that a new species has evolved in there!

Firstly, every summer holiday, every teacher will get a cold! No matter what the weather is like, or what viruses are “going around”, whatever illnesses civilians got in the previous 9 months, the teacher will have all of them in the first week of the holidays! Then it’s suitcases packed and they’re off!

You can always tell teachers on summer holidays because they holiday in exactly the same way they teach. Some are planned, enthusiastic and timetable every possible thing into a crammed day of rock climbing, white water rafting and scuba diving. They are the ones insisting that everyone at the base of Helvellyn forms an orderly queue, and who’s off-spring will have individual colour coded rucksacks and florescent vests. Youth hostels ring with the sound of their hearty songs long into the night, as German tourists look on bemused.

The type who always do their marking at the last minute are my personal favourites due to the chaos that they create around them. They always attempt to travel the entire world in 6 weeks (being ill for the first 7 days). They miss buses, trains, rickshaws and hostel closing times. If you have relatives living abroad they are liable to ring you and ask for their addresses so they “can look them up” (translation: “I forgot to book accommodation.”)

Lastly, take the research specialist ... tucked on the beach looking bewildered by it all, still wearing his corduroy trousers, (rolled up to the knee) along with socks and sandals, catching up on all the reading he hasn’t had a chance to do this year. He only remembers

where he is when his respectfully quiet family pass him an egg sandwich and he finds there is sand in his food.

I would go so far as to suggest that you can categorise teaching styles through one simple question ... “Where are you going on holiday Sir/ Miss?”

For more insights into the wonderful world of teaching please visit Marie’s blog at Launch2learning.co.uk Marie Wykes has been a teacher for 25 years and runs the Launch2learning tuition centre in Calne.

Summer Activities

WHEN I WAS a little girl my father bought a cheap metal detector off

a friend. It was a weird-looking bit of kit and dad (rather rashly) hinted that we might find buried treasure and become millionaires. It accompanied us on every holiday and I have happy memories of dad, wearing comical over-size headphones, wandering up and down various beaches, periodically pausing to dig up yet another ring pull or bottle top. We never did find a treasure chest but we did find foreign coins, old pennies, a brooch and once, an engraved wedding ring, which we handed in to the local police station. That was exciting enough to seven-year-old me.

Dad’s metal-detecting was a harmless and somewhat seasonal hobby, but recently I was surprised to learn that modern-day metal detecting is a subject which provokes controversy among archaeologists, the police and landowners.

Most metal detectors admit that becoming rich or finding something of immense value is about the same as winning the lottery. But it does happen. In 2009 Terry Herbert, who had been metal-detecting for 18 years unearthed what has become known as The Saxon Hoard: the largest collection of Anglo Saxon gold and silver ever seen. Valued at £3 million it is still the most expensive treasure ever found on British soil. Terry did nothing wrong; he informed all the right people and behaved properly throughout his discovery, yet many archaeologists were very unhappy.

Archaeology is a deeply political profession and a very academic one. Archaeologists feel that the past belongs to everybody; that finds should be in a public collection on display and

accessible for study on the internet or in books. They see those who use metal detectors as being very object-orientated while they, the academics, are educated to take a broader view.

Most metal detector enthusiasts do operate legitimately, but some work on the wrong side of the law. Archaeologists call these treasure hunters ‘nighthawks’, because they go out to archaeological sites under cover of darkness to raid them for artefacts, which they can then sell over the internet. They often cause considerable damage in the process.

So does that mean we shouldn’t go out metal-detecting? No, it’s a fun hobby and can be absorbing, exciting and educational.

The Bounty HuntersModern day metal-detecting

There are some rules all enthusiasts should obey:

- Do not trespass

- Adhere strictly to laws concerning protected sites.

- Minimise ground disturbance when you dig.

- Adhere to the country code (close gates, don’t litter etc.)

- Report any finds to the relevant landowner.

Consider joining a metal detecting club – not only is it fun and sociable, they will have current advice on the conservation and handling of artefacts, and often provide insurance too.

Five Tips for Camping NovicesDon’t travel too far - If it’s your first family camping trip it’s probably best to try a couple of local test excursions, particularly if you have young children. That way if unforeseen problems crop up it’s not too difficult to get back home, even in the middle of the night!

Consider taking along other children or camping with friends - Children in a group tend to occupy each other which will leave more time for the adults to relax.

Pack a couple of board games and books - Just in case the novelty of camping wears off after a while, or for when the kids are worn out and need some quiet time.

