We consider School Space to be the essential and definitive source for students and faculty for accessing current information, sharing knowledge , organizing thinking and work, and assessing progress. Our piloting of the Byrd Community Group has advanced efforts towards effective collaboration, equal access, and consistent student engagement with School Space and its elements. We are looking forward to utilizing even more features this year. See examples of usage below:

We planned, developed, promoted and collaborated with various teachers, parents, students and community to present our 2nd annual Barnes and Noble Book Fair Event! Performances and appearances by Cheerleaders, athletes, dramatic readers, strings students and jazz band students helped set the stage for an exciting night in our community. We were also treated to an art walk of various work created by our art students. Overall, we were able to raise well over $900 in credit for books to be purchased for our library. See HERE for details.

We planned developed and facilitated Teen Read Week Activities to encourage lifelong reading and promote multiple literacies.

We revise, planned, developed and initiated our Game Zone. (See HERE for details.) This initiative not only provides an opportunity for our students to develop multiple literacies, it also promotes library usage and it aligns with our School Improvement Plan to foster positive interaction with other students and teachers, and promote getting students more involved in our school “zone” by leading through their participation in one area minimally beyond their assigned classes.

As an extension of Teen Read Week: Books with BEAT! our library hosted many high interest literacy events. We developed a scavenger hunt for selected books with beat that were hidden throughout the library. We promoted them heavily with videos on our AM Show. We checked out all 100 “Books with Beat” to Janis so that when a student came to the check out, it would indicated that “special code ” and they would be a winner of a fab air guitar. Click on this link to see more info. http://blogs.henrico.k12.va.us/byrdlibrary/special-events-and-programs/teen-read-week-2010-books-wbeat/ The other events will be described in the November report.

As our first selection in our Books2Movies club, we chose Legends of the Guardians taken from the first 3 books in the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series by Kathryn Lasky. We began with a showing of the movie trailer and continued with connections to the books. Our main feature was a visitor from Maymont; a real live owl! It was really exciting to see how the students came alive with the opportunity to see interact with a real owl like the characters in the movie and books. Check out a recap of this event here…
