modules are required in

order to complete the

pathway.

Welsh & Bilingual practice within modules

Please note that for each module, there are 2 module codes to identify whether the module is

bilingual (B suffix) or an English language module (no suffix); this is to enable students to

register on either a bilingual or English module (with module outcomes and content being

identical), and to enable the School to maintain accurate data of student choice and provision.

In line with the model of bilingual teaching set out in the Bangor University Language

Scheme (2008),

Core or large group lecturers are generally delivered in English, although some are

delivered in Welsh with translation being available

Seminar and tutorial support are available in Welsh

Learning resources are available in Welsh

Mentoring on clinical placements is available in Welsh

Assessment is available through the medium of Welsh

Students can also obtain support and guidance from the University’s centre for Welsh

language services (Canolfan Bedwyr), who offer support and development for both students

and staff of the University.

Professional & Academic Support

All students are allocated a personal tutor relevant to their field of practice; their personal

tutor will provide academic and pastoral guidance for the period on the programme and will

monitor progress in accordance with the University and NMC requirements and standards.

Personal tutors are supported by a Senior Tutor scheme within the University, and access to

further support, either for specific learning and/or disability needs or for personal issues may

be facilitated via the tutorial scheme.

Professional requirements and notional hours of learning

Please also note, that in line with the requirements for the Standards for Preregistration

Nursing Education (NMC, 2010), that nursing undergraduate programmes must amount to no

less than 4600 hours; this results in the modular hours exceeding what would normally be

expected of an undergraduate programme and needs to be taken into account as a professional

requirement for this programme. The following are ‘core’ common thread and field modules

offered both as bilingual or English language options.

11. Criteria for

Admission In accordance with NMC Standards and institutional requirements, all applicants must apply via the UCAS;

applicants with a minimum of 300 UCAS points or equivalent will be considered, as will applicants who have

Page 13: Programme SpecificationProgramme Specification Programme Details 1. Title of Programme i. Nyrsio Iechyd Meddwl/Mental Health Nursing 2. Name and level of award i. Baglor mewn Nyrsio

13

successfully completed an Access to HE or alternative equivalent qualifications.

The NMC’s requirements for literacy, numeracy and good health and good character’ will be applied and the School

has adopted the All Wales ‘Statement of Good Character’ reference. Good Character is further assessed by way

of an Enhanced CRB report. Good Health is assessed by the local Health Board’s Health at Work Unit.

Students with disabilities, on application, are supported by the University’s Disabilities Officer and the School’s

Disabilities Advisor, and relevant risk assessments undertaken and adaptations where required, explored.

Where there may be issues relating to Good Character, Good Health, or Disability that require further exploration or

investigation, the School and the local Health Board’s Fitness for Practice Committee would be consulted.

In addition to academic entry requirements, good health and good character, all applicants are interviewed by the

School; selection events and processes will normally involve nurse teachers, Health Board clinical staff,

students and service users; participants in the selection processes undergo training and support in diversity and

equality as part of their professional development.

All applicants will require evidence of availability of funding, and a set number of places on the programme are

funded directly by the NLIAH; there are criteria for the funding and information is available on the NLIAH

website. Where students are fully funded by NLIAH, there will be no course fees and there is currently a

bursary; partner EU state residents who meet the criteria for entry may have course fees paid for. It is possible

for UK, EU or International applicants to apply, as long as all other School and University entry criteria are met.

12. Student

employability

& career

opportunities.

Students successfully completing the BN programme are eligible to register their professional status with the NMC

and seek employment as a registered nurse. The employability rates are very high in comparison to other

graduates, given the professional competence and qualification in association with a degree. Many seek

employment locally with the local Health Board as registered nurses within the more formal NHS, or with

independent sector employers and charitable organisations who are responsible for the care and management of

individuals. Career opportunities once employed as a graduate and registered nurse are excellent an can lead to

opportunities in clinical practice/specialism, research or education; career pathways are often mirrored with

opportunities to undertake further study at Master’s and Doctoral Study level.