Pack a first aid kit - Include pain and cough relievers, bug spray and plasters. Also don’t forget the kid-friendly food and snacks.

Don’t over-schedule - Try playing it by ear. Building a campfire, bug hunting and pond dipping can make for a gentle pleasant afternoon. A camping trip is a chance to get back to basics in more ways than one.

Whether for a birthday party or a fete an entertainer can make or break an event.

Ask around - Most good entertainers get the majority of their business by word-of-mouth.

Pick someone enthusiastic - If they don’t enthuse you, they won’t enthuse your child

Book early - Everyone wants a slot between 2pm and 5pm on a Saturday

Consider alternative dates - You might get exactly what you want a little cheaper.

Ask for references and follow them up - A good entertainer will be happy to provide references.

Insurance - They should have public liability insurance and CRB checked.*

Choose someone age-appropriate - Your nine-year-old probably won’t thank you for a clown.

Trust your entertainer - They entertain children all the time so they know what makes a great party

BUT

You know your child best Don’t be afraid to voice any concerns you have. If your child doesn’t like loud bangs for instance, or is shy, say so.

In the words of Cyndi Lauper:

But I see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that’s why I love you So don’t be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow

I love this song because it says it all when it comes to choosing colours for your home. Be true to yourself and what you love and you won’t go far wrong.

So why do we sometimes find choosing colours for our homes so difficult?

I think it could be something to do with the amount of home magazines on the market and the availability of so many inspirational photos on the TV and internet. All this eye candy side tracks us and we start making choices according to trends and fashion rather than actually listening to our inner self and creating a home that reflects our true personality.

So how can we get back on track?

To discover our true colour personality it’s helpful to understand what sort of colours we really like. And I don’t mean red, yellow or blue. Anyone can

enjoy any colour if it’s in the tones or shades that suit their personality.

In its simplest terms there are four basic types of colour when it comes to interiors. Pastels or tints. Bright and pure colours. Muted tones. Shades.

To further help you discover which type of colour you’re most at home with, imagine yourself buying a lambswool jumper. Choose a colour that you would like to wear, whether that’s red, blue, green or orange. Now consider whether you would naturally be

drawn to the tints, tones, shades or more pure colours within that colour range. When doing this exercise, try not to get distracted by the colour you would choose to go with a certain outfit or for a certain occasion as we all have to modify our ‘personae’ when we are in the public domain. What we

are considering here is the colour that you would most like to wear if you were completely on your own and only had yourself to please.

Once you’ve identified which TYPE of colour you are happiest living with, it makes choices of colours for your home so much easier.

All you have to do then, is decide what sort of mood you want to create.

Designing your scheme around one colour (monochromatic) will give an intrinsically peaceful feel to the room

Designing your scheme around 2, 3 or 4 colours adjacent on the colour wheel (analogous) will give a relaxing base for the room

Using 2 colours opposite each other on the colour wheel (complimentary) will give a more energetic vibe to the room

Once you have chosen the basis of the scheme, these feelings can be intensified by strengthening the colours used or they can be toned down by muting the colours and using more neutrals within the palette.

Bear these basics in mind when making your choices for fabrics and accessories and you will create a home that is beautiful AND makes you happy!

Jo Deacon

What is all this fuss about? Why oh why do we have to leap into summer with all the blind urges of Lemmings

throwing themselves off a cliff ?

Why, when we are in the middle of a heatwave do we want to bake like cow pats in the sun until we are curling up at the edges and frizzled like overdone burgers on a BBQ ?

Surely it would be far more sensible to have your holls in the colder months when most folk are having a moan about the rain, the wind, the frost and all things pertaining to the winter ?In case you can’t tell, I am NOT a sun worshipper !

I was born in a taxi in the middle of a snowstorm, which could account for my passionate love affair with the snow. I can “do” snow quite deliriously happily, but this blasted heat has got me beat. (Or more precisely melted to a sweaty and useless lump!)

They say ladies don’t sweat, they merely perspire ! My answer to that is bull crap!

I sweat like a brewers dray, and to be still suffering menopausal hot sweats at 70 is just taking things a bit too bloody far! My mother was still having them in her 80’s and it seems I inherited my whacky metabolism from her – along with everything ending in “itis” – sinusitis, mastitis, neuritis, arthritis etc etc etc. Thanks mum!

Anyway, having just got back from a week at our beloved Bath Marina and Caravan Park in our camper van, during which we felt rather like being in a sauna, Fred is now nagging for us to go off again somewhere in the van! I am considering doing a website addressed just to him called “Sod Off.com!!!”

