WALK IN THE PARK

TOUR OF TOURNAMENT CAPITAL CENTRE (TCC)

TOUR OF RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL (SECWEPEMC MUSEUM)

Part of the walking group on McArthur Island on Tuesday, April 17. Everyone was intently observing a great horned owl in a tree, and then it emerged to fly back to the tree in which one of its young was being harassed by crows.—Midge King

On Tuesday, April 10th, a Group of seven Kamloops Probus Club members met Shawn Smith at the TCC en-trance way. In an atmosphere of noisy cement hammering tools, Shawn gave an introductory talk of the history of the TCC and its upgrades over the years. He then showed us the Olympic length pool (8 lanes X 50m), and the new Health-fare restaurant that serves healthy real ingredient food. The next room was the multipurpose gym with its training facilities for soccer, basketball, track and field, even pickle ball. Up to the second floor where we saw half the hall-of-fame cabinets opposite the large gymnastics Centre. Then around the gym he showed us the state-of-art fitness training apparatus. Around the track itself are a number of fitness machines. There was a health area that is used for seniors with heart and lung issues, monitored by nurses, looked to be a wonderful addition. He showed us the excellent Olympic training facilities where world athletes come to train. The world-class Tournament Capital Centre is the showpiece of Kamloops. Thanks to Donna Cassidy and Marilyn Poncelet for setting this up.

On Tuesday, May 1st, we will tour the residential school area here on the powwow grounds. For the tour to proceed there must be at least 10 of us and I’m sure there will be many members interested in going.Price is $7.35 for seniors, $9.45 for just adults. We will meet at the museum for 10:30 am. Lunch will be arranged to follow. A sign up sheet will available at the joint April 26 meeting at Brock Center. By that time I will have arranged the lunch spot. The Secwepemc Museum displays incorporate the oral history and legends of the Secwepemc people, along with historical photographs, illustrations and artifacts. -Thanks, Donnasee http://www.secwepemcmuseum.com/plan-your-visit/things-to-do/secwepemc-museum

MEN’S COOKING GROUP 2018

The Men’s Cookers met at Ray Zacharias’ home where he instructed us in the preparation of a very tasty chicken dish and rice with all the trimmings.

Dessert was very interesting. It was meant to be a delicate cake infused with a gourmet fruit sauce. Unfortunately, someone didn’t quite follow the recipe and the cake came out of the oven in the shape of a large dumpling of impressive density bobbing about in the juice it had failed to absorb. It was surprisingly tasty

------------------------Add On after publication ---------------------------------Hi John, Just read Ed’s newsletter re your description of the pudding we made. Deidre advised me that no one made a mistake. It tuned out exactly as it should be not absorbing the sauce fully, but leaving it to spoon over when served. So if you wish to make it, follow the recipe and enjoy. The men’s cooking group do not make mistakes so our impeccable reputation remains intact. -Ray Z.!

Jim arranged for glorious weather for our first hike of the season on April 19th! There was not a cloud in the sky for the whole time of the hike to Deep Lake above Westsyde. A total of 14 hikers participated, four from our club: Jim, Midge, Katy and Colin, three from the Thompson Rivers Club: Sue, Sandy and Linda - and four from the Grasslands Club: Marilyn and Ted, Marie and Donna along with three guests (future members of one of our clubs?): Wendy, Mary and Horace. The lower parts of the trail were dotted with yellow fritillary (or yellowbell) and masses of buttercups, but the balsam root which is normally spectacular along this trail had been delayed from flowering by our late spring! However, the ticks were out in force! Deep Lake was peaceful and reflective with a few ducks resting on the surface and we tarried awhile to enjoy a refreshment and to watch Sandy, who had brought

his fishing rod with him, wading out into the water in hopes of a big catch! Following the hike nine of us repaired to the Dunes Golf Course Clubhouse where we enjoyed lunch on the sunny patio. A great start to the season Jim!-Colin James