I love the camper van, but by the time we’ve loaded it with everything but the wardrobes and washing machine, I’m knackered.

There’s all the food, towels, bedding, toiletries, clothes, books, DVD’s’ the dogs paraphernalia, the cockatiels food, and mundane things like plasters, loo rolls, soap and sponges, toothbrushes, etc to be stowed away.

And it doesn’t end there. Oh no!Before we move off site to return home, it all has to be packed safely away for the return journey.Home again, guess what? It all has to be taken back in the house and put away again – till next time!

They are used to us now at the Bath site but it raised a few laughs when we first arrived there. There was us. and the dog, but most people don’t take their pet bird along with them.

It was really hot and sticky at night, made more so by the fact the dog insisted on sleeping on the bed with us – and she snores worse than Fred.

We slept with all the windows and the sky light open and if a mad axe man had come along – sod it! I was too damn hot to care!

I even took my little primrose plant given to me by the head gardener on a previous visit along with us, wedged in the cup holder. (Well I knew it would need watering and would dry out if I left it at home!!!)

So as you can see, I’m not a summer person at all.

Anyway, back to normal for a while at least.

I’m gonna make you all swear at me now!

Do you realise that we are now closer to next Christmas than last? (All right! All right you lot out there! That’ll do! Stop with the bad language!)

And what about all this tennis on TV?

Is it really necessary to show it most of the day on both BBC channels?

The huffing and puffing, grunting and whooping going on on the courts makes them sound as though they’re in pain. Why do they play if it’s such an effort? It’s like running or jogging. I could never understand the reason for that either.

The older I get, the more things puzzle me.

I used to have a handle on life – but it fell off!

Ah well! Cest-la-vie.

Anyway, I am now off to have a nice refreshing cup of tea in the shade of the lounge with the fan on full.

Ta ta for now, and happy holidays, He! He! He!

DURING WORLD WAR II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a

garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit.During the 1960s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy!

There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge.

Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses. And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of food-related concerns seems to be growing exponentially.

In the absence of clear leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food.

Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that.

To join them simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the country. In some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with.

Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits! by Rachel Leverton

Local businesswoman beats McDonalds to national award

SWINDON businesswoman Hilary Coates has been named New Woman Franchisee of the Year at the 2015 EWIF Awards after seeing off stiff

competition from Jane Blackwell of national fast food retailer McDonald's and Rosemary Bookkeeping's Caroline O'Brian.

Since launching her Wagging Tails franchise in April 2014 Hilary enjoyed great success and has built a thriving business offering dog owners in the area an alternative to kennels whereby their dogs receive a holiday of their own staying in the home of specially selected dog carers.

An understandably ecstatic Hilary had this to say on her success, “I am absolutely over the moon. It has been a lot of hard work and I would like to thank my wonderful owners and carers for helping me to make my business so successful. Being selected ahead of a brand of the stature of McDonald's is a real honour and I am incredibly proud to have won this award.”

Richard Davies of Category Sponsor, Making Money magazine, had this to say of Hilary's achievement, “Not only has Hilary successfully developed her own thriving local business but she has given a huge amount back to her franchisor by getting involved with the training of new franchisees and providing support in the development of the network. Hilary is a worthy winner of this award and an example of how the relationship between franchisee and franchisor should work”.

EWIF is a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. EWIF’s primary focus is to support women who are looking for a route into the franchise industry by providing advice and guidance to these people.

Commenting on their involvement with the awards Andrew Taylor, Head of Leisure, Retail and Franchising at headline sponsor NatWest stated,

“We are delighted to continue our support for the EWIF awards and congratulate all the winners on their success. The awards provide a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate the work of women in the UK franchising industry. The professionalism and achievements of all the winners and nominees are inspiring and they are great role models for other women thinking about breaking into the industry.”

The Awards took place at RBS House, London on Tuesday 12th May in front of guests from across the world of franchising (including sponsors McDonalds Restaurants Ltd, Making Money, NatWest, Busibricks, Franchise Finance, Elite Franchise, No+Vello and The Franchise Show) to honour those women forging successful businesses in this industry.

Richard Davies of category sponsor Making Money magazine presents Hilary with the EWIF award for New Woman Franchisee of the Year.

ADVERTORIAL

1. Unprofessional email addresses.

An email address is often the first opportunity for a prospective client to get in touch. So what does your email address say about your business? Hotmail and Gmail addresses – or anything that sounds like it belongs to a private individual – can make your business sound less than professional. Choose an address related to your business: [email protected] for example. Any good web designer or hosting provider will be able to set this up for you.

2. Irrelevant or poor quality images

Images require careful thought. Crisp, high resolution photographs can really enhance a website. Conversely, blurry or poor quality images may drive potential customer away. Just as important is the choice of image. Do the images you’ve used make sense on the page?

Everything you need to get your business online for a fixed monthly amount. Friendly local web designer for hire.

Five Common Mistakes Small Businesses make with their WebsitesIn my job, I see a lot of small business websites; manufacturers, estate agents, consultants, builders – you name it. What continually surprises me is how many of these, even today, are not really fit for purpose. And it’s such a pity, because often you can sense that the owners have a real passion for their business. Yet their website is letting them down at every turn. Here are five of the most common mistakes I see small businesses make with their websites.

To answer this, imagine your website was written in a different language – can you still tell what the page is about? If not, chances are you could benefit from using more relevant images.

3. Assuming your customers understand your business

All too often, businesses forget that their customers are not experts. You might understand the technical specifications of your new super widget, but that doesn’t mean your customers will. In any case, they will be much more interested in how the widget can improve their lives. Keep your text simple, avoid jargon, and think about what your prospective customer really needs to know.

4. Poorly written copy

Many small business websites are filled with sentences that are tough to follow, and littered with basic spelling and grammatical errors. Some customers may assume that a lack of care with words will equate to a sloppy service. Taking time over your text will therefore pay dividends in the long run. If you’re not very confident, enlist the help of friends and family, or consider using a copywriting service.

5. Expecting the website to do all the work

Some businesses assume that once their website has been built, the work is done, and that customers will automatically beat a path to their door. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. A website is usually an ongoing project that needs to be continually developed and grown to retain its impact. Websites work best as part of an overall marketing strategy.

These five common pitfalls are easy to spot and just as easy to fix. Take a step back, deal with each of them, and you will be streets ahead of many of your competitors. Good luck!

New Jeep for Wiltshire PoliceSwindon-based dealership, T H White Fiat Group Brand Centre, has begun a forward-thinking partnership with Wiltshire Police. In a ‘first’ for the dealership, the award-winning dealership has supplied an All-New Jeep Renegade to Wiltshire Police in what is essentially an extended six month test drive.

At the end of the ‘test period’, the Force will have purchased the vehicle at a preferential rate from the dealership. The vehicle will be based at and used out of Gable Cross Police Station in Swindon and has been fitted with full police graphics complete with blue lights and sirens.

The recently launched All-New Jeep Renegade makes the perfect addition to the Force’s fleet, delivering superior on and off-road capability and in-car features which are second to none. It has best-in-class off-road capability and first-in-class automatic transmission along with innovative Jeep Active Drive systems. All of which make the All-New Jeep Renegade the perfect support vehicle in the fight against crime in the area.

Stephen Botham, Fleet & Services Manager at Wiltshire Police (Devizes HQ), negotiated the deal with Lee Jones, Fleet Sales Manager – EMEA Region at FCA Group and T H White Fiat Group Brand Centre’s newly appointed Fleet Sales Specialist, Emma McArdle.

Andrew Carr, Hub Superintendent Swindon from Gable Cross Police Station in Swindon, said “We’re delighted to add the All-New Jeep Renegade to our fleet of vehicles, which will be the first Jeep we’ve used as a marked vehicle and looking forward to the start of what we are confident will be a rewarding relationship between Wiltshire Police and T H White Fiat Group Brand Centre, with the support of Emma and Lee.”

Mum on the RunFiona Gibson.........................................Running is increasing in popularity these days, and Laura decides to get in on the act. A disastrous attempt in the Mum’s race at Sports Day spurs Laura on to change her life. She joins a ‘fat club’ and takes up running, determined not to be humiliated at Sports Day the next year. Oh yes, and there is the matter of Celeste: the young, alluring French teacher she sees flirting with her husband, Jed. So, the running sessions in the local park begin, spurred on by her new running partner. Who happens to be called Danny, but she doesn’t tell Jed that.

Full of humour and wit this novel is a great summer read. Mums all over the country will identify with Laura as she tries to survive life as the mum of three children, including a hormonal soon-to-be-teenager and a pre-schooler. Fears that her marriage is over lead Laura to make decisions that have unforeseen consequences: ones that she would probably rather not repeat! Laura is a character that the reader warms to straightaway and you find yourself rooting for her to succeed – in her running and in her love life. The storyline may be a tad predictable at times, but that does not spoil your enjoyment of this book. A perfect summer read.

Robot Girl Malorie Blackman...........................................How would you feel if your dad created a robot? More specifically, a robot who looked like you, with your memories? This is the situation that Claire finds herself in, when her inventor dad introduces her to AI-E. But all is not as it seems. Claire finds AI-E repulsive and surprisingly vulnerable with her squidgy soft skin. She wonders how her dad can do this to her. Sharing her concerns with her mum, she is reassured that everything will be okay if Claire can just learn to control her feelings.

But she can’t, and so she plans to destroy AI-E. Until she learns … well, that would spoil it, wouldn’t it?

This very short story (only 72 pages) from acclaimed children’s writer Malorie Blackman was originally published as a part of an anthology in 1997 and was published as a standalone book for the first time in 2015. Given its length this may be one for the library than purchase, but don’t let that put you off. Aimed at a younger audience than Blackman’s other novels (8+) this book is marketed specifically for struggling, reluctant, and dyslexic readers, but is sure to be enjoyed by everyone.

There was a woman who confessed to a priestthat she was guilty of vanity and of the sin ofpride. She shared with the priest that when

should looked into the mirror, she knew she wasbeautiful. The priest responded, “that’s no sin mydear, it was just an honest mistake.”

The question I’m grappling with is this:Should any sin be unforgivable? Auschwitz?9/11? The Burma death railway? Isis activitiesin Syria? The Moors murders? There are afew candidates I can name, but in the Bible, did you know that there is just one unfor-givable sin.

In Mark Ch 3 v 30, Jesus says, “Anyonewho blasphemes against the Holy Spiritcannot be forgiven”. It sounds a littlestrange, can blasphemy be worse thanmurder or genocide? I could think oflots of alternatives for an unforgiv-able sin. How about the person whoknocked the rectory wall down anddrove off without telling us?

There are many injustices outthere, but only one sin is described asbeing unforgivable in the Bible.

It’s important to get to grips withScripture, so that Scripture can get togrips with us. Did you hear about theChristian who was out camping andlost his Bible? 24 hours later a duck wasstanding outside his tent with the Biblein his beak. “Wow, that’s a miracle.” saidthe man.“Not really,” said the duck.“Yourname was written on the inside cover.”

We can’t duck this issue. What is thisunforgivable sin really about? After all,Jesus is all about forgiving the unforgivableand accepting those who were thought of asbeyond redemption. He even forgave thepeople who were driving nails into him. That has to be worse than blasphemy?

But the unforgivable sin is not just blas-phemy, it’s specifically, blasphemy against theHoly Spirit. That’s different.

The three references to it, in Matthew, Markand Luke, all appear in the immediate after-math of people being critical of Jesus and evenaccusing Jesus of being demon possessed. Theteachers of the law are speaking out lies againstJesus and as such are out-rightly rejecting hiswork of redemption in the world and consequently, all that the Holy Spirit was doing through Him.

They are so sceptical, unimpressed and evenbemused about Jesus, that they think he is down-right evil. They have a complete inability to see Godat work in and through Jesus.

The unforgivable sin is not just then aboutunbelief, it’s more than that. It’s about an unbeliefthat overtly denies Jesus and speaks lies about him.A heart that speaks lies about Jesus, as a conse-quence, never asks to be forgiven.

The unforgivable sin is not about God’srefusal to forgive us, but a person’s inability to

accept the forgiveness that God offers.God wants every person to be in His

presence for eternity, but we see throughJesus that God will not force people to bewith him. If you don’t want to be res-cued and forgiven, you don’t have to be.

The Bible tells us that “If we confessour sins, God is faithful and just toforgive us our sins and to cleanse usfrom all unrighteousness” (1 John 1v9). Any sinner can be forgiven, if werepent.

I guess our problem is we live in aworld of “Truth decay”. We think it’sOK to ignore God, but still carry ahope that heaven beckons when wedie. It’s logically ridiculous.

In Jesus, God has rescued us. Wehave a strong arm able to pull us out ofthe mire and the pit, but we must allowHim to lift us up. When we call out toHim, He will always come to help.

At the beginning of June this year, alamb was found on Bodmin moor in astate of distress. The lamb had fallen

through a four inch crevice separating twocolossal boulders on Rough Tor. There

was no way out. The lamb was far too deepto grab from the top and so the fire brigade

could only do one thing: dig soil from under-neath. What happened? It was a good news

story! The Lamb was rescued and returned toits mother.

Why do I mention this? The Bible says everyone of us is like a lamb that has got lost and is in

need of rescue. All we have to do is allow Jesus to doit. Anything else is unforgivable.
